Report: GILBY CLARKE Quits ROCK STAR SUPERNOVA; Band To Change Name
- Apr. 12, 2007
|
|
According to ET Canada, former GUNS N' ROSES guitarist Gilby Clarke has left ROCK STAR SUPERNOVA, the band he formed with Tommy Lee ( MÖTLEY CRÜE), Jason Newsted ( VOIVOD, ex- METALLICA) and Canadian vocalist Lukas Rossi. No reason was given for Gilby's departure but the disastrous sales of the group's self-titled debut album (which has shifted less than 56,000 copies in the United States since its November 2006 release, according to Nielsen SoundScan) are believed to have been a contributing factor. Although Rossi didn't confirm Clarke's exit from the band, he told ET Canada that "there will be a name change… the best is yet to come!" He also said that he is working on lyrics for a new album. There is no word yet if Lee and Newsted will continue to be involved with the group, which completed a U.S. tour in February with THE PANIC CHANNEL as support. The band lost Newsted in October 2006 after an accident that resulted in a torn anterior labrum in his left shoulder and a rotator cuff and bicep tear in the right (bassist Johnny Colt of BLACK CROWES/ TRAIN filled in during the aforementioned trek). Newsted suffered the injuries while trying to catch a 90-pound bass head that had fallen from atop his amp. The combination of surgery and a lengthy rehab assignment left him sidelined for up to nine months. "Rock Star Supernova" was certified gold in January for Canadian sales in excess of 50,000 copies.

Maybe im old but having 'disasterous sales' and yet being certified gold just seems wrong, what happened to the days when a band had to shift a million to be considered a success? Now some two bit shite can sell 1000 copies and get to no1 in the charts...bullshit.

Pretty soon, the knob they have singing for this trainwreck will be the only selling point left.
They need to get some more members in there who will move more tix than they have so far- maybe members of Pretty Boy Floyd, Sleeze Beez or Roxx Gang, for instance.

Probably, there already is a band called supernova. They did the Chewbacca song in the Clerks movie. You know, the scene where they are talking about star wars, they play that song in the background.

these ass clowns. just looked them up. their album was released by Sony. why do majors keep fucking with these washed up hacks? NOBODY cares about these non-supergroup albums. they hardly ever sell. And most of these guys can't shift any units outside of their main bands anyway---in Tommy's case, he just can't move shit in general. even the last 'back to basics' Crue album tanked. 'Tommyland' sold what, 100,000? i don't understand why the majors keep cutting the cheques for this has beens. surely they must know from the get-go it's a dead investment.

I really can't comment on this too much I never watched the show...heard a couple of songs and wasn't impressed...sounded pretty generic. However, I do like Gilby Clarke and Lee is an incredible rock drummer especially, on the MC '95 record. Anyway, what's with the pop-ups on this site?...they're annoying. C'mon Blabbermouth!

It was probably in the contract Jason signed to run with this band for at least the 1st album and tour. Then after that it would be up to them if they wanted to stick together but still be signed to label. Jason either was just using this for some face time (which i doubt, jason has always been a stand-up guy) or to get some money to help voivod. (most likely) If the right vocalist had been chosen he might have done the band. However I think faking his injury was the only way to get out of it.

From highly credible sources, I heard Jason really has some kind of injury. If you believe it was a fake act, well... I mean, I don't say that he used it as an excuse--I don't know that--but he did have an injury, whatever the intentions or chain of events.

When they announced the second season of the show. Yes it's a hard rock answer to American Idol but the INITIAL IDEA/SEASON was much better. I thought that the whole idea of this show was to find and replace a missing member of an EXISTING BAND WITH A SOLID FANBASE already, so that you will have someone to sell the records TO. You can't argue with the results INXS has gotten with JD Fortune from the first season, and I thought the second season was going to continue either with Van Halen or Queen, then Van Halen decided not to participate and Queen began working with Paul Rodgers. But then they go and compile a SUPER??? Group, granted you can't argue with the chops of Newstead, Clarke and Lee as far as PLAYING goes. But these disparate entities just do not have the fanbases individually to actually sell any real amount of records.

We Bought A MILLION copies of BUSH X's(Just called BUSH in the rest of the world, there was some '70's band with the same name etc...) their Debut Album, Sixteen Stone. There were 5 Hit Singles here off of that record, Everything Zen, Little Things, Glycerine, ComeDown, and Machine Head(Before the Band called that was even heard of). But if you go to ANY used CD store, they ALL have AT LEAST 5 copies. We got sucked in by the hype but then got wise and dropped them like a hot stone, I think their 2nd album only sold like 40,000 copies in total here, although don't quote me on that as I didn't look up the actual numbers.

It's no suprise Gilby Jumped Ship, I mean with photo's of Lucas and Tommy, Jason's "Injury", He'll get his Royalties regardless. Even if this material was some of his weakest anyway, it's still a sinking ship. I won't den'y that Gilby Clarke does have a certain level of appeal, and is a fairly talented Guitarist and SongWriter, with a good fanbase, and if you want to hear a good album of Pure Rock n' Roll, Pawn Shop Guitars will fill the bill. And let's not forget that WAXL POSE thinks he's the man, but IZZY STRADLIN was the REAL GENIUS behind Guns n' Roses seccess, and Gilby was the GUY who got the JOB. It's not easy to step into IZZY Stradlins shoes, rehearse 30 songs, and play a THREE YEAR WORLD TOUR, and not fall apart at the seams. So Sure, Gilby is never gonna change the world, but let's give credit where credit is due.

(*keep in mind that's considered "Gold" here. 100,000 is "Platinum". Pretty sad.)
Plus, their fucking weak-ass video for "Headspin" is getting mucho airplay on MuchLOUD. I've actually subjected myself to that bullshit once, just for shits'n'giggles. Yep, you guessed it, it sucks! Maybe "Tailspin" would've been a more appropriate name for the first single.
Man, what the FUCK is wrong with people here? Just because the singer happens to be Canadian (who gives a fuck?), & won a TV contest to be in a "band" with a bunch of fucking has-beens (former American "rock stars" maybe, but has-beens, no less). Alright, Newsted is a cool guy, sure, but what was he thinking? He should've just concentrated on VoiVod. Although the "injury" was a good plan. As for Tommy Lee, gee, good for you, guess this shit beats having nobody buy another Methods of Mayhem record, eh? Gilby Clarke? Who? Toured with Guns'n'Roses but only actually played on "The Spaghetti Incident?!" Wow, that's a "rock star", alright!
I just can't believe all the hosers who bought into this shit. All of you are probably awaiting the next Nickelback record with baited breath too.
A funny joke: Q: What's the number-one selling record in Canada right now? A: Whatever was number-one in the US six months ago.
