METALLICA: New Studio Photos Posted Online

According to a message posted at the official METALLICA fan club ( MetClub), the band returned to its studio in Northern California on March 19-23 to do some "rehearsing and tweaking of the new songs." The group is believed to have since gone back to Los Angeles to continue recording its new album with producer Rick Rubin. Check out brand new pictures from the studio: Photo#1Photo#2Photo#3Photo#4Photo#5Photo#6Photo#7METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich told a New York radio program on March 2 that the band is laying down 14 songs for its ninth studio album, which the group officially began recording on March 12. Unlike the troubled, turbulent sessions for the band's last album, 2003's "St. Anger", Ulrich told Launch that pre-production for the new effort has had a whole different vibe. "It's frighteningly tame (laughs)," he said. "The four of us show up and we hang out and we have a great time, and there are no psychiatrists in sweaters, there are no film crews, it's very much like it used to be. It's pretty mellow around here. All that 'St. Anger' stuff seems like a movie (laughs)." The group plans to work in the studio until early June, take a break for its European tour, then finish recording in August. As for whether METALLICA will release the new album in 2007, Ulrich said, "I'd like to try and get it out this year, I hope we can get it out this year. If it doesn't come out this year, then it will be out at the very beginning of next year."

Just think metallica have not put out a good record in almost 20years the first 4 records are amazing and the black album was good but nothing like the first four. Check out the new MACHINEHEAD album if you like the great song writing metallica used to do,its the best metal i think i've 15-20years you wont be disapointed.

something tells me they might go back to a sound similar to the black album.might have a few rockers like enter sandman and a few ballads like nothing else matters and unforgiven.they might do this to gain a few fans as album sales have dwindled more and more since every album after the black album.i don't ever see them doing another thrashy 80's album because they don't have that kind of energy anymore and most of their fans now are those they gained in the 90's.they lost their thrash fanbase years ago.or most of it anyway.

I was'nt comparing METLLICA TO MACHINEHEAD I agree 2 differnt bands . By any means i'm not knocking metallica .Just the new MACHINEHEAD RECORD brings back to the great song writing metallica/megadeth/testament and the thrash era had.

I think the guys look great. I think St. Anger gets better with age, and may be, the first, real, for-sure, classic Metallica album. The rest just sort of follow, starting with Kill'em All and ending with And Justice For All. I like Metallica, Load and Re-Load, though the chronology confuses me. So, rearrange your Metallica collection oh you minions of metal, as it seems the book is confusingly written about these four young men, and their heritage. I think you have to start with St. Anger, and then look back, I don't know if that's how I felt when I bought The Garage Days Ep and then And Justice For All. I was looking forward to something along the lines of Load or Re-Load, and then maybe Ride The Lightening after say And Justice For All. Though as Dave Mustaine says "...hindsight is always 20/20..."...

It shouldn't take them over 6-8 weeks to record the new record (assuming they have the tunes at least 80 percent complete). I think there's a such thing as over analyzing every detail.

I think Colbert should put you on notice mister! I hate this site! Everyone who posts here is always saying the same thing. This band sucks, they're old, they can't deliver. These are people who have been doing this forever, they'll do it as long as their able to, end of story. So, I'd suggest that instead of talking bullshit, that you go out and try to do what they've done, if not in music then by doing something else.
I'd like to see Colbert put this whole site on the "Dead To Me" board!

It's a shame the only Metal part of Metallica is Kirk Hammet. James is doing whatever the hell he's doing with his vocals, Robert is an amazing bassist, but he's not a Metal bassist, Lars is still a good drummer, but damn man....Anyway, I sure hope this album can restore my faith in such a legendary band, b/c everything since "And Justice for All" has been a let down.

And I see this album as somewhat of a last chance of sorts for these guys to put their asses back in high gear and start spinning heads.
I have had faith from the first time I heard Master Of Puppets as a 3 year old (when the album came out) and later the first two Kill Em' All and Ride The Lightning probably right before AJFA was released.
I think when they got rich they did become lazy to an extent and started making material far less impressive than they are capable of.
I am not one of those that are going to knock Load and ReLoad eventhough I do prefer the heavier Metallica material over it if you actually knew what diversity was in your musical taste I doubt anyone would find those albums too harsh on the ears and because of that I find them to be very good albums at best.
St.Anger got me irritated at the guys because I was one of those who were fooled by the "back to the old school" sound bs.
On the count of that I will say that I see this album as Metallica's last chance to impress me or atleast make me happy. If this album sucks I will put that into consideration before buying Metallica releases in the future.
Put all the petty comments aside and realize these guys didn't all of a sudden lose the talent they had in the 80's and early part of the 90's and they just chose not to utilize it to it's full potential but I guarantee you given that Rick Rubin is a KNOWN work horse and producer that this will be expected that they go out every day Rick shows up at that studio rather it be 2am,3am or whatever and show the talent they had back then to it's fullest potential now.
Rob's addition can only help the cause and with him having a similar hard working attitude it may just rub off on the others and cause a chain reaction that will lead Metallica into making material that they are capable of for a change.
Now,assuming that this all comes to pass as true then I'll gladly reserve my copy of the new Metallica album and await its release.

A band that big has other stuff to deal with besides, making a record there older now, they have kid's, and they want to make it a kick ass album. It's funny how you people could bash someone that you know you all used to love, if your brother went gay would you just disown him or would you accept that he's changed over the years. think about it, how many bands write the same record over again a lot of them. Everyone of metallica's albums are different, not to many bands could change there sound as much as they have and still kick ass, most people that bash metallica are prob hs dropouts working at mcdonalds, or are not smart enough to expand there minds a little bit!!!

if the band did return to the black album sound (at least production sound wise). I've been a fan since RTL and while that still ranks as my all time favorite Metallica album, Metallica fans have to realize that Metallica is not going to GO BACK to the style of KEA, RTL or MOP.
I'd be glad to see the band just go back to the Black album style cause many of those songs on the album were great. Holier Than Thou & Through the Never still made you want to pound your fist through the wall & Sad But True had the heaviness & slow groove of classic Sabbath.
Even Load & Reload had its moments : Devil's Dance, King Nothing, Fixxer, The Outlaw Torn come to mind.
Just stay the hell away from the mess that was St. Anger. I'll fess up to liking Frantic & Some Kind of Monster (the single version which more straight forward), however, the album is clearly a clusterfuck or an experiment gone terribly wrong.
And while I still think that Robert doesn't belong or fit with this band & that they should cut the crap & get Jason back, I'd be just as happy as a long time Metallica fan to see them release an album of good songs.

They started strong in the 80's, but the majority of their career has been garbage.
I wish for once, the rock fans would stick it to Metallica and not spend money on their awful new records. It is a pitiful day in music when turd-squirt albums like "Load" and "St. Pecker" are multi-platinum sellers.
This band knows they can pump out half-assed records and they're going to sell like crazy simply because they say Metallica.

it is the song quality. The songs suck. Not one good song from them since 1989. I had my hopes after the Black album but then they dropped a load of shit and it's been downhill eversince. Who goes to a Metallica show and yells out PLAY UNFORGIVEN II AND MAMA SAID? Everyone is there to see them play the old shit from 83-89 which they can't even do right anymore.

Hopefully Rick Rubin can help channel the full potential out of metallica. There is no reason why there last four or five efforts have been as weak as they were. St. Anger could have been alot better if Bob Rock wasn't such a pussy about things. Instead of stepping up to the plate and letting these guys know they need to push things a little harder, he just fed into their almighty Metallica ego's by saying things like " yeah, that sounds great, I really can feel the anger in your voice James. " I mean come on, you mean to tell me he actually thought that Lar's drums sounded good that raw? Yes, it is good to try to keep things as raw as possible but come on know this is the almighty Metallica were talking about here. St. Anger's songs should have been on the Garage Inc. album. The world of metal needs Metallica to come back and kick this metal industry in the ass. They are well capable of it, despite their ages and the lack of hair. I mean bands like Slayer who have been around as long as Metallica if not longer are still fucking shit up well into they're forties. Fuck the money, the fame, and success. Metallica please come back and show these stupid metal bands what it's all about.

what the hell are you all talking about? metallica rocks and always will, sure st anger wasnt as good as the rest of their albums but so fucking what? its still miles ahead of anything any other band has to offer. true fans stick by their band. why come to this site and just hate? haven't you got better things to do with your time?
