BOSTON Singer's Suicide Note: 'I Am A Lonely Soul' - Mar. 16, 2007
Katharine Webster of The Associated Press reports:

Brad Delp, the lead singer for the band BOSTON who killed himself last week, left behind a note in which he called himself "a lonely soul," according to police reports released Thursday.

Toxicology tests by the state medical examiner's office showed that Delp committed suicide by carbon monoxide poisoning. Police said Delp had sealed himself inside a bathroom with two charcoal grills sometime between 11:30 p.m. March 8 and the next afternoon, when he was found by fiancée Pamela Sullivan.

Sullivan told police that Delp "had been depressed for some time, feeling emotional (and) bad about himself," according to the reports.

He was found on the floor of the bathroom, his head on a pillow and a note paper-clipped to the neck of his shirt.

"Mr. Brad Delp. J'ai une ame solitaire. I am a lonely soul," it read.

Sullivan called police after noticing a dryer vent tube connected to the exhaust pipe of Delp's car. In the garage, police found a note taped to the door leading into the house.

"To whoever finds this I have hopefully committed suicide. Plan B was to asphyxiate myself in my car."

In a third note on a door at the top of the stairs, Delp cautioned that there was carbon monoxide inside.

"I take complete and sole responsibility for my present situation. I have lost my desire to live," he wrote. The note also included instructions on how to contact his fiancée. There was a picture of Delp and Sullivan in the bathroom.

"Unfortunately she is totally unaware of what I have done," the note said.

I'm surprised so much of the notes was released to the public. Usually they keep the contents of the suicidal notes from the public...

Still, a damn shame...he was getting married, had children, had tons of fans and respect for his work, financial success...yet he still felt tired of living...

No disrespect to Brad Delp. Great singer. But, 3 suicide notes, multiple back up plans and a comment that had to state the fiancée was unaware...plus all of this via a public release on Blabbermouth... Personally, I would question the fiancée a little more. Maybe I am just too cynical. Either way, a big loss to the music world. RIP Brad.

Though this was extremely sad and depressing to read and think about, I think it also should be interpreted in another sense.

We as people and human beings, should all realize that for one moment that life is a very precious thing. One day we will all leave this earth and pass on. It's something that the living people still here never like to deal with and can't totally comprehend and understand it, but it's very true. Take a second to reflect on your life and be greatfull for what we have, and the lives we have lived up to this point. Appreciate other people around you, and take a moment to let them know....

Depression can take everything away from you no matter who you are, what you have, and what your are. Here's an unfortunate example... Remember, there are no second chances in this life once you've made that ultimate choice....

I give nothing but my sheer and utter sympathy to his family, friends, fiancee, fans and anyone else that knew and loved this man. The world has lost a great musician and even a better person!

R.I.P Brad!

Well said. How many times have you looked back on life and said, "Man, if I could go back I woulda done things like this." Well it sucks and when you die and are reviewing your life it'll be like, "Man, now I can't do any of that shit at all cuz I'm dead."

They say youth is wasted on the young, well I say life is wasted on the living. Make it good, people.

Although I think suicide is a dumb and pathetic coward's way to go, it was his life to end. It really sucks how depression can change someone.

You kids complaining about the moron ranting about atheism should just chill. It was only one idiot, not "all this animosity." He's not even going to read it so forget him.

Sail on, on a distant highway
I've got to keep on chasin' a dream
I've gotta be on my way
Wish there was something I could say.

Well I'm takin' my time, I'm just movin' on
You'll forget about me after I've been gone
And I take what I find, I don't want no more
It's just outside of your front door.

It's been such a long time. It's been such a long time.

Well I get so lonely when I am without you
But in my mind, deep in my mind,
I can't forget about you
Good times, and faces that remind me
I'm tryin' to forget your name and leave it all behind me
You're comin' back to find me.

Well I'm takin' my time, I'm just movin' on

Hell, Boston are held as "the greatest band of all time" on Aqua Teen Hunger Force, according to Carl...lol...

Boston has always been an under rated band in my opinion, kind of like Rush. They have a horde of fans, but were never really considered a household name. Their albums always sounded way ahead of their time, even today the songs are still very relevant.

Brad's golden voice will most definately be missed. Hopefully Tom and the rest of the band will be able to bounce back from this tragedy and continue pumping out the high quality music us fans have been enjoying for years.

Rest in peace Brad, and thank you for all the smiles your music has given me over the years.

Its not a personality weakness, its not a character flaw, and its definitely not "the pussy's way out". People who commit suicide are not selfish and they're not disregarding the feelings of those who love them. Depression is a real illness that left untreated, can cause brain damage. ..can relate to why he did what he did. I have felt that pain...I know what it's like to feel like the world and those I love are better off without me. It is a bad place to be emotionally, spiritually...No matter how much joy one brings to others (in Brad's case, millions) the agony of what finally drives people to check themselves out of this world outweighs all the good.

Money, fame, love, success means nothing...I don't know what Money fame and success are like, but I know what it's like to love, and I know what kind of pain brings a person to self-destruction. The only thing that's kept me willing to get kicked in the teeth by Life (on an all-too-regular basis) is the fact that I have a wife, child and countless furry friends who need me on duty to keep them out of harm's way. And there's always something to hang around for that I would really like to see (reunions of KISS['96-'97!], Iron Maiden, Judas Priest come to mind) Life is hard, especially if you feel too much...those who can't bear the pain anymore,well... I try not to feel so much, but I am too compassionate. I still manage to get out of bed though.

To those of you who find it easy to criticize someone who does succumb to the pain:
I hope you never get a taste of it yourselves... It is an understanding that you don't want, because it will color your life forever and you will feel its shadow from time to time. I only pray that I can be there to prevent someone from doing it to themselves. It's hard to see the signs. Of course there were alot of songs that could clue us all in, in hindsight.
I am so sad.
Brad, I trust you're in a better place...we'll miss you.

3/16/2007 11:09:00 AM

I only heard this afternoon [March 15, 2006], to my great shock and sorrow, that Brad Delp's death was a suicide.
While I've never considered myself a fan of Boston, I wholeheartedly believe that Brad Delp was ( and should always be) one among the Pantheon of rock singers. There is no question in my mind that he was one of the top five vocalists ever to propagate this form of music. He certainly exists in that highest echelon, occupied by no less visionary heroes than Freddy Mercury, Ronnie James Dio, and, ( our beloved Metal God ) Rob Halford.
Indeed he may have merited particular honor for singing the way he did so far back in history when there was no one in this genre of music who prominently demonstrated the potential of the male voice to perform with such beauty, technical prowess, and, ultimately, such realized ambitiousness such as to set so high a standard for the rest of the vocalists to aspire to reach.
This humble, and by all descriptions, modest to a fault, erstwhile blue-collar appliance technician, was nothing short of groundbreaking in his innovative performance of rock vocals at heights to which they had never remotely approached !
Sadly, even in the recent eulogies of his life, the grandeur of his talent has been all too crudely understated - just as it was in the heyday of his career.

Finally, I would like to exclaim that those on this site who have alluded to suicide as being weak or cowardly only reveal their own shallowness or, perhaps, their insecurity with the issues of suffering and death. Any person who has actually had the courage to honestly consider how/why someone could actually take his/her own life would surely arrive at the conclusion that suicide ( although usually misguided ) is a response to the experience of profoundly unbearable suffering, and again, while it is usually irrational, is an act of extreme courage and confidence in view of the subjective experience of the utterly tortured victim.
Those who dare: ought to consider the depth of resolve and the desperate state of suffering which would be necessary to compel a person to purposefully take action to end his/her life - everything he/she knows to be real - in preference for some unknowable, oblivious alternative of non-existence.
I might have hoped that within this cohort of metal listeners, whom I assumed would be more in touch with the ( dark and potentially tragic )extremes of human experience, there would be more understanding and empathy for someone who had committed suicide.
Ultimately, I wish to say that Brad Delp was a gift to the human race. Obviously he was a gift and privilege to behold insofar as he was a great musician. But also, based on the information I have garnered since his death, he was a gentle, sincere, and decent human being.
Good-Bye Brad Delp ! You didn't deserve to suffer and die as you did !

Rest in Peace !

Suicide takes guts... You are brave to take your own life.
Nothing weak about that!

Infact, It is the exact opposite!!!!

Analogy:
That is about like people that hide in the closet...
(many metal fans)
see the movie: "American Beauty" for what im getting at.
and
they call straight people "gay" all the time...
I have been called "gay" on this very site over 500 times.
Just because I love Axl Rose and Glam music don't make me "gay", and it never will!

The word "Gay" is about like the words "i love you" , they get thrown around so much...it is not even real anymore.
Just a trendy word now.

Happiness is not a simple formula, but one of the basic elements is having something to do--something that gives you a sense of purpose and makes you feel "fulfilled." What was there in Brad Delp's life these days that would give him that? --particularly when compared to the great heights of achievement that he reached thirty years ago?

The unpleasant truth: If Boston would have had some kind of real continuity, and had not descended into nothingness creatively, then Brad Delp would still be alive. This sad story is as much a result of Tom Scholtz's neurosis as it is Delp's depression. If Scholtz had continued to make rock records, instead of ballad compilations and pathetic pop, then Boston would still be a huge force in music, and Brad Delp would be alive right now... feelin' satisfied.

Am I the only one who finds the cirumstances of Brad's death, as here described, to be a little strange? I'm not a detective, but "my fiancee' had nothing to do with it" in a suicide note? A "Plan B" way to asphyxiate yourself (not that CO poisoning is actually asphyxiation, which is CO2 poisoning)? Did he really speak French that poorly that he couldn't write a simple sentence correctly? And in a day and age when just about anybody connected to a classic rock group can sell that connection and play county fairs around the country for the same income as a mid-career accountant, things don't add up. Being lonely when you're set to get married??? Maybe if his wife had left him and got 100% time with the kids I could buy that.

Investigate the bitch!<<<<

Just a bit harsh dont ya think? If they do and she were to be found not guilty is she still a bitch?

The note didn't say "my fiancee had nothing to do with this" ... good fucking God, dude. It gave instructions on how to contact her in case she wasn't the one that discovered him. "... unfortunately she is unaware of what I have done ..." is apparently what it said, as in she wasn't around and he didn't call to tell her what he was planning to do. The guy also left notes warning people that carbon monoxide would be in the air and telling them where to find his cat locked away in another part of the house. Basically it seems he wanted to try and make sure that he was the only one that suffered (aside from the emotional suffering ...) from his actions. Also seems like it was something he had been seriously considering for a long time (no pun intended) and decided "okay, today's the day."

As for this:
Did he really speak French that poorly that he couldn't write a simple sentence correctly?<<<<
Could you? I couldn't, millions of people couldn't. Who's to say that Brad spoke French at all???? Talk about reaching .....
