LAYNE STALEY Book To Be Made Into A Movie? - Sep. 28, 2006
According to a press release from ARTS Publications, Argentinean journalist/author Adriana Rubio has been contacted by writer/director Eric Moyer from Philadelphia about turning her biography of late ALICE IN CHAINS frontman Layne Staley, titled "Layne Staley: Get Born Again", into a movie.

Layne Staley died in April 2002. He was once on top of the music world as the lead singer for ALICE IN CHAINS and MAD SEASON. "Layne Staley: Get Born Again" is filled with exclusive interviews with his mother, Nancy, his sister, Liz, and Layne himself, as he broke his five-year public silence just months before his death. The book also includes pictures from Layne's childhood, drawings, poetry and a lot more.

Eric Moyer is said to be in the process of writing the first draft of the script. Moyer "fully understands the subject and will work in cooperation with Rubio" in separating and highlighting Layne Staley's human side from that of a rock star, according to the press release.

Commented Moyer: "I am determined to make this film about Layne Staley, not only to celebrate his life and talent, but to warn others through his compelling story that heroin will kill you...no matter who you are.

"Adriana Rubio's book 'Get Born Again' reached out to me in many ways. I was initially drawn to the material as an ALICE IN CHAINS and MAD SEASON fan, but thanks to Adriana, I left the book understanding Layne as person that we can all relate to. Our lives are surrounded by addiction, in one form or another, but unfortunately, most choose not to see it. Hopefully, this book will open their eyes."
According to Rolling Stone magazine, Rubio began the book with the Staley family's blessings, but the singer's mom later said it "lacked concern for basic human dignity" and withdrew support.

Rubio was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. She is a member of "The Latin American Journalists Federation" (FELAP) and also of "The Union Press Workers of Buenos Aires" (UTPBA). She is an investigative journalist who has published three books in the United States: "Dave Mustaine: Are you Ready to Take the Risk?" (Vantage Press), "Layne Staley: Angry Chair" (Xanadu Enterprises) and "Jim Morrison Ceremony" (ARTS Publications).

If it does happen, Layne should be played by Robert Downey Jr. How funny would that be?

It would be cool if there was a movie made about Layne's life, but this book wasn't very well written. The woman made the book almost as much about her as it was about Layne. And Layne's mother wasn't pleased with this book either after she read it. I'm all for a Layne movie, but I'd be a little cautious about this woman's involvement.

ok I'm guessing with the new rules that were recently installed...I can't really say anything negative about a dead human being...but all I'm gonna say is grunge was terrible form of music in the 90's..I really hate listening to the radio nowadays...either they play grunge music or just plain terrible awful music know as emorock...if I hear pearl jam's "jeremy" or I died last tuesday....bleed for me "due to my enternal love for you..I will die for you in a instant"...one more time gonna throw up...metal is still dead!!! the radio still stuck on grunge/alternative...I would actually kill to hear some "metalcore" on the radio...lamb of god or shadws fall or killswitch engage would be interesting to hear...but that'll probably take another 10 years...long after the genre has died..and no I'm not talking about the internet radio or xm but the actual radio!!!

THANK YOU ALICE IN CHAINS FOR KILLING METAL MUSIC...

I'm actually sorta glad layne died...I don't know if that's against the new rules...but just stating a fact...

This isn't JUST a metal site. As much as I love the bone-crushing, visceral stuff myself, a man cannot live on metal alone. It does say Metal AND Hard Rock on the main page.

Anyway, as much as I love Alice In Chains and as much as Layne (and Jerry) inspired me as a singer, I'm not going to be rushing out to see a botched attempt at a movie of his life. Let the guy rest in peace, or alternatively, take it in a whole other direction and cast Gary Coleman in the title role.

C'mon, VivaLaSlash, you know that ain't gonna happen. AIC makes money, look at all the Greatest Hits albums there are, what about Nirvana? There's a movie (or two) about Cobain, I always thought it was a matter of time before something about Layne was made (as it will probably happen when Ozzy passes away... movie rights and Greatest Hits galore).

I guess wishing for such a movie to be done in good taste would probably be asking a bit much too. But isn't Ozzy ALREADY signing away his dignity with cheesy TV appearances and Boxed Sets galore?

I still maintain that Gary Coleman is a criminally underrated actor. His head is level with most women's chests, so he never has to here the old "My eyes are up HERE" line.

Im tired of hearing all this bullshit about grunge killed metal. Grunge saved metal and rock n roll from the cornball hair metal stuff. Alot of grunge bands were basically metal bands (AIC, Soundgarden, Tad), but they chose to take a more serious approach to their music than the douche bags that had big hair, tried to play faster than everyone else, and overdid falsetto singing.

Would you people honestly have been stuck with cheesy ass glam and power metal bands that were trying to copy Van Halen and Iron Maiden for 10 more years until metal was completely dead?

After grunge got big, metal started to take itself more seriously. Good metal bands like Megadeth, Sepultura and Slayer got more recognition, and other badass metal bands like Pantera, Ministry, and White Zombie put their own twist on metal and made the genre much more dangerous and evolved than it ever was.

in my opinion, the 90s was the best period for metal. Music hasnt been as good since then. Alice In Chains kicked ass. Nirvana kicked ass. So did Pantera and NIN. That was the best, most creative period for heavy rock, so dont gimme that bullshit about grunge killed metal in the 90s. You losers can keep your corny jack off 80s metal band.

AIC started out metal with songs like We Die Young and Them Bones and still even after that were very metal inspired and have always "more than the other so called grunge bands" played guitar solos complete with whammy bar thrown in. Plus for a "Grunge" band they were invited and played at the Clash of the titans shows alongside Slayer,Megadeth,Anthrax and Testament. They were very Sabbath inspired dirge filled heavy rock with a metal edge. Basically METAL!

I think the general consensus is that the bands that emerged for the north west in the early 90s were some of the most talented rock bands of the last twenty or even thirty years. I think you'll find you're in the minority, bill, with your bizarre claims and the reactions here prove it.

I found your comment about Layne's death out of order, no need for that kind of talk - it isn't a fact at all to say what you did. At least get that right.

I own the book in question. She couldn't write her initials.

I'd love a Layne movie, especially a cautionary story...but nothing based on what this troll wrote.

Can I say troll on here now? If not, Adrianna Rubio is just a very bad writer.

Make a movie with a great director and with the consent/participation of the band and most importantly his family.

And everyone sleep well/have a nice day...now that we're a wholesome friendly family environment here at Blabbermouth.

WHO....could possible play the role of Layne Staley??
The person would need to have a LOT of charisma!!!

Not only was Staley a really good looking guy; he had this "SOMETHING" about him that a lot of ppl liked.
Everyone always stated what a great, super nice guy he was. Even Cantrell said," if ya knew Layne; ya liked him....everyone liked Layne."

Maybe the "Rubio" way to go....might not be the best route; but it is TIME to give Layne credit for who he REALLY was and how much he HELPED ppl. He should be honored FINALLY. If everyone only did some research on the guy; you'd know about all of this. He should also be properly credited for not only his SINGING but his STYLE, WRITING, ART -- AND even how much he has been COPIED.... alot of musicians even agree about this.

This movie could turn out EXCELLENT -- only the writing/directing has to be done right!!! -- AND -- the casting of his role has got to be "Right On" -- to pull it off!!!!

So....who could possbily be the right person to fit that role? Right now, no one comes to mind....(and please.....not Robert Downey Jr. - as stated above.....he isn't good looking enough + too old.....)

Maybe....but the "Get Born Again".....version......IS much better.
What if "Rubio" really DOES have the tapes of Layne & his conversation with her?????

Then what will ppl think? 2nd book is proofread/ has more details/ Most Rubio personal stuff removed/ Rubio explains why Layne's Mom withdrew her support....

I hate to say this but it made sense.....OF COURSE.....some bad stuff has to come out......NOTHING....&.....NO ONE'S LIFE......is 100% pretty.....

Come on......even if your Mommy is your best friend; how much "juicy" material does she REALLY know about you???? Nancy had her own life to live too. Layne was living his own life. There's some pretty personal shit added to justify Layne & Nancy's relationship....

Again....what if "Rubio" could prove she REALLY spoke with Layne? Nancy isn't to blame......All I'm saying is that we ALL can carry some pretty deep issues with us.....and if ya never resolve them.....they can really depress the shit out of ya. Layne appeared to be "happy" actually on the surface.......he used alcohol first then drugs to help with his emotions. How many of us ALSO do the same thing.....with sex......FOOD.....WHATEVER!!!

A) AIC WAS LABELED GRUNGE BY THE RECORD COMPANY TO RIDE THE WAVE. THEY WERE HARD ROCK.

B) EVRY SITUATION IS DIFFERENT BUT COMPARING AC/DC'S AND A.I.C' IS WRONG. THE YOUNG BROTHERS ARE/WERE THE DRIVING FORCE OF THE BAND AND BON SCOTT(REST HIS SOUL) WAS HARDLY A UNIQUE VOICE UNLIKE LAYNE WHO THERE LEADER.

AND OFF TOPIC BUT.... ITS NICE TO SEE THE POST OF COMMENTS RULES UP TO GET RID OF SOME OF THIS TRASH

I like AIC and loved Layne's voice...but to say Bon Scott did not have a unique voice and wasn't a driving force is just brainless. Bon Scott was one of the best frontmen EVER and had the most unique voice in hard rock/metal along with Geddy Lee. Listen to all the Bon Scott albums...then listen to Brian Johnson's...not even close...Bon's are much better. Back In Black is their most recognized album...but Highway To Hell broke the band. And let's face it Soundgarden and AIC are both great Hard Rock/Metal bands....Nirvana was the Beatles on Heroin.

The Born Again version is much better. Rubio's accent does not come across. Publisher left out many personal chapters of the author.

The Hate To Feel chapter has MANY QUOTED NEW statements made by Layne regarding his family and especially his Mother!! I pesonally find it difficult to retype & repeat what was said out of respect for his Mother JUST IN CASE it's bullshit........

But; I gotta tell ya; what was said had better be true because if it's not; Rubio would/should have "shit" to pay to Layne's Mom. It's pretty bad....and it better be the truth to write such things.

Bon was one of my top 5 fave front men of all time..I just get a little defensive because I miss old AC/DC as much as Zeppelin. I missed AIC and never got a chance to see Layne...but at least I'll see the original band with a singer who is supposed to have the chops to do the old songs. I was lucky enough to see Soundgarden, STP, and Nirvana before they crashed and burned. Three of the top bands of the 90's in my opinion along with Pearl Jam. I know Layne is almost impossible to replace, but think of all the fans who will get to see Cantrell and the other original members who made the great MUSIC. I still think the reason Zeppelin never reuntited was Page's drug and alcohol problems...not the "Bonham was irreplaceable" crap Plant was spewing....

first off this is coming from a musician that listens to everything in the rock metal Genre, if you just listen to "metalcore" your obviously missing out there is so much great music out there these days. I mean whats better just listieing to Killswitch who kick tons of ass, or listening to Killswitch and 20 other killswitch wanna be's dont be afraid of new things and sounds you cant say theres only one peice of art out there that pleases your eyes, Music is art just as much as paintings if not so more than paintings and drawings. yeah curiosity killed the cat but Groundhog day isnt a good holiday either. Alice in Chains is undoubtedly one the greatest bands of all time. just like we look at the who and led zepplin, black sabbath as man those bands were timeless, so will are kids look at Alice in Chains. Im of sick seeing all this uneducated Ignorant shit people say who have no need to poke their nose where it doesn't belong. If you don't like AiC back the fuck away there music isn't meant for you anyways. I wouldn't be Half the Guitar player and Singer/Songwriter I am today if it wasnt for this band making feel a home when I was without one as young as 15. This band means a great deal to me and you cant Imagine how pist I get when I read stuff like "THANK YOU ALICE IN CHAINS FOR KILLING METAL MUSIC..." "Born a Junkie, Lived a Junkie Lifestyle, Died A Junkie."
For one you cant sugar coat that by saying you love the guy... but. FUCK THAT why dont you do some research about the guy before you all fire that shit canon you call a mouth. and to you Mister AIC killed Metal, everything you sayed was fucking RETARDED. Alice in Chains was the closest thing to Metal in the main stream back then, I mean unless you want to count Metallica's Black album the least metal record they ever did at the time, i mean you had Pantera which whom were huge at the time but wasnt mainstream. and last but not least Metal is never dead, and the day when Metal is straight mainstream is when it is truly dead because its genuine passion and meaning would be some how be lost. Plus in the past year and a half Metal has come back with a vengence bands like Lamb of God(which I love), Killswitch Engage(love them Two), and even MASTODON(really love them) are huge as hell and have been deemed the saviors of metal the Radio isnt shit anymore, the underground and substream have more than half the control of music and who hears it according to "mainstream" po and hip hop are the only things thriving right now just because there the most packaged able but are music is doing way better than major record companys even know because rock and metal artist dont even want want what they have to offer. fucking robert and dean deleo of STP chose and indie label for the army of anyone cd from fear of being prepackaged and fucked up the as and there people that youd think would have contol since there living legends........you probably dont even know what im talking about so . point is WHERE THE FUCK HAVE YOU BEEN, PICK UP A FUCKING REVOLVER MAGAZINE INSTEAD OF A COCKSMOKER WEEKLY ONCE IN A WHILE! ITS ONLY IN EVERY FUCKING GROCERY STORE ACROSS AMERICA EVERY MONTH!!!
anyways as for the movie idea, if there going to do it , it better be done for the right reason and done right , or not done at all. and atleast some of the money they make should go towards the layne staley fund and for Laynes dad's vasectomy(so he can never have another kid EVER! hopfully hes to old anyways,no other soul deserves the shit parenting tactics of that PieCE OF SHIT.) anyways sorry to rant but that shit pisses me off, AIC helped me through a lot . Personally, I'm a little more Bon, but as easy as it is to draw parallels between the two, they were still completly different. Either way their both gone and I agree with the folks above that a movie about Layne's life won't do anything but screw stuff up and make things look ridiculous.
