BLACK SABBATH Bassist GEEZER BUTLER Has '50 Ideas' For Next GZR Album - Sep. 1, 2006
BLACK SABBATH bassist Geezer Butler has posted the following message on his official web site:

"It's been a year since I updated my 'journal'; maybe I should call it an annual. Well the greatest tournament on Earth has finished, and I can now get back to normal life. I watched every match of the World Cup, and now I don't know what to do with myself. My congratulations to Italy, the world champs, and to Germany for organizing such an amazing event, and indeed to all the teams, for making life worth living. Football is the one true religion, hallelujah.

"Well, since I last did my journal, so much has changed, and so much has stayed the same. The Ozzfest 2005 was enjoyable; it was great meeting everyone at the GZR signings — such marvelous people, so many budding bass players, and truly kind souls. Then just when I thought it was safe to go in the water, SABBATH were inducted into the British Music Hall of Fame, and then the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, so it was a weird semi-busy 12 months. I thought METALLICA did a great job inducting us into the Hall and playing the SABB songs, as did Brian May at the British Hall of Fame.

"So far this year I have written about 50 ideas for the next GZR album, which is now in progress: I have criss crossed the USA in search of inspiration for my book, which keeps changing with every rewrite: and I have photographed a couple of ghosts, as well as some very interesting places. Photography (very amateur) has become my third favourite hobby, and I hope to post some photos [yawn] on this site, starting with some of my bass/guitar collection [excuse the quality]. I have also visited some excellent vegan eating establishments, and enjoyed some excellent vegan wines and beers, but I am not sure if it's appropriate to mention them [alcohol concerns, blatant advertising], but if anyone needs to know, write in.

"Good news! Since I started this update, the English football season has started and Aston Villa have acquired the greatest manager on the planet and so far have not lost a match!"

Geezer Butler's last solo album, "Ohmwork", sold less than 900 copies during its first week of release back in May 2005, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Geezer's first project under the GZR banner was 1995's "Plastic Planet". 1997's "Black Science", which was credited to GEEZER, featured vocalist Clark Brown, who also performed on "Ohmwork".

I downloaded some samples from Ohmwork. I liked the music, but the vocals put me off. Many Blabbermouth members will disagree with me, but I think there are too many Metal Bands with "gruff" sounding vocalists who scream & shout rather than sing. It turns me right off the music.

GZR rules, Sabbath rules. Geezer Butler > Cliff Burton.

Put those ideas toward a new Sabbath album. It would happen if it wasn't for $haron.

Clark Brown isnt really a growler.. He does a lot more clean vocals than anything else and he does them admirably. Ohmwork was pretty weak compared to plastic planet and black science, hopefully fifty ideas will be enough to make a solid album again

he isn't bad. I grew to like him on Black Science. The first 2 albums are like night and day in a lot of ways, but each still damn good, the kind you can put on and listen to the whole way through and enjoy almost the whole thing.

I always thought Plastic Planet was the closest you'll ever get to a real Sabbath-sounding album in modern times (aside from the vocal style, which is still cool, it's the album that finally made me wake up and start appreciating thrashy vocals.)

But yeah, I have to agree with most here, Ohnwork felt a little weak compared to the first two.
