DAVE MUSTAINE Explains Why He Refuses To Share Stage With His 'Confessed Enemy' - May 8, 2007
J. Bennett of Decibel magazine (web site) recently conducted an interview with MEGADETH mainman Dave Mustaine. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow:

Decibel: How directly is your born-again status connected to your sobriety?

Mustaine: My sobriety… well, if you mean do I do drugs, I don't. [But] I'm not a sober person; I'll have a glass of wine once in a while. As far as being in AA, I just found it to be too dangerous for a person like me because I learned more about getting high in AA than I ever did in any drug house I was ever in. It's supposed to be founded in believing in God, but say the word "God in an AA meeting and most people's asses grow together. So I kinda just went to the source. Instead of sitting in a room with a bunch of people talking about how much dope they've split and how little I've ever done, I figured I'd go direct to God, cut out the middleman, and not have to pay my dollar every week. But I don't have anything against AA — the real AA saved my life at one point, but it couldn't take me to where I wanted to go. So as far as faith is concerned, yeah, I got saved a while ago and it's a constant walk. It's something I have to work on every day. There are people that I pray for. There's people that I pray for that I love, and there's people that I pray that they go to heaven immediately. [Laughs] But I don't have a shitlist. You might get on it, though.

Decibel: I feel like it's heading that way. You mentioned the Catholic Church earlier, though — are you Catholic?

Mustaine: No. But it's well-documented that the first corporation in the world was the Catholic Church, so that wasn't a dig at anyone Catholic or anything like that.

Decibel: That's not what I was getting at. It's just that I don't know many people "of faith" who would attest to the fact that the Catholic Church is a corporation. People seem to be pretty deluded about that.

Mustaine: Yeah, well, I'm pretty transparent.

Decibel: A few years ago, you didn't want to play shows with ROTTING CHRIST and DISSECTION. Do you have a standing policy about playing with certain types of bands?

Mustaine: It's not necessarily a policy — I just follow my heart. Before, I used to follow my head, but my heart is closer to my gut. When I saw certain things I didn't agree with, I'd turn my head the other way before. I've never believed in singing about Satan and thinking he's cool, because he's not. When I was 15, I got into witchcraft and black magic, so I've known for over 30 years the power of the dark side, and it took me forever to break those chains. There's no cool way to sing about Satan — you look like a punk. For example, you know MERCYFUL FATE is one of my favorite musical groups, but the lyrics, to me, I can't get behind them. I don't mean to shame them — it's just not my bag. As far as me playing with bands like that, I started thinking, "You know what, Dave? You're a headliner. If you don't wanna play with people that make you uncomfortable, you don't have to." Especially if they're singing about the confessed enemy of someone you believe in… I mean, what idiot gets onstage with their confessed enemy? That'd be like two hip-hop guys who wanna kill each other going out together.

Decibel: King Diamond is definitely an actual Satanist, but Satanism is kind of a put-on for a lot of these other bands.

Mustaine: You think it's a put-on.

Decibel: Yeah, definitely.

Mustaine: You say that stuff, it's real. Words are real. Remember, I was into the one who was into the black side — you weren't. Were you?

Decibel: No, but why should that make a difference?

Mustaine: To say you're a confessed Satanist? I'm not intimidated by them, because I know they're just as misguided as I was at one time. But this is something that's a spiritual war and it doesn't have any place in a MEGADETH interview. A lot of people don't really care about what I believe — they just wanna hear what I play, and I'm fine with that. As far as the situation overseas you're alluding to, as a headliner who's sold as many records as I've sold and played in front of as many tens of millions of people as I've played to over my life — and this is the sunset of my career, where I get to enjoy the remaining years of my life — I don't wanna waste that. The promoter kicked them off and I was furious. It was like, "Well, why'd you put them on in the first place? Now that they're on, don't kick them off. We'll step down; we'll play another night." I'm not ever gonna kick a band off the bill if it's something I don't agree with. If I know about it ahead of time and I agree to it and change my mind, well, that's kind of chickenshit, isn't it?

Decibel: My point was that I think some of these bands are full of shit — that you shouldn't be as concerned about their beliefs, because for some of them, it's an act. And even real Satanists don't spend very much time hating God.

Mustaine: Well, the only other band I had a problem with was from overseas and the singer was a convicted double-murderer [referring to DISSECTION] and they'd been put on the show in Israel. Prior to that, I'd made a couple of things clear to my agent: I don't want tits and ass on my t-shirts, because I think that's kind of juvenile, and as far as the Satanic stuff, I've been there, done that and I found it kind of wanting. You can be so much heavier with stuff like a nuclear bomb than a pentagram. I mean, what's scarier: VX gas or an upside-down cross? So when the information was related to me that they'd been put on the bill, I said, "You know what? We can't play this show." And they'd kicked them off. But I was like, "Oh, my god, why did you do that?" Because that just makes me look like a fanatic and it doesn't really show the love that I have in my heart these days that I'd like to be able to share with these musicians. And this is really a fitting climax to anyone's career, because what do I have left to gain, my friend? A Grammy and getting into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Everyone thinks it's great to gets your hands stuck in cement in front of Guitar Center [on Sunset Boulevard in L.A.], but those are the things I'm looking for. I've got everything else I want: I've got a beautiful wife and kids — I've got a new puppy, for Chrissakes — everything in my life is looking up. I'm going to Hawaii next month to work on my tan for the next tour and see if I don't turn into a piece of flash paper. Whenever I go to the beach, it smells like pork rinds because I start to burn instantly.

On one hand I admire someone for standing up for what they believe. However, he is denying bands a place and time to play, besides he is being a little be-yotch. I cannot believe what a total douche bag he has become. He whines more than D-ron and RATM combined. I have to review the new MD disc for work but I really don't want to waste my time on them anymore.

Glad to see a journalist that isn't afraid to change the subject when it gets difficult. It makes me want to read his other interviews.

It's sure interesting to watch Mustaine back himself out of all the corners he has placed himself in. He just wants to be treated normally, but that's difficult when you've been as controversial as he has over the years. I can't help but read his interviews; they're just so damn entertaining.

That's bullshit...you can't claim ignorance. If you refuse to play with a satanist band who's the promoter gonna choose? Megadeth or some smaller underground band? Why can't you just take the high ground and say "I don't agree with what you're saying but everyone's free to express their opinion."

You don't even have to see the other bands perform, just use the same stage they did a few hours before. Fucking childish.

I love the way Blabbermouth posters think.. (not really).

To the guy above who bashes Mustaine for 'denying bands a place and time to play', who obviously didn't read the article that preceded his own post! Mustaine never asked bans not to be on the bill; we only exercised his option not to be there as well. Promoters made that decision.

Calling Mustaine 'lame', or a 'freakshow', or whatever because of his comitted beliefs is what's LAME. Seems to me, for anyone to do what he's done and comment publicly about it, ESPECIALLY one in Mustaine's unique position, is anything but lame. It takes BALLS. Balls, and originality. Sadly, both are in short supply in the music scene in general, and even more so in metal.

Here's how the average metalhead seems to think --

If you think your opinion puts you in the majority, then you claim that as evidence that the person on the other side is wrong, because he's obviously 'out-voted'.

On the other hand, when a metalhead perceives himself to be in the minority, he lashes out at the other side for being 'sheep', 'weak minded', or what have you.

When a band sells 436 copies of their new CD, if a metalhead doesn't like them, he attributes those sales figures to that bands lack of talent. If he's a fan, he calls them 'underground', too cool for mass consumption. In any case, of a metal band sells a lot of copies, they're now branded a SELL OUT. In the meantime, fans continually bitch in this forum when a band they like doesn't hit their town on tour, or never gets played on MTV or the radio. You love to build them up, only to tear them down. It proves that the real draw of a metal band for most is the fans' perception that they are somehow 'rooting for the underdog', not the music. Once that band's not an underdog anymore, screw them -- whether you still like the music or not. Gets right to the core of the average metalhead. There's some wierd psychology in place with many in this scene that prevents them from thinking clearly and INDEPENDENTLY, even as you implore others to do for themselves. Ironic. Ironic and pathetic. Who are the real sheep?

So, as for being 'open minded', as so many are demanding Mustaine to do -- consider your own words. Here he is, explaining that he has ALREADY lived on both sides of that track - he has the perspective of experience, and has made his recent decisions based on that. He clearly states that one way was not working for 30 years, and his new life works much better. He's allive, healthy, and happy. Sounds like YOU need to be more open minded. How do any of you know that you're right and Mustaine's wrong? About anything?

Last, and this is too easy. If you don't like it, don't read it. Don't buy the new CD. Don't do anything. Just move along. Do you think bitching aloud is going to influence this man? I doubt it.

Good post......but really that kind of thinking isn't limited to "metalheads". Building something up and then tearing it down is apparantly all the rage.

"Metalheads" like to play the intelligent outcast role, but really within their own group they're seldom different than the types of people that they claim to despise. Funny how that works. Then again, in every group of people you're gonna have stubborn, closed-minded assholes who think their shit don't stink.

Behold the flames rise

It is always amusing to see all the people say how God is not real, brainwashing etc.

I just hope that all of you who claim not to believe in a creator of some type have some kind of theory of how we got here. Big Bang you say? Evolution? If you believe either of these ideas, that means every living thing, every tree, every bird, every blade of grass, every person was created by accident. Are you here by mistake?

That's the essence of Pascal's Wager.

"You should live your life and try to make the world a better place for your being in it, whether or not you believe in God. If there is no God, you have lost nothing and will be remembered fondly by those you left behind. If there is a benevolent God, he may judge you on your merits and not just on whether or not you believed in him."

Anyways; it just what they try and get you to think; "You are powerless, its a sickness. Give yourself up to God, only a higher power can help" jak jak jak. Bullshit.

And since I can't be arsed to discuss with someone who's so lacking in knowledge, let me just paste you the obvious:

Some prejudices about witchcraft:

"Witches worship Satan."
This is not true. The reason is because we don’t believe in Satan. It is impossible to worship someone whom you don’t believe in.

"White Witchcraft is good magick, and Black Witchcraft is evil magick."
There is no such thing as Black or White Witchcraft. Technically, all Witchcraft is good. Only people can be good or bad. It is not meant to be used to do bad things, some people just use it to do bad things. Kind of like the phone. It’s a good thing because it helps you communicate with other people, but if you use it to harass people then it would be bad.

Got it you complete idiot? I doubt it. You probably will try to look less like the fool you are by trying silly comebacks and making stupid remarks.
Be my guest ;)

Blessed be.

I don't believe in god or satan, How do you even be a satanist? maybe you could read an Anton Lavey book? I mean no one really worships satan. I would say the bands who do, are really just insane like the early black metal like the drummer faust who murdered someone, but people murder in the name of god. I would agree more with Kerry King than Dave, but Dave Mustain is a punk! He even covered a sex pistols song, Dave is just outspoken and will piss someone off, and I think its great! keep pissing people off Dave! Remember when he almost couldn't make it out of Ireland for running his mouth?

King Diamond is not a Satanist. He was given membership in a satanist cult or something like that, but he doesn't believe in or worship satan.

Megadeth, like Dave said, are in a position to not have to play with bands they don't want to play with. If I was the head of a metal band, I would refuse to play with any band I didn't like as long as it didn't mean the difference between being fed for the next month or not. It's not like he's preventing bands from playing either. People should be more concerned about Dave getting back to kicking ass like he did back in the day than what he believes or whose music he chooses to subject his fans to at shows.

Pretty Good points above. I can agree with some of them. As far as not liking a band when they sell many records and labeling them a SELL OUT, I would disagree. A Long time ago... when Megadeth was starting out ,I wanted the band to succeed and I tried to turn everyone I knew onto them. I was happy Dave was selling LOTSA records. And making it. It was only when he released a "beer coaster" called Risk that I was offended. It was not records sold, it was content of the record. By the way...Who cares who is more evil than who? Listen to M.O.D 's Satan's Cronies. That will sum up Satanists for ya.

Your ignorant screeds defending the existence of God are what is laughable. And you didn't even properly read what I wrote. I never once said science has explained everything. In fact I stated the opposite. But religion hasn't explained a damn thing. It just puts forth ridiculous mythologies much in the same ways ancient greeks developed stories to explain how the sun winds around the Earth.

But you can't argue with a believer because belief requires what is called "presupposition."

believer: There's a magic elf on my head
nonbeliever: no there isn't. I don't see anything.
believer: that's because he is invisible!
nonbeliever: I don't feel anything either.
believer: that's because he's not composed of matter. He's magic.
nonbeliever: Why should I accept that. What evidence do you have of this elf's existence?
believer: the existence of the elf is not something that demands evidence. We accept it, then provide evidences of his existence.
nonbeliever: What evidences are you referring to?
believer: my elf is the cause of all rain.
nonbeliever: but what are the evidences of the elf's existence?!
believer: When it rains you are seeing my elf in action. What more evidence could you ask for?

It's futile.

So how could atheism be destroying science?! That's the most ridiculous assertion I think I've ever heard. You obviously aren't much of a thinker. And your pitiful attempts at painting a picture of me as a "boy" are even more amusing. I'm well into my thirties, college educated and can accept reason, as opposed to your warped way of thinking.

Just as long as they teach them from every possible point of view, Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Satanism, and while we're at it why don't we teach them Greek and Roman mythology as well as any cults spawned from each so every single rediculous and absurd religious point of view is thrown at them, that way the kids have heard "all sides" of the argument and can only then freely choose what they believe. There is no "both sides." Not allowing it in school is preserving thier freedom to choose you dolt. It isn't being pushed on them, I'm sure most American children get enough of that at home anyhow.

You are lacking a solid case also, Amongst.The.BlabberBots so STFU.

When it comes down to it, it doesn't matter what kind of fucking "scientific scholars and researchers" support "intelligent design." It's still not science. It's based on belief and faith, science is based on measurable statistics and observation. Just because a scientist happens to believe in "intelligent design" doesn't make is science any more than it makes his or her preference is cereal a science. Lets look at your logic. A scientist prefers Froot Loops over all other cereals. Therefore eating the cereal that scientist prefers is science. Just because a scientist believes it, doesn't make it science.

As has been said before, Mustaine has the right and ability to choose who he plays with and where he plays, if he doesn't want to, he doesn't have to. He's not like some spoiled child getting his way. He is someone that has worked for quite a while doing what he loves and has earned that choice.
