VAN HALEN: 'Best Of (1978-1984)' Gets New Release Date - Feb. 5, 2007
BLABBERMOUTH.NET can reveal that Rhino Records has pushed back the projected release date of VAN HALEN's "Best Of (1978-1984)", the first single-disc compilation exclusively spotlighting 1978-1984, the group's original David Lee Roth era, to March 27 from the previously announced March 13. The album, which coincides with VAN HALEN's March 2007 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, contains over an hour of remastered classics from the albums "Van Halen", "Van Halen II", "Women And Children First", "Fair Warning", "Diver Down", and "1984". Highlights include "Runnin' With The Devil", "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love", and "And The Cradle Rock". Also featured are "Everybody Wants Some", "So This Is Love" and "Oh, Pretty Woman". The CD booklet will contain rarely seen photos and liner notes.

"Best Of (1978-1984)" tentative track listing:

01. Runnin' With The Devil
02. Eruption
03. You Really Got Me

07. Somebody Get Me A Doctor
08. Beatuiful Girls
09. And The Cradle Will Rock

12. Unchained
13. So This Is Love?
14. Where Have All The Good Times Gone
15. Oh, Pretty Woman

18. Panama
19. Hot For Teacher

VAN HALEN released a statement last Friday (Feb. 2) saying David Lee Roth will come back to the band for a summer tour of North America. The 40-date trek will mark the first time since 1984 that Roth will perform with Eddie Van Halen and Alex Van Halen along with new bassist, Wolfgang Van Halen (Eddie's 15-year-old son). Eddie said in a statement, "I am very excited to get back to the core of what made VAN HALEN."

Same old songs burnt to a crisp by homogenized radio....and they call it "Best of..". Too bad... Van Halen stopped doing anything for it's fan base many years ago. Nothing this band has done in the last dozen yrs or so has been done for any other reason than a big payday. No new product with the old school line up.....no incredible stage performance that made a real fan feel like they mattered.....nothing but a half-assed effort of a tour in 2004 starring a drunk, could-give-shit-less guitar player and lack-luster tension-filled band in tow....all for an over-priced ticket to boot! With DLR's diminished abilities to recapture 1980, Eddie's off-the-wall business focus in Wolfgang as a viable member of VH and Alex on the neck brace, not to mention NO Michael Anthony???....this 2007 tour sounds about as appetizing as a Crisco sandwich. They'll make plenty of money with it but not from this fan....I'm done and can live on the memories of 1978-1981.

I agree, that would be really cool. I'd love to have some of that stuff. The "new" VH with a brain damaged DLR and a kid on the bass doesn't remotely interest me, especially not for the expected ticket prices. Unless of course this whole thing is meant as a self-parody, then it's brilliant!

Why would material that's been around for over 20 years need to be pushed back? Isn't it already completed work? Did Eddie have to change the album cover pattern of the red background with white and black stripes or something and nobody could photoshop it fast enough?

they have actually been jamming together since December. If you read some of the stories from Eddie he mentions jamming at his house with Dave, doing 14 or so songs and that they were sounding great and getting along even better. it could all be made up to gain monetary support for this tour but anyway, from one of the participants, they have been in the same room together already.

and i also agree, The Police reunion is where it's at. Stewart Copeland is a man among boys behind a kit.

I fall on the 'genemeansmoney' side of things, but was lucky enough to see them on the 1984 tour before DLR left (was fired, whatever). Great show then and, while I'm not kidding myself, should be now as well.

That being said, I can also say that I saw the Sammy/Dave tour and was floored at how Sammy blew DLR off the stage, hands down! Also caught the 'reunion' tour with Sammy a couple of years ago. All signs point to this being a disaster, but I'll give it a shot in the name of being a fan all these years. At worst...hey, it's $100 bucks...we're not talking Stones money, here.

Agree with all...Police is where it's at. Seen Sting a few times by himself. Jeez, last time he was playing some 16th century lute music (snooze) so I thought this might be possible. I'll be lining up as soon as they announce it.

Excellent analysis of the entire Van Halen soap opera!

jusme - While Eddie was mired in a perpetual state of drunkeness and Alex was writing alimony checks, Michael Anthony toured with Sammy Hagar. After all, he IS a musician. It's a well-known fact that Eddie doesn't like Sam, but then Eddie doesn't like anybody who has the backbone to defy him. Michael was dropped from the band simply because of his friendship with Sammy. As great as he once was, EVH is now a pitiful, miserable little man!

I am disapointed that Anthony is not in the lineup. But I have been waiting 22 years to see The Diamond One and The King Of Six Strings on stage together again. This should have happened back in 96, but this is better than anything they did with Hagar. The set will not contain any love songs from the Hagar era, thank God. it has been years since I've posted a message on this sight, and now I remember why.

To the guy who saw Roth and Hagar live, what concert were you watching? Not the one in Chicago where Hagar was almost booed off stage for making a statement regarding a turbin. His set was so lame, and he actually played the lame-ass video for "I can't drive 55" behind him when he played the song live. LAME.
Dave's set opened with Hot For Teacher, and the show was over after that, it was crazy as hell, and although more people could have been there, it was fun. Dave blew him away, period. So Sammy can play guitar, who cares. So he can add a witty solo to such killer songs like "Right Now" and "I can't stop Loving you"? The only problem they'll have is with the back up vocals, and that can be delt with.

This reunion is a fucking right of passage, and god damn it I'm gonna see it live. Of course this would have been better 10 years ago, but it's happening now, that's what matters. If you hate it, then go home and jam out your coppy of Balance, or V3 for that matter.

Van Halen went from the world's best bar band, to a band that crafted the art of a kick ass rock song in four minutes, to a band that tried to develop a semi-soico-policital consciousness through the art of borning, and predictable songs. How many of their titles had the word "love" in them? Who were they trying to be, a more polished version of Loverboy or Asia?

All I'm asking for is the most important 3/4's of Van Halen to make it through one summer of touring, and that would erase the parody in guise of itself that has been pretending to be Van Halen for the last 20 years.

and for the haters...
the worst song Dave ever did is better than the best song Sammy Hagar could dream of.

The Police are cool, but this is what I care about, and this will be the fucking tour of all tours, the tailgate to Hell and back.

These two views are great...dtvick has had it with the crap that Ed deals, his ego, drunken mindless decision making regarding what hardcore VH fans consider thier music treasure.......while deadsinktohell hits the nail through the board with " the reunion is a fuckin right of passage"...yes it is indeed and I want everyone that needs to see a great train wreck to go, do it, spend the cash and party your asses off! I did it in 77 when the band toured with Journey & Boston, then 78 when they opened for Sabbath and all solo shows that followed...it was magic, the Air-Roth drum riser leaps, blistering innovative EVH guitar solos, Alex without a neck brace and Michael Anthony carrying Roth through scaling high notes....throw in some naked teenage girl titty and a big joint....and those days can't be touched by a 2007 tour of the current line-up. However, while money can be made for retirement...the band has the right and should tour. The tension from VH fan base is understandable and deserved.....we embraced this band as our own property, we didn't want the breakup in 84, we wanted VH to have the longevity of Aerosmith.....always recording music, always touring and always kickass with the original line-up. Looks like those that are interested can at least get a glimmer of what once was....and for that be thankful.

Eddie called Sammy back in '84. Sammy had just come off of a multi platinum LP "Standing Hampton" he was questioning even giving up his solo career for VH, but decided to use most of the lyrics he wrote for his solo career and put them on most of the VH LP's. So don't say Sammy needed VH, I think VH and Eddie needed him, come on tell me one VH hit since Sammy left the band in '97, just one????? Can't cause thay weren't even a band anymore let alone a band with a lead singer.
SAMMY ROCKS and I wish to god he was still with Van Halen,
but Eddie screwed that up, that selfish bastard.
Now their without Michael Anthony and I'll tell you, Eddie and Alex hate DLR more than Eddie disagrees with Sammy. He won't last the Hall of Fame speech, just like he didn't last in the Grammy speech back in '97, the guy is a total FLAKE, I mean I loved VH back in the day, but times change and a flambouent camera hog isn't going to work with Eddie. That is why Sammy worked, Sammy just wanted to sing and enjoyed being part of the band, you can tell, if Eddie would get rid of the attitude and ask Sammy back, Sammy would jump at the chance. But we all got to remember they are getting old and set in there ways, so we'll all see what a bunch of 50 - 60 year old guys will do with the attitudes. I miss both eras of VH but just like trying to get back with an EX it just ain't gonna work.
