DIMEBAG DARRELL To Be Posthumously Inducted Into HOLLYWOOD'S ROCKWALK - Apr. 19, 2007
At noon on Thursday, May 17, 2007, guitarist extraordinaire "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott, will be posthumously inducted into Hollywood's RockWalk, the only sidewalk gallery dedicated to honoring those artists who have made a significant impact and lasting contribution to the growth and evolution of rock 'n' roll. A bronze bust of Abbott will be unveiled during the ceremony and later installed along the RockWalk posthumous inductee wall, which also includes Robert Johnson, Elvis Presley and Bill Graham among others. Abbott will be located directly adjacent to other equally accomplished musicians and innovators on the RockWalk such as Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Carlos Santana, Johnny Cash, VAN HALEN, Bonnie Raitt, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, THE RAMONES, Marvin Gaye, James Brown, Brian Wilson, Stevie Wonder and John Lee Hooker.

One of metal's finest guitar players, Dimebag Darrell Abbott was born on August 20, 1966 in Dallas, Texas. Born into a musical family, his father was a country and western songwriter and producer, Dimebag Darrell's interest in hard rock and heavy metal began to grow upon his discovery of KISS and their guitarist Ace Frehley. He entered numerous guitar competitions in the Dallas area which resulted in him winning an instrument that he would eventually become closely associated with, the Dean ML. In 1981, Dimebag Darrell along with his brother, drummer Vinnie Paul, formed what would turn out to be one of the most popular heavy metal bands of the 1990s. Beginning with "Cowboys from Hell", PANTERA touched off a string of classic metal releases; "Vulgar Display of Power" followed and with it, brought the band star status and domination in the hard rock/metal music community for a decade. The band received four Grammy nominations, platinum for "The Great Southern Trendkill", "Cowboys from Hell" and PANTERA's "Greatest Hits" and double platinum for "Vulgar Display of Power" and "Far Beyond Driven", which had its debut at No. 1 on the Billboard album chart. Released in 2000, "Reinventing the Steel" was the final studio effort from the band. Darrell and Vinnie went on to form DAMAGEPLAN, releasing "New Found Power" in 2004. During a DAMAGEPLAN performance in Columbus, Ohio, on December 8, 2004, Dimebag was fatally shot at the age of 38.

Dimebag Darrell Abbott will always be remembered as one of the most influential guitarists in modern metal music.

The induction event is free and open to the public.

i'm a Pantara fan but i'm not really sure i would list Darrell as "one of the most influential guitarists in modern metal music" or "guitarist extraordinaire". to me he was a part of a great band but he wasn't anything head and shoulders above others. good for him and his family though, hopefully his memory will live on.

to the person who suggested doing something like this for Vinnie as well, please lets not get carried away. Vinnie is still alive and you never hear anyone say that they are influenced by Vinnie or that hearing Vinnie made them take up drums or rethink the way they play the drums. Vinnie was just along for the ride, a dime a dozen drummer in a great band.

Of course he wouldn't have. It is rare that any artist within the metal community is recognized by the "outside" for their musical talents & abilities. As much as I think Dime deserves to be recognized, I must agree that his untimely death is the reason for this honor.

Long Live Dime.

---------------------------------------------------------------

let me say this:
first: the reason why i began playing drums is because of VINNIE PAUL. i do not come from a musical family what so ever and he and dime influenced me to play. I taught myself and spent hours jamming to nothing but PANTERA. to me vinnie is the man. there is always going to be someone better in someone elses opinion and everyone knows. this guy just felt he had to be the braniac and state it so eeeeeeveryone hears what they have heard 1000 fuckin times.
second: Dimebag deserves every award he gets and has gotten. he was amazing and revolutionized the southern metal sound and influenced millions in their playing. ask almost any modern metal guitarist.
Third: PANTERA fucking owned. and still fucking owns. sit down, grab an album of your choice crank that fucker up and listen to it all the way through. and when youre done do the same with FAR BEYOND DRIVEN.

CFH for fucking life

But if you think that dime is/was an overrated guitar player then you have never EVER seen the mutherfucker play live, whether in Pantera, Damageplan, or otherwise. and yes, he is getting all kinds of recognition now since he has passed on which is bit crappy considering that it most likely would not have happened if he was still here. Regardless, he was a friggin guitar god. Watch any of his videos on youtube from when he was in his glam days and watch him wail. He seriously shreds his friggin ass off. I read somewhere that they quit letting him enter guitar competitions in the greater texas area after a while because every time that he went into one he would beat everyone else out. and that is no bullshit. I saw him play in Pantera and Damageplan both live, and he could do whatever he wanted with a guitar. On the damageplan tour he did a ten minute solo that would melt your damn face off.

Watch Dimevision if you dont believe me, its only like 86 or so minutes, but it seems a hell of a lot longer because half of it is him soloing his fuckin ass off. THE MUTHERFUCKER IS BADASS.

nuff said.

Guitar playing isn't a competition. Of course there is always going to be someone more technically skilled at doing one thing versus what one guitarist can do.

As far as Dimebag goes, look at all he accomplished. When he played the guitar people listened and he wrote some kickass riffs and solos. I know there are people that aren't as recognized, but let the man get his due.

Maybe he wouldn't have been recognized when he was alive, but he deserved it more than a guy like Zakk as far as I'm concerned.

He was more to us than just a great guitar player... he was very loving and sociable... he always had time for his fans... all im saying is just because he may not be your favorite dont get on here and dirty his name... he was an awesome guitar player and man... and didnt deserve what happened to him... his love was music... and he was doing what he loved when that tradegy happened... But i dont think Dime would have wanted to go any other way... just doing what he does best... playing mad guitar riffs! RIP DIME! We Love You!
