ALICE IN CHAINS Begins Writing New Material - Apr. 26, 2007
ALICE IN CHAINS has commenced the songwriting process for a new studio album. In an online posting by The Baldy — whose job is "to travel the world with ALICE IN CHAINS and send photos, videos and blog entries back to [the webmasters] at AliceInChains.com" — he writes, "I've been [in Los Angeles] for five days, sat through three rehearsals and one demo recording session, listened to several other demos, and I can happily report that the new stuff is kicking my ass right out of my pants. Remember that these songs are still only in the early stages of being written too. Just in the time I've been here, the guys have taken a riff and worked on it and expanded it and added layers to it, and now it's practically a full-fledged song."

As previously reported, one of ALICE IN CHAINS' best-known tracks, "Rooster", will be featured on the tonight's (Thursday, April 26) episode of "Supernatural". The show airs nationally on the CW. Check your local listings to find out exactly when you should tune in and watch it.

ALICE IN CHAINS has been added to the list of artists who will take the stage for tribute performances at the second annual "VH1 Rock Honors". This year's celebration will honor the music and influence of OZZY OSBOURNE, GENESIS, HEART and ZZ TOP.

These honorees will perform live, along with additional tribute bands QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE, NICKELBACK, GRETCHEN WILSON and KEANE, on Saturday, May 12 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas.

Hosted by Bam Margera ("Jackass", "Viva La Bam"), "VH1 Rock Honors" will air on VH1 Thursday, May 24 at 9 p.m Eastern. Presenters will include Billy Bob Thornton, Robin Williams, Criss Angel, Taylor Hawkins and more.

ALICE IN CHAINS filmed its concert on October 31, 2006 in Providence, Rhode Island for a possible DVD release. The Halloween performance was two hours and forty minutes long, with the group playing additional songs for the filming. There's no indication yet of when the DVD could surface or what other features it might contain.

The group's most recent North American tour featured the reunited band playing a two-hour show that included an acoustic middle section as well as an eight-minute video tribute to late ALICE IN CHAINS frontman Layne Staley.

Staley died in 2002 after a long struggle with drug addiction that effectively put ALICE IN CHAINS on ice in 1996.

I loved Alice in Chains, and I love Jerry, Sean, and Mike and am happy that they are playing together again.

BUT...

This is NOT Alice in Chains. AIC died when Layne Staley did. They can write new music, tour, whatever, but it will never be AIC.

Layne did have a unique voice, but Jerry Cantrell wrote 75% of the songs and sang dual lead vocals with Layne on A LOT of those songs, especially from Dirt. In fact without Jerry to back him up, I imagine that peoples impression of Layne would be a lesser one. To My mind Will Duvall does a competent job with Layne's vocals, and since Layne decided to drug himself to death and abandon EVERYONE who loved him for his drug, it's FINE BY ME if Jerry want's to keep his band name the same. It's a recognition thing, and watch, this will be a GREAT ALBUM!

I am a huge AIC fan, growing up right in their heyday. And as much as I am nostalgic about Layne, I am supportive of this. First, Jerry is the core member obviously and he with Kinny and Inez are legitimately AIC as far as I am concerned. Second, I don't like Cantrell's solo stuff nearly as much as AIC; often people are better songwriters when they are constrained by other "full" members of a band with a veto. Someone with clout needs to tell Jerry what is good and bad.

If they could make an album like Facelift, it will be well worth it.

It could be just as successful if you name the group something different.

Without Layne, it's not going to feel like AIC. Sorry, but it rarely works in rock music when classic bands carry on without legendary members.

I can't wait to hear the new stuff, I bet that Will won't try to imitate Layne on new songs, he has his own signature sound that will put his own stamp on it, and with Jerry on backups (and the songwriting of course) it will be true to the "Alice in Chains" sound. AIC has had a lot of opportunities to "cash in" - these guys are hardcore musicians that love to play.

Just because one band member dies the band should quit and give up?

Jerry Cantrell obviously tried doing his own thing for a few years but his heart lies with AIC, to say that Layne was ALL AIC is a lame and unfounded comment, like someone said before take away the rest of the band and all he would of had was his drug addiction.

In my opinion Jerry Cantrell was at the very least the other 50% of AIC if not more. He has every right to carry on with the bands name.

Then a long tour ......... enter bullshit line here_________________.

You can't sell your solo shit., Its crap. Layne was the key listen to the voacls people buy the dvd and listen . Staley could out sing just about anyone I can think of.

Us AIC fans have been waiting a while to hear this news. Most people have been impatient. i for one am glad they took their time before doing this. Majority of the time, the chemistry of a band cannot come back in one night. They have taken the time to reunite with each other, do quite a few shows within the last 4 years. (some public, most private) This is how you reunite a band to get that fire back and make the music you always hope for after a long hiatus and misfortunes over the years. I really do not feel that this record will suck because they took that time to get it back.

For example, The new Smashing Pumpkins album will surely fail because... well mainly the empty promises of a FULL reunion, and more importantly, Billy is rushing everyone to get the flare back.

Looking forward to new AIC material. i don't think we'll be disappointed

I'm glad they've decided to do this. I only wish they would have done it sooner. I liked Layne Staley as much as the next guy, but the fact of the matter is band members are always replaceable. Honestly people, why should they change their name to honor the memory of a drug addict? The lineup is still 75 percent original, there are bands out there with fewer original members still making music under the same name (Cryptopsy, Megadeth, Mayhem, Motorhead, even Metallica). AC/DC continued on after Bon Scott died..... so why shouldn't Alice in Chains? Kudos to these guys for finally reconvening...... i'm looking forward to the new material.

Fuck it. I'm willing to give this guy a chance. No-one can ever replace Layne we all know that. But I don't think that's what Jerry and the rest of AIC are trying to do. This isn't going to be some lame rip-off tribute album, it's going to be an AIC album. Pure and simple.

And anyone who says that this isn't Alice in Chains, but some 'fake' version, well how can you call yourselves fans? You should be supporting and respecting their decision to carry on, not criticising it. Layne will always be a part of Alice, he had a tremendous impact on the band's music and lives. And i'm sure Jerry or anyone else for that matter won't just forget that.

Here's what I think...When Alice in Chains was formed it was Jerry, Sean, and Mike. Layne was hand picked by Jerry because of his awesome voice after the other guys were already together as Alice in Chains, and the rest is history, so to say that the Alice in Chains name should be retired is a bunch of shit. Layne was an amazing singer, no one will ever do "his" songs justice, but he was the one who was jabbing the needle in his arm. Come on people what would AC/DC be doing if not for Brian Johnson? What about Van Halen? Don't get me wrong I think that if the original singer of your band is still alive then don't get a new singer (Sepultura, Van Halen) but if he dies then by all means find someone that the band think fits the mix (Drowning Pool)

Fistly, the above poster is wrong, Mike wasn't the oringinal bassist, he joined for 'Dirt.' But whatever. I have no problems with these guys carrying on, but ditch the 'replacement' singer, and just have Jerry sing. Sure, it'll sound different, and maybe something will be missing, but I think that will lend it an authentic feel, ie, the 3 of us miss playing together and we're going to do what we can to honor the legacy of the music. So ditch that Duvall guy and just record the album and tour as a 3-piece!!

As far as who wrote the majority of what...... again.... i dont care. Sean and Jerry are the 2 originals left. Mike Inez came in after Mike Starr had to leave (for what i believe) for personal reasons. (something about too much touring and his family)

To me, this whole thing seems a lot like the
Queen + Paul Rodgers collaboration back in 2005.

I think that everyone agrees that they can't call themselves AIC if they record new material.

I am all for moving forward, but I think it would be totally disrespectful if they continued as AIC.

This is not like AC/DC or Drowning Pool or Thin Lizzy.

Even though Jerry wrote the majority of the music and lyrics, you cannot deny Layne's ability as a singer.

I do think that Layne was in a class by himself; some people think that he couldn't hold his own without Jerry, but if you go back and listen to the Mad Season record, this theory obviously proves to be flawed.

What made AC/DC and similar bands work after their original singers left was the fact that the music virtually sounded the same since. Iron Maiden still had their signature sound after Paul D'Anno left.

Besides, Sean Kinney said himself that they need to call it something else if they continue; he's sort of taking a "Bill Ward stance" if you will.

And if they possibly lost Sean because the rest of the group decided to continue as AIC, then I really think the legacy would be totally dead.

Please don't turn Jerry Cantrell into Tony Iommi here.

I'm sure that Jerry can do most of what he wants with AIC, but that doesn't necessarily make it right.

I know that Layne more or less ditched AIC for heroin, but why do we have to kep condemning him for his past problems?

There's no doubt that if a new record comes out, it will kick ass.

But we don't need to piss on Layne's grave.

If this truly isn't about the money as Sean as stated in interviews, then there should be no problem picking a new name.

And I definitely agree that GODSMACK FUCKING SUCKS COCK!!!

One last thing to consider:

The Doors released two albums after Jim Morrison died that featuring Robby Krieger and Ray Mazarek sharing vocal duties;
"Other Voices" and "Full Circle".

These albums didn't do shit, they have never been re-released, and the rest of the band likes the deny that they even exist.

Even though the "Doors of the 21st Century" happened, you can see how piss poor these decisions were.
