METALLICA's HETFIELD: I Have A Feeling That CLIFF BURTON Likes What We're Doing - Oct. 5, 2006
METALLICA frontman James Hetfield spoke to the Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter about the "memorial day" that was held Sept. 30, 2006 for late METALLICA bassist Cliff Burton at the at Gyllene Rasten restaurant/bar in Ljungby, Dörarp, Sweden. (Check out pictures at this location.) It was on September 27, 1986 — 20 years ago — that Burton died in a tragic bus accident in Sweden, just over the road from where Gyllene Rasten is located.

On performing "Orion" live this past summer:

Hetfield: "That was the highlight of the set for me. It sums up Cliff and I cried every time I played it, but it was good tears. I was overwhelmed with gratitude for the fact that I had the opportunity to play in the same band as Cliff and learn things from him."

On the importance of Cliff, the musical genius:

Hetfield: "We never would have written guitar harmonies or instrumentals or songs with very intricate melodies and orchestrations without Cliff. We wouldn't be where we are today."

When the memorial stone is described to James Hetfield, he is stunned and very happy.

Hetfield: "Wow. That really shows the kind of commitment and love our fans have for our music and the people behind it. Cliff is one of the icons that won't be forgotten. Apparently some fans who are very dedicated have taken the time and put in the effort to create something as timeless as a memorial stone to remind people about Cliff. It's really amazing."

METALLICA is currently working on its next album with producer Rick Rubin. On a wall in METALLICA headquarters there's a poster for the concert in Copenhagen which the band were on their way to when Cliff Burton was killed. James Hetfield says that Cliff is still present when they write songs.

Hetfield: "We talk about what Cliff would think and what he would have added. And now, especially with our new bassist Rob [Trujillo] playing so powerful and with his fingers just like Cliff, I have a feeling that he likes what we're doing."

No one in METALLICA has been back in Dörarp since the bus crash, but James Hetfield points out that they probably should visit the site.

Hetfield: "I think it would do us good. But my relationship with death is different. I grew up with Christian Science where you don't believe in funerals. In a way it's very unhealthy not to get closure, time to mourn. But the idea behind it is to let the person live on within you. I know that Cliff lives on within us."

Will you go to Dörarp to look at the memorial stone?

Hetfield: "Absolutely. There's no question all of us would enjoy it. Not so much to grieve but to see how loved Cliff is."

I've been saying it for years, Metallica ended when Cliff Burton died. The frameworks and most of the writing for Justice were done before Cliff died, so that's why that one is so good. After that, the band was clueless at how to write the music they'd been making. Hence, Black and the steady progression of simple, dumbed down time signatures, etc. The proof comes from the horse's mouth that Cliff Burton made Metallica special, without him, they've been very average. St. Anger was a failed attempt to regain that form.

Hetfield: "We never would have written guitar harmonies or instrumentals or songs with very intricate melodies and orchestrations without Cliff. We wouldn't be where we are today."

That's a very touching interview.

Although there are some albums and songs they shouldn't have done in the past 15 years or so, one should not forget what this band has done for the fans and scene. They still are the most influential and important heavy metal band of all time!

I like the fact that they start to open their hearts publicly. We're all humans and so are they.

That being said I say "Hats off!". But St. Anger is still a... strange record.

Does James Hetfield honestly think that after creating musical masterpieces like Kill Em All, Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets, Cliff Burton would listen to sub-par albums like Load, Re-Load and Saint Anger and somehow approve of it being representative of the name "Metallica"? Although I respect what that band has done, his statement falls short. Like the first poster said...

I'm just reading Cliff's last interview (printed in the latest issue of the german Metal Hammer magazine). There he clearly says that he mainly likes softer music than Metallica and would love to try something more melodious and slow some day. He also states that he likes the idea to add a more established and mainstream producer to future recording processes.

In my 20 years of metalmindedness I always learned that metal, in whatever form, was a lifestyle that bonded people into a solid famliy of headbangers.
Unfortunately these days it's all about competition and the battle between metalfans about what is true metal and what is not.
Pretty pathetic to my taste. Metal = Metal. I still like the old stuff yet i'm never afraid to embrace the new. Be it Mercyful Fate or Hate Eternal, Metallica or Cannibal Corpse.

Obviously you knew Cliff better than Hetfield did, so you're all in a better position to judge whether or not he'd approve of what modern Metallica are doing.

So, "if Cliff was still alive your band would have kept it's "Metal" sound or should I say their roots". Actually, Cliff was probably more responsible than any of them for developing more melodic or orchestral parts to their music - Hetfield said so himself. No other thrash Metal band was doing that around that time, so to say that they weren't already drifting from their metal roots would be wrong.

It's very sad to hear people going on about what Cliff would have liked and disliked. One thing is sure, One of Cliff's best freinds states that Cliff was very much into harmonies and that site of music, so does several interviews state his '' classical '' side. What is there to doubt about him being one of the pushers for the more melodical side of Metallica? When it comes to thrash, that is something Metallica actually discovered before their days with Cliff and Kirk. They played fast and heavy with Mustaine and Mcgovney too.

I'm really looking forward to see what Metallica might bring to the table on this upcomming album of theirs if Hetfield says that '' Cliff would probably like what we're doing '' since that to me obviously means a more melodical, yet heavy, side of Metallica. What we all remember as METALLICA. I hope they can live up to their expectations. I was let down by St. Anger that's for sure, let's see if they still have it, because they sure as hell still do live!

the Justice album was written entirely AFTER Cliff's death my friend... Lars said it in the 2 of One video, I believe he said "when we were WRITING songs for the Justice album in the fall of 87..." or something like that, I don't remember the exact words... but I remember he said 87... watch the video.

Also, the Justice album is musically the most complex one they have, in terms of song structures (The Frayed Ends of Sanity, for example), time signatures shifts (the 12/8 part in Eye of the Beholder, or the verse in Blackened in 6/4, to name a few), guitar solos (Shortest Straw could be one of Hammett's hardest solos to play) and so forth... so, If you think that the album is good because of it's complexity, blame Hetdield for it pal (and Cliff's influence, of course, BUT not a direct contribution).

I don't agree with what you said about ..."After that, the band was clueless at how to write the music they'd been making", because I believe that the black album is where they really had a clue of what they were doing in terms of making a song "flow"; whereas before, I think, in terms of composition, it was all about pasting (quite awesomely) different parts toghether, instead of having a very good riff and let the whole song grow from there (Enter Sandman)... I don't know, it's just my opinion...

Well, everyone else in the band went along with it, so who knows. If Kirk Hammet had died instead of Cliff people would probably be saying the same stuff... "Oh, Kirk would have hated St. Anger" or whatever. People like to idolize dead musicians (see: Kurt Cobain) and think that they would have never made any mistakes or bad music if they had lived.

Imagine if James Hetfield had died right after "...And Justice for All" or even "Master of Puppets". No one would ever say shit like "Well, he would have started playing shorter country influenced songs anyway". James Hetfield not only was in the same band as Cliff but lived in the same run down motels, probably shared the same groupies and clothes INCLUDING underwear (James' wearing them one day,Cliff the next)

James played on stage with Cliff every day Cliff was in the band till the day Cliff died.

He knew Cliff's interests better than anyone and as a fan I know Cliff's interests but James' was speaking as the musician that PLAYED with Cliff.

No need to give a guy shit when he was there and you were either in grade school, working at wendy's or a stain in the mattress when it happened.

I remember reading in Cliff's last interview that he predicted the demise of the thrash metal scene as well how he envisioned Metallica going for the softer sound in the future.

He mentioned that it felt good making REAL money for a change instead of using what they had to buy instruments and whatever else they may have needed.

James knows his shit,he was there when Cliff joined and was there when Cliff died.

Unlike anyone here on Blabbermouth or artists on the scene at the time that are still playing today James Hetfield was there the day Cliff joined Metallica and the day he tragically died so it may come as a shock to everyone but James KNOWS what he's talking about and what Cliff's influences were.

I can say these things because id rather believe what the member of Metallica says then som poster on Blabbermouth. James has stated several times that Cliff never cared about the genre "metal", good music was good music to Cliff. Load, Reload and S&M where all albums Cliff would have enjoyed, i believe, because it has been stated from the Metallica members themselves. Think about it, everyone can have their own opinions, but whos one to trust? James, lars kirk who where best friends with Cliff, or some dude on a forum? Believe what you want, but dont be so close minded and understand that a change of direction would have come even sooner if Cliff was still in the band, every single educated Metallica fan should know what cliff respected and liked. The integrity of Metallica has never vanished, which is to not be afraid to try something new and dont give a fuck about what other people think. That was Metallica back in 83, and thats still metallica. They play to please themselves, and every single musician should know how important that is. People can demand and MOP part 2, but if they dont fell comfortable about that, why should they do it? To please people? Thats selling out my friend.

Btw, Load, Reload and S&M were all in the same vein of music cliff enjoyed. Loose bluesier rock´nroll, and classical music.

Everyone has their own opinion on the quality of Metallica music today and yesterday however I think James deserves kudos for commenting on this sensative subject and giving honest heart felt answers about Cliff and his contributions to music in general.

Cut James some slack boys"

That's just it... you can tell that most of these morons only read the Blabbermouth Headline and preceded to bash from there. It's obvious they didn't read the article if all they can do is rag on that one statement...that was taken out of context to boot.

"There are only three guys on the entire planet who think Cliff would like modern Metallica; James, Lars and Kirk."

You mean the only 3 guys who really have credible say on the planet on the question?

Are you saying they wouldn't know what Cliff liked or hated like they never spent 3 years in the same band as the guy and shared how they felt with the guy on various issues, lived with him, shared the same girls and so on?

Get real: As much as Blabbermouth folks may not like Metallica's direction the only one that wasn't much of a metal head at the time Cliff was playing with Metallica was Cliff himself.

I think everyone is entitled to their opinion but at the same time I think people seem to forget that James played with Cliff,Kirk played with Cliff and Lars played with Cliff. If any 3 people on this green earth had any clue what Cliff wanted it was the three guys in the band he was with before his tragic passing and that would be METALLICA.

If any, he most be playing REAL METAL in a band with Chuck Schuldiner (DEATH), Ingo Swichtenberg (HELLOWEEN), Piggy (VOIVOD) and Paul Baloff (EXODUS), wherever they are...
The only good feeling that you have is Lars cock in your ass you fucking poser...

Do you think you knew Cliff better than James Hetfield did?

Didn't think so...

Lets say Metallica made every single album in the same manner as In justice for all, ride the lightening and master of puppets, the "true Metal sound" as a lot of you have ignorantly mentioned at nausium, you would be on here bitching about that, claiming they are "washed up", "cant write a good riff," "james is on the sauce again," "these guys are one dimentional hacks", etc.

I love when a band changes up there style, it shows diversity! Was "ST. Anger" a great record, certainly not! Was Load or reload that terrible? I dont think so. Were these records in question as great as "In justice for All or Master of puppets"? In terms of popularity, probably not,in record sales? probably better( except for ST. Anger) but it really doesnt matter to me. Its all perception and personal taste.

In 40 years of collecting and listening to a wide variety of music, I can say I have never "liked or loved" a band or individuals enitre catalogue of music , bar none! It would be a rarity if anyone could make that claim. I love metallica, but not all of there music.

Heres a simple little question for all you malcontents on this site. As some of you claim that Metallica is "dead" or washed up" why do they continue to sell out every single fucking venue that they enter? I think the answer is quite obvious, pukes! Metallica is one of the tightest bands to have ever set foot on stage! The music, the energy, the purity of sound is second to none! If you need to be reminded of this, check out 'binge & purge"and get a clue!

"knows more about what's he's talking than any single one poster that has grievance or even may agree with the statement.

Unlike anyone here on Blabbermouth or artists on the scene at the time that are still playing today James Hetfield was there the day Cliff joined Metallica and the day he tragically died so it may come as a shock to everyone but James KNOWS what he's talking about and what Cliff's influences were."

Well said Chris. I didn't know that you posted here as well as the Metallica boards?
