EDDIE VAN HALEN: The Ball Is In DAVE LEE ROTH's Court
- Dec. 11, 2006
|
|
|
Eddie Van Halen spoke to Guitar World magazine about the current status of VAN HALEN following the departures of vocalist Sammy Hagar and bassist Michael Anthony.
Rumors continue to swirl that original singer David Lee Roth, who was replaced by Hagar in the mid-1980s, will return to the fold, despite years of enmity. Roth, who has recently worked as a radio DJ and a paramedic, told Billboard.com in May that he saw it "absolutely as an inevitability."
"I'm telling Dave, 'Dude, get your ass up here and sing, bitch! Come on!'" Eddie told Guitar World. "As it stands right now, the ball is in Dave's court. Whether he wants to rise to the ocassion is entirely up to him, but we're ready to go."
Eddie has brought his 15-year-old son, Wolfgang, into VAN HALEN as the veteran rock band's new bass player. Father and son, along with Eddie's drummer brother Alex, have been rehearsing for a 2007 tour.
"Wolfgang breathes new life into what we're doing," said Eddie. "He brings youthfulness to something that's inherently youthful. He's only been playing bass for three months, but it's spooky. He's locked tight and puts an incredible spin on our shit. The kid is kicking my ass! He's spanking me now, even though I never spanked him. To have my son follow in my footsteps on his own, without me pushing him into it, is the greatest feeling in the world."

I'm not too excited about this because Michael Anthony is not with them. Yeah, I know he's just a lowly bassist, but his background vocals were a key part of VH's sound!

What is Ed thinking? They need Michael just for the harmonys alone.. Im sure his sons ok for a fifteen yr old..but its not cool to put a 15 yr old in VH!! Maybe Dave will accidentally throw a kick to Eddies head and it just might smarten the dude up...

Are you freakin' kidding me?! I know that they'll be plenty of suckers lining up for tickets- but who in their right mind would pay $125 a pop to see a fifteen year old who's learning how to play bass.
It's bad enough that one had to put up with Eddie's meth induced slop on guitar during the last tour. If you add this to the mix, then you have the recipe for total disaster; and that's not including the fact that you know some stuff will go down between he and Dave.
If Ed wanted to do this right, they would tour with Michael. Some things never change, however. Eddie was and will always be an egomaniacal prick!!

Given 3 months, I could learn Michael Anthony's bass lines and I've never picked up a guitar or bass.
I actually wonder if DLR will hold out due to Michael Anthony situation. Michael has slagged him a bit as of late, but he may have loyalties to the original VH.
Dave has been begging for this - it'd be hard to believe he won't come around.

So everyone knows there are going to be negotiations with each of their attorneys and managers and crap like that if Dave comes back to the fold to do a tour, but how hilarious would it be if one of DLR's demands was for Anthony to be included. Wonder who they would turn to if EVH shoots that down ?

2. If Eddie's clean, then it's on!
3. Who cares about the harmonies, you think Van Halen hasn't used backing tapes for the last 20 years????
4. Would it not be the funniest fucking thing to se a 15 year old kid do the Jack Daniels bass solo schtick?
5. I just hope one day, before it's too late, that VH does what Yes did on the Union tour and bring everyone. Maybe even have Extreme open!

The most expendable part to any band? How about Rush, or Primus, or 1/2 of the punk bands out there? Give a little more respect to the bass. Our job is stand there and make guitarists sound better... personally I think the vocals are the least important, but I know I'm the minority there so I'll just shut up about it.

Eddies statement is basically a slap in the face to Michael. His kid will be playing to a backing track along with a vocal track. Nobody starts playing an instrument for 3 months and then goes on a world tour. It doesn't matter that he plays guitar. Its a totally different instrument. He'll just ride the "e" then the "a".
Oh and Slayer F'ing rules.

I don't care what ya say, as soon as DLR quits the band, I'm going to be taking over the position of lead vocalist. I've been singing for well over 3 months.
Once I'm in the mighty Van Halen, I will kick Alex out of the band. He'll be replaced by Eric Singer. Then I'm kicking out Eddie and replacing him with Tommy Thayer....finally, I'll kick myself out and replace me with Paul Stanley.
Wolfie, however, will remain. He has to be better than Gene Simmons.

If you're a decent guitar player you could get the basslines down for a Van Halen set in three months. You wouldn't be a pro bass player but you could pull the gig off. Putting your son on bass when you could get a pro in with one phone call is pretty stupid.
Eddie Van Halen has made me ponder the difference between "washed up" and "has-been". Washed up refers to somebody whose past output is of lasting historical importance but who has nothing of substance to offer in the present time nor nor is likely to contribute anything of value in the future. Has-been is somebody who was famous at one time but whose contribution is no longer important after their fame dies.

I'm glad to see that alot of us rockers havent lost our minds as did our Idols. Just wit till DLR grabs Eddie by the head and gives him a noogy. We'll se if DLR's six pack can take the blunt end of a guitar to his ribs.
Roger Waters had his kid sit in with Ozric Tentacles on keyboards and it was a disaster. His keyboards weren't working and the lights were on him and he stood there playng with his dread locks and expected the rest of the show to hault instread of faking something and at least trying to look like he was ripping.
I have to say DLR is a double edge sword. I absolutely love his work, but I have also walked out on him in concert because he's such dork. But then i like alot of things he has to say, and i also think alot of what he say's is plain moronic.
Bottom line: If they can't do it we'll all know when the reviews come in. I may just wait till the whole fiasco is edited and put on VH1's " What the Hell Did They Do" ahah a ha hahaa
