SMASHING PUMPKINS: New Album Title, Release Date Announced
- Feb. 7, 2007
|
|
|
The relaunched SMASHING PUMPKINS has set "Zeitgeist" as the title of its sixth album, due on July 7 (a Saturday). The news was broken this morning to fans that had been added by the band as a "friend" on MySpace.com.
Launch Radio Networks reported last week that it's looking more and more likely that the new SMASHING PUMPKINS lineup will not include original members James Iha on guitar and D'Arcy Wretzky on bass. PUMPKINS manager Paul Geary hinted at a different formation in comments he made to MTV.com, saying, "I've been involved with bands whose members can't stand each other, and over time they run out of dough and that's why they (reunite). But Billy's (Corgan, PUMPKINS leader) making a great record, and for the sake of a younger generation that he wants to turn on to the band's music, he is doing it with a band that will more faithfully re-create the old songs than ever before."
Geary did not say anything further about the new PUMPKINS lineup. The only confirmed original member besides Corgan is drummer Jimmy Chamberlin.
Corgan often expressed irritation in the past with Iha and Wretzky's playing, and it was rumored that he recorded all of their parts himself on much of the PUMPKINS' recorded output.
Geary, who also manages GODSMACK and was formerly the drummer for '80s rockers EXTREME, added that the PUMPKINS are not being reactivated for the money. He said, "They've had some amazingly big offers — some seven-figure ones to play certain shows — and Billy has passed on several because he didn't think it was the right thing for the band."
The PUMPKINS will play their first live dates since 2000 in early June at two German festivals.
Upcoming SMASHING PUMPKINS shows:
Jun. 02 - Rock Am Ring - Nürburgring, GER Jun. 03 - Rock Im Park - Nürnberg, GER Jun. 15 - Nova Rock - Nickelsdorf, AUT Jun. 17 - Greenfield - Interlaken, SWI
More tour dates are expected to be announced shortly.

I think Iha will be back. You can contest this all you want, but if he weren't in the band you would have seen at least one substantial news headline in the past 4 months about James being in some other note-worthy band project (America doesn't count) just to disprove that he is not holed-up in the studio with the Pumpkins. And Billy gets his rocks off surprising the public. This will be a great surprise to his fan base.
Paul Geary's quotes don't match up with the assumptions made from the editors. He says, "I've been involved with bands whose members can't stand each other, and over time they run out of dough and that's why they (reunite)." AND... "But Billy's making a great record, and for the sake of a younger generation that he wants to turn on to the band's music, he is doing it with a band that will more faithfully recreate the old songs than ever before."
What's to say that Iha doesn't want to make dough on a project that is fresh and profitable? Maybe he does need the dough, and maybe Billy wants his guitar styling to be incorporated in the new album. Obviously, if Iha showed *any* interest in joining Billy will push to make it happen. Iha was there since day one and people want to see him with the reunion. Make the fans happy and make millions. Seems simple to me.

Im with ya.....I really hope it resembles the first 3 albums n not the latter two, Corgan was a great songwriter during that period, I love all from Death to Aerosmith and like to think that as a musician I can appreciate a well written piece. Sure, they arent exactly metal but Smashing Pumpkins wrote some fine stuff. Ive got my fingers crossed that Melissa is playing bass for the new line-up

Rockdocta you are hopelessly deluded.
This will be Smashing Pumpkins, just like Helmet is now Helmet, the Misfits are now The Misfits, Sepultura is now Sepultura.
If it isn't about the money, then it's about this bald fool's massive ego.

I dunno, although I can agree with you on the others you mention The Samshing Pumpkins has always pretty much been a Corgan solo with mates in terms of material output. Ill check it out definately, though the last few releases of his do worry me somewhat that he may have lost his gift

well, i'll be the 1st to comment on the article at hand rather than just seeing the band name and listing all of the previous comments made whenever the Pumpkins are mentioned...
definitely the collest album title they've ever come up with (and this is coming from a huge Pumpkins fan.)

...and now it's back. Record release dates are almost always on Tuesdays. Let's make an exception to Mr. Corgan so the date can be 7/7/7. How cute. More whining about his sexual abuse and how much of a pussy he is.

The new record does not need iha and darcy to be great. Billy and jimmy are what makes the smashing pumpkins. However, they should try to get iha back at least to make it look better and more familiar onstage. This is an attempt at a come-back, make it look good to the fans. I think they end up using a couple of new guys.

Im definitely excited about this release..... I have and love all of their cds.... Machina/adore werent for every1.... They went a darker path with those cds and kind of isolated a lot of people... but i loved them.... Jimmy Chamberlin is a phenomenal drummer........ It really doesnt bug me to much about James Iha or Darcy..... But i would like to see them apart of it.... but at the same time after reading Jamesiha.org site i dont think he will be returning... They cant stand each other..... its plain and simple..... especially after things ended after the last show..... it looks like its going to be a great year for rock with new NIN also.....
and i know a lot of ignorant metal heads could give 2 cents about this news... esp. from a 90's grunge band... I really dont understand why they read news they are not interested in and then comment about it but to each their own.... all i can say is that this news site/forum is mostly for hardrock acts with some metal....

...this is almost as bad as the "New" Guns N Roses. Guess he got tired of his solo efforts flopping, so now he's gonna make a new one and stick his old band's name on it. Nice ploy Billy.

Why Saturday someone asked? Because it's 7/7/07. Billy's had this all planned out and it's probably going to fail. Machina and the Zwan disc were terrible, with the only saving grace being Jimmy's drumming. Billy's solo album was frickin' terrible and an outright embarrassment.
