NINE INCH NAILS Mainman On New CD: 'This Is Not A Particularly Friendly Record' - Dec. 28, 2006
NINE INCH NAILS mastermind Trent Reznor has revealed more information about the group's upcoming album, tentatively due in early 2007. In a December 27, 2006 blog entry on the official NIN fan club web site The Spiral, Reznor writes, "Usually when I finish a record, I have to go into battle with the people whose job is to figure out how to sell the record. The only time that didn't happen was 'With Teeth'. This time, however, I'm expecting an epic struggle. This is not a particularly friendly record and it certainly doesn't sound like anything else out there right now. Artists these days are not encouraged to experiment or take risks, and my punishment is on its way.

"Feeling physically run-down and emotionally insecure at this moment, and baffled as to why I feel the need to share this with you!"

The next NINE INCH NAILS album will follow 2005's "With Teeth", which was the group's first collection of new material in six years.

NINE INCH NAILS will chronicle the tour in support of its 2005 comeback album "With Teeth" with the DVD "Beside You in Time", due February 27 via Interscope. The main body of the project features 19 songs, two of which ("Right Where It Belongs" and "Beside You in Time") can be viewed from alternate camera angles.

Trailers from "Beside You in Time" can be viewed on the band's web site. The DVD will be available in standard form as well as in HD and Blu-Ray, although the regular edition will include audio mixes in Dolby Digital Stereo, Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS 5.1.

Reznor played the first solo show of his career on October 21 at Neil Young's Bridge School Benefit outside San Francisco, according to Billboard.com. Reznor was backed only by a four-piece string section as he played subdued versions of NINE INCH NAILS tracks such as "Piggy", "The Fragile" and "Hurt".

Used to love NIN but haven't been able to get into his newer stuff. Here's to hoping he'll get into the old groove again and bring us some good shit.

I agree with everything blainrichardson said as well.
Bands really need to deliver the goods when they talk about their new music beforehand.

I thought The Fragile was a really great album. With Teeth was ok. hopefully the new one will be good.

Yeah, well Trent has a history of doing just that...he said The Fragile was going to be darker and heavier than The Downward Spiral, and it was. He said With Teeth was going to be more streamlined and less abrasive, and it was. That album wasn't as good as it could have been, I was a bit disappointed with it after 6 years off, but it still had some great songs on it. I have a feeling this one will be a serious contender for best album of 2007.

"anywho, I love when bands say "our next album is gonna heavier/darker", or in this case not friendly." -- I think he's talking from a marketing standpoint because it's not just cliche NIN stuff.

Reznor is still one of my favorite artists after all these years, but I don't think the overly aggressive stuff suits him that well anymore, even if it is what he's feeling.

I saw the show at Coachella 2 years ago and I have to say, of all the new stuff, the in-your-face stuff like You Know What You Are rang really hollow and derivative for me. And I love classics like Wish, March of the Pigs, Happiness in Slavery, all the aggro songs, but I think it's a step backwards for him.

The Fragile and most of With Teeth were progressive and forward-thinking, mixing in elements from soul, pop, rock and funk as well as the electronic moodscapes and introspective downers he does so well.

Not saying all of the aggression should be stripped out, but hopefully it feels fresher this time. Fingers crossed that "not friendly" means some kind of wacko Kid-A type compositional experiment. I don't listen to that album all that much (or Amnesiac), but I'd still love to see where Reznor goes when he really wants to rip the walls down.

Actually, Reznor stated his love for Radiohead in Kerrang! a few years ago...

Packd like sardines in a crushd tin box = All the love in the world

I would like Reznor / NIN to go back to the more electronic perspective of, say, Downward Spiral and Fragile…

Lets see now...
Looking forward, indeed!

It's all corporate bullshit, and pretentious bs at that!
As John Lydon put it: "Trent Reznor I've met: And he's got his head so far up his arse it's a miracle he can still walk!"

and thus many here will deride them. i used to HATE them with a passion ("head like a hole" played 24/7 formed this impression) but...
over time i gradually and grudgingly grew to really like them.

i especially liked The Fragile and thought it had some really great sounds and was pretty original. the critics thought it far too long but fuck em, it was a great double CD.

i didn't mind the last one either. amazing single (if you like clubby kind of industrial).

can't wait. and for what it's worth i'm listening to "Live like an angel, die like a devil" right this moment, just to show thrashers can dig stuff beyond metal.

cheers.

I love NIN to death.... Definitely one of my favorite bands.... With Teeth was more straight forward... I think it was a good cd because he needed to mix things up and change his sound a little.... Be more in your face instead of hiding behind layers and layers of Techno..... It kinda had the garage rock sound to it too.....But i think people will appreciate this new cd more because it sounds like it'll be a little more back to NIN's signature sound.... WE need Brutalness.... and I know he'll deliver.... I think we've been waiting for this since 99's The Fragile...

With Teeth is a great album, but coming from Nine Inch Nails, I was expecting something darker and angrier. I guess it was his "renewal recored". Honestly, I hope there is something that can compare to The Downward Spiral. I hope he's up for this experimentation again...I mean, The Fragile was an experimental album and it was #1 on the charts one week, then it completely dropped off the next. Sad, but true. I believe The Fragile is listenable if you have an acquired taste for that sort of thing...I can listen to it all the way through, then put it away for a few months and not desire it again. Don't get me wrong, I love Trent's work, but I just hope I don't get dissapointed with an emo breed of NIN.
