AEROSMITH Guitarist: 'We Want To Give Fans As Much Value For The Dollar As We Can' - Sep. 2, 2006
Brooke Williams of Columbus Alive recently conducted an interview with AEROSMITH guitarist Joe Perry about the group's upcoming co-headlining tour with MÖTLEY CRÜE. An excerpt from the chat follows:

Columbus Alive: Can we expect anything new from AEROSMITH on this tour?

Perry: "At this point, every tour is like a challenge for us, to mount it up. I never know what to expect, with the way the music business has changed. Each has its own set of problems.

"We're playing with a band [MÖTLEY CRÜE] that I still think of as a baby band, but they got a generation of fans turned onto rock 'n' roll through their music, they're a formidable show.

"You know, we're going in with all the guns loaded. The friendly competition between the two bands means the audience gets a better show. That's why we like to do these packages with other headliners, like we did with LENNY [KRAVITZ] or KISS. It gives the audience a really good night.

"It costs a lot of money to put up a show like this. Tickets are expensive! We want to give fans as much value for the dollar as we can.

"This tour, we're going to go out there and top what we did last time. We'll change the set around. We'll go out there and give the fans the skeleton set of the songs we know they'd be disappointed if we didn't play, but we'll also going to bring in some of the old songs."

Columbus Alive: How do you keep your finger on the pulse of what fans want?

Perry: "We just listen to what everybody has to say. We're fans first. We know what we like, but we're entertainers. We've seen so many bands that will go out there and go, 'We're not going to play that because it's really not our sound.' And I say, 'Yeah, but it was your biggest hit. Your fans want to hear it.'

"We come from a totally different school. We're out there because fans want to see us, and for no other reason. We listen to feedback from every resource we can. Now with the Internet, there's a pretty good cross-section of fans out there.

"We did a poll last year of most requested songs. We were a little surprised by where some of the songs ended up on the most-wanted list."

'We Want To Give Fans As Much Value For The Dollar As We Can'

IF THAT IS THE CASE JOE PERRY, YOU BETTER DEVELOPE A TIME MACHINE TO GET YOU BACK TO 1976: BECAUSE 'ROCKS' WAS YOUR ZENITH, AND THE SUBSEQUENT TOUR THAT FOLLOWED...AFTER THAT IT WENT DOWN HILL.

First off, I am not a "newbie", in fact, i am far from it...

you have obviously never heard his solo stuff in the past 10 years.

I was a big buckethead fan before the whole GnR debocal. He refused Axl for like a year and a half before he gave in. the he got sick of his shit and walked out on him.

buckethead is an amazing guitar player, and I would love to see ANY guitar player challenge him in ANY style. The guy's talent is impossible to deny. unless you are just casting him off based on his work with Axl.
I sujest you download one of his Solo concerts from a bootleg DVD site, and give him a chance before you slam him.
I mean, If Axl Rose, Ozzy Osbourne, and Les Claypool all want him in ther bands, then he must be doing something right...

He 'ain't' no newbie; however, 'Rocks' will go down as one of the best hard rock albums of all time. REGARDLESS...Slayer could wish for such talent.

Yes, but at least when Slayer came out, it was a more original sound.

Aside from the Voacls, Aerosmith sounds like everyother borderline "glam" rock band of the late 70's.

Dont get me wrong, i have respect for them, I just dont peticularly like thier music.

Steven Tyler admits (and i'm paraphrasing) "We are just a bunch of jerk offs milking it for all it's worth." Don't believe me dust off your copy and watch for yourself.
