QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE's JOSH HOMME Rules Out KYUSS Reunion - May 8, 2007
Writer Joel McIver recently interviewed QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE/EAGLES OF DEATH METAL's Josh Homme for Music Mart magazine's June issue. Excerpts from the chat follow:

On the frequent offers from concert promoters to reform his previous band, KYUSS:

"The offers come in all the time. They're getting more and more expensive, and more and more elaborate. The money is crazy, but I've never been tempted – I don't really care about the money, I never have. That's not what KYUSS was about, so to punctuate the end of our sentence with that would be blasphemy. KYUSS fans are so fuckin' rad, they're fuckin' badass — but to me, reunions are just not necessary. It's not what it was, it's what it is, and KYUSS was a really magical thing — and if you weren't there, well, you weren't. That's just the luck of the draw. I don't feel the urge to do it for somebody who didn't have the opportunity to see us, or just didn't take the opportunity to see us. I'll let other bands alter their great legacies. KYUSS has such a great history that it would be a total error. I like that nobody saw KYUSS, and that it was largely misunderstood. That sounds like a legend forming to me. I'm too proud of it to rub my dick on it."

On the difficulty of touring away from his baby daughter and wife Brody Dalle (SPINNERETTE, ex-THE DISTILLERS):

"It's the hardest thing I've ever done. I'm struggling by day three. There's no way round it. I was a child before, and now I'm a man, because I'm out here for my family. My first priority is making sure that everything is OK. You gotta bleed to prevent a cut somewhere else. But I've been doing that for years, so I'm trained for that. I'm trained to swallow the shit pill."

On the future of his ongoing musical side project, DESERT SESSIONS:

"The Desert Sessions are gonna go on forever. There's no reason to stop them. No, it wasn't me that said there would be only 12 volumes — I'm gonna do 112! It's just a mix tape — the longest-running mix tape in existence. It's awesome: doing them is just a matter of making the time frame come together. I was really wanting to do one before the new album ['Era Vulgaris'] came out, but we didn't put a time frame on it and it consumed what would have been that time. I didn't want it to take away from what we were doing."

It would have been amazing to see Kyuss, but I get his point.

I had a ticket to se them in 1994 but Soundgarden cancelled so the festival was reduced to a club show with only Helmet and Rollins Band. Still, I've seen all the original members separately after Kyuss ended.

I LOVE Kyuss, and did get to see them 3 times, so I guess I can't complain. I'm not a big QOTSA fan, but I respect Josh's integrity. So many bands just can't let a good thing lie, and, as sad as it is to know that all those great songs won't be performed live again, he's right that it was a moment in time, and it's nice to just let it live on in dignity! Thanks Josh....

I totally understand where Josh is coming from, in an age where bands are taking the low road and doing pointless tours i.e genesis. and not the lambs down on broadway version either more like the invisible touch version OUCH!!! Their must be combined effort with all the members. Josh is right leave the past the past hey why don't you blast!!! Blues from A Red Sun in your car if you want that Kyuss magic back.

AWESOME band......killer show. The place was less than half full so it felt really intimate. As for Josh not needing the reunion money how about thinking about the other guys that we in the band for a change? I think John Garcia, Nick O & Brant Bjork would love to split a million dollars or TWO.....so how about them!!! End the legacy OWNING a house....being a little more comfortable??? sometimes those "reunions" turn into great and lasting things.

A Kyuss reunion would never be the same as what the magic of the music itself has brought to me. I was totally taken in by the music once I had "got it" when it was a bit too late. I searched the world to find their recordings, as well as visit the area where the band made their home and art. I discovered cool and interesting places such as "Salvation Mountain" in Niland, CA that photos taken there were used on the "Circus Leaves Town" and the EPs that came from that record. I enjoyed the serenity of all that is Joshua Tree National Park because of Kyuss's music. So many bands cannot bring that inner peace musically that Kyuss has done for me.

I bought Blues for the Red Sun so long ago, that I have the cd longbox. Kyuss toured with Danzig, Dionsaur jr., and Faith no More. I waited frothing at the mouth for one of these tours to come to my town. They never did. "KYUSS fans are so fuckin' rad, they're fuckin' badass — but to me, reunions are just not necessary." If we're so rad, how come you do nothing for us? No live cds or dvds, only expensive bootlegs. Would a reunion show really be that bad? Sin Dealer pointed out that financially the other guys haven't been as lucky. would it hurt your integrity bad to help them out? Did you ask the throng of Kyuss fans what we wanted? Do you care? If not taking money for it is so important to you, do a generator party for charity or for the other guys. I would pimp the integrity of Josh Homme for 50 cents if it ment getting to see kyuss live. Queens of the Stone age is ok, but it just sounds like kyuss on an off day, and no one will step up and tell the guitar player that he can't sing. Josh Homme will never read this, but thanks for the fuck you to your your longtime fans(as well as the new ones).

I love Kyuss, but I dont think I'd want a reunion anyhow. Well spoken of Homme, I totally agree with what he's saying.

The other guys would do it. I asked Brant one night at Motorcity in NYC and he and he would do it, and said it was basically up to Josh because he's busy with QOTSA.

I've heard three new QOTSA songs and they eat dick. It would be nice if Josh would get his nose out of "indie rock's" ass and make another good heavy Rock album.....

totally agree. That band went through several incarnations, there were some great players and I'm sure they would jump at the chance of getting together to do it again in a fucking second. I have the feeling Josh is the only one saying no, because Kyuss is a band, and not only about him.

I didn't latch on to these guys until sky valley hit. I threw that fucker on with some headphones & damn! However, I swear I saw them open for Danzig prior to that with someone else. They might have been touring under Blues for the Red Sun. My memory is clouded from the booze back then. I will say I went for Danzig, but these guys blew the roof off the place & I was like "who the fuck are these guys!" I just remember Scott Reeder & Brant were monsters on their respective instruments!

I'm not a fan of QOTSA because it just doesn't compare to Kyuss, but I can respect his reasons for not working with Nick, and not wanting to do a reunion. There's at least principales to it and it's not about the money.

So, why talking about a dead band then?
Come back alive or forget it! But who cares about the past?
No one knows kyuss today, so no one knows the legend.
There are enough kids today who don't even know the big bands of
the 90s, hearing some emo-shit, believing that crap would be rock.
So, try to become relevant again, showing them the magic
or let kyuss really die, so it will become history, grandpa Josh.
The magic I don't see has no relevance to me!
An unknown legend is unnecessary!

I saw kyuss four times and they ruled every show. and the guitar player of qotsa says a reunion would would be such and such, and well, all I really have to say about that is, I felt quite a bit of "magic" when I saw John Garcia singing with qotsa at the wiltern a awhile back and they played three songs and it WAS magic and I loved every second of it. I fullee savored every note and made the most of the performance. the next day I got a picture off the internet of it and I put it in my scrapbook and I felt sooo happy that I went to that show. and if josh homme did a tour with half a set with each band that would be awsome.

...but you know, its easy to sit back and say "I don't really care about the money" when you're currently playing in a gold selling act. I wonder if the other former members of Kyuss feel the same way.

Regardless...I was on board with Kyuss starting in 1991 by getting a free copy of "Wretch" via a radio promotion.
But it was "Blues for the Red Sun" that owned my ass.

I was fortunate to see them live...they opened a triple bill that also included Biohazard and the headlining Fishbone. Great show...

Kyuss!!!!

Josh should be a real MAN and do a limited venue reunion.....if only to HELP the other guys out!!! Shit, John Garcia either owns or just works at a vetranarian hospital in the palm desert so I'm sure he'd love some easy CA$H....we all Nick got royally fucked over.....Brant Bjork is gettin by. I heard some German dude offered over a million dollars for a KYUSS reunion???? take the money, have fun playing GREAT songs and go out in style. If Josh the Almighty can't tolerate Nick then get Scott Reader in on bass.

Who knows right????
