METALLICA's HETFIELD: 'For Some Reason, We Like It Loud'

METALLICA recently upgraded their Northern California rehearsal studio, replacing their old monitors with Meyer Sound's new MJF-212A self-powered stage monitors. The band also brought in six M'elodie ultracompact high-power curvilinear array loudspeakers and a 600-HP compact high-power subwoofer.
"As we started pre-production for the new album we needed PA and monitor upgrades. The speed and ease of set up of the Meyer gear is unbelievable. We truly took the monitors out of the box and plugged them in and we were done. That never happens," says METALLICA's equipment manager, Zach Harmon. "Over the years sound companies have struggled to keep METALLICA happy. Meyer has managed to meet and exceed the band members' expectations."
Vocalist and guitarist James Hetfield uses a pair of MJF-212A monitors, while lead guitarist Kirk Hammett and bassist Rob Trujillo each use a single MJF-212A.
"The MJF-212A stage monitors are able to cut through and still sound full. I can hear and feel my voice above the wall of 'TALLICA," says Hetfield. "For some reason, we like it loud!"
The band's two stacks of three M'elodie cabinets per side serves the whole band well. "The M'elodies are great," says Mike Gilles, the band's studio engineer. "They're loud, clean and transparent, with lots of headroom and excellent dynamics. And they sound very natural, even without any EQ.
"Meyer's self-powered setup really answers the needs of a smaller rehearsal space," adds Gilles. "Setup is easy and flexible, and it's nice to ditch the fan noise and the amp racks, too. Meyer Sound is the obvious choice for any professional. It's great to have equipment that adapts to the room, instead of the room having to accommodate the equipment."
The band used Meyer Sound's MILO high-power curvilinear array loudspeakers and MICA compact high-power curvilinear array loudspeakers during their 2006 "Escape from the Studio Tour" dates in Estonia and Holland, and were reportedly impressed enough to check out the smaller M'elodie arrays for their rehearsal space. "METALLICA demands the best," Gilles concludes. "Meyer Sound comes through with maximum output, clarity, and headroom, whether it's a mega-venue or a personal rehearsal space."
On July 1, METALLICA will head out on their "Sick of the Studio 07" tour in Europe with Meyer Sound equipment.

While I love all the old Metallica stuff, and even thought Load was a good hard rock album (not metal), this is a commercial. It is chock full of testimonials and endorsements. Commercials come in many forms, just like the ones in magazines where you think it's an article following a party but then it turns out to be a beer ad. This is an ad.

to me that a lot of people (of course not only on this site) bitch about the current day Metallica because they/we lost a band that used to be good at some time in their career and I understand the "frustration" in that... sometimes people praise someone that is dead and used to be good, like say Elvis.
For me like many others Metallica finished after the Black Album, it's rare I talk about Metallica anymore, but I would go to oneof their concerts I have to admit, because I'm sure it would be fun good. The reason I think they're still really big today is partly because of what they used to be and also because of the newer fans who buy them together with bands like say Oasis, The Darkness etc. the kind of people who throw CD's in the shopping trolley at the end of their list at the grocery store.
Now, I hope that people who bitch about current day Metallica and like some good thrash power metal are people who support bands like Nevermore who are and have always been ACE!!!

I work for a production company and Meyer really does make great shit for live sound. EV used to and now they don't.

In my opinion its not loud enough, because you can't hear the shit you made in the past 20 years!!!! QUIT!!!! and give the last three members of the big four (Anthrax, Megadeth, Slayer) a chance to success!!! Because they were( and always)be better than you!!! it's understandable that this has become such a long, acrimonious post. There are a lot of justified bad feelings surrounding (me)Tallica's degeneration in the last 17 years after the greatness that they created in the eighties.
But its inadequate to "vent" on this site to express our frustration with this band or to take our frustration out on each other.
The best way to bring about Justice for All on this matter is for metal fans to stop attending this band's concerts and to stop repeatedly buying their albums or DVDs in the tender hope that this time around they may have put out something worth listening to. (Lets face it, like it or not, everyone's going to hear what they put out any way merely by virtue of listening to radio/cable/internet)
As a result this band would soon be known as conventional sell outs who entertain teeni-boppers, yuppies, and fratboys, a reputation that they surely deserve. They may even decide to change their name from "Tallica" to the even more appropriate "Tattle-Tella" !

Will you people stop sucking Dave Mustaine's cock? Metallica never needed Mustaine, I mean he has a whole 1 and a quarter albums of influence on Metallica, if that. Master of Puppets, arguably the greatest metal album of all-time had nothing to do with Mustaine whatsoever. He contributed to two songs from Ride the Lightning, the only album who had that much influence on was the juvenile Kill 'em All.
And that guy who said Anthrax, Testament, Slayer, Megadeth, and Pantera never changed...a big LMFAO! Everyone of them changed and only Testament was heavier afterward. Pantera changed from album to album but Reinventing the Steel was thier worst and least heavy. What a douche.

Most of them weren't. I was only 5 or 6, but alot of people feel they have to prove thier "metalness" by jumping on the ultra trendy Metallibashing bandwagon. Alot of kids nowadays spew forth thier "Metallica are sellouts" venom and have heard very little of thier pre-Black Album material and really have no idea why they're saying it. They all jumped on the wagon with the few disgruntled hippie Metallica fans from the 80s who want Master of Puppets part II, III, and IV. Its pathetic.

Also, Metallica tours relentlessly; much more than most bands, and in thier prime(age-wise), NOBODY toured like they did. That's why it takes them so long to record and always has. Thats also why they're the success they are today, hard work and touring.
