RIAA Goes After NINE INCH NAILS Fans Over Deliberate Leak Campaign
- Apr. 3, 2007

Launch Radio Networks reports: The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), which has become notorious for suing anyone from high school students to retirees for downloading music from the web, has gone after web sites such as Idolator that have posted leaked songs from the upcoming NINE INCH NAILS album, "Year Zero". The problem, however, is that the tracks were leaked intentionally. Several songs from the album were left on computer hard drives at venues on the band's current European tour, with fans finding and posting them on the web for others to download and swap. According to Billboard.com, the RIAA sent cease-and-desist emails to web sites that posted the tracks, leading one industry source to say, "These f***ing idiots are going after a campaign that the label signed off on."
While a number of songs have been intentionally released, the entire NINE INCH NAILS album has not leaked online yet. The CD arrives on April 17.
In addition to the leaked tracks, the marketing campaign for "Year Zero" has featured cryptic messages on T-shirts and a maze of linked web sites that expand upon the album's storyline of a future U.S. on the brink of apocalypse.
The same source told Billboard that NINE INCH NAILS frontman Trent Reznor views the campaign as a "new entertainment form." The source added that the campaign will continue for the next 18 months.
"Year Zero" is reportedly the first of two concept albums, the second of which Reznor hopes to finish next year.
NINE INCH NAILS finishes its European tour on April 10 in Finland and has just announced another round of shows on that continent beginning in August. A trip to Australia and Japan is planned for May. North American dates have not been announced yet.

I don't think I have been this excited about a Nine Inch Nails record since Broken ep. Year Zero sounds very promising.
Aaron North from The Icarus Line is still with NIN right???? Awesome

Well I must say, if The Label is in fact behind the campaign to leak several songs...that is genius. If you can't beat 'em, then might as well join 'em. It's about time the label tries something new. I mean the music is going to be leaked anyhow...we all know this, so just sanction proper leaks and booyah!
Maybe the majors are finally going to get it right....NAH, I highly doubt that!!! but just a thought

I understand artists need their cash, don't want to get screwed, and it's the RIAA's job to make sure they get it (actually that's wrong, it's ASCAP, BMI and SESAC's job) but seriously. This is stupid.
I didn't think something so moronic was even a possibility.
Dumbasses.
Oh, and fuck them for acting like they have judicial power to interpret copyright law. Suddenly they choose not to recognize giving your friend a CD as fair use? Go fuck yourself, and fuck Microsoft for bending over backwards to make you greedy assholes happy.
Seeing as music profitability is at an all-time high.

For record industry (and for some more industries also) time is over. Not in the form of "a sudden massive dinosaurs extinction by a meteor" but more like "a slow and painfully Titanic sinking".
We are about to enter in the YEAR ZERO of a new era of interactive, intercultural entertainment and conscious thinking based in music, that's impossible to record in a PVC disc.
That was something that RIAA affiliates weren't able to supply to the fans timely. Seven years ago they should have grabbed a copy of "The Cluetrain Manifesto", read and apply it, but now it's too late for them to understand us the fans, in fact they I think they never have. But today we can talk between us and be heard by the people that really matter.
Brilliant and creative artists like Mr. Trent Reznor don't deserve to be represented by this unfocused people. He doesn't even need them. He have plenty of resources and talent to connect directly with us, the fans, electronically through the web and physically at many venues in the world that would be happy to have his show, as he is he currently doing now. It will be more fun for both of us, artist and fans.
Good by useless intermediation.
