NINE INCH NAILS: Entire 'Year Zero' Album Available For Streaming - Apr. 4, 2007
NINE INCH NAILS' entire new album, "Year Zero", is being streamed at the YearZero.nin.com web site (free e-mail registration required in top right hand corner of page).

Due on April 17, "Year Zero" is reportedly the first of two concept albums, the second of which mainman Trent Reznor hopes to finish next year.

Reznor recently told Gigwise.com that the concept behind "Year Zero" was partially inspired by his feelings toward the Bush administration. Reznor explained, "I really wanted to focus on something that was at the forefront of my consciousness which is, as an American, I'm appalled by the behavior of our government, the direction that it has taken and the direction that it's taken everyone else in the world and its arrogance. I decided to write an essay about where the world might be if we continue down the path that we're on with a neo-con-esque government doing whatever it pleases."

"Year Zero" is set 15 years in the future, when a totalitarian right-wing government has taken over the U.S. and is possibly putting drugs in the water supply to sedate the populace while it wages religious war. Reznor added, "There are no concepts in the story that aren't rooted in things that already are happening."

Reznor previously expressed his unhappiness with the current government in "The Hand That Feeds" from 2005's "With Teeth".

NINE INCH NAILS finishes its European tour on April 10 in Finland and has just announced another round of shows on that continent beginning in August. A trip to Australia and Japan is planned for May. North American dates have not been announced yet.

Ahh it sucks! Listen to Mastodon and Meshuggah instead!!. Just kidding. Year Zero sounds pretty good so far. I've always like most NIN releases. I can appreciate a band pushing its boundaries.

I'm streaming now, as well...almost finished, but I am totally digging this new one. Much better than With Teeth, but maybe not quite as good as Pretty Hate Machine. Good job Trent!

I listened to all of the tracks and I liked what I heard. This new CD is way better than "The Fragile" or "With Teeth". Both of those discs had some great songs but they were both very spotty. The new disc "Year Zero" is pretty consistent from start to finish.

See what happens when Trent gets off the coke and whatever else he was doing. He gets back to being creative once again and comes up with his best batch of songs since "The Downward Spiral" came out 14 years ago.

Well, as a whole I like it better than most of the leaked tracks, but then again I like avril lavigne better than most of the leaked tracks.

The great destroyer and in this twilight are good, but as a whole it still sounds like self-indulgant blips and bleeps without any real songwriting.

I can't think of any good concept album released after hte 70s. what the fuck happened?

Savatage - Streets
KISS - The Elder (ha ha, sorry, couldn't resist)

I know there's more, but I'm having a brain fart at the moment...

I love what I've heard so far!

As for the whole discussion of the albums, I find the Downward Spiral to be their best album. I'm not much a fan of The Fragile unless I'm high or something. Pretty Hate Machine will always be a great. Things falling Apart, I admit, although it's not a major release, it's still a great listen. Broken is next to The Downward Spiral. I liked With Teeth, but it wasn't heavy enough for me; I still liked it though. I may be the only one with the Perfect Drug mixes, but man, I don't wanna travel back to those days...But, all in all, I really like what I'm hearing and I'll definately buy it as soon as it gets in stores.

Based on survivalism and my violent heart I didn't think I'd like this album, but it's actually very good. I can't say I like it better than With Teeth yet - I didn't hear anything that made an impression on me like all the love in the world did the first time I heard it. I still like Pretty Hate Machine best for now.

You're right - The Roger Waters disc is great, hwoever I never think of it as being post-70s becuase. . well, it's Roger Waters. Perhaps it's best to say that I can't think of any concept albums produced by people who weren't around and doing it in the 70's.

I generally find with concept albums and concept bands, that the songwriter concentrates more on the concept than on the songs themselves, so you get a lot of "artistic" pedestrian songs.

As for Dream Theater and Queensryche. . . dude - you just named two of my least favorite bands.

In the words of a now famous musician. . .while he was drunk

"Dream Theater is the ultimate cock-blocking music. If you ever wanna NOT get laid, put on Dream Theater"

COMMENT | Ugh. . . King Diamond

Seventh Son of a Seventh son was good, but I never really thought that it stood up to albums like The wall, tommy, Quadrophenia, Ziggy Stardust, etc.

King Diamond - ugh. I have a hard time not laughing when I hear king diamond, and honestly, I've never heard anything from him that I thought was truely brilliant. BUT bear in mind that I put everyone up against Stevie Wonder, David Bowie, Ray Charles, Johnny Cash, etc when it comes to songwriting.

The thing about great songs is that they can be presented [almost] any way you want, and they're still great. So why settle? And this is realy why I don't like this CD. Trent could have presented every noisey idea I've heard on this disc in *brilliant* songs. It wouldn't detract from the songs themselves, and great songwriting wouldn't detract from the core ideas because that's the nature of great songwriting. His ideas are good (most of the the time), but since they're presented on such weak material here, I just can't connect with it. For the first time ever, I'm not excited about a nin release.

But back to the concept album list. Of the last four you listed, I think radiohead is probably the best of the bands (though I do like fantomas. Wish Mr. Bungle would get back together!) and OK computer just wasn't a concept album. It has a theme, yes, but they didn't sit down to write a conceptual album. They wrote a brilliant album, made an amazing work of art, and the sogns happen to work together in way that flows well on all levels, as any great album should. they did not, however, sit down and say "let's do this."

wow. that was verbose.

With Teeth was much better. You guys are retarded. None of this stands out like the songs on with teeth. Great detroyer showed promise till the end. Like someone said it seems mostly like a lot of blips and beeps, this is why trent should take 5 years between albums. Not liking this.

Trent Reznor and Nine Inch Nails fucking own, and this album is terrific from what i've listened to. With Teeth was an amazing album as well, probably when it blows down to it...either my first or second favorite. But i can't decide between With Teeth and The Downward Spiral. Trent is just too damn sexy in those eras.

Ok... I just listened to the "year zero" cd. Well, just the first one. Anyway, it sounds pretty cool and all. Musically I think if Trent used "that" same type of music on "With Teeth", with teeth would have been a better cd. This new cd, all I like is the music. Tried of hear "Bush this, Bush that". Sorry Trent, a little to late....
