Ozzy and his wife Sharon created a stir back in February when they revealed Ozzfest would be a sponsor-driven, free event, and acts would be asked to play without being paid. Sharon Osbourne said during a press conference that doing the tour like this was unprecedented: "We're doing 25 shows across America, and it's the first time that actually a summer festival tour has gone out free. There's been millions of free one-off shows, but this is gonna be a 25-city tour. And we're having our second stage, as usual, and everything goes as normal, except it's free."

Ozzfest will utilize sponsors to offset the costs of producing and running the festival. To gain entry into the event, fans will go to Ozzfest.com or LiveNation.com to find links that will direct them to special sponsor sites where tickets can be secured. More details regarding the process are forthcoming.

Sharon said that rising artist fees would have forced Ozzfest organizers to raise ticket prices this year. While smaller acts have traditionally not received a fee, Sharon insisted that no one is getting paid this time: "We are giving people a stage, and we're giving them a chance to play in front of thousands of people. And we're giving them the chance on days off, they can go work wherever they wanna work, gig wherever they wanna gig. They can even play Ozzfest and then go off that night and do another gig, 'cause we start music from noon. But they can come, they can sell their merchandise, they can sell their music. But it's free. We're not paying anyone."

Sharon said that the tour already had "bands committed," adding, "We know there aren't any major headlining acts that would tour all summer for nothing, but we're confident we can turn some of the genre's biggest bands on to what we're doing and have them come out to play a date or two."

In a prepared statement, Sharon also said that the reason for doing the tour this way was simple: "We're reaching the same point we did years ago when kids no longer wanted to pay for overpriced CDs. As a result, they found alternative ways of getting music. That's what's happening with summer touring in this country, it's out-pricing itself. We started this and we want to keep it and we want to make it bigger and bigger each year by getting bigger sponsors to be involved with the festival and underwriting the festival."

Video footage of the news conference held February 6 by Ozzy and Sharon to announce that Ozzy will stage this year's Ozzfest as a first-of-its kind free event has been posted online at this location (Windows Media).

That's actually an interesting lineup thus far. Lamb of God, Daath, Nile and 3 Inches of Blood is all stuff that I can get into, especially Lamb of God and Nile. Maybe I'll pick up a bucket of KFC and pay a visit to the New England Dodge Music Theatre on August 18. I'll be the one in the Hank Williams World Tour 1949 t-shirt!

"Does anyone know why they dont bring Ozzfest to Canada or even Europe?"

Because the european festivals are bigger - with more and better bands and a few of them are really big (i guess Nile was also in Wacken or With Full Force???). The only point wich makes ozzfest enchanting is that the show is for free.

This is already looking better than last years piss poor lineup. At least Ozzy is playing all the shows and it is going to be cool to see Nile and 3 Inches of Blood play Ozzfest. Lamb of God and Hatebreed always put on a brutal set too. It would be cool if they got a black metal band like Satyricon. Dimmu is doing a full US tour, what about Cradle of Filth. That would be cool.

Why is Lordi on mainstage ? It's challenging to even find one of their albums in the US . I mean , im not complaining or anything , i just find it weird .

Kind of lame bands on the list this year , but its not as bad as last year , with that said , im still going .

"I might go to Ozzfest now just to say that I saw them on Ozzfest."

Why? Is seeing them at Ozzfest something special?

Saw them support Maiden in California last year. Not my thing, but I understand why people like them. More power to ya.

I would only go Ozzfest if Machine Men are added to the bill. I'd walk in, see them, walk out without buying a single thing related to Ozzfest.

I really don't see what the problem is. The show is fucking free. Why is it that everytime Ozzfest is mentioned someone bitches and complains to no end. Ok so water and beer prices MIGHT get jacked up, but by how much? I don't have a problem paying a few extra dollars here and there to see a show especially when I didn't just drop $75 for a ticket. If you like even one band on this bill then just go. Deal with the assholes and children running around, see the band you wanna see and leave. And worse comes to worse it's a free Ozzy show.

Let me guess, BLS plays ozzfest again then goes on their fall US tour with 2 bands who also played ozzfest just like last year and the year before, etc. And does it seem that Hatebreed is on just about every year? Maybe they're being groomed to be the new BLS for future ozzfests. Sure I'll get my "free" tix, LoG, Nile and Mondo are great choices but I'll wait to see what Gigantour and SOTU have to offer if anything.
