Report: SEPULTURA Will Not Continue Using Name After Current Tour - Sep. 4, 2006
In a brand new interview with the Brazilian newspaper O Estado de São Paulo, former SEPULTURA drummer Igor "Iggor" Cavalera is quoted as saying that he and the current SEPULTURA members have come to an agreement that the name SEPULTURA can only be used until the end of band's current "Dante XXI" touring cycle. However, in the same article, the group's bassist, Paulo Xisto Pinto Jr., denies that any such agreement was ever made.

Speaking to BLABBERMOUTH.NET back on June 13, 2006, Igor was asked if, in his opinion, SEPULTURA should go on without either of the Cavalera brothers in the lineup. "I don't have the right to say whether it should exist, or if it should go on, since I left the band," he said. "I think if it was like, if they threw me out of the band, or if it was like a fight, or if it was a different situation, I could have a different opinion, as far as continuing or not continuing. But as far as the way I see it [now], I think it's really up to them if they want to continue or if they wanna stop with SEPULTURA." Asked if he would try to stop the remaining SEPULTURA members if they tried to continue and record a new album under the SEPULTURA name with a different drummer, Igor said, "No, not at all."

SEPULTURA played their first official show in their home country with the group's new drummer, Jean Dolabella (ex-UDORA), on August 5 at the Circo Voador in Rio de Janeiro.

Igor announced earlier in the year that he was taking a break from the group's touring activities to spend time with his second wife and their new son (who was born in January). Filling in on drums during the band's European tour with IN FLAMES was Roy Mayorga, who played with Igor's brother Max in SOULFLY for several years in the late '90s and again in 2001-2003.

Igor is the second Cavalera to leave SEPULTURA. In 1996, Max Cavalera exited the group after the rest of the band fired Max's wife Gloria as SEPULTURA's manager.

Music is what matters. And Sepultura only released quality albums, with or without Max.
I'm curious to see what new name Andreas, Paulo, Derrick and Jean will choose. Or if Andreas and Paulo will reunite with Max and Igor.

Sure it's just a name, but this is fucking SEPULTURA here. Sepultura's basically been Andreas Kisser's band for the past decade anyway, so why should this change anything? God damn it, that's not cool.

The "legacy" ended with the release of Roots. They should have stopped using the name on that album.

Very much unlike Guns n Roses who shouldn't be allowed to use that name as well.

There should be this rule that unless 50% of the original line-up are still in the band then the name can't be used. I'm sure there are some examples out there of bands who only have 1 or 2 members from the original members but still use the name so I await follow-ups.

Now Max and Igor and put a real Sepultura reunion together and not have to deal with the bullshit.

You have to give props to Andreas, Paulo and Derrick as well as Iggor. All those guys have a lot of class.

Other bands should behave accordingly..

i've always thought that they should have changed their name after max left. how the metal community would have viewed them then would have been a whole lot different. think about it, if the against album was really the debut from an unknown band, do you think it (and everything after) would have been as ruthlessly bashed as it did? all of their post-max era albums were all of very good quality and relatively original at a time when there was a whole lot of complete garbage (nu metal) getting completely over as far as record sales goes. they could have easily continued releasing roots-sounding albums, or even done what fear factory did (on digimortal) and try to cash in by ripping off the bands that they actually influenced originally. sepultura didn't do either. they tried to (gasp!) forge their own path, and made the music that they wanted to...not what the ozz fest crowds wanted them to do. at the same time, all the post-max albums were pretty far away from what made older sepultura so succesful. for that, it's understandable why there was such a backlash. if plant and page decided to reform led zeppelin only to change its sound to amazingly competent technical death metal a la nile or cynic, i imagine a rather large amount of ppl would be pretty pissed off...no matter how well done it was. i realize that that's a pretty extreme example. at any rate, i think this is a very good decision...it's just too bad they waited so long to do it.

I would support that Black Dude of the current lineup if he's keeping a metal band. He's really not bad on the mic and I want to follow these guys.

As for the old Sepultura, if they ever re-group and make records, I want to support them too, and Soulfly too. All of them.

I like all these bands.

Please let the music live on!

Yes , the name should be retired, but ,at least it's not an ego trip pulling the strings.

If all you putzes think Paulo and Andreas putting their LIVES into a band means diddly squat, then maybe these bands would never have gone on to or continued their greatness because supposedly key members left:

Pink Floyd
Napalm Death
Genesis
Black Flag (hrm, not too sure about this one...)
Opeth
Saxon

Stop using the name?? C'mon!!! Look, I know there's a sentiment that no Cavaleras, no Sepultura...but something I have to remind you guys, the Cavaleras QUIT!!! They LEFT SEPULTURA!!!. It's like a CO of a company resigns and that company has to change its name just cause he left. Don't get me wrong, I hate new Sepultura. But one has to be realist. They can't just come and change the name just cause Igor decided to leave. That's very selfish and arrogant. They decided to stay and continue SEPULTURA. It's not like THEY left. Think about it.
