SCOTT WEILAND's Wife Says Her 'Bipolar Disorder' Is To Blame For Weekend's Events - Mar. 27, 2007
VELVET REVOLVER singer Scott Weiland's wife Mary has issued a statement regarding the reports that she was arrested on Sunday (March 25) after she allegedly set her husband's $10,000 wardrobe on fire outside their home in Toluca Lake, California. Cops responded to a "female burning clothes" call late Saturday evening (March 24) and booked Mary Weiland for suspicion of felony arson vandalism. The couple's two children were placed in the care of family friends. Mary was booked at a Burbank police station and released on $50,000 bail three hours later.

The arrest came less than a day after the Weilands were thrown out of the Graciela Hotel in Burbank after they left a room there in shambles during what was bein described in media reports as a violent argument. The couple allegedly hurled furniture, made "dents and gouges" in the room's walls, and even left bloodstains on some of the linens.

Mary Weiland's statement reads as follows:

"With regards to this past weekend's events, it's important to my husband and I that the reports regarding domestic violence, as well as our children's safety, contain facts and not speculation.

"The weekend's difficulties were brought on by a reaction to an imbalance in medications used to treat my bipolar disorder. Reports that we were fighting at the Graciela Hotel are untrue. Scott was simply trying to help calm me down. I want to make it very clear that he did not hurt me in any way. For lack of a better expression, I was unstable and just 'lost it.'

"Payment for the damages to the Graciela Hotel has already been made. The gracious staff and management have accepted our apologies and welcome us back in the future.

"Most importantly, neither of our children were witness to any of these events and they have been in the care of a family member. Scott and I are very involved in our children's lives on a daily basis and we love them unconditionally. We appreciate all your concerns and how supportive people have been.

"After nearly seven years of marriage I am truly grateful to have a loving husband, drug-free for 3-1/2 years now, who is able to care for me during this challenging time.

"We ask that you refer to this statement for the facts and depend on no other source."

Mary's statement that "neither of our children were witness to any of these events" appears to contradict the version offered by Scott Weiland in a posting on VELVET REVOLVER's web site. Scott wrote about the hotel incident, "My wife locked herself in the adjoining room when that damage was done. I want to make it clear that I called security when I heard the glass being broken from next door. Security was unable to enter until she let them in. I sent my children off to a safe place with my assistant (who witnessed all of the events of the evening, until my wife locked herself in the room), and I left the hotel in order to avoid conflict with my wife."

Scott Weiland previously pleaded guilty to domestic violence charges against Mary in December of 2001. He had to pay a fine and was put on probation.

The couple had also been estranged over Weiland's drug use a few years back, with Mary Weiland reportedly beginning divorce proceedings before the two reconciled. Weiland recently told Launch that he's successfully stayed clean for the last several years. "Last few years have been great. I mean, I don't really feel the necessity to, or the responsibility to — you know, it's been over three and a half years for me, so, I mean, that's all that I feel like I really need to say," he said.

VELVET REVOLVER's new album, "Libertad", is tentatively scheduled for release on June 5, with a U.S. tour scheduled to begin on May 4 in Hollywood.

Bullshit. How come every time an incident happens with celebrities or most peope in real life there is always some lame excuse; like diagnosing yourself with a "Disease" or some other crap. I like STP and all but Weiland is a nutjob.

I believe her. Bi-Polar Disorder is a real disease and is partially responsible for people doing some weird, wild, violent, or just strange stuff. I was in a very threatening situation with a patient once who had not taken his medicine properly. Scared me silly and made me a believer, but only because I had seen him before when the medicine was taken correctly.

I wish the Weilands all the best!

why are all the idiots on this site so bloody judgmental when it comes to celebrity? Mary Weiland just happens to be a person, like some of you claim to be. diagnostics? what is she, a car? diagnoses, maybe. have some respect for people with real illnesses, people. yes, there is a freakin' disease for everything these days, but don't damn the few because of the acts of the many, losers. ever thought that maybe she has an actual condition? lock them up and take their kids? WTF? I hope you aren't a parent Lobsterman. and no, barneyrubble, get your facts straight. when the poor and indigent have a problem, they do not haul the kids off because they are not celebrity. more often than not kids go back with deadbeat parents more than they should.

some of you guys need to go to school.

Tyrannus and MANTICOR, wow you guys are real pieces of shit.

i dont know how old you are, but i'm guessing neither of you have experienced much real life as of yet. statements like that make me almost wish that blabbermouth would reinstitute it's hardcore PC policy. but i digress.

duff's pancreas exploded because of his drinking. he's been sober for years now, he's one of the few gunners who invested wisely and now has a nice life, and bottom line you just don't look as good as he does these days (which is waaaaay better than he did 20 years ago) unless you are living a really healthy life. he's in incredible shape, has a great life, and he's one of the nicest guys you can possibly meet. more power to him.

now, i'm as familiar as the next guy with publicists trying to spin things in a positive way when negative publicity rears it's head for a celebrity, so i can't vouch for this statement's validity though it does seem heartfelt just from reading it at face value. aside from that though, having bipolar disorder is not a joke. it is extremely real, and i've had to deal with it in my life more times than i care to remember. i've lost relationships, great friends and some of the most creative and fruitful musical relationships i've ever had largely as a result of it, though i did everything i could to try to hang on to them. it's incredibly hard to deal with something like that when you're not wired that way, or you're "normal"....or whatever. everyone has their quirks, some much bigger than others. but try to imagine dealing with the best friend or the coolest, most happy & positive person you've ever known one day and the next you're having to try to keep them from commiting suicide. there's no middle ground, where most of us are.....you're either high on life or you want to end it all. nothing else. zero middle ground. that's a tough reality to deal with, and i'm extremely glad i'm not wired up like that. but it is definitely not a fucking joke, that's for sure.

For 10 years, I haved worked in the mental health field with psychiatrists. The general public (including the media) tends to oversimplify and generalize "disorders" and "diseases." As a result of this problem, many often characterize Bipolar Disorder (and others) as a condition that controls the person and causes them to behave inappropriately. This simply is not true. Having Bipolar Disorder does not excuse one from acting and behaving responsibly. To blame medication or a disorder for one's misbehavior is a tendency many have because it offers an easy way out of negative consequences. Having a psychiatric disorder does not relieve one of a conscience as well as the capacity to make decisions between right and wrong. Any reputable psychiatrist will agree.

Keep in mind also that psychiatry is the only branch of medicine that took it upon itself to redefine "disease" to include the nonphysical. Psychiatry is then the only branch of medicine that created its illnesses rather than discovered them. No psychiatrist can "prove" his or her diagnosis in the way that non-psychiatric physicians can "prove" their diagnoses; that is, with a physical test. This is true because there is not a single physical test that confirms psychiatric disorders like Bipolar. Psychiatrists treat conduct and behavior biologically. Many are unaware of this fact. I am not arguing against psychiatry. In fact, any sincere psychiatrist would agree and would be open to talk to their patients about how their discipline differs significantly from other fields of medicine.

Death Metal act Bloodbath have announced a new line-up and new Mini CD! After calling it a day after a failed search for a new vocalist, the Swedish band have anounced in a blog and bulletin on the popular web-community, myspace, that they would be returning to Fascination Street studios (same place Nightmares Made Flesh was done) in early June, released of their own back. The line up is expected to be anounced soon.

the arrest that was made a couple years back regarding domestic abuse shouldn't even be mentioned here. They use it to make it out that they have a physically abusive relationship, but they certainly don't go out of their way to mention that the domestic abuse case came when Scotty had just fallen back into his addiction.

I'd say a horrible addiction can easily switch your attitude when you're looking for a fix and the closest person you have in your life is threatening you. I'd say the addiction changes that circumstance but since it makes this story juicier why not plug it in here.

I hope this stuff works itself out and everything subsides if for anything but the kids' sake.

And oh yeah, WEILAND IS A GOD!!!

Bi polar is real, but in this incident it sounds like a plausable excuse for a weekend of bad partying and a good ole domestic fight that perhaps she may have perpetuated...However, I don't think Scott was an angel in all of it. Isn't he on probation? if that is still the case than, if he were to have been to blame, he would have had a new charge on top of violating probation...Now how do you think that would have went over for his band mates, and the media??? As far as him being sober for almost 4 years. I don't believe that either... I've known plenty of "musicians" that claim to be clean, but aren't.... It's only a matter of time before he gets busted again...
