ALICE IN CHAINS: Even With A New Singer, It's The Same Old Song - Sep. 2, 2006
Mitchell Peters of Billboard has issued the following report:

While ticket sales seem promising, this fall's upcoming ALICE IN CHAINS tour is one of several recent outings to beg the question of whether a band can remain relevant without its original singer.

Four years after the drug-overdose death of Layne Staley, virtual-unknown singer William DuVall joined the core lineup of Jerry Cantrell (guitar/vocals), Mike Inez (bass) and Sean Kinney (drums) for a successful club trek of six U.S. cities in May and then ventured to Europe for a series of festival dates. The band's last outing with Staley was in 1996.

The latest North American trek begins September 22 at the Joint in Las Vegas and wraps November 26 at the Warfield in San Francisco, with more dates to be added. General on-sales began August 19, and so far the numbers look good. Minneapolis' First Avenue date (November 13) sold out immediately, and dates at Norfolk, Va.'s NorVa (October 22) and Baltimore's Rams Head Live! (October 24) were well on their way, according to venue representatives. Those shows will have a capacity of 1,500 and an average ticket price of $40.

"It's one of the strongest onsales we've had in the history of the NorVa," president Bill Reid says.

actually, it was Jerry's voice as much if not more than Layne's, that was the trademark of AIC.

Once again, you do make a good point: Jerry did play a vital role on back-up vocals, to a point.

I don't know how anybody could seriously say that Jerry's voice was the trademark of AIC's sound. His voice played a big part in many of the songs, but to call his voice the "trademark" doesn't make any sense. He's the backing vocalist. Aside from a couple songs on their self-titled album and the first half of "Don't Follow" and "Brother," it's either Layne singing or Jerry AND Layne singing. And Layne's voice was incredible and people connected to it, while Jerry's voice is a little honky and rather uninteresting for the most part. When people think AIC, they think Layne Staley.

And I just pray that this current form of AIC doesn't use the name "Alice in Chains" when they put out new material. But something tells me they will. I can't help but feel this is all about money. Jerry knows that an album with the name "Jerry Cantrell" on the front won't sell nearly as many albums as the name "Alice in Chains" would. He played with Inez and Kinney on his first solo album and called the band "Jerry Cantrell." Why all of a sudden does he feel the need to call it "Alice in Chains?" I find it very hard to believe that this is some kind of "tribute" to Layne Staley. They could easily do that without tarnishing the name "Alice in Chains."

You cant compair AIC to AC/DC.

When Brian took over, they changed thier sound from the Hard-Blues-Swing style of the bon era to more of an all out Hard-Rock sound. they also had new matirial that was amazing.

With AIC, they dont have new material, and the new singer just goes out there and does a Layne impersination.

Could you imagine in 1980 after bon died if AC/DC hired some singer from an AC/DC cover band that sounded just like Bon, for the sole purpose of being able to go out on a tour?

THEY NEED NEW MATERIAL!!!!!!!!!!!

At this point it just seems like an AIC cover band.

Yes, William Duvall is a great singer, but he need to put his Own "Stamp" on the band. At the moment he is just riding Layne's Coat-tails.

William DuVal is a terrific singer, had the pleasure of seeing them earlier this year. He's certainly not just doing a Layne impression and brings his own style to the songs.

to say AiC should close shop without Layne is a reasonable statement but, if I was in a band with that much talent and we lose a lead singer/icon due to circumstances beyond our control there is no fuckin way Im packin up my bags. Layne was a great frontman who had a very distinct singing style but Jerry Cantrell had a rather large part in their success. And Layne was singing to music that JERRY wrote. Jerry and the rest of AiC had just as much of a part in the bands success as Layne did if not more. The music was just as dark as the lyrics. Regular fans who are not educated in the technical side of music see Layne as the genius behind AiC because he was the singer. Its just the way it goes. Any musician who grew up listening to this genre back in the early/mid 90's knows how amazing and original the music the rest of the band put together was. Good for them if they want to tour.... Ill be at the Orlando gig.

Yeah Layne was a huge part of the band, but Jerry was the major creative force. I saw Duvall sing Alice songs in Atlanta when Jerry was touring for Degradation Trip, I saw him sing for the whole band in Boston this may and I'll be seeing him again in October. He pulls it off and I'd rather listen to 3/4 of a great band than the crap out today will all original members.

Personally I have been an AIC fan for as long as I can remember and I feel that it is pretty annoying that Jerry is trying to start the band up again. I feel for that just for the fact that Layne was without argument, the voice of AIC, whether he wrote the songs or not, and he shouldn't be replaced.

Seriously this is the same thing that happened to black sabbath. Both bands were great together, but both had an irreplaceable singers. Ozzy and Layne, both singers had the hands on most haunting voices in rock history, and both AIC and Black Sabbath lost their singers through drug problems in some form.

But despite the singers of both those bands, I feel that the other three members of both bands still deserve to be in the business because they were incredible in what they did as well. But as Black Sabbath brought Dio into their band, I felt that they stopped being the band I loved and were no longer really Black Sabbath. I just feel that they should have renamed the band since it wasn't really Sabbath anymore.

And I feel the same exact way for AIC bringing in the singer William DuVall, they should just start a new band since Layne is no longer in the band. I'm not saying that the new AIC is going to be bad, but since it's not really the AIC we all know and love, it shouldn't be called AIC.

I'll also be pissed off if DuVall tries to imitate Layne's voice, he should be original in his own ways, not Layne's.

R.I.P. Layne Staley
