MEGADETH's DAVE MUSTAINE Says Hearing AC/DC For First Time Changed His Life
- Apr. 15, 2007
|
|
MEGADETH mainman Dave Mustaine recently spoke to Neil Jeffries of Classic Rock ( web site) about AC/DC's classic "Let There Be Rock" LP for the magazine's "Every Home Should Have One - Albums You Should Own" feature. "When I was in my teens, I lived in Huntington Beach, California, and there was a girl called Cindy who worked at a record store," Mustaine began. "I used to sell pot, but I would trade her pot for records. She liked to come over to my house to smoke it and [makes a rude gesture], so that's how I discovered AC/DC. "The first time I put the record on, I was looking at the back cover and wondering, 'What the hell's up with that dude's lip?' But hearing the music, my life… totally changed. "To me it sounded like something was wrong, like it was too close to my face. Most records are all around you, but this one was right there [spreads his hand in front of his nose]. It was… unsettling. "I remember everything, from that first millisecond, that little crackle before 'ga-dun-GAR!' in 'Go Down…', to the last guitar noise in 'Whole Lotta Rosie'. "This album is in my Mercedes right now. Always is, always has been. It's my 'Let's rock!' album. Whenever I have to drive from my [now former] home in Arizona the 120 miles up to Los Angeles, this is the first thing I listen to. I've got radar and laser jammers on my car — hopefully no cop will read this and pull me over — but when I can I like to drive at 100mph, and it's always listening to this! "I remember the first time I heard the song 'Let There Be Rock', I couldn't understand what 'schmaltz' was, and I thought this guy Bon Scott sounds like he's got peanut butter stuck to the roof of his mouth. But I just started to really love this band. I started collecting everything I could get my hands on. " Bon was one of my heroes. His pants didn't fit, but for me he remains one of the bad-assed-est — if 'bad-assed-est' is a word — frontmen that there ever has been. I was really sad when he died. "I remember exactly where I was when I heard — walking across a handball court in my school. I still love and respect AC/DC. Brian [ Johnson], and I know he's an absolute star, but it's never really been the same for me since then. "When I was a kid, I had this huge poster of Angus [ Young] and he had his shirt off — schoolboy uniform on, of course — and his guitar strap looked like someone had been hawking loogies all over it. It was disgusting. And he had a big grolly in his nose, too. Years later I spoke to some guy that had worked with them who told me: 'All he does is smoke and drink, so when he plays, he turns into a headbanging snot machine; it goes all over the place!' "When we played with them a few years ago, I gave Angus a hug, and he's so tiny it was like hugging a little doll. "Thank God for AC/DC. Great band!" Who gives a shit what Dave Mustaine has to say? Do we care if he likes AC/DC? He should have been concentrating on his career instead of whining about Metallica and then maybe he wouldn't have put out shit albums like Risk and have to talk about AC/DC to get his name on the net.

if you were able to afford it! There is nothing wrong to treating yourself to something nice every now and then, or else what is the point in life?
Also journalists like to use name brands and the like because it makes people connect with em better, I bet dave didn't even make a big deal out of the mercedes things, or he just knows what makes for good writing!
I thought this was an interesting read, it is always cool to see who inspired artists, that is how I learned about some cool bands, and especially when you are learning guitar or any other instrument it is cool to know the background of the musicians and what they grew up learning to play as well.

Firstly i'd like to say Megadeth is one of my favourite bands... but jesus fucking christ do you have to report EVERYTHING Dave says or does in here and report it as "news". I guess tomorow we're gonna hear about how many times he farted yesterday???
Also... at the begining of this "newsworthy" story he says he first heard AC/DC when he met a girl whilst selling pot. Later on he says he had a poster of Angus Young on the wall when he was a kid. I begin to think he just talks for the hell of it.

AC/DC is the band that got me into hard rock & metal.
At one point I owned 26 AC/DC cd's, and I have a great deal of memorabilia. Its obvious that the Bon Scott Era was far better, but I still like all the Brian Johnson albums.
I used the entire first verse of Highway to Hell as my grad yearbook write up. Coulnt imagine anything more fitting.

i read it wrong, this contradicts what i've heard about Angus:
"Years later I spoke to some guy that had worked with them who told me: 'All he does is smoke and drink, so when he plays, he turns into a headbanging snot machine; it goes all over the place!'"
i've been an AC/DC fan since 1980 and that's what i've always heard.
maybe the "common" perception is the wrong fact but if you look at Angus in Let There Be Rock, the film, he never has a drink and never looks fucked up when interviewed.
anyways, legendary band. love AC/DC.
cheers.

Mustaine rulez, of course you all know that because you are reading what he has to say and then posting a comment. Megadeth always has been and still is the strongest musical force out there. Any thing else pales in comparison to the mighty Deth!!! Bow down to Dave and his Mercedes!! I'm glad to know that we both have the same taste in cars, except I currently own three.

Its funny that he said "mercedes" instead of "car".
But whats funnier is all your broke ass losers bitching that he said that. I mean I own a benz too (actually two of them), and Im not even a multi millionaire rockstar.
Its not like he said Lamborgini or Bentley. A Mercedes isnt like the most expensive car on earth or anyhing. You guys work at freakin mcdonalds or something to focus so much on that.

Dude who gives a fuck if hes proud of his car. Im sure you would if you could ever move out of your parents basements and be able to afford a nice car. And its a Benz, not a £100.000 Rolls or Ferrari or suming.
Anyway Dave Mustaine is a god, and weather you like him or not, you have to give him credit for being the most important musician to come out of the Thrash scene.
And yeah all the more Underground Thrash bands rule (Vio-Lence, Flotsam and Jetsam, Exhorder, Overkill, the great German Thrash Bands, etc) but theres a reason they never were as succesful as the big four. And its because they didn't write as good music.
