METALLICA: Five Albums In Finnish Top 40 - Apr. 1, 2007
Heavy metal/hard rock music continues to thrive in Finland, where bands like CHILDREN OF BODOM regularly top the chart with their single and full-length releases.

Following the recent announcement that METALLICA will play at the Olympic Stadium in Helsinki, Finland on July 15, no less than five of the band's albums have placed in the official Finnish Top 40:

11. Master of Puppets
12. Metallica
20. Ride the Lightning
22. ...And Justice for All
35. Kill 'Em All

View the entire chart at this location.

Tickets for METALLICA's Helsinki concert reportedly sold out less than 30 minutes after they went on sale on February 28, 2007.

METALLICA's last show at the Olympic Stadium in Helsinki, Finland — on May 28, 2004 — was attended by 46,000 people, which is nearly 1 percent of the country's 5.5-million population.

Whether you are a hater or not, they inspired thousands to pick up and play... They are responsible for so much of the inspiration that brought us the metal of today..... They'll be rollin' in their 60s too.

And, of course, as evidenced by the posts to follow this one, there will still be losers taking shots at them as they sell millions of tickets, records, and merch.

You are 100% correct. Metallica are definitely still relevant in the metal scene. Load, Reload, and St. Anger must have just been out of print or something. Yeah, that's it! So the only Cds the stores had in stock were the first five albums. Such a shame, since Load, Reload, and St. Anger are undisputed metal classics.

Also, Canada Owns Sweden at Ice Hockey. Period.

I cant even listen to old Metallica anymore, it all seems tainted.

How does Metallica getting albums from 20 years ago selling on the charts make them relevant today? It merely demonstrates their fall from glory (everything after Black album blows despite a good song or two spanning the records that came afterwards). What would make them relevant is getting records like St. Anger or Load on that chart.

I'm personally very interested in what the next record will sound like... They're really going to have to earn my purchase after that crappy job on the last one (Why didn't they release Chains of Pain on it, that song was pretty good?).

Why does everyone hate Load so much? It's a lot better than the black album. The sound is great (especially for people like me who use headphones most of the time). It's very dark and very angry. King Nothing>Enter Sandman. The lyrics are amazing - Hero of the Day in particular. Bleeding Me and The Outlaw Torn are just really great, really weird songs. Ain't My Bitch and Wasting My Hate both kick ass.

I'd love to read some actual reasons why people think it's crap, and why it's usually mentioned in the same breath as reload when it's a completely different kind of record.

It's not a convincing argument that Metallica are no longer relevant because 5 of their "old" albums are in Finland's top 40. If they were truly irrelevant (which means unrelated to the matter being considered), Metallica would not appear on the list at all. The matter being considered here is Finland's Top 40 list. Metallica occupies 5 places on the list. Hence, they are relevant. In fact, unless another band has more than 5 albums on the list, Metallica are the MOST relevant band on the list.

like it or not, Metallica continues to pulverize ALL metal-related bands in terms of longevity, record sales AND concert attendence. Nearly all metal-type bands will never even begin to compare to Metallica's success--over 90 million records sold, a 25 year career (and counting). Metallica's arguably worst record (St. Anger) still sold 2 million copies in the U.S. 2 million. Most metal-type bands today would donate a body organ to sell 2 million records because they struggle like hell to sell over 100,000. Metallica is a monster. They're the 7th best selling "act" of ALL time, all over the world, across ALL genres. In addition to selling 14 million U.S. copies upon its release, Metallica's "Black Album" sold one million copies per year for at least 10 years! What metal band compares to these statistics? None.

This may be true, but something has to be said for the fact that half of the rosters of these euro squads play together on a regulair basis, there for forming more of a "Team". These canadian players are more talented, but it tough for them to all of a sudden be put on a line with guys they have never played with before and expect them to gel right away.

If Canada put together a A, B and C team, and played together for several months (or years) before the tournament, Id be willin to bet that the 'C' team could very well take home the gold every year.

In the past I would have agreed with you, but in the recent years the international game has become much more of an NHL game. I can barely name any Russians (save Malkin) or Swedes (Stefan Liv) who played in those games who weren't on an NHL squad. Even going back to Nagano in 98, I would say you're correct, but the NHL is much more of an international game now that almost all teams have heavy representation in the NHL. They don't get to play with each other as much as they used to. It's not like the days of the Soviet Red Army.

That said, if the Canadians put together a solid, all-around team of scorers and shutdown checkers that got to practice and play together for a while, it wouldn't matter who'd play them the Canadians would win. That I agree with you on. But the reality is that only the Finns and Czechs field teams without 90% NHL representation. The Swedes won fielding a team like the canadians.

On topic, Metallica came out with some great shit in the 80's. Load was a good hard rock album, but by no means a metal album. Reload was rehash, St. Anger was a decent idea gone phenomenally wrong. But to say Metallica is irrelevant doesn't respect their Metal history. It's ignorance. These albums gave birth to countless metalheads who make a lot of the music all metalheads love now, so by default, they're still relevant.
