JUDAS PRIEST Guitarist Guitarist Addresses RIAA And Internet Royalties Increase - Mar. 25, 2007
"The Classic Metal Show" recently interviewed legendary JUDAS PRIEST guitarist K.K. Downing about a number of topics, one which was the proposed raise of royalty rates by the RIAA that would, in essence, put Internet radio out of business. Downing stated that he found the proposed royalty rates to be "just ridiculous," and admitted that he's never received a check from the RIAA for royalties allegedly collected in his name by the organization. An excerpt from the conversation follows:

The Classic Metal Show: There's kind of a battle raging here in the United States about Internet radio. I wanted to get your take on that. With the advent of the Internet and the popularity of Internet radio, do you think that it has helped or hurt JUDAS PRIEST in getting promotion and awareness out there?

K.K. Downing: Well, as far as I'm concerned, any radio is great radio. If it hadn't been for radio, JUDAS PRIEST certainly wouldn't be where we are today, and that is a fact.

The Classic Metal Show: Currently here in the U.S., there's a controversy raging about the royalty fees that Internet radio may be required to pay. The RIAA…are you familiar with the RIAA at all?

K.K. Downing: No, not really.

The Classic Metal Show: The Record Industry Association of America. They're going after Internet radio stations to pay a very high royalty rate in order to broadcast copyrighted music. Basically, just to give you the gist of it, in a year's time at the royalty rate they are asking, an Internet radio station that, say, serves 1,000 listeners 365 days a year, the royalty rate that they would have to pay in order to stay in business would equate to about $200,000 a year.

K.K. Downing: Well, that's just ridiculous. That just doesn't stack up, as you say. That just doesn't equate. What's the equation? Who put that together? That's obviously silly.

The Classic Metal Show: Have you ever received a check from the RIAA, who's supposed out there representing you and JUDAS PRIEST?

K.K. Downing: No!

The Classic Metal Show: I didn't think so.

K.K. Downing: At least not to my knowledge. I've never heard of it.

The Classic Metal Show: Well, that's what I wanted to know, because guys like "The Classic Metal Show" will be put out of business if that goes into effect.

K.K. Downing: Well, that's obviously the last thing that we want, and if there's anything we can do to help, let us know.

It's obvious KK never got a royalty check from the RIAA, they're merely an association which represent the record companies (such as Sony and CBS) which have written KK many a check!!

You know why none of these bands have received a check? probably because all of the "internet money" the RIAA recieves is going directly to the millions of dollars in legal fees that they are spending going after a 14 year old kid on his parents computer.

COMMENT | That's because

The record companies are supposed to distribute these fees, and they don't! They keep it so they can re-claim thier lost profits from downloading. Maybe we need to get lawsuits going againt them for collecting fees under false pretences???

That's not such a bad idea. The RIAA and the recording industry are the scum of the earth. Absolutely the worst persons in the world. They're price gouging assholes and I hope that they go under.

Even Metallica doesn't get checks from RIAA, lol, all RIAA checks go to huge record corporations like SONY.

I happen to work for a Fortune 500 company, and it is a code of ethics violation to discuss salary. Only the CEO abd Boartd of Director's salarys and bonuses arte public knowledge, because the stockholders demand it. Nothing pisses me off more when salarys of entertainers and athletes become public knowledge. Look, I don't give a crap how much money KK Downing, Lars Ulrich or LaDanian Tomlinson make. Yeah they make good money. Yeah The owners of Sony, Microsoft The New York Mets etc.... make good money. If people spent less time crying about, the world will be a better place.

Of course KK didn't receive a royalty check from the RIAA- SoundExchange (FYI- major RIAA labels make up 75% of the SoundExchange board, the rest is filled in by artists and indie labels) distributes royalties, not the RIAA. It doesn't surprise me that he hasn't seen a dime. First, the royalties are used for litigation (and they spent a pretty penny to lobby the Copyright Royalty Board to increase rates). THEN, 50% goes to the performance copyright holder (usually the label), the rest is divvied up among the performers on the recording (45% to the major artist, 5% for any minor performer). As an internet broadcaster who pays an arm and a leg already to broadcast, this really pisses me off that one of the artists I play very often hasn't seen a dime even though they get considerable airtime. Screw SoundExchange and the RIAA! When have they done anything to help the artist anyway? Those greedy bastards...

He was informed in this interview. He didn't like what he heard, and he responded to the questions he got. Period. No agenda and no motive from KK's part. So what's the problem here? He didn't wear a Anti-RIAA t-shirt? Come on... The interesting thing about this article isn't that KK is against these assholes. The interesting thing is that this company is outthere and that people are informed about the harm they might be able to do. This is a great way of spreading these news, and if KK comments on it - it will make even bigger noise in the metal community.

and KK was by far the nicest guy. I hope he does even more solo projects, etc, because sometimes Tipton gets a little too much of the attention.

The RIAA sucks ass. I hope that instead of people downloading music for free, that Artists still find a way to sell their music and make a profit without benefitting that useless organization.
