DAVE MUSTAINE Discusses MEGADETH's Legacy, His Feelings On METALLICA
- Nov. 4, 2006
|
|
In the October 2006 issue of U.K.'s Total Guitar magazine ( cover), MEGADETH mainman Dave Mustaine discusses his band's legacy and his feelings on METALLICA. Total Guitar: Who do you see most MEGADETH influence in? Mustaine: "I'm not sure of any particular bands that I have been able to influence, but if that's true, then I'm flattered. It is possible that bands have been influenced more by MEGADETH than METALLICA. Since the early 1980s, we have become completely different bands." Total Guitar: Looking at the current generation of metal bands, who strikes you as being original? Mustaine: "I like it when the bands have guitars in the songs, especially when there are solos. I don't like the death metal-style vocals. Most of the singers are really good, or they could be, but they're just scared to sing like I was. I like a lot of bands on the Gigantour." Total Guitar: What is your favorite METALLICA band memory? Mustaine: "Mainly that the three of us [ James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich and Mustaine] knew we were on to something big. I think that's why they did what they did and why I reacted the way that I did." Total Guitar: How closely did you follow METALLICA's career after you left? Mustaine: "I never even listened to 'St. Anger', so I have no idea what direction they have gone in. For all I know, you could tell me it was a country album." Total Guitar: Honestly, how do you think METALLICA would have progressed as a band if you'd stayed? Mustaine: "They would have got a lot better at fighting! I don't think things would be any different because Lars and James are very gifted musicians." Total Guitar: Looking back now, what did you think of Kirk [ Hammett] the first time you heard him play? Was he a worthy replacement? Mustaine: "I don't remember the first time I saw him play. They were an opener [presumably referring to Hammett's pre- METALLICA band EXODUS — Ed.] and I didn't notice him at all, really. Sadly, that sentiment hasn't changed. I think that is because he became world-famous playing my solos, or at least identifiable structures that were my solos." Total Guitar: Do you get on with Kirk? Mustaine: "I don't really know him." Total Guitar: How did you deal with rumors you heard about your firing from the band? Mustaine: "It was both sad and hilarious at the same time. I mostly dealt with it by trying to shelter my family as much as possible from all the really tough things that have been said or written. Sadly, the majority of all that stuff isn't even remotely true, but people still buy into it." Total Guitar: Have you spoken to James Hetfield since "Some Kind of Monster" was released? Mustaine: "No." Total Guitar: Did you feel vindicated when MEGADETH went on to be so successful? Mustaine: "I still have very charged emotions about the whole experience." Put this shit to bed. Metallica were huge beyone Mustaine's wildest dreams and him contributing some shit on their demos had nothing to do with it. Dave should focus on the fact his own band were pretty damn successful in it's own right, albeit not in quite the same way. But they had a popularity better than other bands out there, including those who never touched heroin.
I appreciate there's folks out there asking you the questions, Dave, but try and remember what you did by yourself rather than wallowing in what might have been.

How is hammett famous for playing his solos and his style..Kirk Hammett has a very unique style compared to Dave Mustaine..Remember kirk took lessons from Satriani after Kill em All..Hammett got famous for solos on songs like Fade to black, Creeping death, Sanitarium and battery and MOP.
Kirk is more infulenced by blues and melodic guitarist..I remember him mentioning some blues guitarist names and i have heard some of there stuff and i can see where gets style from...
Dave is a great guitar player but very different from hammett.

Megadeth's new album is gonna rip new assholes..... while Metallicas album... Rick Rubin or whoever is gonna help em out. Cannot save em. There is no hope. They were legends in there hay-day and I'll leave it at that.
The 2 new Megadeth songs I have heard.....and I am sure most of you have heard them too. Are a BIG STEP up and back to old school with some new tinges on them. It's gonna be a interesting album. I cannot wait to hear it. Especially Glen Drovers kick ass guitar-work.
Now the 2 new Metallica songs I heard....... they are probably THE worst songs I have heard from them. Well..... not the worse but pretty damn close. The only thing I thought was..."Rick Rubin is helpin them out and this is what they came up with... "WHAT the Fuc!@!@??????"

And I'm sorry but Kirk Hammett
His Vibrato SUCKS balls. For someone who is "blues influenced"
He needs to learn to bend some notes. He uses the "Wah" in place of Vibrato..... horrible. Same licks most of the time. Taking lessons from Joe Satriani..... wooooopdie dooooo doo. He obviously didn't learn shit.
Joe is great....but he's Mathematical. I prefer Steve Vai over Joe....... but then again I prefer JOHNNY WINTER or ROBBY KRIEGER over all of these players.

Leave Mustaine alone. It's the interviewers always who fucking ask about his past in Metallica.
I can see how that's frustrating, I got kicked out of a band myself, a local band, not even worth mentioning here on Blabbermouth. But still, it's been quite some time now, and people still keep asking the same shit.I feel sorry for Dave. And I don't even like him. He puts up with lots of shit.

I for one am glad that he didnt stay in metallica. I mean, yes, who knows what they would have created with Dave still in the band...maybe cliff would have never died for all we know either. But a metal world without megadeth and there would be something missing.

Yeah, after all, sales equals quality right? As shitty as Risk was, it didn't bomb. It just didn't sell as much as Load and Reload.
I love how fans of shitty bands are the ones talking about how important record sales are to determine what is good.

All the 80's Metallica songs that Dave had no input in are the best/most classic metallica songs. Seek and Destroy, Whiplash, Fade to Black, Bell Tolls, Creeping Death, Battery, MOP, Sanitarium, One, Harvester, Blackened, Dyers Eve... Fuck they did way better without dave's contributions. Their sound changed for the better after he left.

You are a dumb ass. Biggest one here too. Too ignorant to read and understand what people are posting here..
I don't care if Kirk played the same solos as Daves on kill em all. He did not get famous for those solos and he is not fucking remmebered for those solos..
Read any list of well known solos..There is nothing from kill em all..Kirk is famous for solos like Fade to Black, one, MOP, disposable heroes, unforgiven..e.tc..
Those are some of the most popular rock/metal solos in the world of solos...And these solos are nothing like Mustaine style.. Mustaine could not have composed these solos this way if those riffs were given to him..
Now i know there are many great solos that are not well known by great guitarist that are not well known. But we are talking about things that are popular as that was what Dave Mustaine was referring to..'becoming famous for'
I cannot help if you ignorant to song writing...I don't care if a guitarist can sweep pick and shred at million notes per seconds..If you cannot compose a solo that matches the song in terms of the mood, the feel of the song and all you can do is technical wizadry that does not fit what the song is trying to be,..then you suck..
Next..I love megadeth..Marty Friedman is one of my all time favourite guitarist...Although i continue to listen to both megadeth and metallica..I can understand that Dave is jealous, self centered and stubborn prick and metallica are running out of ideas at an exponential rate.
But that does not affect the fact that kirk hammet had composed some of the best guiatr solos..they may be simple and not technically impressive..but it made the songs more human...

I may not like St.Anger but give me 10 copies of that over any recent Megadeth.
I admit it,this is Dave Mustaine and had I not seen Metallica mentioned in the headline I probably would've ignored it like I have everything else released by Megadeth in the last 12 years.
I don't think Black,Load,Reload or St.Anger are Metallica's greatest albums but 3 of those 4 are not musically bad albums.
IF you wanted to be technical and knew a little something about MUSICAL composition/craft just maybe you'd find it a little easier to respect Metallica for releasing mostly everything that it has for the last 15 years (St.Anger was CRAP)
You might not find too many ear grinding solos on any of those albums but give me proper composition that you're capable of over that ANYTIME.
As far as Megadeth, they could release the thrashiest material they've put out since they released Peace Sells and I just wouldn't care.
My new title for Megadeth's new one Megadeth-Cook Em' All they're finished

Kirk could pluck a better solo out of his ass than this delusional fool.

Oh, I'm sorry. I guess I made a mistake. You're right, it is funny how I said Dave is leagues ahead of James. I mean, playing/writing riffs that are much more technical than James' riffs doesn't necessarily mean that Dave is better. Oh wait, Yes it does.

Okay this was supposed to be a Dave and Metallica article if im correct where in the world Overkill got drag in and having Playing with Spiders/Skullkrusher is in the same sentence with Enterthesandman..That song is ten time betters and well written than Entersandman considering that all the lates effort of Overkill after Horoscope was something like Metallicas And Justice for All havent catch that same magic for some reason maybe all the band members being change and replace who knows.. but with some old school metal bands we all grew up listening to they had there moments and awesome records they made, my opinion and some could bash me for this but The black Album is good but doesnt come close to either Overkills Year of Decay or their follow up which i think the best album they put out ever Horoscope.. but thats my opinion...

Kirk was recruited a couple of weeks before they recorded KEA. Bascially what he did with the solos was keep the first and last couple of bars and then re-write the middle. Based on all of my early bootlegs, what Kirk did was a hell of a lot better than what Dave had come up with.
From an overall standpoint, Dave is a better guitarist than Kirk. This is because of his mastery of writing rythm, not soloing. They aren't good comps for each other because their soloing styles are quite different from each other.

Metallica may as well be a country band because that's what they are when compared to Megadeth.
