METALLICA: Audio Sample Of 'The Ecstasy Of Gold' Posted Online
- Jan. 26, 2007
|
|
A one-minute audio clip of METALLICA's version of "The Ecstasy of Gold", the song from the classic film "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" which has been opening METALLICA live shows since 1983, has been posted online at this location. METALLICA's cover will be released on February 20 via Sony Classical as part of a tribute to composer Ennio Morricone, also featuring some of the greatest names from the worlds of contemporary pop, rock, jazz, and classical music. Conceived and produced by Luigi Caiola, who worked on the maestro's monumental retrospective, io, Ennio Morricone, in 2003, "We All Love Ennio Morricone" brings together seventeen exquisite interpretations — most of them newly recorded especially for this collection — of Morricone's best-loved film scores and other musical pieces showcasing the extraordinary range of the composer's influences and sensibilities. Commenting on the new CD, Morricone said, "You realize that you have composed important music when someone, somewhere is playing it. I am however astonished, obviously in a good way, that famous artists from the musical world have paid tribute to me by participating in the project, 'We All Love Ennio Morricone', that brings together my most well-known compositions in different versions and fascinating interpretations thanks to the different musical origins of the various artists. My thanks to everyone, I am deeply honored." "Not only the film industry, but the music industry at large, are deeply indebted to this phenomenal composer whose expressivity embraces so many genres with such integrity and creativity," said Renee Fleming. "The evocative nature of his work dramatically enhances the visual image and resonates in our deepest emotions." "I have been inspired by Morricone's raw unbridled emotion, especially in his western scores," said James Hetfield of METALLICA. "As a band, we have used his moving 'Ecstasy of Gold' piece as an intro to our performances since 1983." In addition to three orchestral tracks — "Gabriel's Oboe", "The Tropical Variation" and "Cinema Paradiso" — performed by Ennio Morricone, the composer has created transitional pieces for "We All Love Ennio Morricone" to seamlessly connect the individual tracks into a continuously flowing listening experience. "We All Love Ennio Morricone" caps a series of unprecedented honors for the 78-year-old composer, who will receive an Honorary Academy Award at the 79th Academy Awards presentation on February 25, 2007, in Los Angeles "for his magnificent and multifaceted contributions to the art of film music." Morricone has been nominated for five Academy Award Best Original Score nominations — "Days of Heaven" (1978), "The Mission" (1986), "The Untouchables" (1987), "Bugsy" (1991) and "Malèna" (2000). "Receiving an Oscar almost seems like too much, but I can't hide the fact that I'm very happy," said Morricone. "We All Love Ennio Morricone" (view cover here) track listing: 01. I Knew I Loved You - CELINE DION 02. The Good, The Bad and The Ugly - QUINCY JONES featuring HERBIE HANCOCK 03. Once Upon a Time in the West - BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN 04. Conradiana - ANDREA BOCELLI 05. The Ecstasy of Gold - METALLICA 06. Malèna - YO-YO MA 07. Come Sail Away - RENÉE FLEMING 08. Gabriel's Oboe - ENNIO MORRICONE 09. Conmigo - DANIELA MERCURY featuring EUMIR DEODATO 10. La Luz Prodigiosa - DULCE PONTES 11. Love Affair - CHRIS BOTTI 12. Je Changerais d'Avis - VANESSA AND THE O'S 13. Lost Boys Calling - ROGER WATERS 14. The Tropical Variation - ENNIO MORRICONE 15. Morricone is the God of film scores. No one beats him. The whole bombastic orchestra and dark choir mix is getting repetitive, and just throwing a compilation and call it a soundtrack is downright lame. Ennio's music remains good even after all these years, and none of the soundtracks sound the same like the previous one. Pure genious. This is a very nice way of celebrating Ennio Morricone's art.
And yes Metallica did an amazing job there!

Good God man. What happened to my old friends Metallica? The one's I used to show up at the arena at 7 AM for? Geez fellas, you're making it hard not to make fun of you. Thank you for my high school years but now I literally have ZERO interest in hearing a new album from you. My allegience is with Morbid Angel, Gojira and SKinless. Thank you, Come again.

I've heard my share of Metallica bashing and just assorted bullshit and some of it justified (St.Anger) but I think you've taken the cake as one of the most ridiculous people to ever post here.
It's fine to think Metallica, sold out,it's just a term and looking at the big picture a rather ridiculous one at that because they owe none of anything other than a great album and our views are all different so nobody can say for sure what's great and not great and call it a concrete fact.
It's fine to ridicule them Napster and so on but THIS?
Are you out of your fucking mind? Do you not realize that one of the main reasons Metallica started using this song as a show opener was because of the influence this great artist had on Metallica most notably James and Cliff.
I take it you didn't take but a minute to listen and make a real decision this song did you?
You didn't bother to look and decided to go with the average Metallica Basher and decide this cover sucked by default?
If you were a Metallica fan of any sort and didn't hear the original version of this song at any gigs you may have attended I question you because it's been done since Day 1 take away some dates in the late 90's and always since then.
It's not cool to bash without listening first without sounding like a total assclown.
Try it sometime.

THEY RAN OUT OF MUSTAINE RIFFS (He was credited on what like...six songs from only the first TWO albums)

For certain, I did not mention the term "sold out". I too have watched people thrash MEtallica for the last 8 to 10 years and with my own reticence, I have remained silent. My point is that, in continuance with St ANger and the REload debacles, they do an album with Celine Dion on it. Call me unsophisticated for not having a clue who the musical score is directed by, but I know good music and this ain't what I'm looking for. All you cheddarheads line up and pay $65 for an arena seat and I'll be on the floor at a Cattle Decapitation show. Good day, please leave a tip.

They did ONE song which had absolutely ZERO to do with Celine Dion to contribute to this and yet you think it sucks because it has Celine Dion on songs Metallica did not even look at.
Yes,I will not argue that some bashers have valid points as StygianKing #1 stated above.
I'm hoping to get my hands on the full version of Metallica's cover Of Ecstacy of Gold because it sounds pretty damn awesome. As for Load and ReLoad they are what they are as is St.Anger but those albums have NOTHING to do with this at all so why bring them up?
It's just Metallica doing what they feel is the proper way to pay homage to a man that many consider to be the greatest composer of Classical Music EVER in Ennio Morricone what Metallica did for the song they covered had nothing to do with any other artist on the bill but METALLICA themselves.
In closing,I don't think you were being "unsophisticated" but rather ignorant for not knowing the facts before spouting off about something you know nothing about.

The majority of you are too young to have been in a smoke filled club, holding a bud can waiting for these guys to hit the stage. The lights would dim and this “anthem,” because that’s what it has become, came blaring over the PA. This is definitely a moving piece of music and my only question is….What took so long for them to put their own spin on it? The Ecstasy of Gold moved me so much that I actually used it as the intro when I got married. REST IN PEACE CLIFFORD LEE BURTON!

Anyone ever hear Ennio Morricone's score from the Jack Nicholson movie "Wolf"? It's pretty eerie. It's a good movie too, definately recommended.
PS - On the whole Lars' trash can sound, if anyone remembers that during the recording of St. Anger, Metallica did those Ramones covers and the drums didn't sound like trash cans on those cover songs. They aren't going to do those kinds of things when they re-record someone else's work. Idiots.

Metallica playing, dare I say, metal again? Sounded like it to me, and gives me some hope for the new album. Of course I've thought that same thing so many times over so many years... and ended up getting burned. And unfortunately it sounded like James still has his whiny vocals which is a total disappointment. The original Hetfield voice (first 5 albums, especially the later ones) is, in my opinion, the best metal vocals ever.

No, my friend. They have successfully turned their band into a wannabe mainstream but not quite catchy enough to stay relevant in Top 40 music.
If they wanted to go out the way they've been going the past over a decade they would have killed themselves after the black album came out, then all the idiot "Journalists" would have said they were legends who died before their peak of talent; which is opposite of what has happened.

I always enjoy reading Metallica threads. Their so funny!
In my eyes Metallica havent made a killer tune since Justice. Sad But True sounds cool live but that's about it. Listened to Load twice and since then I have forgotten about 'em and moved on with my musical interests. I think some of you should do the same.
I must admit to having a little spark of intrigue about this new album of theirs. Why? Well Bob Rock has dissapeared which is a prime reason. I also believe they can make another great album, I am sure it's in them to do so. After watching that film of theirs it's plain to see the Hetfield has an awful lot of demons. Yes he's a multi millionaire but if he could channel those demons into something creative then perhaps it could be a great album. Who knows? Maybe they can turn it all around? It's their last chance.

This is always the hot topic. Did Metallica sell out? Probably, but you don't keep making music for money when you have enough to buy jets and mansions. Did Metallica go soft? Yeah. Listen to the first 4 albums, then everything after than. Does Metallica suck? Matter of opinion... But Metallica meant something to everyone posting, otherwise this crap wouldn't be brought up everytime they are mentioned.
Here it is boys and girls, and demons. You don't have to like or hate Metallica. You don't have to buy their albums. You can beat a dead horse, but at some point, you need to realize, you are only beating that dead horse because its just there. Move along. To tell you the truth, I can't wait for the new album. It might suck, but it's up to me to judge that. I really could give a rats ass what anyone else thinks. It's my $12.95, or whatever it will cost here in the U.S.A. But it's mine to loose if I want.
That's all folks.

Of course I thought St. Anger was gonna be better after seeing the live thing on Mtv and we all know how that went. Did someone say Bob Rock is out? That would be a good start! But Rick Rubin is a douche too. They need Terry Date, or better yet, Vinnie Paul, record it down in Texas! Rebel Meets Rebel sounds great and is nice and loud, compared to other cds on the same stereo at the same volume, it's just louder and more up front. Same with Reinventing.. I guess I just want to hear new Metallica out of morbid curiosity. Speaking of Morbid,
"And Morbid Angel is absolutely worthless as well. I once had the unfortunate experience of sitting through one of their sets....besides having my hearing ruined for the whole night because the lead guitarist had his amps at maximum, their music was pretty much worthless, boring, stereotypical metal. Sucked....major." AAAHHHH, Was the metal too loud for yuur wittle ears? Pussy! Morbid Angel OWNS your weeping MANGINA!!!!!!!!

Why not have some harmony guitars on there?? That song just BEGS for guitar harmonies, but they just have the one playing the melody. It seems they have abandoned guitar harmonies, which is too bad because it was one of the things that made them so cool back in the day. No heavy chugging either. Why can't they have heavy guitars anymore?? Their rhythm guitar sound has been atrocious since Load. Boost the lows and highs and cut the mids! Let's get some air flowin' here people.

I already committed suicide by bareback tagteaming your Mom and sister(I would have said girlfriend but come on now,) in their herpsyphlaids infected rectums. At least I got a free meal by cutting some back fat off the bitches. What's your problem with Morbid anyway, did Pete not sign your autograph book or something. They always sounded sick when I saw them. You must be some bent house sound guy who doesn't know how to put on a death metal band, or some half ass born again who gets butthurt anytime someone points out the fraud that is your precious Jebus Cristal. And you probably never buy concert tickets in the first place, you just line up to suck a roadies pole for a backstage pass. Your sister told me between gags. Curtis is spelled with a C, and you're a pole smoker.

Yes, "'tallica" would be really proud of their current fanbase if they'd take the time to read some of these entries here.
As a longtime admirer (a long time ago) of the band I'm almost glad they lost me along the way, considering the unbelievable asininity of many current "'tallica" fanboys.
It would be a good move by Mr. Krgin to ban those sorry anti-Semitic asses. It's almost a pity that new posters are allowed again on Blabbermouth.
Oh yes, and I have to quote this one:
"i like all the documented sources you list there. glad you know exactly what they were thinking when they changed their style. did james whisper this all into your ear at a concert? since you say it, it must be true right?"
Look junior, I got into Metallica in 1986. That's right, almost 21 years ago. You can believe me that I read and listened to countless interviews with James & Co. since the release of Master Of Puppets.
StygianKING#1 is right on the money and his points are valid. If you can't remember Lars Ulrich blabbering about the stripped down approach on the black album or his Oasis influences back in the Load era because you still shat your pants back then, this doesn't mean others can not remember those statements.
These guys lost it and it's a pity that Jason Newsted didn't quit much earlier in order to concentrate on the criminally overlooked Voivod.
Now playing: Opeth - Ghost Reveries. "'tallica" who?

Have to agree, this sounds really good. Heftfields vocals remains still to be heard, those small sections give hope :) Yeah, this brings the new Metallica album to my list of albums to get year 2007.

Well that clip was completely pointless, I mean it last about 3 bloody seconds.
I sure hope Metallica bring something amazing out to redeem themselves from Stanger Wanger.

you can't say metallica's old stuff was killer and bitch like this on every thread. they've made enough of some of the best music ever. if they produce anything more that compares to the old stuff it will be a bonus. anyways a lot of the newer stuff doesn't completely suck, it just sucks in comparison.

metallica is not a sinking ship. they are doing their job and having fun doing it. they haven't sold out, lost their way, or any of the bullshit things some of you say. i think it's pretty fucking simple...if you don't like metallica then why in the fuck are you posting? are you really that fucking bored?
the cover is badass. metallica sounds more united and im hoping the new album will be the same.
p.s. blabbermouth, you guys suck at fixing the abusive bullshit you are suppose to on here. if nothing else take the goddamn comments completely off of here so fans don't have to see any of dumbshit everyday

That sounded pretty damn awesome. Bring on the new album.
Oh btw, if you guys are as tired of reading same old anti-metallica comments, you can just ignore those teens. Just let them listen to their death metal and think they're cool for doing so. Ignoring them burns them alive inside. :)

This one is The Good!
"A one-minute audio clip of METALLICA's version of "The Ecstasy of Gold.......has been posted online at this location."
I don't imagine anyone will bother with a one minute audio clip when the entire song is freely available all over the net.
That said - I like it and, that is all that matters. Fuck yeah!
