IRON MAIDEN Gets Political On New Album - Sep. 5, 2006
United Press International reports that heavy metal icons IRON MAIDEN have taken a topical direction on their new album, "A Matter of Life and Death".

Many of the songs on the British sextet's first new album in three years — including "These Colors Don't Run", "The Longest Day" and "For the Greater Good of God" — deal with current events, particularly military actions in Iraq and Afghanistan. "Obviously there's a lot of very topical subject matter on this album," notes guitarist Dave Murray, adding that the group knows that can be a risk.

"I know that subjects like war and religion aren't to everyone's tastes," he says. "But this is more about the psychological aspects, not just doom and gloom. We're just telling little stories about what's going on, not ramming it down people's throats."

IRON MAIDEN kicks off a world tour to promote "A Matter of Life and Death" on Oct. 4 in Hartford, Conn.

The new Audioslave is unequivocally better than the new Maiden. Mostly because Audioslave doesn't just cobble together parts and tempo changes and call them "songs."

They've been writing songs against war since the Powerslave album. "Two Minutes to Midnight" anyone? Other antiwar songs are "Afraid to Shoot Strangers", "Blood on the World's Hands", "The Aftermath", "Heart of Darkness", "Paschendale", "Como Estais Amigos" and countless other ones. This is nothing new for Maiden, they hate war and that's great.

AMOLAD is simply KILLER.

BUT not enough guitar solos and bruce's voice sounds quite strained at times, mostly wailing which gets annoying.

Listening to my copy as we speak.
Pre-ordered the CD + bonus DVD + T-shirt.

FYI, the T-shirts are fairly small by North American standards. So if you're in Canada/U.S. and you ordered the "large" like I did, it fits more like a "Medium" for sure.

Entire album is 1 hrs. 12 mins 4 seconds

"Back In The Village" is also a war song I think. For some reason, this song makes me thing of Vietnam.

Anyways, not all of Maiden's "war" songs are "ANTI"-war. More like the glorification of war. "2 Minutes To Midnight", "Paschendale" and "Aces High" definitely glorify the experiences of war.

First off, the album is called X Factor, not Projext X. Any REAL Maiden fan would know that.

Secondly, you rate albums you don't even own! WTF?

Thirdly, you don't even have Live After Death on your list, which happens to be the quintessential live album of all time.

In conclusion, your rankings/ratings are null and void. Go rate some other bands albums that you don't own. You probably won't like the new Maiden album, so don't bother posting what you think about it on this thread.

Harris said that he and Smith wrote the album in one day - ONE FUCKING DAY - lazy rich wankers - and that is exactly how it sounds - one days work worth of music. Sad coz they were the greatest now it seems they do albums coz they have a contract to fulfill. Oh well - Bruce has got his planes and Harris has his daughters band to promote etc

What I mean is, they put you in the experience of war. And go into great detail about it, glorifying the details.

But then, I am not an obsessive Maiden fan.

I know very little about the show. It was a hit in the U.K. in the late '60s, before I was even born.

It's never been broadcast in Canada to my knowledge (except for a special showing; but it's never been in reruns like The Simpsons or The Cosby Show).

funny how Powerslave or the old records didn't take more than one listen- they just kicked you in the ass the first time and recognizing their quality was easy to do the first time.

it takes a while to warm up to it or you need to listen to it over and over again / it grows on you = a crappy album.

I don't know why it would take so many listens to wrap your head around or warm up to a new album when it's the same formula and even more watered down that they've been doing forever and it gets more simplified and obvious the more albums they make- nothing worth studying.

Iron Maiden have become a paradoy of what they once were.

They sound formulaic and tired now.

All those who love this new Maiden crap- I don't get it- how can you love this shit? Just go pop in Powerslave or Somewhere in Time or even the Number of the Beast and then go back and pop in that Brave New World or A Matter of Life and Death Garbage- my gawd- no comparrison. It doesn't even sound like the same band with the same fire.

I think most of the people who go to Iron Maiden shows today are teenagers who have no idea how great Maiden used to be. Go look at the Live After Death tour book- now that's how a Maiden show used to be.

It's kind of like all those posers who wear Motorhead shirts and can't name a Motorhead album or don't know anything about them.

Maiden has become something you buy at Hot Topic- they've become mallcore.

What happened to Maiden?

I'm a longtime maiden fan but boy these guys are really on auto pilot these days.

They've clearly figured out a formula-

1) name a song after some historic figure: a pilgrim, clansmen, mercinary, trooper, assassin, journeyman,- what's next a song called the Caveman, the Yeti man?

2) add some galloping bass line- dum du du dum du du dum du du dum

3) some 123 123 12 123 123 12 snare riff beat from Nicko

4) Record it crappy-low budget all digital

5) use a crappy computer generated graphic for the cover instead of real art.

voila- Iron Maiden album.

Bruce sounds damn tired on this album too.

7th Son of a 7th Son was the last high budget/good sounding Maiden album. Even though I like No Prayer, have you noticed that ever since No Prayer for the Dying they sound like they recorded their albums for like $5000 bucks in like a day with no budget on a crappy mobile pro-tools rig in a bus? Instead of like the old days on a real analog console with 2 inch tape? Their recording budget must be smaller than ever - their profit margins higher than ever too. They're already rich why don't they just retire instead of making more crappy albums- either that or make a good album.

I never thought I'd say this but I'm never buying another Maiden album- these guys are just as sold out as Sharon Osbourne is.
They've both figured ways to milk their careers.
I think these guys are going the way of Metallica- the longer they play music, the worse they seem to be. They seem to be getting to be worse musicians the longer they play. Their musicianship hasn't grown in like 15 years. They sound horribly stale and out of ideas and have since No Prayer for the Dying- I guess that's what happens when you play with the same few guys your whole friggin life.

Somewhere in Time and Powerslave- what great friggin albums

7th Son of a 7th Son= Last good Iron Maiden Album

Ultimate Sin= Last good Ozzy album (Jake E. Lee was the best)
most of No Rest For the Wicked and No More Tears is pretty cheesy

Them= Last good King Diamond album

Gawd why does every band suck so bad these days????

It's a really great album, very dark, very inspired, the songs are excellent and there's a even a cool bass solo by Steve Harris (Blood on the World's Hands, the intro), I love it.
Dance of Death is also great.
Virtual XI is probably the worst Maiden album together with Fear of the Dark, but there still are some good tunes. I love Maiden and I certainly don't throw away any of their stuff. I listen to all of their albums from time to time, with pleasure.

"I don't know why it would take so many listens to wrap your head around or warm up to a new album when it's the same formula and even more watered down that they've been doing forever and it gets more simplified and obvious the more albums they make- nothing worth studying."

The recent albums have been quite complex and progressive. Yes they do reuse the same formula here and there, but that’s party of maidens unique sound.

"Iron Maiden have become a paradoy of what they once were"

Nope they havent.

"All those who love this new Maiden crap- I don't get it- how can you love this shit?"

because they’ve evolved yet also stuck to maidens unique sound. if they really did the same stuff over and over then they would have faded out by now

"Just go pop in Powerslave or Somewhere in Time or even the Number of the Beast and then go back and pop in that Brave New World or A Matter of Life and Death Garbage- my gawd- no comparrison. It doesn't even sound like the same band with the same fire"

Powerslave, Somewhere in Time and Number of the beast are all fantastic albums. Why compare BNW, DOD and AMOLAD when they are different. Same basic maiden sound yeh, but as I said, it's evolved.

"I think most of the people who go to Iron Maiden shows today are teenagers who have no idea how great Maiden used to be"

Maiden concerts attract people of all ages. Why? 2 reasons, their music has evolved through the times (i apologise for repeating myself but i'm trying to make a point). Which is attracting new fans and keeping most of the old ones happy.. 2. they still put on a hell of a show

"It's kind of like all those posers who wear Motorhead shirts and can't name a Motorhead album or don't know anything about them"

um no.

"What happened to Maiden?"

they evolved

"I'm a longtime maiden fan but boy these guys are really on auto pilot these days"

its a shame you think that.

"Bruce sounds damn tired on this album too"

IMO bruce sounds stronger than ever. Check out footage from last years early days tour. He can still get those notes.

“Instead of like the old days on a real analog console with 2 inch tape?”

They still use analogue tape.

"I never thought I'd say this but I'm never buying another Maiden album"

Fair enough.

"these guys are just as sold out as Sharon Osbourne is. They've both figured ways to milk their careers"

I completely disagree. As Steve put it, Sharon has an ego the size of California. Maiden care about their music and their fans.

"I think these guys are going the way of Metallica- the longer they play music, the worse they seem to be."

Again I couldnt disagree more.

"Somewhere in Time and Powerslave- what great friggin albums"

I agree

"Gawd why does every band suck so bad these days????"

yeh they all do, apart from Maiden.

The biggest knock against the last 2 albums is listener fatigue... a bit too much of the same direction from beginning to end. Take the individual songs out of the context of the album and they're all great, but play 'em all in a row and it kind of doesn't hold my attention. The best albums, in my opinion, have more of a variety from song to song. Again, it isn't that the new songs are bad, just that there's too many in the same style all in a row.
Not every song needs to be 20 minutes long. :) OK, exaggerating a bit, but you get my point.

Someone mentioned that Maiden are all about their fans. In a brutal way it's true. In a bold move they pretty much wrote off their American base. An American tour that lasts less than one month to support their new release! It seems ungrateful, yet believe it or not they have a larger fanbase elsewhere. It's a gutsy move. But being that I will probably never get to see them live again, why buy the new album? Fuck 'em. I've heard enough epic songs from one band.
