SLAYER's KING Says GRAMMY-Winning Track is 'One Of The Poorest Representations Of Us' On New CD
- Feb. 21, 2007
|
|
SLAYER guitarist Kerry King recently told Sean Piccoli of Sun-Sentinel.com that the group's song "Eyes of the Insane" — for which it recently won a Grammy in the "Best Metal Performance" category — is "one of the poorest representations of us on the record," meaning SLAYER's 11th studio album, "Christ Illusion". He would have picked "Jihad" — like "Eyes", a track written by singer-bassist Tom Araya and guitarist Jeff Hanneman. King also has doubts about how well members of the Grammys' parent organization, the Recording Academy, know his band's music. "Realistically, I think people on the academy who vote pick the household name," he said. "And that's what we are." With "Reign in Blood" songs such as "Necrophobic" — "Severing flesh/gouging eyes/tearing limb from limb" — SLAYER assured itself of a home in the dungeon of popular culture. "Christ Illusion" continues SLAYER's career-long attack on mainstream sensibilities and on one institution in particular: Christianity. "Skeleton Christ", written by King, declares, "I've seen the ways of God/I'll take the devil any day," and the King-penned "Cult" screams, "The bible's where it all began/Its propaganda sells despair/And spreads the virus everywhere." For the record, "I consider myself an atheist," King said. But standing up for Satan as a way of questioning religious observance makes sense to him. The ruling class also comes in for heavy criticism. King calls the "Christ Illusion" track "Consfearacy" "a government-hating song" that he hopes anyone, regardless of country, displeased with the leadership will enjoy. He says he doesn't vote or follow politics, and has no love for either U.S. political party. "And even if I was one or the other, probably I wouldn't come out and say it because I would alienate half the world," he said. "And I'm in the business of building fans." Kerry you are a moron.
If the song is so bad, why put it on the CD so it publicly represents you?
Did the label write the song and force you to record it? Are you saying that you and the guys have no say - OR - are you saying you purposely put garbage on your CD's but don't want to suffer the consequences when people hold you accountable for what you've done?
Don't do any more interviews Kerry - your mouth is the worst thing that ever happened to Slayer.

The way I understand it, Kerry didn't means this song is a shitty one. He just said that this song is not provocative or offensive as Angel Of Death or Cult or Jihad.
That would be very stupid from him to bash a song written by his bandmate and saying: " Yes this song should have never made the album"
The lyrics are very graphic and the music sounds to me like a blend of Sugar from SOAD and a bit of Voivod Dimension Attross. This is a good song, at least it works for me.

Kerry king sucks. all of the songs slayer has released in the past 8 years suck. And then he says:
"And even if I was one or the other, probably I wouldn't come out and say it because I would alienate half the world," he said. "And I'm in the business of building fans."
Clearly he is either a Republican or Democrat, however he doesn't even have the balls to admit it.
This guy needs to shut his fat trap, stay away from any recording studio, and get back to his weak clothing line. What a joke. I can't believe I uesd to think slayer was a great band.

I think the reason that Eyes of the Insane was picked over songs like Jihad was because that song might offend people to much. Weren't they not able to play Jihad on the Jimmy Kimmel show because of the same matter?
I don't hate the song but there are way better songs on the album besides Eyes of the Insane.

Slayer didn't pick the song that was up for the grammy people! Stop being such asshole. He's saying that of all the songs on that record, that wasn't one of their stronger songs on the record. Im suprised that Cult wasn't the song they would pick, since it is the single off the record...Who know why those gay grammy people picked that song..Who cares..haha... Slayer still won, and that is awesome....
All you Kerry haters don't know what you are missing. K.K. is a very cool dude, and very smart too. I could talk and listen to that dude for hours.. Hating someone you don't know seems a little stupid to me...But what do I know, Im not a mall rat...

I think it's great Slayer were awarded a Grammy o begin with. I think it was wise for Slayer to accept the award. It's gotta be one of those things though, you know, you have to wonder who is trurning the knobs at the Grammy Committee room. You know, why not Flesh Storm? It seems like Rick Ruben had something to do with this. Eyes of the Insand sounds like one of those tracks from the Johnny Cash series Rick Rubin produced. I don't really like Rick Rubin any more. I kind of preferred the production job of God Hates Us All to Christ's Illusion. It was a nice try by Rick to give Slayer that "underproduced" sound which bands like Entombed and Motorhead can really take advantage of, though it's like applying a varnish or a laquer to give something that, you know, like the Mona Lisa, Leonardo purposely darkened the painting, so it's a little more somber in it's atmosphere than what I expect from Slayer. I think Slayer should look for a new producer. Maybe Devin Townsend isn't doing anything!

YOU HIT THE NAIL ON THE HEAD! THIS IS ANOTHER SIGN SLAYER HAS HOOD WINKED US ALL. THIS IS WHY:
I WANT TO BUILD A FAN BASE I DONT WANT MY FANS TO KNOW MY POLITICAL POSITION.
I AM A ATHEIST SO IF YOU HAVE FAITH I AM TELLING YOU I DO NOT SHARE THAT WITH YOU....I WANT TO BUILD A FAN BASE.
THINK ABOUT THIS WHAT IS THIS GUY TRYING TO SAY?
TOM HAS "COME OUT" SAYING HE HAS FAITH AND SLAYERS ANTI RELIGION THING IS ONLY A WAY TO MAKE A LIVING SO ITS OK AND HAS NO EFFECT ON HIS STANDING IN HIS CHURCH COMMUNITY OR HIS LIFE APART FROM SLAYER.
THINK ABOUT THAT AND WHAT IT SAYS
AND AM I WRONG BUT DID SLAYER SET THE PACE FOR METALS "WHO CARES WHAT YOU THINK" THING BACK IN THE 80'S?
NOW TOM SAYS THAT THE DEVIL THING AND THE DARK ARTWORK ON SLAYER COVERS WAS SOMETHING SOMEONE CAME UP WITH IN SLAYERS EARLY DAYS WHEN THEY WERE LESS OF A NAME IN THE HEAVY MUSIC SCENE THEN THEY ARE NOW AND IT WORKED TO GAIN A FAN BASE AND SO IT STUCK.
THINK ABOUT IT.
TOM SELLS OUT IN A BIG WAY, TO METAL,TO HIS FAITH, TO HIS FANS AND TO SLAYER, HOW CAN YOU SLEEP TOM?
AND MR. KING...... I DONT KNOW WHAT TO THINK
I HAVE LOST MUCH RESPECT FOR SLAYER IN THE LAST THREE YEARS.EVEN THE LAST LIVE SHOW I WENT TO WAS KIND OF A LET DOWN. I KNOW YOU SLAYER FANS AND RESPECT YOUR PASSION FOR SLAYER.I DIG SLAYER AS WELL. BUT MAN....
THATS WHAT I THINK

Any way you look at it, it's cool that such an extreme band (at least in the eyes of mainstream America) are Grammy winners. And 'Eyes of the Insane' is a cool song, not the best on the album, that's 'Flesh Storm in my opinion', but better than Kerry's tired 'Hail Satan, religion is crap, etc.' regurgitated crap that he has thrown on like all 3 or 4 of the last albums. I agree with most of what he says about religion, but it's like 'ok, enough already, we know what you think about religion!!' At least 'Eyes of the Insane' is an intelligent lyric and talks about something different and relevant. I agree with an above poster, Tom and Jeff need to seize back the reigns of Slayer artistically, cause Kerry is out of ideas (except for 'Flesh Storm' on this new album!)

I could care less what they put out. As long as some of their new stuff is hard and fast, it's all good. Slayer is a live band period anyway and when you go see them, you know they're going to play their ass off and leave you wanting more. Kerry's bashing of religion is old already though. I'd rather hear songs like war ensemble about war and the effects on soldiers than songs like cult that denounce religion and deny there is any God.

I thought that with Dave Lombardo's return, Christ Illusion would be a better album...... I was wrong. But, at least isn't as bad as the repetitive crap they released in the 90´s.
Kerry King still a teenager trying to prove he's a macho-man. He should grow the fuck up, we all know he's gay, and that's why Dave Mustaine didn't want him in Megadeth. That's also the reason why Dave Lombardo left Slayer, Kerry was always trying to get "intimate" with Dave. Dave couldn't even play with his shirt off!!!!!! I almost think he's jealous that he didn't write the Grammy-winning song. I mean, who would come right out and basically criticize your own music to make a point about the Grammys? Sounds bitter and jealous to me.

I have been a Slayer fan for quite some time now. I thought Christ Illusion was a good album. No matter how much people bad mouth the album and the Slayer of today. Slayer is still way better than the majority of most modern metal artist's. I think Kerry King is a talented man, but he seems to always bad mouth something or someone. I never hear so much crap come out of the other 3 members mouths as I do Kerrys. The man seems very ungreatfull for what he has acomplished in metal, whom he has collaborated with and the fact that Slayer of 2007 still reigns in fairly strong.

Rick Rubin obviously barely showed up in the studio during the recording process of Christ Illusion (read earlier Blabbermouth articles) and he was only labeled as "executive producer". I guess Josh Abraham (never heared of him before) spent the most time producing and mixing the album, so he's resoponsible for the sound. Which I don't like that much.
As I said long before the release of Christ Illusion: No Andy Wallace as (co-) producer and mixer, no Slayer album with a kickass razor-sharp production. Wallace was involved in the making of Slayer's best albums, RIB, SOH and SITA after all.
They must bring Wallace back if they decide to carry on, although I'd prefer Dave Lombardo back in Grip Inc. But that won't happen anyway. And Slayer should tune only have a step down, like on the "classics" - same with Metallica and the standard E tuning.
As for Devin Townsend: he's very occupied with several things, trust me...

I can't believe all the idiots on this site. Too many different types to answer, but to those who think Slayer ended with Seasons ...
Divine Intervention and Christ Illusion are both great albums. Diabolus is probably their worst, but it has two great songs - Bitter Pieace and Point, and some good ones. GHUA is also patchy, but overall still not bad.

I seriously felt that "Christ Illusion" was their comback album. Having Dave Lombardo hitting the skins again actually made the rest of the band play to their potential. This album blows everything they've done after Lombardo's departure out of the water. They work the best as that line up. The only thing on this album that bothered me though were the guitar solos. They weren't too great and they sounded way too alike.

Metallica went soft, Megadeth went soft and then came back heavy on their last record. Anthrax does not have a singer. Pantera broke up and Dime is dead. Sepultura is not the same without Max. Suicidal can't tour cause of Muir's back. Someone make a time machine and go back to the 80's. cause that is when all of these bands ruled the metal world. The new Slayer is not up to par with the other Lombardo material, cause most of it was writtten before he came back to the band. The "so called" new album has been tweaked for a few years now. Slayer is still heavy, but their albums from seasons in the abyss and before would take one listen and the riffs grabbed you by the balls. The new stuff might get stuck in your head if you hear it enough. (just like a bad milli vanilli song) So people out there, realize that the whole Satan act is just that, an act. It sells. Kerry and the boys are laughin their way to the bank with a grammy in hand while puttin out fast, heavy crappy music. Time to put on reign in blood and set the time machine to the 1980's Cheerz,SuicidalMuthaFka

You clearly haven't heard Christ Illusion or you wouldn't think Kerry's a republican. I don't know if he changed his mind or anything, buy "Consfearacy" is anything BUT a pro-Bush song, It bashes Bush like hell.

"The new Slayer is not up to par with the other Lombardo material, cause most of it was writtten before he came back to the band. The "so called" new album has been tweaked for a few years now."
Dude! Know what the fuck you are talking about before you open your MOUTH! That is totally UNTRUE~ Dave has been with Slayer again for like 4 years almost, this record WAS written while he was there.... There maybe some idea's they have been kicking around in that time, but the record was written with Dave there...

"stone sour should have won that shit anyway, not fucking slayer"
You retard! Stone Sour is a rock band, they should have NEVER been put in the metal catagory to begin with. Stone Sour is NOT Slipknot!

Grow up....just grow up. Of course no one would say anything negative about Slayer at a Slayer concert. If you didn't like them then you wouldn't be there. One on one (mano a mano as it were) if you ask for my opinion I'm gonna give it to you and let the fallout be what it is. And, in conclusion, from the wide variety of comments on this site (this thread and others) I doubt many metalheads could agree long enough to pick a shirt to wear much less to beat someone down (or is it up?) Ooh, I'm being threatened on the internet by a random stranger whom I will probably never meet. Gotta go hide under my bed for the rest of the day...NOT.

Hey SlayerCryBaby. If it means that much to you Lombardo came back in 2002 after paul left. He then went on the Ozzfest tour with Slayer in 04. The songs for Christ have been kicked around for years. Most are songs that were around before Lombardo came back. THEN they worked on them together to try and improve them. That was the jist of the post. This was admitted by King himself. Ask him the next time you have your lips on his ass. YOUR QUOTE " Kerry is a very cool dude, and very smart too. I could talk and listen to that dude for for hours" This speaks volumes about you IQ. After a line like that, It is you who needs to just SHUT UP.

are a poor representation of this band. ESPECIALLY the unbearable nu-metal tinged noise that was Diabolus.
Last good album? Seasons in the Abyss.
