ANDREAS KISSER: There Will Be No SEPULTURA Reunion In 2007 - Nov. 15, 2006
Thorsten Zahn, chief editor of Germany's Metal Hammer magazine (web site), recently conducted an exclusive interview with SEPULTURA guitarist Andreas Kisser about the persistent rumors of a reunion with the band's former frontman, Max Cavalera. What follows is a transcript of the interview in its entirety (English-language translation provided to BLABBERMOUTH.NET by Thorsten Zahn):

Metal Hammer: In January 2006 Igor Cavalera [drums] denied the rumors that he was going to leave the band. In June he made his departure official because he wanted to stay more time in Brazil and take care of his family. Was this the real reason he left SEPULTURA?

Andreas: It's hard for me to say, because he should answer this question. From our point of view, it was okay that he didn't want to leave the country to tour. But we needed a drummer, because we had a new album out. When Max left the band ten years ago it was a shock to us, because we had to rebuild our whole career. We did not only lose Max, we lost everything with him — the manager and the confidence of the record label. It took a while to renew everything, but we did it. With Igor we talked for the last two or three years. He was tired being on the road and was also separating from his wife, whom he has three kids with and was living together with for the last 15 years. It is difficult for every man to deal with that. At the same time he got a new wife and a new baby was born, so he decided to stay in Brazil. This was the reason he left the band and we were prepared that this would happen. Our intention was really to keep him in the band and play the "Dante XXI" tour with him. Then, at the end of the cycle he would have been able to decide what to do. But he had different plans and needed to leave SEPULTURA to start something new.

Metal Hammer: Igor recently got in contact with his brother Max again, and he is now talking about touring again in several interviews. Did he lie to you and to the fans?

Andreas: The Cavaleras are very difficult. (laughs) I cannot say if Igor has lied. I think he is very confused. I can feel that, because I see what stuff he is saying in the press. First of all, Max never wanted to talk to us again and now he is talking about a reunion. The stuff he says is very contradictory. But what can I say? We keep going. We will go on tour in the U.S. with SWORN ENEMY in November and then we will hopefully be on tour with KREATOR in Europe in February of 2007. We always chose not to be a part of this type of discussion in the press, because it turns out to be the same as ten years ago when Max left SEPULTURA. He was saying so many different things to different magazines and we told our side of the story just once. The Cavaleras can say whatever they want, but this reunion shit is really disturbing, because it has been going on now for six or seven months. The rumors started when Max left the band in 1996 and are getting stronger these days because Igor left.

Metal Hammer: Igor also shared the stage with his brother at the D-Low Memorial Festival on August 17, 2006 at the Marquee Theatre in Tempe, Arizona when they played "Attitude" and "Roots" together.

Andreas: I think it is great that they are talking to each other again. The situation was ridiculous for him and Max. But just because they are in touch with each other again is no reason for me to play with them again.

Metal Hammer: Why is Max talking about the SEPULTURA reunion all the time these days?

Andreas: I have no idea, man. He is forcing the situation, but that is not the way to do it. He should really approach it a little bit more professionally. First of all, we all have to talk to each other again and then we can try to do something good and decent for the fans. So far there is nothing going on regarding a reunion — these are all rumors. We wanted to stay quiet about this, but it is starting to hurt the work me, Paulo [Xisto], Derrick [Green] and Jean [Dolabella] are doing. This is the reason why I'm giving this interview. People are more interested in a possible reunion than in our upcoming "Dante XXI" tour. I just wanted to make clear to our fans that there is no reunion going on next year. That's for sure. With SEPULTURA it was always like that: you will get our answer on stage. I can say thousands of words here today to you, but what counts happens on stage. It is important for us to go out and play live and after that people can judge for themselves.

Metal Hammer: What about the statement from Igor that you have to give the name, the trademark SEPULTURA, back after you finish the "Dante XXI" tour, because you do not have the rights to use it?

Andreas: I don't know what he is talking about. He left the band and neither he nor Max have any rights to the name. Max gets his royalties for all the records he played on, that's it. We did not kick Igor out. We wanted to keep him and finish the cycle. The name SEPULTURA is with us — me Paulo and Derrick — and Igor knows that. Anyone who says anything different is lying.

Metal Hammer: It sounds like you have a disturbed relationship with Igor these days. Or how would you describe it?

Andreas: It is fine, we still talk. Last week it was the birthday of my third kid and his children came to party with us. Me and Igor have a very long relationship that includes family and friendship. We don't talk as much as we used to, but there are no hard feelings. There is no fight going on.

Metal Hammer: And between you and Max?

Andreas: The last time I talked to him was in London, when we did the last show for the "Roots" tour. This was in December 1996. I have seen SOULFLY twice — once in Los Angeles, six or seven years ago and this year in New York. I was just there to see the gig, we did not talk. Unfortunately me and Max have no connection. We also never had the chance to play together on the road with SOULFLY and SEPULTURA, so there was no conversation within the last ten years.

Metal Hammer: You say that there definetely will be no reunion next year. What if the Cavalera brothers just do it?

Andreas: Well, then this won't be a reunion. (laughs)

Metal Hammer: They say that SEPULTURA nowadays with you, Derrick, Paulo and Jean is not SEPULTURA.

Andreas: They can say whatever they want. They are free to have their own opinion, but I don't care what they think about the band I play in these days. SEPULTURA is what we are today, we have the support of thousands of fans. We still represent the message of SEPULTURA and keep our integrity and our spirit. This is the reason why we are still here. In the end we still love what we are doing and that is what matters.

Metal Hammer: Aren't you just pissed that Igor and Max did not ask you to reunite with them yet?

Andreas: No. I don't see a reunion as a step forward. People act like nothing happened after 1996 — that is stupid. If we really decide to play together again in future, it should be a chance to start something new. Max had experiences with SOULFLY, we had ours with SEPULTURA. This should be a positive basis to create something positive and not only to copy the "Roots" tour like nothing happened [in the last 10 years]. I can see it happening soon, but we have to talk to each other first. We did the best stuff in our career when we discussed ideas and talked to each other. We did crazy stuff and always had a good time. That is the way it should be. I don't wanna be a slave to a name, like Max and Igor are trying to be. That is kind of weak. I'm not pissed — they can do whatever they want — but they shouldn't stand in our way. We respected that they left SEPULTURA, now they should give some respect back that we still are in the band.

Metal Hammer: Max and Igor are doing good promotion for a possible reunion, because when it happens there will be loads of money involved — that both of them want to have.

Andreas: Don't get me wrong, I want to have the money, too. But to come to a state like that the situation has to be cleared up. There are a lot of people and egos involved, [and] that will take time. This is what all reunions have in common. Take BLACK SABBATH, MÖTLEY CRÜE or ANTHRAX: They all had to overcome difficulties before they could get back together again. But we haven't even started talking, so there is nothing going on right now.

Metal Hammer: To make this clear: If the conditions were acceptable, you wouldn't say no to a SEPULTURA reunion?

Andreas: It must be something different. I don't want to put the band back together again, go on stage and collect my paycheck. That is one of the reasons I don't see this happening within the next year. People would be disappointed, because it would be crap. If we do it the right way, have everybody involved and talk to each other, it would be possible — but not that soon. It will take at least a year to prepare a big thing like this.

Metal Hammer: Who would manage the band? Gloria [Cavalera, Max's wife/manager] was one of the reasons why Max left SEPULTURA.

Andreas: Yeah, that is right, and she is still around. That is the point — we need to start talking again and have a conversation like grown-up people.

Metal Hammer: It is also direspectful to the work you did with Derrick. He is nearly as long in the band as Max.

Andreas: This is another side of the story. We cannot say, "Thanks a lot, see you later" to Derrick. He is a part of it and one of the reasons why we are still strong today. He came into the band, brought his talent and ideas and we created something new together. We have to be careful not to destroy what we built. It is direspectful, not only to him, also to our fans all around the globe.

Metal Hammer: Does Derrick have the same standing for the fans like Max had years ago?

Andreas: That is difficult to compare, because the time is different. Ten years ago the world was different, and not only in the metal scene. Both of them, Derrick and Max, created a style around the SEPULTURA music. That makes the two very special compared to other metal singers.

Metal Hammer: You stated that the rumors affect your work these days. Did you talk about the situation within the band?

Andreas: Of course, the stuff is on the Internet, and we talked about it. But we try to stay away from this media panic. There is nothing official that says "SEPULTURA reunites again." All is based on rumors. SEPULTURA today is Andreas Kisser, Paulo Xisto, Derrick Green and Jean Dolabella. We want to tour as much as we can in the next year and if we start talking again, there might be something possible for 2008 or 2009. Now it seems to be a dream, nothing real. But it is possible, because we are all still alive. But not now and not next year.

Metal Hammer: Could you also think about recording a new record with Igor, Max and Paulo?

Andreas: I don't know. Only time will tell.

Looks to me kile DanteXXI is losing money by all this reunion talk so Andreas has to keep up the appearances. Once they do the leg in support of it I wouldn't be surprised at all if they kicked Derrick's sorry rap ass out of there and did a proper old school Sepultura album.

To me Sepultura ends with "Arise" and they haven't been able to top that ever since, nor has Max with his Soulfly.

imagine 2 parents who have a child they share with their family and the world, then one simply just "abandons" it one day...leaving the one parent and brothers and sisters to take care of it...

then imagine 10 years later, the other parent abandons the child as well ...to run off with the first parent who abandoned it in the first place...i'd assume those left behind would be PISSED but would still press on..

now imagine the parents coming back and trying to "lay down the law"...who could respect that?

I don't even see how in this day and age a Sepultura reunion would garner huge money...they got dropped after one album on a major label...people just need to wake up...

I just hope it is done the right way. I like what Sepultura is doing now, but it just doesn't compare to their earlier work to me. They would have been better off renaming or starting a new band when Max left. Then, even if it has 2 or 3 of the same members there would not be as much comparison. They'd have to start over fanbase wise, but they practically did anyways. Plus, then they wouldn't have to worry about reunion rumors hurting what they are doing.

Regardless, Andreas was very cool about all of this. And while he wasn't a "founding" member, check out some of the songwriting and lyric writing credits from the classic era and you'll see what a great creative force he was in the band.

That way the money all stays in house. And the only reason I put Soulfly before Derrick is so that Max's voice can rest.

Very honest and respectful posture from Andreas. I'd like to see them reunited as much as any longtime Sepultura fan, but I totally agree with him, not only about the fact that they need to talk it up first, but also in the point that Igor should really respect their choice of completing the tour and then end the band.
They respected is decision to leave, he should respect their choice too.

That's absolutely ridiculous egotistical bullshit. If I were Andreas I would be cursing up a storm and calling him out on acting EXACTLY the same way he acted when he quit the band. Max hasn't changed, Soulfly is a flop and he wants to make the money from the Sepultura stuff. The only bad thing about this interview is that Andreas didn't 100% say no to the entire idea. For those of you slagging the current Sepultura line-up, have any of you truly listened to Dante XXI? As someone who has always been a big fan of Sepultura since the "Arise" days, I have to say that in my opinion, "Dante XXI" is right up there with "Roots" and "Chaos A.D.". The playing it top-notch, the riffs are killer, and the entire concept approach to the record is great...it flows very well. By third time I listened to this record, it clicked for me and it will easily make my Top Ten Metal records of '06 list. What Sepultura accomplished with Max was great...they really did change the whole scene and brought a new sound to the world. I admire them for that, and Max's contribution cannot be diminished. However, Max quit Sepultura, and then, of course, Igor quit Sepultura. It took the current lineup a long time to finally come with something great, but they did it. "Dante XXI" stands up to any of the Max-era stuff and true fans should really give it a chance. Just because a founding member (or two) leave a band doesn't mean the band ceases to exist. If the remaining members wish to carry on, they have every right to do so. Futhermore, who's to say that if the "classic' lineup reformed they'd even sound that good? It's not a matter of simply flicking a switch on and then "poof", you have another classic Sepultura record. I agree with Andreas...look at that crappy Anthrax reunion...Motley Crue, etc. It all sucks. Sometimes you can't go back, and as true artists, it's better to push ahead. I admire Sepultura for never looking back and I can only hope that the the reunion Max speaks of never happens. Derrick's a great frontman, and he's extremely passionate about the band. I'm much more interested to hear whatever they do as a follow-up to the amazing "Dante XXI". Let Igor join Soulfly, or something.

So Sepultura ended for me when they released Roots, maybe even with Chaos AD.

Sepultura 2006 has nothing to do with Sepultura 1988.

Sepultura can continue w/out the Cavalera's for two reasons:
1. they didn't leave at the same time
2. the music speaks louder than the name (ie: the whole is greater than the sum of its parts)

Aren't you tired of talking about Max for ten years? Your interview makes you sound so jealous.

You said, "We did not only lose Max, we lost everything with him — the manager and the confidence from the record label. It took a while to renew everything, but we did it."
- You must be in denial using the name, using the lyrics, USING ALL THINGS MAX CREATED. You stole the name Max made when he was thrirteen, all of us diehards know THIS IS THE TRUTH!

Qiut talking. Get back on earth. You are just a guitar player living of somebody elses riffs.

Andreas makes a real godo point about how a reunion jus can't be done like that. They need to sit down and sort out differences. And whats cool is he's open to it. Hes not saying no

Good on andreas \m/

Are you stupid? The reunion already happened August 17th 2006 in Phoenix! When are you going to stop giving interviews about yourself? You and Paolo are the least important in the reunion!

How is Andreas going to lose respect for holding his ground? Why the HELL should he kiss Max's ass after all of this shit? I think he'd lose WAY more respect by cashing in like Anthrax did...look what that got them. Nothing. Anthrax is shit now.
The chemistry between Andreas, Paulo, and Derrick is good and Dante XXI is a great album. It's in the tope three Sepultura records, easily. Soulfly was, and is, shit. Let the Cavelera brothers start another new band and leave Sepultura alone. They willingly left the band, just like Roger Waters left Pink Floyd, and yet Gilmour, Mason, and Wright continued the band, as they should have. Get over it. Convicted in Life!

Well, everyone has their own opinion...and you are all right in a way
I'm an old Sepultura fan seen them on their Arise tour and Roots in Australia...To be honest I wouldn't go see them these days if u gave me a free ticket...someone up the list mentioned about Napalms being a totally different line up ,bad comparison Napalm the opposite of Sep
got better and more aggressive with every album saw them twice once in Makedonia and last time with Suffocation in Osaka Japan where I know live they were fukin intense ...Main point I was Im in a similar situation at the moment I was the gutar lead man of a pretty cool death band over 10 back and we were young and had our fun only released one demo got record labels interested real soon tons of fanzine stuff all over the world we had a few misunderstandings and there it was all over ...Now where is this leading to?Max wrote all the catchy cool shit while Andreas did some solos in the band and a few riffs ...I sympathize with Max he was flyin high thought he could nail it with another band Sulfy that desnt work as well as Seps did no he has realized what he has done and he knows that he cant do better than Arise Roots Chaos Ad
Now at the same time Andreas is shitting his pants that the main songwriter wants his band back ...If u ever write songs man they r like your children not the band!!!!!!!!! like some kid said earlierI know this it sucks its like somone is sucking your effort and sweat like someone said earlier Im living it at d moment on a much lower popularity level Im not trying to brag on about how good my band was but if u ever knew Suffer from Sydney please reply now I have plenty of new stuff livin in Japan and ready to record my Suffer shit at my own pace former members reformed behind my back...I know that Max made a mistake to leave Seps he should have kicked Andreas out or somethin...well I would love to see the Cavalera brothers over Sepultura with their rap singer like someone said KEEP METAL REAL !!!U rule!
PS being in a band is not as easy as u think thats why this is a long post!!!!

Sepultura is a great metal band. Max and igor started it, then max left. But we got derrick and he's a great screamer plus the message of sepultura has only gotten stronger. Why complain? I absolutely love igors drumming, but if it's over it's over. Turn the goddamn page! I just hope this drummer replaces igor as well as derrick did max. Let's face it, andreas and paulo are sepultura, and they're not going anywhere! That's what's up. Period

Oh and I like ALL SEPULTURA ALBUMS! From bestial devastation to dante xxi, this is without a doubt the most amazing metal band ever! Why judge the evolution of something unparalleled? Would you complain if your new computer looked different and ran faster? Bunch of fucking pussies! Start your own band if sepultura is'nt good enough. I'm sure you'll do GREAT!

I'm not one to disrespect any musician, because it's tough out there. Derrick Green, as any musician can possibly imagine, has enough to put up with between his own critics and the old school Max/Igor folks. When Max left, he left a large pair of shoes to fill. Derrick's effort should be at least recognized, if not respected. Having said that, I do have to admit that I'd like to harken back to the old days and see Max and Andreas share the stage again. They really are a force to be reckoned with. I was lucky enough to see the original lineup when they made a stop in Greensboro, NC with Type O Negative and Ozzy. As you can imagine, that show changed my life forever. I went thinking about Ozzy, but left thinking about Sepultura. If a reunion becomes possible, then I'm all for it.

And to the Max haters: I am almost 99% sure that anyone who bashes the new Soulfly album has heard 0% of its material. Either that or they just don't appreciate finely crafted songs. It has a distinct flavor of vintage Sepultura, but is uniquely seasoned with some of his modern influences.

Hey brothers i remember back in 1990 when i first see that pic in the metal mania magazine , the cover of beneath the remains when i notice that this band is coming from Brazil i was curious so i was reading everything from them in different magazines even in hit parader and metal maniac they talk about this band , so i wait until a friend of mine went to the USA and i told him to buy a few tapes.

i remember he bought :

SLAYER ...............HELLAWAITS
KING DIAMOND ...THEM
NUCLEAR ASSAULT...SURVIVE
TESTAMENT......SOULS OF A BLACK
DIO..................LOCK UP THE WOLVES
OVERKILL..........YEARS OF DECAY
IRON MAIDEN ....NO PRAYER FOR THE DYING
and finally
SEPULTURA........BENEATH THE REMAINS

i heard all the other record mentioned above and i was very excited of what i heard from those classic bands and i really enjoy those albums a lot.

but i remember i didn't put any attention to the Sepultura record that day , because to have a tape from slayer, testament, iron maiden , nuclear assault, over kill and Ronnie James Dio why I'm going to put attention to Sepultura a Brazilian band than i never heard before no way I'm not going to do that.

so after i listen those records and learn the songs i remmember one day that the tape of sepultura still intact i took it from one bag in my room still unopened and i opened .

yes the classic smell of new and everything soooooo fucking new i put the tape in my Sony Walkman that day and go out because my city La Romana have a blackout that day and walking i press play and my friends what i heard that day i can't explain it , there's no word how i can explain the rush of that fucking tape .

ooooohhhhhh!!!!!!!!! man that band Sepultura was the best rush i ever had in my fucking life , since that day Sepultura was the best band around for me.

songs like inner self, lobotomy, stronger than hate, sarcastic existence , slaves of pain, hungry, oh Jesus blow me away those days.

since that day i was obsessed with Sepultura then the arise album came out and my obsession grew like you never imagine, chaos ad was release and i saw then in a television channel name the box "music television that you control" i remember i was watching war for territory and then slave new world oooohhhhhhhh!!!!!.

i became the # 1 fan of them , later roots was release and then the break up.

TO BE HONEST GUYS THESE NEW SEPULTURA BAND IS A DISASTER , A SHAME I DON'T LIKE ANYTHING FROM THEM , THE NEW LINE UP OOOHHHHH!!!!!!! HORRIBLE I REALLY HATE IT .
