RUSH Frontman: New Album Is 'Some Of The Best Work We've Done In Years' - Feb. 26, 2007
RUSH vocalist/bassist Geddy Lee recently spoke to Revolver magazine (web site) about the group's new album, "Snakes & Arrows", due on May 1 via Atlantic.

"It's hard to describe," said Lee. "It's big, it's bold, and I think it's some of the best work we've done in years. I'm really pleased with the quality of the songs, and there's lots of playing on it."

The upcoming CD promises to be the most organic-sounding RUSH effort in decades, having been influenced by their experience of making "Feedback", the band's 2004 EP of classic-rock covers.

"Playing those songs that we loved and grew up on, I think it helped us remember how sometimes it's the simplicity or the directness of an arrangement that really makes a great song," said Lee. "And the other thing is, we played all together in the studio for a lot of the 'Feedback' stuff. That's something that a lot of producers had been pushing us to do for a while but which we hadn't done in years. It was great to turn off the click and just play — you know, not worry so much about being so, quote, metronomic — and that definitely carried over into this record."

The tracks for RUSH's new album were put to tape at Allaire Studios in upstate New York with co-producer Nick Raskulinecz. "I have never enjoyed the recording process so much, nor been so satisfied with the results," drummer Neil Peart wrote in December on his web site.

Peart previously told Billboard.com some of his lyrics for the new songs were inspired by his motorcycle journeys throughout the United States, chronicled in the recent book "Roadshow: Landscape with Drums".

"Just seeing the power of evangelical Christianity and contrasting that with the power of fundamentalist religion all over the world in its different forms had a big effect on me," he said.

Rush or any other band for that matter should know how to make a good if not great records. The Rolling Stones and Aerosmith however should have given up long ago. But I digress.

Hype or not Rush never disappoints. Can't say that any of their release other than Caress of Steel have been anything short of genius and well crafted progressive music. Sure Geddy, Alex and Neil are going to hype the new CD and say things that may seem common place. But at this point in time would they say anything else. Like many artists their proud of their work or they wouldn't release it to begin with.

I'm a 30 year Rush fan and they are my absolute favorite band. After 15 concerts and collecting their music it's hard to be objective about one's favorite band but it's also easy to be a harsh critic if your favorite band doesn't live up to expectations. As with any release I have high hopes for the new release and either way I'll be back in the audience to see them one more time irregardless.

now you make me laugh dude.. both great bands but when it comes to "musicianship" rush kicks some ass,, including slayer, dream theater.. they are equivalent to CAMEL (british prog-rock band).

Cannot wait for the album. I believe in Geddy, if he says, he feels like this is the best work in years, i believe it's "his" true feelings. A great bass player and a great/true person i think.

Cheers to everyone,, first post of mine in blabbermouth.

i look at all these news articles and the comments that follow, and i realize, that noone is ever gonna have something to say that is in the least bit positive. for once, i'd like to see something like, "good for those guys. they worked hard, were discovered by someone and now they are putting their music out there for everyone to hear." this goes for every single band in the world. there is always gonna be some jerkoff douchebag that is gonna say to any band, "you suck".

well let me be the first to say it.

TO EVERY SINGLE BAND IN THE WORLD THAT HAS EVER MADE SOMETHING OF THEMSELVES AND BEEN SIGNED AND FOUND SUCCESS IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY, CONGRATULATIONS. YOU ARE REAPING THE BENEFITS OF ALL THE HARD WORK YOU PUT IN TO GET TO WHERE YOU ARE TODAY. FUCK ALL THE LOSERS WHO HAVE NOTHING BETTER TO DO THAN BASH YOUR BAND. THEY ALL WISH THEY HAD THE AMBITION AND DRIVE AND TALENT THAT YOU HAVE TO GET WHAT THEY WANT.

maybe instead of bashing bands, like all you blabbermouth (and other web forum) posters like to do, use that energy to pic up some staff paper and write a song, or pick up a guitar and start learning how to play, or pick up some sticks, get behind a kit and start laying down a beat. then maybe you can enjoy the success that all these bands have. maybe you can sell your musc to someone who will appreciate it. maybe you'll inspire someone to do what you do and become a success and in turn, start the cycle all over again.

He's not saying that it's going to be the best record of the last thirty years. He's saying that they're moving back to a slightly harder, more natural sound--which is obvious from Vapor Trails, Feedback, and their last tour even without his comments.

Not that their self-assessments are really relevant, though. It's my understanding that they all think that Caress of Steel was a piece of shit, while I consider it a masterpiece.

Easy bet: this album will definitely be one of the top ten releases of 2007.

Rush has been moving back towards a much more hard rock sound since Counterparts. Yeah, Test for Echo, had a bit more keyboards on it, but those 2 albums rock harder than anything they had done since Moving Pictures.

I think that this new Rush album has the potential to be great.

The synthesizers weren't so bad, especially on their very early eighties stuff. It stopped being cool somewhere around Grace Under Pressure, but that album still rocks at times ("Distant Early Warning", "Afterimage", and "Red Sector A" rule). Signals is a true classic, and of course, you have Moving Pictures. All of which have all sorts of synths here and there, and it still kicks ass. I think a minimal amount of synthesizer work is always welcome in Rush.

I don't think synthesizers and keyboards detract to the quality of hard rock music, so long as the sound flows with the song well and doesn't feel "forced." I believe that whenever Rush uses synthesizer or keyboard, it generally is implemented rather well.

^^I agree, for the most part.

There are a couple songs that are totally killed by keyboards.

"Red Lenses" comes to mind. Ugh.
