ANTHRAX Guitarist SCOTT IAN: 'The Reunion Is Over'
- Jan. 24, 2007
|
|
|
ANTHRAX guitarist Scott Ian has issued the following statement via the band's official fan club site, CDC:
"Finally, we're going back to work. We're going to Chicago to work our asses off and write a record. It's time. We're ready. One problem... no singer.
"We were offered a direct support slot on a major tour this spring and Joey [Belladonna, vocals] decided he did not want to move forward. The reunion is over. We tried to make it work but I guess that's the problem, you can't 'make' something work. It's gotta be natural and at least becoming a band again and playing live was.
"Over the course of around 140 shows we became a better band than we ever were before from 1984 - 92. The shows we played from April 2005 through October 2006 were incredible and some of the best gigs we've ever played. Doing Donington again was mind-blowing, Graspop was insane, the insanity in Finland, Chicago, Milwaukee, three times in L.A.!!!, three times across Western Canada!!, Glasgow!!!!!, London!!!, the Nokia show in NY, the Starland show in NJ, JUDAS PRIEST!, ROB ZOMBIE!, Gigantour!!, Australia!!!, Japan!!!!!!, really, there's not a bummer in 19 months.
"Thank you from the very depths of my soul for being the best fans in the world. We got to relive something that I never thought we could and it turned out better than I ever thought it would. We didn't have to force it, it just happened and it was great.
"My curiosity was piqued by the idea of what ANTHRAX would sound like now with Joey singing. Over the last few months we've discussed this endlessly to no avail. The problems that were there could not be fixed no matter how hard we tried and in the end Joey made the decision.
"I know a lot of you out there are disappointed by this and that's the last thing we ever want. None of us want to disappoint. If we were meant to make a reunion record we would've. Some things look easy on paper but the reality is that they are impossible and what works for one band doesn't work for others. Maybe we could've forced something and cashed in on a new record but that's not the way we operate. My reality is I feel we have some unfinished business with the 'We've Come for You All' lineup and I will do my best to finish it.
"I hope you can find it in your hearts to support all of us in whatever happens going forward.
"Charlie [Benante, drums], Frankie [Bello] and I are excited about creating new music and for now we will focus on that and write another killer ANTHRAX record."
ANTHRAX's most recent studio album, "We've Come for You All" (featuring John Bush on lead vocals), was released in May 2003 through Sanctuary Records in the U.S. and Nuclear Blast in Europe. The CD shifted just under 10,000 copies in the U.S. during its first week of release to debut at No. 122 on The Billboard 200 chart.
The 2005 reunion of the "classic" ANTHRAX lineup of singer Joey Belladonna, guitarists Scott Ian and Dan Spitz, bassist Frank Bello and drummer Charlie Benante was followed by the release of the band's most comprehensive "best of" collection ever issued, the two-CD retrospective "Anthrology: No Hit Wonders (1985-1991)", which shifted just over 2,700 copies in its first week of release back in September 2005. Meanwhile, the group's first video compilation, the DVD "Anthrology: No Hit Wonders (1985-1991) The Videos" (both on Island/UMe), sold less than 950 units in its initial week of release, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Similarly, the band's live CD and DVD packages, "Alive 2 (2005)" (on Sanctuary Records), which document the group's summer 2005 reunion tour, opened with less than 1,100 and 1,700 copies, respectively.

they only asked him back to make it a legit reunion. i'm bummed, i like classic anthrax better than bush-era, i was looking forward to hearing a new record with belladonna. but, i do enjoy bush and think they can still make killer records. if bush doesn't come back, who knows what the future of anthrax will be (if there will be one at all). by the way - i like all the bush albums, but 'we've come for you all' was really over-rated, IMHO.

Even though I love the Bush era of your band, I hope John tells you to go piss up a fucking rope when you beg him to come back. You can put any spin on it you want, but you guys hung him out to dry, period. Shame on both of you. Regards,

You had it fucking coming all along - I just hope John Bush has the pride and balls to tell you to go FUCK yourself when you start begging him to come back. This shit is called 'Karma' you backstabbing motherfucker: you fuck with other people (first Joey, then John) you're eventually gonna get fucked yourself!
Please just go ahead and die, Anthrax - it's way overdue already. And save yourselves the pitiful embarrasment of releasing another half-assed record.

...close to no one wants to see the wcfya lineup... you go back to that lineup (caggiano, bush) and you look like hypocrites... rob bad-mouthed the reunion, bush obviously got upset... congratulations, you're going back to playing bingo halls...
i was at the nokia show... got to see soundcheck and do the meet-and-greet... can the blabbers here guess which two guys were the least friendliest?
i'm a lonnnnnnng-time fan of 'thrax - and i liked the lineup with john, too, don't get me wrong - but this is just a slap in the face to the fans... now you've proven that the reunion was strictly a cash-in... we wanted a new cd with joey, but all we got is ANOTHER live disc and ANOTHER greatest hits collection, cd & dvd... with no new music with the 'classic' lineup... even VH knows to record new music when they reunite with a singer...

...for the lack of a tour, i'm sure joey didn't just say, 'hmmm... an opportunity to go on the road and make some money... well, let's see, i don't feel like it...'
either joey wasn't getting a fair/equal cut, or it became the 'scott and charlie show' calling the shots, which can wear thin if you're trying to foster a 'band' atmosphere...

This is what you get when you dump John Bush like a brick and think you'll live forever with Joey B. They should have treaded John much better by saying; 'hey we're gonna do a reunion tour for a couple of months, but we really want to go on with you after that....what's your opinion on this? '

If they don't get John Bush and Rob Caggiano back they should simply break up and move on. However, I agree with some of the other posts on here......I hope John and Rob tell them to go fuck themselves!! That's exactly what these assholes deserve for doing what they did. The way they handled this reunion from the beginning was a complete fucking insult to the fans but more imortantly....to John Bush and Rob Caggiano!! So fuck em!!

I was hoping to see them with the reunion line up and hear a new album from them. I got into Anthrax as a kid back in the late 80's. I lost interest when Bush joined. I will admit they have some cool tunes but I just did not get it.
I hate to say it. I don't see them going much further now. They did make some movement with the last Bush era album, and seemed to really jump far with the reunion, but I can't see this working now. Who the hell will they get? I can't see it being anything great. I might be wrong, but I don't think so.

However, joey is a dumbass for for not wanting a good tour or to keep this going. Where was his career the last 15 years? go ahead and count spitz out as well.

I was never really a Bush era fan ( I find his voice and the music too generic) so I can't say that interests me. I did however meets Joey Belladonna while he was supporting WASP and he seemed like a really down to earth, friendly guy. I haven't met Scott Ian, but from hearing the evidence I would imagine Joey probably couldn't take working with Scott and Charley anymore.

OK. I am allowed to say this now. I have known about this for quite some time. A good friend of mine went to see Skid Row/Kings X this past November in Chicago. Charlie Benante was at the show. My friend has been an Anthrax fan since the early 80s, and even though he has met Charlie many times before, he decided he woudl go up and talk to him again. THey started talking, and an issue came up about John/Joey. My friend told Charlie that he prefers John over Joey, and Charlie said he does as well, and then he started talking about shit he doesn't like about Joey. I knew that Joeys days in Anthrax were over for a third time.

I agree with the majority here.........I liked the John Bush era, too. Not as much as the Belladonna era, but it had its moments. But I hope Bush tells them to go stick it.
I also noticed that Danny Spitz is not mentioned at all. I'm guessing he's out of the band, too.

None of this suprises me . Scott will do anything for the almighty dollar including turning his back on fans about every 4 or 5 years. I mean he acts so anti but in fact he is a total sellout. I truly hope John Bush does not go back to Thrax. I can't see Thrax out doing SOUND OF WHITE NOISE anyhow. Last 5 cd's they kept putting in mid tempo songs to NO avail. Go on and march with your Saints John and screw this band and esp Scott Ian.

I've boycotted the band since the reunion. I thought Bush got bushwacked (LOL), a total slap in the face. I haven't listened to Belladonna-sung tunes in that time, either. I've been a fan since '85, but it was clear that Bush was THE MAN for them.
The fan base got loads of confusion 2 years ago. What do we think now?
I'd love to see Bush back in the band, but I can hardly blame him if he tells Scott 'n' Charlie to stick it. Same with Caggiano.
Lastly, I loved the comment above aboot getting Gary Cherone. That's priceless, nice one there.

They had just released a Live album/DVD with Bush and then Joey comes back and quickers than you can say, "Caught in a Mosh" they had another live album/DVD. What a fiasco this has turned into. Scott Ian said that Anthrax were dead if the reunion didn`t happen...where does that leave them now? I know there are fanboi`s in here that think the Bush years were great ( and I enjoyed some of it, don`t get me wrong ) but the truth is Joe Pulbic didn`t give a shit for Anthrax after Joey left and the albums weren`t selling. If they get Bush back now I doubt they`ll sell any better than they were before and if the man has any integrity he`ll tell them to fuck off anyway.
Probably time for Scott and Charlie to let it lie and try something new...

Does nobody remember this item from a few days back: "ANTHRAX Members To Jam With WHITFIELD CRANE In New York City - Jan. 17, 2007 [...] In other news, Scott Ian and ANTHRAX bassist Frank Bello will jam with Whitfield Crane (ANOTHER ANIMAL, LIFE OF AGONY, UGLY KID JOE) Thursday night, January 25 at Scott's Retox club in New York City. So there you have it: tomorrow night will be your first change to see the all new Anthrax line-up, featuring Whitfield Crane on vocals! Also, already last year Benante was dissing Belladonna ("Look, Joey Belladonna, I swear, the guy hasn't changed at all, okay? For him, I swear, he's the type of person that the day he was fired from the band, and the day we all met up to do this reunion, it was like yesterday for him. He has not really progressed as some of us did, and… [pauses] It was a little bit of weirdness for me.") and saying he liked the Bush-era material better than the Belladonna-stuff and that the reunion was only done for the money ("And I just had a certain way, that this is the way I want it to be — you know, punk, thrash, that was my whole thing. I matured a bit as a songwriter, and those albums with John show a total progression. The last album that we did, which was 'We've Come for You All', was by far, for me, the best ANTHRAX record that I've ever done. It's bittersweet for me… [Pauses] Now I'm in this reunion tour mode, and it's successful. There's a bit of me that kind of wonders why it is so successful, and the last chapter of ANTHRAX wasn't as successful.")

Such a fuckin' shame, that was a good band you had once.

Ok, yes, without a doubt, please bring back John Bush. Is Joey Belladonna just a complete idiot? You have a chance to really kick metal in the ass with a new Anthrax album with one of Anthrax's stellar line-ups, and Joey Belladonna says "no"? What is with that? Oh well, John Bush was much more about being in a band than being Joey Belladonna. I think that's what counts. And, the Lesser of Two Evils is the bomb! Wow! Anyway, my point being is John Bush has been amazingly loyal to the Anthrax camp. Let's hope you guys return the favor. No pressure...

What a joke- maybe they can pull a KI$$ and have John Bush dress up as Joey Belladonna and hope no one notices.
See, this latet drama will cue the sad violin music and find Charlie and Scott crying, yet again, that no one takes them seriously. Well, how the hell CAN anyone take them seriously when the band lineup seems to shift every 6 months, and it's a constant back & forth-
Joey out, John in. Dan out, Rob in. Frank out, Frank in. Rob out, Rob in. John out, Joey in. Ace out, Vinnie in. Vinnie out, Mark in. Mark out, Bruce in. Bruce out, Ace in. Ace out, Tommy in.
Whoops, got confused there w/ which band I was talking about. But you can see how that could happen.

ANTHRAX Guitarist Says He Has To Remain Vague Regarding Reasons For Reunion - Mar. 16, 2006
ANTHRAX guitarist Scott Ian has elaborated on his previous claim that the band could not have continued without a reunion of their "classic" lineup — featuring singer Joey Belladonna and guitarist Dan Spitz. Explaining that "fucked-up contracts" are the reason he cannot be more specific regarding the exact reasons behind the group's decision to rejoin forces with Belladonna and Spitz, Ian said, "That's why I can't just answer a question. That's why I have to remain vague. Sorry, my ego just isn't that big. I don't need to hear myself speak. I can keep my mouth shut, especially when our lives in this business are on the line. [In a recent interview with Germany's Rock Hard magazine] John [Bush, ex-ANTHRAX singer] couldn't answer straight either [regarding the reasons for the reunion of the band's classic lineup]. You have to understand that sadly this is a business and for me to be specific would cause unbelievable damage to this band and all its individual members. We'd be done. Buried under a mountain of litigious bullshit and we wouldn't be able to dig ourselves out and continue this time. We barely made it out alive after 'Volume 8'. It would probably be easier for me to say nothing but I feel you [the ANTHRAX fans] deserve the respect you've earned from us. They may not be the answers you want but at least I'm here [to answer your questions]. I'm in the CDC [the official ANTHRAX fan club] all the time. I don't see anyone else being so proactive. This is my life and if you think for one second I take any of this for granted you are dead wrong.
"Over the next few months we expect the air to clear for us. Until that happens, mum is the word."
ANTHRAX are expected to begin work on a new studio album with Belladonna and Spitz later in the year.

I was always against this reunion. It didn't even last long enough for a record with Belladonna so we should be grateful for that.
If they come back without Bush its over. Fans are already pissed and we won't accept someone other than John. If John comes back then that means that Scott and Charlie must be really good dudes for him to come back after the way things went down.
I doubt he'd come back because he needs money because apparently lack of money is what started all this.

The new songs werent as exciting live, and joey is a better frontman. Anyone who has met Joey would probably agree that he is the most approachable member. Shame it didnt work out. " I was hoping to see them with the reunion line up and hear a new album from them.

Stopped listening to them when they pushed Bush and Caggiano out for this cash in reunion to get Sharon Osbourne to let them play ozzfest. Before this Charlie and Scott were always complaining they could not get to play festivals anymore. Well guys, you got your wish and sold your souls. So much for musical integrity!

After reading this posting this could be the end for Anthrax. If they do another record, they should do one with John Bush. He is, and has always been one of the best Metal vocalists of all time.
I wouldn't say that Anthrax just god rid of John Bush. They kind of put his era on the backburner for awhile so the Among The Living/Spreading The Disease line-up could do a reunion tour, or possibly an album. Looks like the reunion album is not going to happen now.
Sound Of White Noise, Stomp 442, Volume 8, We've Come For You All, and The Greater Of Two Evils were all awesome albums. It's too bad the public did not pick up on some of them. Even though Sound Of White Noise did not do that bad, it could have sold more. Same with Stomp 442. Unfortunately, when Stomp 442 was released Heavy Music (Metal and Hard Rock) was in a slump. The masses were buying shitty music from the Offspring, Green Day, Smashing Pumpkins, and Bush and ignoring great releases like Stomp 442 from Anthrax, Burn My Eyes from Machine Head, Demanufacture from Fear Factory, and a couple of others out at that time.
Then there are the people who don't get the John Bush era Anthrax. These are the same people who sit there and go, "it's good, but it's not Anthrax."
The whole situation is frustrating. All eras of Anthrax rule. Even Fistful Of Metal is awesome. John Bush era Anthrax came out at the wrong time, and some just didn't get it. Anthrax's prime success was between 1987 and 1992. Especially in 1991 when they did the "Bring The Noise" collaboration. Persistence Of Time was an awesome album too.
Anthrax could be over. They had their time, and when they still should have had their time Heavy Music was down. Scott Ian is a great Guitarist, and Charlie Benante is a great drummer. They should definitely carry on playing music. John Bush will probably do another Armored Saint album, and if he goes back to jam with Anthrax then great. Even if Bush goes back to Anthrax, they are not going to sell that many albums, and by the time they put new music out the interest level will not be there. We've Come For You All was a great album, and a great comeback but the response was not good in terms of success. Anthrax is too real to sell tons of records anymore. Charlie Benante and Scott Ian should start a new balls-out Heavy band with their classic Metal, modern Metal, and extremely Heavy influences. Leave the Rap and Metal thing alone, and just play some Heavy, straight-forward Metal.
Best wishes to Charlie, Scott, Frank, John, Dan, Rob Caggiano, and Joey Belladona.

Some of the users here are starting to sound like Metallica.
"Oh, what about John? You left him out to dry!" "I hope John tells you to fuck off based on principle." "They only reunited for money! I'm telling you!"
Here's a thought...who the fuck cares?
The reunion tour was a stupid idea, mostly because of its timing. Anthrax had just released their best album since "Sound Of White Noise" and was finally starting to get back on a roll, as it seemed. Then, out of left field, they can Bush and Caggiano in exchange for Belladonna and Spitz.
Bad move. Don't get me wrong, I prefer the older Anthrax records over their newer ones. But this isn't 1987 anymore, and Belladonna has completely lost his vocal, and Spitz fits in onstage with Anthrax just about as much as a three-legged monkey.
Seems like Scott wants to get back the Bush lineup. Is it kind of shitty on his part? Yeah, probably. But who the fuck are we to decide what John Bush "should" do based on principles? I'm a fan of Anthrax because of the music they make, period. Not because of anything that they do in their daily lives, or their band relations. I couldn't care less...what matters is what happens on their records, and if they can get the Bush lineup back together for another killer record like their last one, I'll be the first one in line to buy it.

It has been so easy to see through Anthrax for years. Or should I say Scott Ian with his pretending he cares about the fans while it's obvious he's trying to keep Anthrax going as long as he can to squeeze the last cent out of the name. Good! Hopefully Bush tells them to fuck themselves. Most fans think Bush sucked for Anthrax but the truth is Anthrax sucked for Bush. It not the vocals that lack on Bush era Anthrax, it's the music. Bush crushes on Greater of Two Evils.

Anthrax on the We 've Come For You All tour were great they made their old stuff faster and breathed new life into them and they were loud, damn loud. I did not want this gig to end They were tight and this to me reflected on the Greater Of Two Evils. When they toured in 2005 with Spitz & Belladonna they were a differnt band, slower & just getting over the line, moderately paced. I spent half the show at the bar waiting for it to finish. So i hope they bring bacik Bush and kill it once again

WCFYA was far and wide their worst album of new material ever. The Greater of Two Evils was an absolute car wreck, purely unlistenable. Bush is about as generic of a singer as you can get. The guy is also a colossal prick, which shows why he got along so great with Scott to begin with. Like others have posted, Scott acts like he's too good for the room, blows right by his fans while being escorted by security guards. Bush badmouthed the opening act (Lacuna Coil) when I last saw them with Bush about 5 years ago. I vowed right there and then to boycott the Bush era for good. The truth of the matter is that they were probably trying to screw Joey on the contract for touring like they did years ago when there was supposed to be both Bush and Belladonna singing. This band is done, goodbye and good riddance to Scott and Charlie. You have to wonder also why Frank left his uncle behind and had to go to another band. Maybe he can get in with Megadeth when Dave does the inevitable and drops Lomenzo.

People i feel have missed the point - the reunion was for them as much as anyone else. At the end of the day it's their musical decision and wether you thought it was right or wrong is neither here nor there. I think this is another case of everyone is a critic.

I knew better than to think that Joey would make a new record with Anthrax. I also think that John Bush should never take a back seat to a new or old Anthrax singer!!! Who agrees?

i would of loved to have heard a new joey/anthrax album..but what now...if i was bush i would tell them f**k off if they asked me back...i think 'thrax should audition a good 1000 singers and pick a good in between vocalist that would suite the old and new stuff..bet some t.v. producer will pick up on ths and offer 'thrax $1,000,000 for reallity show.

3 times across "western" Canada, but not even one close stop near Toronto. I mean its only the biggest city in Canada, the one reunion I waited years to see and now theres no chance of it. Just fold the fucking name, let Spitz go back to his watches, Bello can go back to Helmet, and you can give the Nuge and Baz a call , mabye that crappy Damnocracy band will hold a future for ya cause as much as i hate to say it, Anthrax is finished.

Break Up. I'm sure the reunion was not a big money maker it was just for marketing Anthrax a little and it just came to a grinding hault. Now they get John back. Does he want to??? I wouldn't if I was him.

"...the two-CD retrospective "Anthrology: No Hit Wonders (1985-1991)", which shifted just over 2,700 copies in its first week of release back in September 2005. Meanwhile, the group's first video compilation, the DVD "Anthrology: No Hit Wonders (1985-1991) The Videos" (both on Island/UMe), sold less than 950 units in its initial week of release, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Similarly, the band's live CD and DVD packages, "Alive 2 (2005)" (on Sanctuary Records), which document the group's summer 2005 reunion tour, opened with less than 1,100 and 1,700 copies, respectively."
paltry numbers for guys who abandoned a lineup they preferred (at least that was the admission of the band's primary songwriter, Charlie).
there ya go. it's a job for these guys and they got bills to pay and the reunion didn't quite live up to their wildest fiscal dreams.
cheers.

Dear Scott, Charlie and Frank.
Back in the day, Anthrax influenced me by turning me on to comics and Stephen King while at the same time banging my head. Still enjoy listening and now working out to Anthrax to this day. I enjoy both eras/vocalist and both had their fair share of awesome tunes that still get me going. Anthrax have made their mark in thrash metal history and will always be there for true metal fans.
All I have to say is that Scott, Charlie and Frank should consider just closing this chapter in their musical careers then either go off together and start a new band or just take a break and seperate. They have the talent and are no where close to the age where they should pack it in. Maybe find a killer new vocalist and shred again under a new name. Just consider the option of no longer flogging the horse named Anthrax before the legacy becomes a farce.
Respectfully,
A Lifelong 'Thrax Fan
P.S. Scott enjoyed you on the Supergroup show and it felt like I got to know one of my metal heroes. You came across as the most "real" person on that show.

At least there is one positive thing on this whole reunion money-making-touring-releasing-boring-live-cd/dvd-shit:
Joey quit. And that is by far the most honest thing he could do and I respect him for that. I loved Anthrax back in the days and it took me quiet a while to accept Bush as their new singer, but from there on it was clear to me that he is actually the better singer!
In Germany the reunion-thing wasn't received very well. Everyone wanted Bush back. I personally think that Anthrax fooled their fans and took them to much for granted.
Now it will be very interesting to see how Scott & Charlie sell off this one! "Oh, Belladonna talked us into the reunion. Bush was the better singer anyway blablabla..."
How about being honest?!
Give half the money you earned with this stupid idea and ripped off of your fans to BUSH! That's the least you can do to say sorry.

these guys may have burned all of their bridges. They recorded some great CDs with John Bush (in fact, I think they're all great CDs), but they did burn John and now they seem to be stuck. Please, please don't try it with another singer. Get John back or start another completely different band, please.

Especially Scott needs to forget about pride and holding on to all the money (a lot of us know what is really going on). It's always the "other guys fault" with all the "great opportunity" before him he still decides to leave. Who are Anthrax anyway? ..... those with the rights (money) to Anthrax. I guess Joey and Jhon got tierd and hungry playing for minimum wage. The remaining members (those that consider themselves so) need to beg for forgiveness and offer, on paper a generous sum to Neil for a real Anthrax record to be made - something I haven't heard since Among the Living. As things stand now Anthrax are among the dead, and should stay dead if they are not willing to support their bandmates. They need to realize that the man they choose to join Anthrax is a bonafide memeber of the band. Until then, Scott not Man enough needs to shut up! NFL!
