IRON MAIDEN Performs Entire New Album At Tour Opener - Oct. 5, 2006
IRON MAIDEN performed its new album, "A Matter of Life and Death", in its entirety during the opening concert of the band's North American tour, which kicked off Wednesday night (October 4) in Hartford, Connecticut. The band's setlist was as follows:

01. Different World
02. These Colours Don't Run
03. Brighter Than a Thousand Suns
04. Pilgrim
05. Longest Day
06. Out of the Shadows
07. Reincarnation of Benjamin Breeg
08. For the Greater Good of God
09. Lord of Light
10. Legacy
11. Fear of the Dark
12. Iron Maiden
---------------------
13. 2 Minutes to Midnight
14. The Evil that Men Do
15. Hallowed Be Thy Name

As previously reported, Sanctuary Records will release IRON MAIDEN's "Different World" as a single in the U.S. on November 14, featuring Radio 1 Zane Lowe's "Legends" session of "Hallowed Be Thy Name" and "The Trooper" as B sides. These tracks have previously been used as B sides to "The Reincarnation of Benjamin Breeg", which was released in Europe in August and although it was not eligible for the U.K. chart it reached No 1 in Spain, Sweden, Finland and Hungary. There's a "stunning" promotional video full of animated action packed adventure to accompany the single, directed by Howard Greenhalgh. A preview image can be viewed at this location.

"A Matter of Life and Death" has sold 98,000 copies in the United States since its Sept. 5 release, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

they have made a number of great albums and then they play one of there worst albums (in my opinion). And it's not something original anymore, not that Slayer was very original when they did that. Now I guess every band is goin to play an album completely. At least pick one of your better albums to play complete, like Reign in Blood or Master of Puppets.
So next time, play Beast of Piece of Mind or Killers.

that really sucks. I just bought the new album last weekend. After all the fuss I thought it would be really something, but indeed it is a poor and boring album. the song structures are the combination of X-factor, futureal and brave new world (the latter due to the fact that adrian is back, which makes some songs do-able). In other words, way too long, build up to nothing.
I can tell you for sure that this setlist is a bad move that fans will not like. However knowing Maiden, the setlist will not change. They've never done that

I would have felt ripped off. Pretty short set list to begin with, but an entire new album? For me personally (and I own and like the new CD), I go to a concert to hear maybe a couple of the best new tracks and the rest the hits that I loved over the years. And hopefully a band will throw in some old favorite deep cuts. But a whole new record? I honestly think Maiden is trying to drive away their US fan base -- they do not need the market obviously, they skipped out on the last part of Ozzfest last year, and now they are only playing northern based cities with very few classic songs -- and not even the best fo the greatest hits (good songs though). I love Maiden, but I am getting a little tired of the games they play with the fans here in the states.

I saw Tool a few weeks ago and they played nothing from Opiate or Undertow, which was disappointing -- meaning no Sober, no Prison Sex, no Opiate, etc.. And they played a bunch of stuff from the new record. But it had been out long enough for it to sink in. And they played a ton of greatest hits, but like Maiden, maybe did a little much from the new record (again which I like a lot).

I'm glad they don't come to my country this year. My God, "A Matter of Life and Death" is one of the most boring albums Maiden has ever done: the songs are way too long and way too slow. Listening to "A Matter of Life and Death" is as exciting as watching paint dry. Nine-minute epics all starting and ending with a rehashed bass intro/outro... Christ, that's thrilling!!!!!

Apparently, the band will make one more final studio album and will then call it a day. I can live with that. It's safe to say that Bruce's and Adrian's return didn't lead to a creative boost in the Maiden camp. None of the three studio albums Maiden did since they came back, lives up to the first five classics. Releasing more mediocre garbage like "Dance of Death" and "A Matter of Life and Death" will tarnish their reputation even further.

Maiden went downhill after "Powerslave".

Well I have tickets for the Chicago show!! I am shure that the show will be amazing, but as a fan I am a little dissapointed.

It may se something new to the USA to do this live, at the Astoria Dio recorded the Holy Diver album live and other acts did their most famous albums in their entirty but that was a special thing for that venue from what I understand. Well Deep Purple did do a MachineHead tour not to long ago.

BUT ANYWAY.....Why the hell would Maiden do that???? ANd with the "New" album????
They are just trying prolong their longevity by doing this.

Since the next big tour will be Powerslave, 7th son, Somewhare in time they probly don't want to "ruin" the "capital" that tour will generate.

Man at least play some frickin B-Sides or something!!! there is an album of untaped material right there!!!

I had a a bad dream one night that they only played 4 songs and the left!!! This might have been the pre-cog for this setlist!!!!

I may be part psychic. Damn it! now I hate myself!!!!

It's not as if they haven't done and will do their fair share of hits tours - Maiden of all bands should not be attacked on that front. Both Dickinson and Harrris have gone on record saying how they are wary of turning into a nostalgia act so the writing was on the wall that this would happen.

I would say though that the US may not be the best place for this set - they didn't get the whole Seventh Son thing back in the day and greatest hits tours seem to be the protocol for bands touring there once they get to a certain age.

I was there, and by the end of The Longest Day, I was bored out of my mind. Its not that the songs are bad, but the fact that over half of them are 7+ minutes long (With most closer to 8-9) and midtempo at best. Furthermore, as much as they'd love to be, and I say this while still maintaining that they are one of my favorite bands, Iron Maiden is NOT A PROG BAND. There simply isn't enough in the way of change and dynamics to keep those songs interesting for that long, and simple repetition grates eventually. Pain of Salvation they are not.

Hopefully they realized that this the best idea once they saw that the crowd became a hundred times more lively once Fear of the Dark started up.

I agree that they were never as consistent after Powerslave, but 7th Son (the best WRITTEN album, IMHO, if not the best SOUNDING) and Dance of Death were bright spots. Also don't forget we got some really good songs from most of the albums (Be Quick..., Wickerman, Clansman, FotD, etc).

But I really agree with this statement:

"It's safe to say that Bruce's and Adrian's return didn't lead to a creative boost in the Maiden camp. "

"whatyoudon'tknowis" and "thin lizzy" - SPOT ON!

I'm laughing so hard while reading the comments of some of the US-american "fans" here.

Look, morons, what Maiden did since Bruce's and Adrian's return in 1999 was A COMPROMISE when they decided to do "hits"-tours between album tours. "Ed Huntour", "Give Me 'Ed Till I'm Dead Tour", "Eddie Rips Up The World Tour" and the forthcoming "Golden Years Tour" are exactly made for simple-minded folks like you!

Don't want to hear new songs? Don't go to the respective album tours! Wanna relive your youth when you still were able to get two erections within 5 hours? Go to the Maiden nostalgia tours! It's that simple really.

Got it? No? I'm not surprised.

As for this setlist: Considering that AMOLAD is Maiden's best release since SSOASS I'm really looking forward to the Stuttgart show in December. There is a possibility that they'll slightly alter the setlist (after all they dropped Long Distance Runner in 1986, Stranger in 1999 and Fallen Angel in 2000 from the setlist) but this show will be interesting to say the least!

Almost 30 years into their career and Iron Maiden still take chances. The only thing I'd prefer would be the choice of one or two different "classics". They didn't play The Prisoner since 1988 and I'm a little tired of Fear Of The Dark right now. The relatively short set doesn't surprise me since the set in 2003 was comparably succinct, too.

Anyway, I'm as curious about this tour as I am about "The Golden Years" trek in 2008.

Maiden is always saying how pissed they are that the American audience only wants to hear the 'classics' and no one is into their newer stuff... so what better way to change this than to force everyone who came to sit down and listen to the entire new album live? Right, but I don't think this will be the actual effect.

First, let me say that I absolutely love the new album, and still think it will be an awesome show. However, it is not a smart move by maiden.
1. They are going to really piss off all the older fans that have consistantly been supporting them over the years and paying money to come to each live show, they will not be interested in coming to the next tour... have fun playing the riviera in chicago maiden.
2. Although alot of the new songs kick ass, I just don't see them having the live fire of some of their older songs that gave me chills the first time I saw maiden live... it was one of the best live experiences I'd ever had.
3. They have to realize new people are seeing maiden every time they play, who have been listening to them for a long time... I'm sure theres alot of songs from their massive catalogue they would like to hear.
4. Even the people who love the new album are going to be bored by the fact so many other fans won't be into the show.

Bruce always complains about American audiences too...this is not a way to win them over, if he even cares about that. I guess they'll always find a way to rip America off whether its through having a short amount of time to play (ozzfest), short tour (DoD tour with 4 shows in NYC and I think 2 in LA), or a setlist with only 5 classics. I guess I should be glad they even want to come here anymore, so Bruce would have me believe.

When I go see a band play live, I generally don't want to see the same-old-same-old. When I saw Kiss on the '96 tour it was so dissapointing. While the stage and lights and band were great, all I got was The Best Of Kiss Alive I & II. And played note-for-note like those albums. I already OWN those albums, so I was pretty let down.

Now, I can see why a Maiden fan who's not big on the new album would be pissed after dropped X amount of $ on tix only to find they're gonna have to sit through 10 songs they didn't like much. That would be annoying. But then sell your tickets, sell your copy of the new CD and trade it in for something else. Wait for the next tour, which as stated above will probably be a Golden Years tour for the next DVD release.

Personally this is a setlist I'm dying to hear. I find the new album to be among the best Maiden stuff since for almost 20 years, and others do too. I know when FOTD came out, it was weird to see that only SIX of the new songs ever got played live. The other six, nobody ever got to see them live and never will. At least this time out, every song will get a live outing.

When I saw Queensryche in '95, they played all the tracks from Promised Land (not in sequence though) and it was great. The band and audience were obviously into the new tunes, and there was a sense that you were seeing something special that you'd never get to see again.

Look at the positive!

the usa population will surpass 300,000,000 this month.

what year are you in? 1983?

98,000 tickets? where did you get that figure?

HERE'S A REAL FIGURE FOR YOU...

In 2004, Iron Maiden were the #6 grossing musical
act on the planet. At a tiny fraction of mass media
exposure compared to the other top 94, which only
contained household words like "britney spears"
"metallica" "rolling stones" "neil Young" etc

Even you can figure out the math. Maiden have a
fierce, loyal and powerful global legion.

They also pulled this feat off with very weak sales
in USA compared to the rest of the world..
USA, who'd of thought? mass consumption country
hardly helps maiden at all...

so as a citizen of USA..
you are dubious of having any authority on the psychi of maiden's rabid fan base.

I am paying $500 to go to Irvine.
I hate supporting scalpers, but I
fear even worse that this may be
my last chance to see them play
USA.

I booked a flight, hotel, car rental,
and days off work for this, and I
can't think of better money spent
all year.

Maiden doesn't need USA, I'm relieved
they are bothering at all, especially
after sharonfest.

I hate it when bands are too predicatable.

I was getting so tired of the same songs.

A lot of bands would do well to retire their
tired out hits live.

Look no further than all time legends like
Neil Young, David Bowie and Bob Dylan
for musical acts going for over four decades
that still put on a fresh show.

A lot of bands could do well to be more like
this.

All maiden haters, thanks for weeding yourselves
out.

Really people, do you NEED to hear 'NOTB' or 'RTOH' or 'Trooper' AGAIN, just listen to one of the 10 live records they are on. The band has stated over and over how proud they are of this album, and this is a great way to show it. I'll miss these shows, have to travel for work when they hit the NYC area, so very bummed, but I have even more respect for Maiden now. But, Maybe I won't.
I think the new CD is very good. But, To charge people $50 or more per ticket and then not play the songs that people are familiar with and want to hear is ludicrous. I saw them on the Brave New World tour and they played almost the whole BNW CD and people started getting pissed because they wanted to hear songs like Wasted Years, Can I Play With Madness, Flight of Icarus, etc, etc..

I'm sure many people walked out of that show in Hartford pretty pissed.

They have balls to do it, but I'm afraid it will be a disaster here in the US. It might work better in Europe (although even there I imagine that some of the classic songs will be missed). On recent concerts that I've been to, the BNW tunes have been poorly received. I like the new album, and I respect the fact that Maiden doesn't want to be a Kiss type over the hill novelty act. But ultimately, if you're asking your fans to pay $60, $80, $100 for tickets, it's worth giving a little more consideration to what they want. Like others have said, playing 5 songs of the new album would have been plenty.

90% of you people are incredible losers. I'm a proud American fan and a proud Maiden fan and I was singing along to every song, because I took the time to learn all the lyrics and the music and be prepared for anything they wanted to play. You half-assed malcontents that call yourself Maiden fans have no business attending any new Maiden shows, just pop in your little Live After Death DVD's, pop in a quarter into Steve Harris's mouth and let your narrow-minded jukebox of a head play along.

Any self-respecting Maiden fan would admire these guys for having the balls to go out there and pull this off. You don't think they know USA Maiden fans want to hear the classics? These guys went into the trenches, took grenades and had/will have figurative guns pointed at their heads for playing the whole record in front of these crowds, and yet they will plow through it like no one's business. USA Maiden fans are the most unappreciative bastards to come down the pike in a really long while. European fans will go ape shit I guarantee for this, because unlike Mr. Hot Dog & Nachos, they appreciate the fact Maiden are still around and have the capacity to play.

Like I said, you might as well stick in your favorite DVD's and watch them over and over, there's no point in you going to shows if all you are gonna do is whine and moan that they didn't play Wasted Years.

Just because I'm into Maiden and learn all their stuff doesn't make some 'droneboy' or whatever it is.

Maiden isn't 'your' band, so either have something constructive to say, or just keep shut, because at the end of the day, there's nothing you can do about it anyway.

I also didn't realize it was 'egocentric' to play material off the new record.

You can think whatever you like of me, that's fine, it's your own anger getting in the way, not mine.

I enjoyed the show, and there's not 1 thing you can say to debate that point.

"It's not. It is, however, egocentric to play the whole damn album (an album that 70% of the people in the audience probably aren't familiar with) and not deliver classics that the majority of the audience will be expecting to hear. THAT'S egocentric, and very much so."

It's called touring for the record. They might have played a few more songs than you like, but that's how the 70% of the unfamiliar audience becomes familiar. Classics don't become that way by themselves, the band makes it a classic. Is 'Invaders' a classic song in a fan's eye? I doubt it, it's certainly aged now, but what average Joe is going to be able to tell apart that song from The Legacy? Classics become that way because they are molded into your head tour after tour.

I'm not angry at 'untrue' Maiden fans, I'm confused by them. Everyone wants it to be 1986 again, and it's simply not the case.

I learn lyrics and study the music because it's something I care ebout a lot. I presume you studied your major in college, yes? Why? Because you cared enough to. You study and delve deep into whatever profession you are engaged in, yes? Why? Because you care enough to. Where's the difference if I choose to study Maiden lyrics & music? I care about it, so I shall study it, and I'm NOT a loser or 'blind fanboy yes sir Mr. Harris' for doing so. Your argument does not follow logic.

It shows that they are genuinely proud of this album. You didn't see them do that with DoD or Brave New World did you? They aren't promoting Piece of Mind or Number of the Beast. I will probably record Fear of the dark if possible, I love that song and they didnt play it at ozzfest, and It will be damn worth it to be able to watch afterwards.

I paid $96 to some ticket broker for a ticket in the GA section. I am a little upset with the setlist, but, then again, they aren't obligated to do anything. At least GA is cheaper than seats at face value.

If you do NOT like what Maiden do or represent nowadays, you are NOT a fan (anymore). Simple as that. Iron Maiden are recording artists and as artists they are expressing themselves. Of course it's "egocentric", it's what being an artist is about. It's not a "service" and Iron Maiden owe "egocentric" (ex-) fans nothing. Period.

Is that so hard to understand? This cultural rift between Europe and the US, even in the metal scene, is really puzzling. Reading this thread, Steve Harris would be embarrassed and it would certainly affirm the course his band is heading for.

Conclusio: If you don't like it, don't go and wait for the "Golden Years Tour". Maybe you're a "true fan" in 2008 again.

Bottom line is, Maiden have paid their dues and they have decided to do what they want to do for themselves. It is their life, their band, etc. I love people on here trying to tell Maiden what to do because it suits their needs.

I am sure the band is aware they could do better as a nostalgia act, but they choose not to do so. I remember a qoute from a famous rock star who decided to abandon his old material. One more thing, it's not 'America's fault' that Iron Maiden isn't appreciated the way Iron maiden wants to be appreciated in the states. Perhaps if they did a full tour with more old songs it would help. There are plenty of things that could be done to fix that.

DOING OZZFEST WITH THE SETLIST THEY DID DID NOT HELP AT ALL.

They shouldn't have even done Ozzfest, they should have done their own tour. Well, they know that now.

I love the nationalistic bullshit in this thread. Clearly, American fans are horrible for wanting the band to mix up their fucking set list.

A Matter of Life and Death is a great album. It is, however, fucking boring to hear a bunch of midtempo epics with little variation for an hour. At least play something different. Shit, I could have done with a few songs off Brave New World and Dance of Death, those aren't 'the classics' by any stretch of the imagination. How about playing other neglected things, like the Clairvoyant?

Sorry, I'm not sitting here and kissing their ass for this simp;ly because their Maiden, and I've loved the band since I was listening to my brothers tapes twenty years ago. And if all you can say about this is that I'm typically American, then you have nothing to say, because nationalistic diatribe is almost as pointless as religious
aggrandizement.

1. What does a concert ticket buy? I think it buys entrance into a concert, not a certain song list.

2. The new album was #9 on the US chart, therefore, I think they figured a lot of concert-goers dig it.

3. I remember reading some advice website to artists that said, "Play the damn hits. Those songs got you there. Treasure those songs for giving you the chance to do what you love."

4. An artist with more than 3 decent albums faces a challenge: new vs old. If you don't introduce many new songs into the set, then you become and stay old.

5. Remember that every favorite song of yours was *initially* some new song that many people complained about.

1. unfortunately ... maiden are aging. they aren't losing a
step, in fact they are more fierce than ever. but still,
they aren't going to tour like they used to. they have
said this for years, and get used to it... this may be one
of their last, if not last, times they come to USA

2. somebody else said it best. americans thinks they can
get what ever they want when ever they want it.
they're wrong.

3. america is a weak market for maiden. they are world
wide juggernauts otherwise. feel lucky they are even
bothering with us. I feel sorry for the real loyal fans
around the globe that don't have the luxury.

4. a lot of you, and you know who you are, just live to hate

Well I was one of the people complaining that Maiden wasnt playing the South. Now I'm kind of glad. I dont mind hearing songs off the new album. I really like Brave New World and so when they played six songs off that album, it was cool. They were all good songs. This CD isnt that great. I wouldnt mind hearing 5 or 6 songs off it, sure. I know they need to promote the new material. But 10 songs? And to leave out many classics, like Thr Trooper, Aced High, NOTB, Powerslave, Wratchchild, etc/ Now I dont feel like I am mising out on anything.

But Maiden is still my favorite band.

I am embarassed by some of you Americans "fans". Bitch, bitch, bitch. If the set list was all the old songs you would complain that Maiden doesn't change at all. I'm from New England and will see Maiden tomorrow night in Boston and I can't wait. It is sad to say that European fans are WAY ahead of us ( No offense Europe). All American fans seem to want are nostalgia acts. They have there place, don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan, but give me a break. Maiden is without a doubt one of the best bands in the WORLD. They play to sold out shows everywhere but the US. They are on the radio and TV everywhere but the US. We, U.S. fans, are in the minority when it comes to Iron Maiden. I can't blame them if they cater to the Europen fan base. Maiden gets far more respect from them than the U.S.. Nevermind that, llok at our music scene. What is usually on top of the charts? Rap, country - anything but hard rock/metal. In Europe, hard rock/metal rules. One half of the comments posted here seem to have come from people who have only seen Maiden once and IF they bought the new album, only listened to it once or twice. That is too bad. Iron Maiden is once again a force to be wreckoned with and most of its U.S. fan base and other rock fans don't know it.

And you're all fat, lazy, unemployed, out of touch with reality asshole Americans, so no wonder Iron Maiden doesn't like you! Up the irons!"

Unfortunately, this is your largely unfounded perception of what would come out of die-hard Maiden fans mouths.

You are also shoving many words into 'our' mouths. I am being level-headed as well, just on a different level. But this all comes down to a very simple concept:

--Iron Maiden makes album
--Iron Maiden tours for album
--Iron Maiden plays songs off new album
--Iron Maiden must leave off older material for new album material
--Iron Maiden takes chance by playing entire album
--Nostalgia nuts will demand to hear Powerslave in it's entirety, disregarding that the World Slavery tour was 21 years ago
--Shows that are near to sold out will not be affected by the odd many who proclaim they will not not attend due to the setlist choice
--Iron Maiden embarks on their Golden Years tour to satisfy the nostalgia nuts who will then complain about Iron Maiden playing the same old stuff all the time
--Iron Maiden still wins in the end

I don't know, I appreciate the States though, it's a country of many super bands, not to mention hendrix-doors.......in states it seems you have to either cut your hair (metallica), either to wave a states' flag (sharon osbourne) to be really succesful......it's the states-system I guess, but yet in Europe (and especially in uk-france) things are not soooooooooo much better, except maybe Scandinavia.....yes. there, tings are REALLY better!

There's just no pleasing you people, is there? For the past few years, tons of people on this site have been complaining that Maiden had become too much of a nostalgia band. Now, the band does something entirely different, and you people still complain. It takes guts to go out there and play an enitre NEW album of material, and is quite frankly, a very metal thing to do.

My best guess is that you complainers are merely causual Maiden fans. If you had the chance to meet Steve, you would probably tell him that you used to own Piece of Mind once! It's either that, or Maiden fans officially don't know what they want. I feel bad for the guys because their fans tell them one thing, and then they listen, and they get shafted for that.

If you don't like it when bands grow; evolve and take chances, I recoommend that you become a fan of the shit MTV plays nowadays. Maiden is obviously above your train of thought.

I was there, in the pit, against the rail with a bunch of other American fans who were singing along with the new songs and knew them like they were the classics. Obviously this set isn't going to please come casual fans who want to hear the same old favorites, but that's a leap I'm sure Maiden knew they were taking. Anything away from a normal hits set is going to alienate some people, but fuck it. I was happy as hell they had the guts to do something other than a casual listener set and give the real fans something they deserved. Not like they didn't play any classics anyways. I mean fuck.. they don't need to play Run To The Hills and The Trooper every damn tour. They have other hit songs too and gave some of those a nod. You'd think people would appreciate the chance to see a great band live rather than nitpicking that they didn't select the exact songs they wanted played. If some of you guys really have such a boner for uninventive hits set lists than don't worry... I'm sure Ozzy & Sharon will get together another Black Sabbath tour at some point.

GOOD GOD?????????????????

pathetic..

it's 2006, that was 20 years ago.

don't go calling your self a "true fan"

you're full of shit.

Bob Dylan, David Bowie, Neil Young, Paul McCartney,
Tool, UFO... there are lots of bands doing respectful
music in their late aging gracefully in their late 30s to
early 60s....

this is a good thing, maiden are a class act

I have been a musician for 20 years (i know bfd)
but my point is... it's a sad fact that americans
can't let go of the past and embrace new music.

It's a sad phenomenon that starts about age 25.

how it affects me and pisses me off as a musician,
is that it's hard to get a gig playing my original
stuff so i have to play 80s music.

it's fucked up. I've been to Holland, Germany,
Sweden, Denmark and England to know well
enough that cover bands don't exist like they
do hear.

cover bands, nostalgia, oldies stations..

it's mainly a lame american tradition

this new maiden album is my favorite EVER.

so just don't go... they've outgrown you.

Maiden are just testing the water by playing the whole album live, its more likely they will drop a couple of songs as the tour goes on.
As for the amounts of dates in different countries, it has been well documented the band will tour less but release a live DVD after every tour. I know for a fact they are recording at Earls court London, which will be a great show. Oh and dont forget the powerslave tour soon.

one good example is the 80s : maiden had 6 straight million albums that time and they never reached top 10.......why ? what about FAKE charts ? but as I commented earlier in States someone has to cut his hair, litterally or not, to receive grammys and other shit that make people but records

It's silly to bitch about the setlist of a show just because they didn't pick the songs You wanted This Time. Can't please everyone and I'm positive some people DO want to hear the new album. Some people here just seriously need to take a step back and realize the world doesn't revolve around what they want and that Maiden will be doing another hits set list in the future and has done them many times in the past. Just shoot them for trying something else why don't you.

Good post man, you make some very strong points here:

"Look, morons, what Maiden did since Bruce's and Adrian's return in 1999 was A COMPROMISE when they decided to do "hits"-tours between album tours.

Got it?"
