METALLICA Guitarist HAMMETT Says New Material Has 'Middle Eastern' Vibe
- Mar. 16, 2007
|
|
|
METALLICA started recording its ninth studio LP in Los Angeles this week. According to the band's site, this is the first time METALLICA has recorded outside of the Bay Area since they spent "an eternity" at One on One Studios recording their 1991 self-titled release, popularly known as The Black Album.
In the latest issue of the METALLICA Club (the group's official fan club) members-only magazine "So What!", guitarist Kirk Hammett was asked if there are any common musical themes running through the 14 songs the band is recording for its new effort. "There is a really unusual theme that's working its way into the music," he replied. "I'm not really sure how to react to it. Maybe it's someone else trying to tell us that we should react to it, but a lot of the music has an eastern harmonic flair to it, a harmonic minor flair to it, and when I say harmonic minor, that could be construed as like eastern sounding or Middle Eastern sounding or maybe Arabic? I don't know if it's just the zeitgeist, a sign of the times, or maybe because like, you know, Middle Eastern culture is so prevalent, or maybe the negative things about Middle Eastern culture. Maybe artists are conscious, just want to shine light on the positive aspects of Middle Eastern culture, i.e. the music. But there's passages that sound, that use harmonic minor and dominant, and those sounds are distinctly Arabic sounding or Middle Eastern sounding, and you hear them in all the songs. At the less likely times, all of a sudden they'll turn a corner and there we are, smack, right dab there in Syria or Iraq, as far as culture is concerned. We're playing notes that were played, have been played for thousands of years, that aren't born in western culture, and it's just a trip to see. And maybe I'm the first to really vocalize it, but it's just there."
Unlike the troubled, turbulent sessions for the band's last album, 2003's "St. Anger", drummer Lars Ulrich told Launch that pre-production for the new effort had a whole different vibe. "It's frighteningly tame (laughs)," he said. "The four of us show up and we hang out and we have a great time, and there are no psychiatrists in sweaters, there are no film crews, it's very much like it used to be. It's pretty mellow around here. All that 'St. Anger' stuff seems like a movie (laughs)."
The group plans to work in the studio until early June, take a break for its European tour, then finish recording in August. As for whether METALLICA will release the new album in 2007, Ulrich said, "I'd like to try and get it out this year, I hope we can get it out this year. If it doesn't come out this year, then it will be out at the very beginning of next year."

some of their earlier stuff had that vibe too - like the unforgiven. might be a good thing.
i'm sure no one expects anything great from this band. i stopped hoping ever since kirk stated on some kind of monster how he has no interest in playing classical solos anymore.
who knows, maybe they'll stop being lazy and put the work into making good albums again. i personally think they should go solo. free from any record labels and just control everything they do. too many old farts have a say in what the albums should sound like.

CHIMAIRA.
Have you noticed how Rob's guitar playing is straight-up metalcore, till he welds onto this a rather obvioss 'arabic' passage to some of his songs? Not like Nile wher the the Arabic vibe is subtle and throughout. I think this is gonna be artificially welded-on like Chimaira

1. regarding the "middle-eastern" vibe:
a lot of metal uses this scale; it's nothing to worry about. it doesn't mean that the album will sound like something you'd hear in a falaffel house.
2. why the fuck can't they release the CD they're recording NOW, in 2007? how fucking long does it take to record, mix, master and market?
can you imagine you're fave underground band saying, we're recording in March but we don't know if we'll release it for another year.
???
cheers.

Maybe he meant that they're playing in a harmonic minor key in some songs? Because most people would get it! I'm starting to question their musical knowledge after this. Come on, middle eastern vibe? I'm pretty sure that he doesn't mean that cars are exploding to the music.

oh and what a dumbass....if he thinks he's the first person to use the harmonic minor scale, he's completely wrong. haha and a harmonic minor scale doesn't necessarily mean that you're celebrating the middle eastern culture, I mean come on! look at Yngwie Malmsteen...he's as white as can be and still uses the harmonic scale....maybe we AMERICANIZE IT! Yeah! one more thing to piss them off.

They better not wait too long to release this CD. Because, If they think they're going to record a bunch of demos between now and the summer and then take a break to go tour Europe from June to September and those demos aren't going to be leaked all over the internet, They're nuts.
The past couple of years the release dates for alot of CD's have had to get moved up because so many of the songs were available for free on Limewire, Kazaa or one of the many other file sharing networks.

Speaking of things that should not be...
Quoted from the interview : "We're playing notes that were played, have been played for thousands of years."
Then you said : "oh and what a dumbass....if he thinks he's the first person to use the harmonic minor scale, he's completely wrong."
Are you a Syrian reading these articles through Bablefish or something? How did you manage to understand the complete opposite of what he said? Was it just for the sense of belonging that comes with joining Blabbermouthers into bashing Metallica?

Second of all to put a stop to the whole metallica vs slayer thing (true to your roots vs moving on) it is realy one question: do you put out music you want to hear or what your fans want to hear? Think about it.

Metallica is a fearless band that never lied to themselves and never played it safe...if they were sell-outs they would have released The Black Album over and over again...just because it isn't as good as the stuff that makes them Metallica doesn't mean their new shit is easy to listen to pop rock...when is the last time anyone hear has actually listened to Load? Load is just a weird ass fucking album that no one seems to agree on, same with St. Anger...if they were sell-outs wouldn't they be making the music EVERYONE wants them to make? No they are not sell-outs they are just a frustrating band that keeps giving its fans Pizza when they want Crack...sure the pizza is made well, it works as a pizza but when you want crack you want fucking crack and MAster Of PUPPETS is CRACK Load is Pizza...I think I've made some sense here today

When I first heard "Whenever I May Roam" I was expecting the video for that song to be shot in the desert in the same vibe as "Seasons In The Abyss" although I like the videos for both songs.
And whatever vibe Metallica puts in their new album is good as long as it isn't the "suck" vibe. That's been a bit too common in their last few albums lately.

According to the stupid people here you have to play it safe your whole career to not be a Sell-out.
Metallica have never played it safe, because they listen to themselves, not "what people want". Thats true integrety. If they ever was sellout they would have released The black album over and over again.
So fucking what if everything isnt metal, thats not what its about here. People are talking about whats sellout and not. And to be a true artist is to do what they fuck you feel like, and Metallica has always done that, its different, it´s taking chances. Something a band like Slayer would never have the balls to do.
People are just angry cause Metallica isnt their little backpocket thrash metal band anymore. Thats fine, feel some anger about that but what i think is total bullshit when you are talking about artist integrety is how you rip on a band that has always evolved, taken hits and most importantly done what the fuck the want to do without listening to others.
Stygianking as usual makes a fool out of himself, he says 99% wants the old Metallica back, well if Metallica did what others wanted them to do ( Sell out) that would be true definition of selling out, because selling out is when you listen to others instead of yourself.
If you like the music or not is a whole different thing though, you can hate the new Metallica music but to use the old tired sellout excuse is just Pathetic.

Well you are a perfect example of what I am talking about. It is apparent that your use of the english language is limited so I will try and speak in terms that you can understand. Your arguments are silly and show a lack of success on your part and/or a lack of knowledge. I am leaning on the and rather then the or.....Anyways.....I referred to the people that I know like you that are unsuccessful and for some reason look down on success of others. People that are not successful are usually those that do not change or try new things. I feel extremely lucky and fortunate that at 34 I live the life I have and cant help but look back on people who at one time ripped on me for cutting my hair, dressing nicer and opening my mind allowing myself to grow up to be successfull yet they stay the same. They sit in a bar, smoke weed and act like we did when we were kids. I pointed that out to show that if you dont change you get left behind whether it is in music or life in general. Sure Metallica changed their style. So what, it is still great music. That genre has been played out over and over. After Justice what was left? I remember them never wanting to make a video and the feeling I had after the One video and seeing a picture of Metallica on a cheerleaders locker. I was upset, but I was also what 17 or whatever? Have you read many recent Metallica set lists? Mostly old school stuff being played. The dumbest comment of many you made was the one where you stated that metal is about art and experimenting, being creative.....Not MTV.....Naturally you can see why I at least laughed at that one. Metallica is the most experimental and creative metal band of all time. There is not one person on this board that can guess what the next Metallica is going to sound like. I can pick up my guitar and play pretty much the next Megadeth, Slayer, AC/DC and any other bands CDS based on what they did their past every album.

I do know what is Kirk's talking about ;) do you ever heard of the thrash metal band Evile from UK? they have some "middle eastern vibe" to! so this means that Metallica is going to back to thrash metal again! and of course, alot of metal bands do have some "middle eastern vibe" in their music, duh...

I agree with many of your posts, and I am glad to see that I am not the only one trying to stand up for Metallica. I also listen to alot of music that I wouldnt "tolerate" when i was 16 years old.
One thing I hafto say to "fearlessgeneral", you come off like a person who is really full of himself with SOME of the things you say. I am happy for you that you are happy with your life, but some of the things you say makes you come off like a "pompus ass", and that is just fuel for the bashers.

Growing up I understand, but it is really like this. If you buy a pepsi, you expect that kind of pepsi taste, if you buy a Metallica record you expect that Metallica sound, if your growing up and dont feel it anymore, change your name to whatever and release it. Do not fool your followers with this shit they have been putting out since 1991. No excuses for it......Exodus, Testament, Slayer and alot of other 80s metal bands didnt wuss out like Metallica. Megadeth did, and Dave went on record saying he make some mistakes, NOW THAT IS HONEST! Metallica is anything but honest, its just a slap in the face to us.

"I remember them never wanting to make a video and the feeling I had after the One video and seeing a picture of Metallica on a cheerleaders locker."
I remember that too. I got into them after MOP, and their anti-video stance was one of the things they were most known for back then. A lot of fans felt really betrayed when AJFA came out - not just because they made the video for "One", but also because "One" was a bit too soft and radio friendly. I still skip that song most of the time - the rest of the album is amazing though. I have an old RIP magazine from '89 where Lars says the following...
"One of the main things the "One" video did for us was show us how video isn't actually the evil Satan we might have thought it to be."
I remember thinking how can you just blow off everything you said before? Oh well, I guess we were wrong? All of a sudden you had people (like cheerleaders) who were saying they liked Metallica. Would the black album have been so successful if the world hadn't already known about the band because of the exposure from the "One" video? Maybe it really was the evil Satan after all.
I'm still a fan, despite all the ups and downs. Load is probably my favorite album and although I was disappointed in St. Anger at the time I like it now. I heard Sabbath Bloody Sabbath earlier today and I thought there was a part of that song that reminded me of something off St. Anger, which was kind of cool. I think maybe in time that album will get a bit more respect.
The new stuff will be great, but maybe it won't appeal to everyone - especially people who have really specific expectations. Maybe it's best to try to stay open-minded...

Why is everybody freakin out about his use of the harmonic minor scale? Look at Master of Puppets, the entire thing is pretty much based around that scale. And Justice For All is almost entirely chromatic. It seems like all the non musical terds think that addin a major 7th to a minor scale is all of a sudden a bad thing, like nobody has done that before. Who listens to Master of Puppets and says " Wow, there use of the E minor scale is fantastic, and their incorporation of the E phyrigian scale and diminished scales show their amazing taste!" Do you want to know why people use these scales? Its because theyre easy to play on guitar! Cuz they sound cool! Listen to any band from that era. Exodus, Slayer Megadeth, Cacophony, Testament, etc. They all play the same shit!! Blabbermouth=poseur=myself=crap

I never found that the Harmonic Minor scale sounded very middle eastern. It was used in european classical music. If i'm not mistaken, the diminished scale is the one utilized by middle eastern music. But..... at least the assclown isn't comparing the new record to Meshuggah this time.

Why is it cool to hate Metallica anyway? They are the only band. Only band. Only band that sells a million plus a year on albums they recorded over 25 years ago. Master of Puppets, till this day, has not been matched. No contest the best thrash/heavy metal album to come from the US in 25 years. That album is perfection.
I see your point

It really doesnt, its more of a spanish vide, really, youre exactly right. Comparing Metallica to Meshuggah is retarded, so whomever suggested that has never listened to Metallica. Or Meshuggah. I work at Best Buy, and I was blasting Metallica in the warehouse, and some youngin told me that Metallica was crap, and that I should turn it off. And im not that old, im 23, but Metallica was the first band that I listened to that got me into this kinda music. Metallica is prerequisite for calling yourself a heavy metal fan. Morbid Angel is prerequisite for calling yourself a deathmetal fan. I'm slosched!

I remember reading an article with Kirk after the black album saying that then next ablum will be a return to Kill 'em all. What happend? LOAD. If you do not think they sold out, just watch the video for One and then the video for Until it Sleeps.
Speaking of cheerleaders, I knew something was wrong when I heard a jock singing Enter Sandman and saying how cool Metallica was. They fucking suck.
Speaking of Pepsi, Metallica is more like flat Tab.

What is wrong now with trying to make a little money off of their success? Look, people can say whatever thay want to say, but the reason people get into the music business is to become wealthy and famous. People will lie and say its for " the love of the music" or whatever bullshit excuse. Did you see a year in the life of...? They listened to that cock blast Bob Rock and that singlehandedly ruined their careers (or made them better, whichever you prefer). You know what? I know what it is. You guy wish Peter Dolving was on here more often. More of his mindless yammering about nothin would please the minldess herds. Lulling them to sleep.

the captain of the high school football team, the same one who used to beat up the metalheads in school, became "the biggest Metallica fan"(his words, not mine)when the Black Album came out, even though he thought Lars was the singer!!!!
Same thing when I saw them on the Black Album tour......3 early to mid teens(I was 17), looked confused when Metallica opened up with Fight Fire With Fire.....so they turned around and asked "what song is this??" So we told them and they asked is this off of Justice? Nope...."well, don't Metallica only have 2 albums?" Nope....
I might give this album a chance......won't buy it first day(my cousin will buy it and either give it to me to keep or will let me borrow it to give it a quick preview). But after hearing how they played the entire M.O.P. album flawlessly, they might just recapture that fire they had in the studio(plus Rick Rubin is better than Bob Rock).
2007/2008.....the rebirth of Metallica????? I hope so!!!

i see ac/dc write similar sounding albums time after time and they are in the hall of fame with all credibilty intact.they never went alternative, glammy, progressive or nu-metalish.let there be rock in 1977 sounds as good as the razors edge in 1990 and the album stiff upper lip in 2000.all are very similar.now imagine how far metallica would've gotten doing like ac/dc did.they probably would've come out better doing it like ac/dc instead of changing into people and trend pleasers.here is what metallica should've done....ac/dc has had two or three albums since the 90's started about once every 5 or 6 years.this is what metallica shouldve done.after black album in '91 they should've waited until around 96 or 97 and then did another metal album instead of the grungy load and reload.then in 2001 or 2002 come back again with another album similar to the black album.then right about now in 2006 or 2007 they could've went back to their roots and had a master of puppets sounding release with rick rubin at the helm.the load, reload,s&m,garage and st. anger stuff would've never happened and they would've been huger than they are now with a couple releases already out since the black album and this album heralding a return to the thrash sound.all without losing the original fanbase they would've never lost.

On Metallica: Sounds like Kirk is getting into the George Harrison, Jimmy Page, phrygian scale thing with scintars and shit. It's never been done better than Nigel Tuffnel did it with Spinal Tap on Flower People, however....
On AC/DC: AC/DC helped invent metal on 'Let There Be Rock' and 'PowerAge.' Metal is powerchord riffarama and even though AC/DC did it with the Chuck Berry 2 and 4 time blues basic in rock, it IS metal. The last time I heard AC/DC actually make metal music was on the two songs Furer and Ballbreaker, from the BB album. I wish they would embrace that legacy, because it is an honor to AC/DC.

Maybe when you kids actually grow up you will see that change is part of evolving as a person and realize these guys are not 20 years old anymore. Bands like slayer get old QUICK...releasing the same shit every album is a sign of fear of losing your past and not being evolved enough to do something different.

I am content knowing that this band and I have had great times. Realize that they will NEVER do that again and endless waves of negativity will only make them piss you off even more.
Respect them for what they gave you in the first place and know the more you whine, the more you're all headed for disappointment.

Fuel 2 x 4 Aint my Bitch Prince Charming The Outlaw Torn Slither
THese songs are pretty good and have a huge Ozzy era Black Sabbath influence.
Changing their logo and announcing that "Metal is Dead" is what really pissed me off the most about metallica.
Metallica should have never sold out and changed their logo and image. This is what killed them in my opinion. and Lars is and Kirk are such pussies

Thank you. That scale IS Eastern European. The scale was originally used by monks in order to resolve minor chants on a major chord by augmenting the sixth.
Middle Eastern music uses a 24 note scale.
