NINE INCH NAILS To Film 'Survivalism' Video Next Week - Jan. 31, 2007
NINE INCH NAILS is scheduled to film a video for the new track entitled "Survivalism" beginning Monday, February 5 in the Los Angeles area. The song comes off the group's new album, "Year Zero", which is slated for an April release.

In a recent interview with England's Kerrang! magazine, NINE INCH NAILS mainman Trent Reznor described the upcoming CD as "a collage of sound type of thing, not heavy in a metal guitar kind of way." He added, "With this record I feel a lot less concerned about what people think about it — especially the dying record industry. I couldn't care less about that right now." Reznor also revealed that the new effort is a concept album and "part of a bigger picture of a number of things I'm working on. Essentially I wrote the soundtrack to a movie that doesn't exist."

Reznor said that most of the album was recorded "in hotel rooms around the world on laptops," with very few musicians beside himself and "maybe some surprise vocalists that pop up here and there."

When asked why the new record took less than two years to arrive when the last one took six, Reznor said, "I'm probably as surprised as some fans are (laughs). But really it's just a matter of discipline. When I was on the last tour, to keep myself busy I was just really hunkered down and was working on music the whole time, so this kept me in a creative mode and when I finished the tour I felt like I wasn't tired and wanted to keep at it."

NINE INCH NAILS will release a DVD called "Beside You In Time" on February 27. The disc documents the band's tour in support of "With Teeth".

I like NIN and I wish I had half the musical talent Trent Reznor has in his middle finger.

Ripping off people doesn't necessarily denote no musical talent. I don't think you would argue that Led Zepplein had no musical talent just because most of their songs were ripped and uncredited by old blues musicians.

Lazy remark. Reznot doesn't rip anyone off - unlike Kreator and their bargain basement Slayer.

I love NIN and With Teeth was a surprisingly great record, although it's clearly a huge departure from their earlier work, and I would kill for something closer to their older sound. Usually that shit doesn't matter but I think Reznor made some of his best stuff last decade.

I agree with mikeheffner, with teeth was a good album, more melody I think. The last two albums a a lot different from The donward spiral, but I think The fragile abnd with teeth are better in some kind of way. Reznor have said recently he thinks the next album (Year zero) is the best album he've ever made, So I'm curious about that =)

with the last "album"....

nin died after the fragile.
we all know it.

the only people still hanging on to "NIN" are the obessive fans that wanna know the colour of his undies.

this album will probably be another attempt to fuel reznor's retirement fund with pathetic rock pop, that is badly mixed and composition that just plain sucks.

why won't this loser give up and acutually come through on his words and kill himself.

it ll be a lot more interesting than the next album.

..expand their minds past Slayer, and KREATOR by the way kicks Slayers teeth in. I will remind you that Slayer was a puck band before they were Slayer. KREATOR has always been METAL and has always been a hell of alot better then slayer!

I cant say that I liked WITH TEETH at first, then I listened to it a few more times and it grew on me. Its not suppost to me a rehash of previous works like all of slayers disc(same shit, different album..blah blah blah) Musicians who can diversify themselfs are truely muisicans.

If you pay more the an inch of attention to music outside of your little boxes, you will realize that everything comes from something before it. What you hear, more then likely, had already been played before by someone else.

Just like EDIETS, this video has also been cancelled.

I work for a talent manager in Hollywood, and one of my jobs is to look at online casting calls. I found this. This is a casting call for the video for the new NIN single, "Survivalism." (I've got a few comments on that title, but I'll save them.)

NINE INCH NAILS MUSIC "SURVIVALISM" VIDEO

Music Video

There is nudity in this project.

[BLACK GUY] male, middle-aged, African-American. Some facial hair/5 oclock shadow. Dispondant. A beaten, resigned face. Methodical. A drone.

[TOPLESS GIRL AT MIRROR] female, 20's to 30's, ethnic, Asian, African-American, East Indian, Hispanic. Sexy natural. She SHOULD be sexy and appealing in a non made-up way. No implants, not blonde, not a tattooed / pierced 'rock' girl. Not overdone. More 'Babel' - less rock video. Must be comfortable with upper frontal nudity which will be shown in video.

[RIOT POLICE (8)] males, Caucasian 20 - 45 years old. Tough, fit, no-nonsense, crowd control cops.

[MAN WATCHING TV] male, 20's to 40's; Latino or mixed ethnic race; lower class; basically light brown in color, definitely not caucasian

[WOMAN WATCHING TV] female, 20's to 40's; Latino or mixed ethnic race; lower class; basically light brown in color, definitely not caucasian

[SECURITY GUY] male, Caucasian, late 30's, early 40's, bad guy. Think Hugo Weaving, the matrix lead villain that keeps saying 'Mr. Anderson' or any smooth, intelligent, mastermind bad guy villian from a James Bond or Jackie Chan movie.

[GAY GUY IN BED - CAUCASIAN] young, 18 to early 20's, sexy and attractive.

[GAY GUY IN BED - MUSLIM] young, 18 to early 20's, sexy and attractive, bearded would be nice.

[DRUG USERS] males and females, Caucasian, age open. Burnout's, edgy drug users. Downtrodden. Skinny no-bra type for the women. Heroin-esque for all. Live in a rundown apartment or creepy basement.

Then I saw this...

There is no fucking way you can listen to Downward Spiral, The Fragile, Broken, & (to somewhat of a lesser extent) With Teeth and say that Trent fucking Reznor's talent ran out in 1989. If you honestly believe this then you have never listened to any NIN records after Pretty Hate Machine, or you are mentally bamboozled (retarded is such an ugly word).

"I see and hear everything for what it IS and not what it SOUNDS like."

What the F***?
I thought music was to be listened to?

"but most of the bullshit going downhill starts with the civilians who don't embrace a new direction"

if i don t like it, i won t listen to it. i think that s fair enough. and if i spend money on it i will make sure i don t like it. (as probably with most people...)

image and all the rest of the bull associated with bands is just there to market their new product to consumers.

people these days just seem to get caught in the cult of personaility, one of the best marketing tools ever invented.

sometimes it stops people from seeing the wood for the trees as they have built up a loyalty to a band.

Reznor has always shrouded himself in mystery. Perhaps why so many tend to think of him as this "demi god". he does it on purpose. he wants to sell you something. he needs the money for his coke habit.... oh yeah he s supposed to have given that up right?
bull...

Well done.
you think you are different but you are just another lemming.

(by the way out side the mainstream there are a billion new interesting and wonderful bands.
if you think music is dying you haven t looked properly yet)

not to mention i've looked outside the mainstream because in the mainstream, all the other bands i've listened to have begun to sell out. sell out as in do something completely 180 that their fan base is used to from them, or they're licensing their shit to tv commercials for fucking iPods or some shit. as a matter of fact, i barely watch tv anymore. i've found thousands of great (and occasional shitty bands) on mp3.com and myspace and shit. you're going to tell me i'm a consumerist for saying that. the fact is, there's always talent with people. when a band forms and that band gets their local notoriety for their band members and their personalities, the songs they write together, or how they come off, and how they sound live and in-studio on a demo recording or a cd pressing of their studio recordings, you listen for the talent. often i hear great potential, but the singer will suck or the singer will be great but the lyrics don't catch me on a visual or artistic basis. however, the same can go with a drummer (i've seen this in a local band before they kicked him out and asked me to record a 4 track demo for them), it can go with a guitarist, a bassist, a pianist... anybody in the band can suck and not put their fullest of potential talent to the foray and show their dynamics and whatnot. i even admit i'm not showing my fullest potential on my first album which is due not far from now (within the next 7 weeks) and there's a reason for me to do it this way.

and another good point you bring up for me to talk about. personality, people being caught up in it, marketing, so forth. everything connects to the ultimate question as to the ultimate answer. "how do we get these people to buy this?" "market to the main demographic we know will buy it in the first week it hits the shelves"

image, music videos, magazine covers, tv spots and interviews, in-store signings and Q&A events, as well as in-store advertising with flyers or posters. everything is a technique to reach out and say "we're awesome, listen to us, we'll prove it to you". if the artwork is not honest enough, nor is the music of the band if i can preview it and hear and see it all before the clerk rings it up, i'm more than likely not going to buy it at that moment in time, however, it is never ruled out in the future (unless i downright loathe what the band stands for).

i know i'm different in quite a large sense. you may need to re-read what i said which i believe you quoted me on last. i see everything for what it is and not what it sounds like. i made that as a reference mainly to each phase of nine inch nails from "the purest feeling" in 1988 as far up as to "with_teeth". some people say the fragile sucks. some people say with_teeth sucks. some people i've even heard in the most ridiculous timing that pretty hate machine sucked. you know why they say "it sucked" by chance? because they're more about the sound and how much synth is used or how much guitar is used, if it's heavy enough...

to me, i think you're attempting to cross-examine me with my ideal of what music should be originally in the first place to a consumer group (which trust me, there has been a catastrophic change to the idea of "real" and "good" music versus "heavy"). speaking of, i should elaborate. from memories' past, let's bring up some names that changed a lot of shit. elvis presley, the beatles, aerosmith, bob marley, jimi hendrix, black sabbath, van halen, metallica (in the early days to me), AC/DC, KISS, David Bowie... now let's get a little more closer to modern. Nirvana, Nine Inch Nails, Korn (the self-titled), N.W.A, Run DMC, Depeche Mode, Ministry, Skinny Puppy.. the lists could go on, but out of how many names i placed from as far back as the 50's to today, in terms of all the big names, underground or not.

the reason why i got into music in the first place was the sound. that was 1997. 10 years later, when i see lyrics and hear every sound and notes and velocities and shit, i "see" it, i don't just "hear" it. become a musician and in a year or two, when you can play just about any song on your instrument of choice, then come back and talk to me. until then, i will go live my life being very different from you, making "my" music and remembering the day someone on the internet called me a music lemming. maybe i'll write an angry song and call it lemming and hope to god i can crank the guitars all the way up and drive it enough so it can be played on a fucking radio station or MTV and cross my fingers i don't sell out... oh wait, i forgot. music is a science and an art at the same time, no less, it is life. making it to sell out to a corporate entity would be like me turning into you, or worse, doing music for ALL the wrong reasons (see: Boy Band + Female Superstar Phenomena).

so go pick up an instrument, learn it, and then learn the music you listen to, and play it back to me live for 45 minutes, and then tell me the lemming bullshit if you can't feel the emotional or visual aspects that were put into the song (pending the song has a true feeling to it and not some random "sick shit" to boost record sales) and then maybe... just maybe, we'll talk again or maybe even further in a debate between civilian and artist. and the fact i am almost done with my first cd should not play into this conversation, because an incomplete product is not vital enough to back shit up, but the hundreds of bands i am "in" with on myspace on a daily basis should be enough to get it through to your cerebral cortex that "music equals life" and that music is not "meant as an entertainment" as your comment title was put.

now to let this forum go back to the discussion it originally was on. nine inch nails, a cancelled video shoot, and people's thoughts, feelings, and reactions to said discussion, and opinions that an artist will rip someone else off to be successful in their career, and so forth... see a majority of the posts prior to the one i previously put before your diatribe.
