SAMMY HAGAR Says EDDIE And ALEX VAN HALEN Will Not Attend ROCK HALL Induction
- Mar. 7, 2007
|
|
Joel Selvin of the San Francisco Chronicle recently conducted an interview with Sammy Hagar. A few excerpts from the chat follow: On VAN HALEN's induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame: "Would you have ever guessed? I wouldn't have either. I think I carved out a real stupid career in the sense that I was never loved by the press. I've received some awards with VAN HALEN. We got a Grammy, an American Music Award, MTV Awards and all that stuff. But Sammy Hagar is not the Bruce Springsteen kind of guy. "I don't know how I screwed up. I haven't screwed up actually. I always had the reputation as a goofball, no respect as an artist, things like that. I never earned that. I told my band when I left VAN HALEN: 'I'm going to warn you guys about one thing — the venture we are going into now, this party we are throwing, we are never going to get respect from anyone. But the fans are going to love us. The fans are going to flock to us. We're going to be as big as anyone, but no one is going to respect us for doing it.' And, sure enough, I was right." "If I was ever a genius at anything. I found everything I like to do and where I want to live and I rolled it all together. I got a business. I can play music at my business. I love tequila and that whole lifestyle, the Mexican food. I've got a Mexican restaurant. I have the tequila that goes with it. I have the whole lifestyle rolled into one. I love that Cabo Wabo lifestyle, which is beach all day, party all night." On his Cabo Wabo tequila: "No one can do what I do because to everyone else, it's a business. For me, it's become a business, but originally rock 'n' roll was my business. And so when I made tequila, I could do everything the right way. I could waste product. I could throw a lot away. You drain off the barrel. The bottom of the barrel is worse. You want the middle cut. We've always done it that way. "For me, it was like a hobby. I had rock 'n' roll money. So I did it as a luxury and that's half the reason why Cabo Wabo is so good and pure because, like I said, I never had to make any money with it. I just got lucky. I didn't have to. I just wanted to make the best tequila in the world — big ego trip. It's like the Rothchilds of wine. Like the Rothchilds need money. They try to make the best frigging wine in the planet. They raised the bar is what they did." On former VAN HALEN bassist Michael Anthony: "He's my good buddy. It's not him and us against the others. He got thrown out of the band, too. I don't think Ed and Al are going [to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction]. The word I got from our management is that now they said they're not going. Roth'll be there. S -- , he's there right now. He's already got a room. I'm fine with him. I'm fine with Ed and Al. I don't talk to Eddie. I'm not mad at Eddie. I still love the guy. He's just hard to get along with. "When we were all going, when they were gonna do their tour with Roth that just blew out — I could have told you that; I bet money that would never happen. I would love to see it. They owe it to the fans. They should do it. I believe it's the right thing for VAN HALEN to do is to do a David Lee Roth reunion. Look how long it's been. It's never worked. This is the fourth abortion. There's a lot of fans out there and they've been waiting a long time for this. And it's gotta happen someday. We did it — they should do it. Before it blew out, everybody was going. But the word now was, from Ed and Al, 'we're not playing.' " On the other 2007 inductees: "I'm really happy about PATTI SMITH. That's one thing I like about the Hall of Fame. I never expected to be inducted. I really didn't. I knew VAN HALEN would eventually somehow, someway, but it was still hard for me to imagine Sammy Hagar being part of it. But it is. I'm so honored. But someone like PATTI SMITH, who really had such a short, intense career. She did it so cool. She really deserves it for being such a rebel and being a girl at that time. She was cool. I think it's cool that they honor those kinds of people. Some awards shows don't. They go with the most commercial. Half the people don't know who PATTI SMITH is, but I think it's awesome. She was a true artist, a Neil Young kind of artist, where, s -- , man, you do it my way or forget it. I like that. I'm almost that kind of artist. For some reason, my art doesn't project that. But I'm that kind of person. I never cop out. I never sell out. I never endorse things. It's so funny. What did I do wrong? Or right? " R.E.M. — another artsy band. I like R.E.M., they're not my kind of band, but they made some great records. GRANDMASTER FLASH. I don't own a GRANDMASTER FLASH record, but he was really the innovator. I like who they're recognizing this year. The RONETTES. How long have they been waiting? For Sammy Hagar to be a part of that crazy, eclectic group, I like that part of it. If it was BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN, U2 and Sammy Hagar, I'd be this thin, little guy — oh, man, I'm going to get no respect at this thing. But with this eclectic group, I kinda fit in, quirky-wise." Read the entire interview at the San Francisco Chronicle.

Ed/Alex are in. Then they're out. Then they'll be there. Then they're not gonna be. Then they're back in. Now out.

I like Sammy. He seems like a cool dude who has his sh!t together. Just a laid back guy who wants nothing more than to have a good time. It sucks that Eddie is such a douche that he can't get along with anyone. If Alex wasn't his brother he'd probably already kicked him out of the band. I hope all members of Van Halen show at the ceremony and chaos insues. I can see it now, Eddie gets silly and Hagar and Roth go balistic on his drunk ass! \m/

Having seen Eddie Van Halen on the 2004 tour and having seen footages of him lately, including his thing at the NAMM show, the Tulip thing, the two songs they played with Kenny Chesney, etc. I'd like to be able to make people realize that a live performance by Eddie Van Halen (either a tour or a live performance at the RRHOF) is not something we should be hoping for in the near future. Unless he goes under serious treatments. Look, tickets are expensive and It'd be almost immoral for a promoter to organize something like this. He's all over the place, totally fucks up the solos, misses cues and generally look like an idiot, etc.
Better to 1) Live with the memory of a healthy Eddie 2) Attend some Othwer Half shows with Mike and Sammy for the Van Hagar fans or either 3) Attend a "Atomic Punk" concert or a 4) David Lee roth solo date for the Van Halen/Roth fans.
Because otherwise, my friends, I'm afraid our heroe Edward will finish like Jaco Pastorius, a genius who spent his last couple of years making goofy appearances in public, totally intoxicated, before being found dead somewhere, forgetten by the public. Then they will issue a boxset in his memory and everybody will talk about our great this guy once was. Sad, soooo sad.

Unbeknownst to the larger part of the American audience that are pummeled to death by all the Clear Channel owned radio stations with all the bland generic crap in every genre from blues to hip hop to alternative to metal and whatever else. But she's still out there. Not that I expect anyone here to care about that, but just for the record I felt I had to mention that...

Come on you old men. You should all be happy for eachother's success and put the past/grudges/bad times behind. Sammy and Roth can do it, now why can't you? I love Van Halen, mainly when it was with Roth, but I have respect for Sammy as well. It seems Eddie is keeping a hold up on everything. This is getting to be a rock n' roll soap opera here. I hate soap operas. They should be happy that despite everybody's differences- they've made songs that will forever be a classic. Good times bad times get over it, thats not what should matter most.

I would think Hagar would have a better idea than anyone of us here on Blabbermouth. Eddie needs to go to rehab end of story. If they were smart and could all get along; they should tour with both Dave and Sammy. The fans would get the best of both worlds. But let's face it Eddie's gone and lost his mind! Dave's voice is shot and Sammy's too busy signing shit and downing his own tequila! Michael Anthony just wants to play! Wolfie? He should just start his own band with kids his own age... It's only a matter of time before the train wreck on the induction to the RRHOF.

Umm, I think it was the other way around dude. Van Halen began life as a rather shitty Montrose tribute band. Yeah they had a great guitar masturbationist, but it took Sammy Hagar lobbying to get them on tour and Montrose's producer to get 'em launched. Niether Ronnie nor the rest of the band wanted them, and Eddie and Dave's Asshole behavior almost got 'em punted after a couple of shows. Now they did make a classic debut album, and pretty good cult following, but if it wasn't for Quiet Riot and Twisted Sister, Van Halen never would have gotten the kind of radio push, especially with that crap Roy Orbison cover on an otherwise crappy album. I'll tell you something else. every album after VH1 was inferior to the one before it. Yes 1984 was an improvement over crap live Diver Down, Fair Warning and Women & Children First, it still was nowhere near the genius of the first two. Van Halen was through creatively, and Roth hadn't of left, there'd probaly 6 different bar bands calling themselves some version of Mike Van Tramp's L.A. Ratt Riot, eaking out some meager living. Hagar would have had the huge solo career in the 80's, since he would get all the credit he deserved for those 90's albums, he might be getting in the Hall solo. I'll tell you what else, a certain plane doesn't crash in Lakeland Florida, Quiet Riot gets in the Hall, and no one knows who the fuck Van Halen is.

These guys... Man, it is just a huge downer for us fans listening to all this crap from these guys. But what does it matter? The RRHOF is a joke too. As long as a great band like Rush is kept off the ballot simply because an editor from Rolling Stone doesn't like them (lot more to the story, but that's the short end of it), the Hall will continue to be a joke, especially inducting a band like Blondie prior to great acts like VH, or the aforementioned Rush. It's all a joke.

For all of you 20 year old who think they know rock 'n roll, Van Halen were not HUGE until 1984, and a big part of that is because hard had suddenly become popular the year before when "Cum on Feel The Noize" broke onto radio. Oh Shit, I forgot. Def Leppard had a little to do with it too. Yeah, they may have headlined arenas back then, but so did Every hard rock band. I'll tell something else. Rock radio did NOT get behind Van Halen until after 1984. At least not in DC. The stuff off of the first album didn't make it into regular rotation until years later. Now I know what you're going to say, it doesn't matter if it's on the radio, but guess what : as far as the Hall is concerned it does. In order to be Hall of Fame worthy, you have to transcend the genre. You also have to have sustained greatness. One or two great albums do not get you in. That's why you aren't elgible until 25 years after your first record. That's also why some many other bands that don't make it. Now VAn Halen 1 and 2 were great records. 1984 was good, but it hit at a time that MTV and radio were playing every hard tock song that had a funny video. The other albums with Roth had a good song or two, but for the most part they were terrible. And they were creatively spent before Hagar showed. Why else do you think that they totally changed they sound when Sammy joined? Why else do think that they flat sucked the second Sammy left?
As far as the Quiet Riot comment, no, I don't really think that there was ever a snowball's chance that they were Hall bound, even if Randy Rhoades lived. I was party just trying to see what kind of reaction I'd get. Far be it for me or anyone to shit on DLR era VH. But the point I was trying to make was that Eddie was not ther only great guitarist out there. I do believe that Randy was better though. I also think that head to head Hammet would hold his own. I also know for a fact that without Sammy, there would be no hall for those guys.

And now we can expect the high road from the H o F cerimonies I hope they let both Sammy and Dave, oh and Mikey up to except the award on behalf of the the other half of Van Halen and have some fun, and not have another band do it instead.
Maybe Alex will make a surprise visit, he is a cool too.

"For all of you 20 year old who think they know rock 'n roll, Van Halen were not HUGE until 1984."
I'll quote Wikipedia for ya... "By 1980, Van Halen was perhaps the world's most successful and influential hard rock band."
Go back to school dude, you need it.
For the record...I'm 39. Bought the debut in '78. Saw 'em live in '79 and '82. Packed venues both times. They had placed four albums in the Top 10 before Quiet Riot broke through. It's largely because of VAN HALEN that Top 40 radio began to warm to the Hard Rock acts that followed.
"I'll tell something else. Rock radio did NOT get behind Van Halen until after 1984. At least not in DC."
Then D.C. was the only radio market NOT playing the band before then. I doubt that's accurate though. You haven't been right about anything else.
"I also know for a fact that without Sammy, there would be no hall for those guys."
No, you don't "know for a fact"...that's simply your opinion. I disagree. But I'm glad Sammy's era happened...and I'm glad he'll be there.

And not just a couple of months, it looks like years. I have a friend in a band and the dude was a grump and a drunk just like Eddie Van Halen, he tried to kick it himself, but once back at the clubs doing gigs, he hit the juice harder, then he wnet to rehab for a couple of months, but a couple of months later back on the juice again. Not until he was in rehab for 2 years, a year straight, then off and on for another, did he get serious and STOPPED, man we missed him but he came back and played, and didn't even look at the stuff, and didn't want it anymore either.
But, one thing he had over Eddie Van Halen he was only 36 when he started the rehab.
It's real hard to teach an old dog new tricks, especially a drunk one.

Why do these guitar rock ledgends always become drug users or alcoholics and some even kill them selves? Eddie seemed like a really cool guy and smart? Damn he married Valerie Bertinelli she was nice.
Kind of like a Tom Shiltz of Boston or Neil Schon of Journey, not a snob or a trouble maker he kind of acted like a partier, but it was mostly just an act to put himself in the star roll, I guess he got caught up in it?

Oh yeah, except when he said he would never perform with van halen again unless he toured alongside DLR doing a split set for the fans, then came the reunion of 2004.
Besides that though he seems like a pretty cool laid back guy who is easy to get along with.
And Alex stand up to your brother for once, show up to the Rock hall of fame without him, maybe that will knock some sense into him, and see what an a-hole he has become.

For retards like BOOM BOOM.VH needed Sammy just as much if not more than he needed them. With DLR gone and the band needing a change in direction.Sammy was the perfect frontman.Boom you're the one who doesn't deserve any RESPECT because you're a LITTLE BITCH W/ FGT WINGS and NO BRAIN.I agree VH is in the Hall with or without Sammy.Yet I do believe they would have waited longer to be inducted.

I wonder how much of this is smoke being blown up our as*es ??
I mean, it would certainly explain the daily changing headlines making for renewed interest in one of the greatest party rock bands of all time.
But, don't let's get too carried away with the RnR HOF's importance, I mean shit, where the f*** is KISS Induction ?!?!

"So? some web page says that and you think it true? it also said "perhaps" i notice how you left that part out."
Really...sure looks like that word was included to me dipshit.
"morons like you dont even know what to beleive unless its on the net. "
No...morons like you seemingly need verification on these things. I lived the era...Van Halen were that huge. Deal with it. The fact that its documented for any shitbrain like yourself to verify is a plus. Maybe YOU should start using resource materials...instead of just spouting your thin opinions.
"who gives a shit about top 40? in the 70's, just rock radio was playing kiss, ted nugent , alice cooper, cheap trick, zepplin, floyd,etc.... who the hell needed or wanted to hear leo sayer one minute and VH the next?"
Rock radio played Van Halen as well you uneducated twat. I with you on not wanting to listen to Leo Sayer though...
"Whatever cause you dont know dick about much."
Actually...my dick knows more about music than you do spud.

I used to like Eddie, I wanted to become him, but as it turns out, he's a real douche. - Nacho Libre
Eddie VH is a real douche guys. I remember reading interviews with him when they first came out and he always talked about how much he loved to play. He can't even play anymore let alone tour anymore. He's washed up. Total douche...

For those interested in record sales. Hagar's (57,000) look no bigger than DLR's. "He keeps a band on salary year-round and rehearses two or three days a week. But he is bowing out of the record wars, after putting a year's work into last year's "Livin' It Up," which lofted three Top 10 radio hits, but still sold only a paltry 57,000 copies. "The record industry sales for a guy like me are over even though my records are as good as they've ever been," he says. Instead Hagar thinks he'll give away new recordings to fans on the Internet and just keep touring."
On the RHCP: The band will be inducted by Velvet Revolver (after Red Hot Chili Peppers were unavailable), who will perform a medley of Van Halen music.

Keep in mind Hagar was already very successful before he joined VH, and his sales output with them is comparable to Roth's VH period.

You DLR lovers have to stop being so pathetic over DLR and Eddie getting back together it hasn't happened and it won't happen.
Even the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame doesn't want DLR around, he's like the herpes, he won't go away and there's no cure to get rid of him.
They'll get inducted and that will be it for Van Halen.
They'll go down the same path as other bands that are done.
Only sell BMG greatest hits CD's at Walmart.
Eddie had the world by the balls in 1996 with Balance at the top of the charts and most of the songs being played on the radio or in heavey rotation on MTV had another sound track in a movie Twister and videos on the way into the Twister theme at Universal.
He gave it all up for the bottle and it will never be the same.
