is it really necessary to state that Bruce Dickinson is in Iron Maiden, Tom Arraya and Kerry King are in Slayer, and Ozzy is in Black Sabbath? really- doesn't anyone who comes to this site already know those basic facts?

Dont get me wrong... the song is damn awesome. But it seems roadrunner records is rubbing off on them. But im not worried... i was one of the fortunate in NYC to chant on the new album and heard some other material... which was way better. Unbelievable, to be precise.

Not that roadrunner records rubbing off is a bad thing... its just that i hope that DT doesnt lose their true progressiveness. DT never can and never will be a truly heavy metal band... theyre just not made for just straight up heavy metal. But its good when they dip into it now and then :)

whats up with all the background vocal effect crap. it's almost ruining it for me. just let lebrae do his thing.

the vocal lines have a similar melody like Metallica's struggle within, or one of the songs off the Black album.

....who do i talk to to get back the seven minutes i just wasted? i'd hate to say it, but if this track is any indication of the overall tone of the album.... Dream Theater have officially lost it. The opening riff sounds like it was recycled from Octavarium (yawn) and the Verse sounds a little like Trivium or Metallica. Too bad i guess... maybe next time around. you won't be getting my 17 dollars this time around mike, sorry.

P.S. I know everyone has been praising the solo, but i didn't even like that.

That solo section is cool... it does follow the Train of Thought structure where its more straight forward during the verse and then progressive during the solo section..

Ye of little faith...

And if you didn't like the solo in this song, YOU DON'T LIKE GUITAR SOLOS. PERIOD. That was a hell of a Petrucci solo.

I like the song. Even if Labrie sounded like Hetfield. Hetfield wishes he could sound that good again. This song's got edge. The album is gonna be great.

Major 80's thrash vibe.

They need to take the mic away from Portnoy - his vocals are tragic.

This is a common misconception regarding many albums but here it is.

Dream Theater wrote this album BEFORE they signed to Roadrunner. Get it?

good song ...good style...going metal again like on train of thoughts...but if that song is reflective of the album , Dream Theater will be officially dethroned by Symphony X as the progmetal kings...

I like it a lot actually. Have to agree with DingusKhan. The 80's thrash influence is quite prevalent. I guess Mike's shows with Overkill had a bigger effect on him than I thought!

Dude, i've been progressively more disappointed by each Dream Theater release since "six degrees of inner turbulence." Petrucci's style now is very boneheaded compared to what he was playing from 1989 to 1995. He does mostly linear alternate picking now.... and it gets very boring very fast.... especially when stretched over a ridiculous number of bars... like in this new song, "In the name of god," and especially "As I Am." They have not progressed anywhere in nearly 7 years. Everything has been toned down... Mike's drum patterns have dumbed down, the riffing, the time changes, even La Brae's vocal range. You wanna hear guitar solos..... go listen to some Cynic, later period Death..... or even better Symphony X.

Symphony X > Dream Theater

Definitely agree with fishdontgotsnogoodmetals comments.
From what I've read, the new DT album will be very diverse with no central theme or concept. This will obviously be the "heavy tune" and will make a great show opener - serious adrenaline here...
Petrucci is at the top of his game - how is it possible that this guy keeps getting better? Saw him and Portnoy at G3 in NY a couple of weeks ago - absolutely insane. Sick chemistry.
Would have liked more LaBrie / less Portnoy on the vox, but it's a good effect for this song.
Overall, I like the sound - heavy as hell, but not trying too hard to be "dark" like on Train of Thought and thankfully not hearing any Pink Floyd like on Octavarium.
I'll give it an A-. Cannot wait for the new album/tour.
Mike - where's the CT date???

Symphony X is gay? And Dream Theater, with all those sensitive ballads is the model of heterosexuality in progressive music right? Honestly, they're one more ballad away from being Chicago, man. Oh, and also..... aside from the fact that symphony x's power ballads actually have..... i dunno..... power, they can be full on metal..... which is something Dream Theater is no good at. Top that off with the fact that they have twice the chops that the guys in DT have.

Are you serious? Why couldn't they play together here too? I wanted to actually see both bands this summer, but because of the close dates of the gigs (agust 2 and august 3), i've had to forego the Dream Theater show all together.

I didn't quite know what to think, but listening to it a second time, I love it. My God, James Myung's bass actually has some balls to it. I love that little LaBrie vocal quirk with the pan channels....fucking great. Looks like this album might be on par with Train of Thought.

Lets see Dream Theater vs Symphony X

Vocals: i prefer Russel Allen, he destroys LaBrie any day
Guitars: i like both a lot so id say tie
Bass; gotta give to myung i think he is better
Keyboards: no question there, Rudess is one of the best players out there
Drums: is one thing i think SX lacks a bit, i like DTs drumming better.

So in the end i think DT is a bit over SX, besides the most brutal fact, that Symphony X has always been more metal than Dream Theater, by much.

But hell i love both bands!!!

Haha, I love the totally Hetfield-ish vocals at the beginning! Pretty much a straight-forward rocker, comparable to As I Am. I could do without the keyboard solo (again), but as a whole, I like it.

Solid production by Paul Northfield.
