NOVEMBERS DOOM Frontman: 'I've Been On Painkillers And Vicodin For Six Years Now' - Apr. 26, 2007
The Washington Post's Express recently conducted an interview with NOVEMBERS DOOM frontman Paul Kuhr. A couple of excerpts follow:

"Eight years ago I was diagnosed with spinal stenosis, which is a degenerative spine disease," Kuhr said. "Basically, the spine is breaking down and collapsing on the nerves in the spinal chord, so it causes tremendous amounts of pain daily. I've been on painkillers and Vicodin for six years now, and it's very trying every single day. There was a point in my life, at the lowest point, when I really felt like I couldn't live the rest of my life like this … I didn't want to live in pain for the rest of my life."

Kuhr's condition is so chronic, the 35-year-old said, "You'll see when I perform a lot, any break I get when I'm not singing, I turn around and walk back by the drum set and I lean over to try and regain strength in my spine. My headbanging days are long over; I can't do that anymore. I have pain in my neck all the way down to my tailbone. I have hair down past my ass, so people are like, 'Bang you head!' And I'm like, 'It's not going to happen.' I'm not as animated as I used to be, but I do what I can."

And despite the pain management program he's on, Kuhr said every day his agony just "gets worse. But if you deal with something every single day, your body adjusts and you kind of get used to it. It's something I deal with every day, but I think my tolerance for pain has definitely grown, because I had no choice."

I've had to deal with some back, and shoulder pain due to a pinched nerve resulting from herniated discs. I'm a lot better than I was a year ago, but I still have some slight, minor pain occasionally. but I'm sure it's only a fraction of pain this guy has to deal with every day. its gotta be rough.

ND are such a great band. They played a great set on Saturday, despite Paul's extreme pain.

My grandfather suffers from this, and it is really heartbreaking to see.

I hope one day, somehow there is a way to cure this or fix it.
On the bright side Paul, congrats on delivering another outstanding album like the Novella Resivoir. One of the best of 2007 so far.

phil anselmo, and I think joh shaffer from iced earth both had spine problems, is headbanging a profesional hazard? heavy metal is like nfl football! except no health insurance, I hope this guy from Novembers Doom is able to get real treatment and doesn't resort to measures anselmo took

I'm really not trying to be an asshole, but could it possibly be because of his size? My back hurt a lot more as a 160 pound 11 year old than it does now at a 150 pound 18 year old.

Thats actually a good point. Your weight could be a major factor in back and muscle pain. Unfortunately, Paul's disease sounds so bad that he might have some restrictions when it comes to exercise. I know alot of people do.

I have minor arthritis in my lower back, and even that can hurt real bad sometimes, so I can't imagine what this guy has to go through.

BTW, The new Novembers Doom kick ass. Saw them at Chicago Powerfest and they were awesome. Can't wait to see them in June.

That's rough. Hopefully, a time will come when he won't have to be in so much pain. It must be really hard for considering what his profession is.

The new album is awesome, by the way.

COMMENT | the size issue....

Actually I can see why people might think his size is the contributing factor but it's not in this instance. This is a disease that can happen to people of any size. His weight probably doesn't help matters any. But I've known people who had this condition or similar ones, and the problem is that when you have this debilitating condition, it makes exercise pretty much impossible, so weight gain and muscle loss becomes inevitable. It's a catch 22. Paul from ND has always been a big dude but from what I understand, since the disease started causing him major pain years ago, the weight gain got worse. I dunno if any sort of gastro-bypass thing might be an option for someone like him at this point. His doctors would probably suggest that if the weight were a major issue for his spine, I'd think?

And yeah, kinda weird seeing an article like this in the Washington Post, I agree.

I can't imagine what that kind of pain would be like. They still managed to completely tear the house down on Saturday though, and the whole band is an awesome group of guys!

Hopefully he miraculously gets better. \m/

Reminds me of the time I had back problems when in university from overwork and even then I doubt if it was even half as unbearable as what Paul's going through although there were times when it sure felt like it.

Thankfully, though, his passion for the music supercedes any notion of wanting to give up what he loves doing the most. Best of luck and all the best for a speedy recovery.
