DAVE MUSTAINE On METALLICA: 'There's No More Sour Grapes'
- Mar. 5, 2007
|
|
Cassandra Szklarski of the Canadian Press recently conducted an interview with MEGADETH mainman Dave Mustaine. A few excerpts from the chat follow: On the song "A Tout Le Monde" — long misinterpreted as pro-suicide when in fact it was written about the sudden death of his mother — which inspired a deranged gunman who opened fire at a Montreal community college last year: "The song doesn't belong to the killer. The song belongs to the people of Montreal, if anything it belongs to me and it was my gift to them. It was never meant to be misinterpreted like that." On why he chose to record a new version of the song, which has been reworked as a duet (with Cristina Scabbia of the Italian goth/metal band LACUNA COIL) and will be the first single off the band's new album, "United Abominations": "The song never got its opportunity to get out and it's a total fan favourite, people love it wherever we're at." On his original plans to re-record the song as a duet with tabloid staple Lisa Marie Presley: " Lisa Marie Presley, there's a certain calibre of talent there that she obviously could sing the song, but I don't know that people would look at it as seriously because of her pedigree. I'm excited that she would even know what MEGADETH is and I'm flattered that she accepted." On the 2004 documentary "Metallica: Some Kind of Monster", in which Mustaine berates METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich for kicking him out of the band instead of trying to help him deal with his addiction: "After the documentary I hated them, but it took some time for this whole thing to kind of reveal itself. There are certain things that I miss in James, certain things that I'm glad are gone with Lars and just there's no more sour grapes. How can you sit in a house on a hill and have gas in your tank and food in your refrigerator and be bitter about something like that, especially so many years ago? . . The good thing about it is that it's finally given proof to the world that I was part of this band. Regardless of whether I was in it for awhile or not, truth was, it was in the formidable stages. I was the only guitar player and James just sang." Read the entire interview at www.canada.com.

I don't know how the re-recording is going to turn out, but I look forward to it and the release of the album. More and more I find myself respecting Mustaine as a human being, and that interview is a good example why. If you choose to hate him, that fine with me. But what kind of person does that make you, I wonder? Either way, the new Megadeth album is going to kick ass.

Glad he finally figured it out. Mustaine has a successful metal band also, there really is no reason for him to be pissed at Metallica anymore. What was done is done.
Also, I'm pretty sure James also played guitar. I mean he did play like all guitar riffs, and all bass lines when he and Lars just got together, so I doubt James ever "just" sang. Plus I've seen a bootleg video of their very very early days when Mustaine had a BC Rich Bich, and James was definitely playing and singing.

It would be nice to have Megadeth + Metallica to play at the same concert, but I doubt Dave would ever want that. James on the other hand barely ever even mentions Dave.
Scratch that, Maiden + Metallica at a same concert would be heaven for me.

Do Lars and Mustaine act like a gay couple there?
Mustaine: Remember that guy I broke his leg cause he hit you, I was protecting my band member.
Lars: Yeah, I thought you always had a tender side of you.

Wouldn't it be funny if somehow their testicles grow back and Metallica puts out a GOOD album?!? Then Mustaine is gonna start this whole shit over again... Of course, I lost faith in both bands a loooooooooong time ago, but there's always a slight chance that both of these bands could put out something good. Just like there's a slight chance that Randy Rhoads, Cliff Burton and Cozy Powell come back to life and start a killer power trio.

I saw the guy that said he had a dream that Dave Mustaine joined Metallica to do the songs he had a part in making. Here is my dream about these guys:
Dave can't seem to keep the same band together so in a last resort he asks James, Lars and Jason Newsted (just to bother James and Lars) to be in Megadeth.
Lars sees dollar signs and convinces James it would be great.
Megadeth makes a CD with Dave, James, Jason and Lars as its members and does a stadium tour around the world making more money than Metallica ever made! Megadeth's new CD sells double what Metallica's black album ever sold.
Dave fires them all.

Dave would ask Jason because it makes the dream better. Dave played with Ron and then Cliff. Jason was Cliff's replacement when he passed. The new Megadeth line-up would need a bass player and Jason adds friction.
Two side notes: I miss Jason in Metallica just because he was so damn intense when playing live especially when he did insane backing vocals. Metallica doesn't play with intensity anymore.
I also happen to think Robert Trujillo is one of the best bass players around. I am a huge ST fan and Infectious Grooves fan. The bass was phenominal in IG!

There's one big problem... Lars can't play his own songs, let alone songs that had good drummers play on them.
My dream is that Metallica died in a plane crash in 1989, and we could always just wonder what could have been had the greatest band on earth continued to make music.... little would we all know that Metallica living past 1989 is the worst thing that has ever happened to music.

Too bad Lars and James have forgotten Cliff. At least his fans keep his memory alive. Didn't see anything about Metallica remembering Cliff on the 20th anniversary of his death. That is Sad But True. Fuckers!

Why do people on here always bitch about Dave commenting on Metallica when the fucking press are the ones who bring up the subject? Yet so many of the same people will defend Kerry King or Lars Ulrich's prissy bullshit come hell or high water. Given the fact that they fired the man, and then 7 of 10 cuts on their debut were songs he had written.... i would say he has a right to be pissed off, regardless of how long it has been. Someone hijacking your art is a far cry different than them stealing a couple dollars from you. It's like someone stealing your soul. So, if the man wants to have bad blood towards Lars... let him. I just think the media should leave him alone about it. I guarantee you, when dave is on his death bed and they do some kind of "final interview," the assclown will coax some kind of hostile response about metallica out of him. At least Dave never sued his fans.

Dave would give anything to be in Metallica. He is so not over it. He says he´s over it, and in the next sentence he just has to mention how he played guitar in Metallica, just to point that out.
Dave has always been embarrasing when it comes to talkin about Metallica. Metallica has just ignored his pointless rants and when Lars Ulrich finally answerd Dave he totally owned him:

"The good thing about it is that it's finally given proof to the world that I was part of this band."
Dave clearly underestimated his contribution to not only to Metallica, but to the Heavy Metal genre. The fact that he still has an outlet and gets consistent exposure is evidence that people love his music.
I don't know if it's a matter of his perspective, him being oblivious, taking things for granted or what, it seems kind of weird that he would find vindication in a documentary produced a couple of years ago for something that happened over 20 years ago that is widely known.
I don't think it's a matter of proof--it's about confronting those who he believes wronged him and coming to terms with it after all these years.

Sometimes I'm embarrassed for all of you. It's obvious that the reporters are the ones asking the Metallica questions. Why? Because *anything* he answers will make good copy and sell. For proof, all you have to do is look at this article and what part of it you chose to flood the comment boxes with. The Metallica thing was only a small percentage of what Blabbermouth reprinted, but it occuppies 99% of what all of you are reacting to. As long as you keep reacting to it. As long as you keep clicking on any link that mentions Mustaine and Metallica... then the reporters will continue to ask the question. Who would have even known about this interview had the Metallica question not been asked? Bori couldn't have titled this article with it. And none of you would have clicked on it.
So who is REALLY obsessed with the Mustaine/Metallica relationship here, and cannot get over it? Mustaine, or all of YOU?

I've never understood why Mustaine has made so many public comments about how he's had sour grapes (especially in Some Kind of Monster when he says "everything I've done has turned to shit"). MEGADETH has sold over 20 MILLION records world-wide and have 4 platinum records, 1 multi-platinum and several gold records and home videos in the US. Other than Metallica, Ozzy, AC/DC, KISS, PRIEST and MAIDEN, what other metal band has a more impressive history than Megadeth. Mustaine is awesome, but sometimes he's like the guy who wins the $10,000,000 lottery but complains he didn't win the $100,000,000 one.

played a festival together awhile back(mid-to-late 90's) I believe!!
Don't recall what festival it was or where it was at, but I vaguely remember seeing pics of Dave and Lars together in either Metal Maniacs or Metal Hammer!!!!
Although I would like to see a Metallica reunion with Dave, that would be a bigger trainwreck than the VH and Anthrax reunions COMBINED!!!!! But I would pay to see James punch Lars again, like he did in their earlier years:
Q:Have you ever punched Lars out? A:Absolutely! It was way back in the beginning when we played The Troubadour in Los Angeles. We had got our first encore ever and we went backstage and agreed that we were going to play this song and he went into something else which we hadn't rehearsed in months and months. I didn't know the lyrics, so we just muddled our way through it and after he got up from his drum riser I just slugged him really hard in the stomach and said "Don't ever fucking do that again!" There have been a few times where I have felt like using my size against him, but he gets the picture most of the time.

Metallica rarely, if ever, mentions Megadeth in the press.

You know, it's not that he can't get over it, it's that the media KEEPS ASKING HIM ABOUT IT. Of course he's going to answer questions when they are asked.

Isn't metallica's first song ever was called Hit The Lights that appeared on some metal compilation record with James H on vocals/rythm guitar/bass, lars Ulrich on drums and Lloyd Grant on lead guitar.
Dave was not even there when James and Lars wrote Hit The Lights. Hit the Lights defined what metallica will sound like on Kill em All..
Sorry Dave, but sometimes you are full of yourself..

Metallica's primary goal is sustaining mass commercial appeal of the mainstream hard rock radio crowd (Godsmack, Disturbed, etc.) Kirk and James might have the ability to bring Metallica back around someday but as long as Lars is in the band fame and money will remain more important than honest music.
Megadeth has come around again from the Risk era. System has Failed was very good. They are also touring with Heaven and Hell. Who do think Metallica will bring along their next tour?

u r fucking right man!!!! dave was just a guy that jumped in, like newsted and kirk, dave was a very very small part about it, if he didnt want to answer the questions on metallica he wouldnt answer them!!!! its publicity for him!! and i honestly think metallica will bring, children of bodom on tour with tthem, also i think they will unfortunatly bring trivium, but hey metallica live isa metallica live!!!

Metallica & Megadeth should put the past behind them and make up and go out on tour together. I would love to see them tour together but that is probably never ever gonna happen :( But i can always dream though.

Mustaine should never have told Lars he needed help. Megadeth is way better than Craptallica. Dave doesnt need those washed up sellout posers. Megadeth's last few albums blow away the st anger bullshit
