VELVET REVOLVER To Perform ROTH And HAGAR Tunes At ROCK HALL - Mar. 9, 2007
Launch Radio Networks reports: VELVET REVOLVER has lined up two songs to perform for VAN HALEN at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony on Monday (March 12). The band will honor both David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar by playing a song from their respective eras — for Roth, VELVET REVOLVER will play 1978's "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love", and for Hagar they'll play "Runaround" from 1991.

In addition to the performance at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City, VELVET REVOLVER frontman Scott Weiland and lead guitarist Slash will induct VAN HALEN into the Rock Hall.

Hagar and original VAN HALEN bassist Michael Anthony will be at the ceremony, but it's unknown whether they will join VELVET REVOLVER on stage for the songs.

Roth says he backed out of the event after he was told he couldn't perform with VELVET REVOLVER. Guitarist Eddie Van Halen announced yesterday (Thursday, March 8) that he's going into rehab, and drummer Alex Van Halen will stay close to home to offer his brother whatever help he can.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony, which will also feature R.E.M., PATTI SMITH, THE RONETTES, and GRANDMASTER FLASH & THE FURIOUS FIVE, will air live on VH1 Classic beginning at 8:30 p.m. ET on Monday.

...if you're gonna play one song from each era...those two are certainly better than the arguably more obvious "Jump" and "Why Can't This Be Love?"

Still...it's silly VH members past and present aren't playing instead.

"For his part, Roth had every intention of being at the Waldorf to celebrate, and he also wanted to perform. He asked to sing "Jump" with Velvet Revolver, who are scheduled to do two songs in tribute to Van Halen, but he was told the band didn't think they could learn the song and do it justice in time for the ceremony. Then Roth offered to do any other song from his era with Van Halen, at which point he was told that he would not be allowed to perform. So he's decided to skip the event altogether."

DLR is absolutely right to not attend!
Been thinking about this. To not let Dave perform at his own induction is a joke. To expect him to sit there and watch Velvet do his songs when this is his night is ridiculous.
Some idiot in a suit thinks it will get more ratings to have Velvet perform. Corporate greed. Extremely anti-Rock N Roll.
Dave and Mike, and then Sammy and Mike should be performing w/ whomever in the background.
Velvet should pull out of the show in protest!
Eddie Veder (who is anti-corporate greed in music and is inducting REM) and Michael Stripe better say something in protest!
If they don't I will lose all respect for them.
When GNR is inducted, if Axl doesn't want to show up I'd want the boys w/ any other singer to get up at THEIR OWN INDUCTION and perform THEIR OWN SONGS, THEIR OWN ARTISTIC CREATIONS.
I wouldn't want Jet invited to do a GNR melody while Slash watched from his chair like a good little boy, a good little sheep, a good little rock star. Itching to get up and play. What BS!
Good for you Diamond Dave for boycotting in protest! My top hat off to you, son!

Eddie, good luck in rehab.
But notice how he is always preventing things from happening and then getting pity.
See a pattern here?

Why don't you give Jack Nicholson an Oscar and then not let him go up and accept it. Send DiCaprio up there instead.

To induct someone to your Hall Of Fame is to invite them to accept the award and to perform. Period. The two should never be severed. And why? For rating's sake?

Diamond Dave was a huge star in 1984. Him up there doing "Panama" with whomever in the background would bring us back to that time. Having a cover band do it does not celebrate the music that is being honored.
Dave's voice was on those first 6 albums and is unique as a fingerprint.
The surviving artists should perform their own songs - whether certain members are dead, in rehab, or at home hiding and throwing temper tantrums.

DLR Not In The Building

Roth not allowed to perform at gala honoring the band

This business went in the crapper when the executives started believing they were bigger than the acts, that the audience was interested in THEM, not the performers.

And why be interested in the acts, they were just tools of the machine. Picked on their looks, singing the songs of hacks, the music lost its soul, its religion, its sense of theatre, its VAUDEVILLE HISTORY!

Van Halen was no James Cameron production, no slick artifice, it was just four guys from Pasadena working their way up from beer parties to the TOP, testing limits, getting better every step of the way.

We all agree Eddie Van Halen is a genius, but without David Lee Roth Van Halen never would have broken through. Sammy may have a better voice, I love "Best Of Both Worlds", but without DLR there IS NO Van Halen, no notice. A band without a frontman is…the NICE?

You need a singer, someone who can enrapture the audience, someone who can make the audience pay attention. That person in Van Halen’s case was David Lee Roth. Better David Lee Roth with ANYBODY behind him than ANYBODY in Velvet Revolver or Audioslave (is there a difference, aren’t both made up of has-beens who can’t work on their own?)

Stunningly, David Lee Roth can still work on his own. Granted, to an ever-dwindling audience. But people still want to be touched. Want to remember when they were in high school, and DIDN’T GIVE A FUCK! Van Halen was music for people enmeshed in the system who wanted a WAY OUT! That’s what music used to provide. Back when it was a culture of notes, not pricks with $5,000 suits and multiple assistants.

This is the last nail in the coffin for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. This is the final joke. When you don’t even let the INDUCTEES perform.

Why not? Because it’s on TELEVISION? Doesn’t that prove the point? That when you start worrying about the audience rather than the music you’ve lost the thread?

Back when Van Halen reigned, the ultimate goal was to get backstage. To hang with the band, whether male or female. It not only made your night, but maybe your life. To get that close. To the talented who played by their own rules.

That’s what the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony was. A private party. That the public LONGED to attend. Back when there was no question the inductees were legends.

An edited show for VH1 was bad enough. A live broadcast? Why? Is this any different from the Paris Hilton sex tape? A staged event, distributed for publicity?

The R&RHOF needs cash. It needs to perpetuate itself. When it’s the MUSIC that’s important, that will outlive this lame organization run by men and women who never had the adoration of tens of thousands of fans, who never held them in the palm of their hands, who never knew the POWER of being a star.

You can be rich, but that doesn’t make you a star.

And the biggest star amongst this year’s inductees has now been refused the right to perform at his own party. Isn’t that like not allowing the President to attend his own inauguration?

Let every table at the Waldorf-Astoria be adorned with a bowl of brown M&M’s. And when it comes time for Van Halen to be inducted, let everybody THROW THEM AT THE DAIS!

That’s the rock and roll spirit. Throwing out decorum, knowing that a big star plays by his OWN RULES!

If only the pricks who made this decision had one iota of David Lee Roth’s star power. If only they realized they’re what’s killing not only the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but the record business too.

If Michael Stipe had any balls he’d refuse to attend unless DLR could come and perform too. What, Paul Shaffer gets to play all these years but David Lee Roth CAN’T?

You DLR lovers have to stop being so pathetic over DLR and Eddie getting back together it hasn't happened and it won't happen.

Even the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame doesn't want DLR around, he's like the herpes, he won't go away and there's no cure to get rid of him.

They'll get inducted and that will be it for Van Halen.

They'll go down the same path as other bands that are done.

Only sell BMG greatest hits CD's at Walmart.

Eddie had the world by the balls in 1996 with Balance at the top of the charts and most of the songs being played on the radio or in heavey rotation on MTV had another sound track in a movie Twister and videos on the way into the Twister theme at Universal.

He gave it all up for the bottle and it will never be the same again.

Oh yeah wether you like it or not on this post, Velvet Revoler and the other fans all over the USA and the World love Van Halen
and love DLR and Sammy Hagar equally.

Unfortunately DLR proved why he isn't and hasn't been part of Van Halen for the past 23 years.

No band (at least I hope) was influenced by the god awful Hagar era cd's) The Hagar era of Van Halen was awful, but surely they could find a song better than runaround.. I will not be tuning into this at all. I hope Eddie gets healthy, they bring back Michael Anthony and do a full on reunion tour next year. That would be awesome.
