STEVE VAI Unveils New Band STRING THEORIES - May 23, 2007
Legendary guitarist Steve Vai has announced the formation of his new band, dubbed STRING THEORIES. It is as follows:

Steve Vai - Guitar
Jeremy Colson - Drums
Dave Weiner - Rhythm Guitar
Bryan Beller - Bass
Alex DePue - Electric and Acoustic Violin, Keyboards
Ann Marie Calhoun - Electric and Acoustic Violin, Viola, Banjo and Keyboards

In other news, Vai has issued an open letter regarding the lineup changes. An excerpt follows:

"I wanted to give you all an update on the change up in the band for the tour in support of 'Sound Theories Vol I & II'.

"I have been tremendously fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with some of the greatest and most appropriate players in the world for my band. Having said that I am always looking for ways to add new colors and approaches to the music and changing up the band is necessary in regard to this.

"Although I like to change the band up every two or so years, for the last six years I worked with THE BREED consisting of Jeremy Colson on drums, Dave Wiener on guitar, Tony MacAlpine on guitar and keys and Billy Sheehan on bass. This band was a blessing on so many levels. The obvious musical skills they are capable of speaks for itself. But the personal chemistry, touring atmosphere and bond that was formed with this band can only be known by those in the band. In my book THE BREED is unbeatable in this realm.

"Reflecting on this band dynamic has made it tremendously difficult for me to make the decision to change it up. Actually, my intention was to put the band on hold for a while, as it would be nice to have the option to go back to it at some time in the future."

has hands down one of the worst guitar sounds ever. and some of the stuff he comes out with is fruity beyond belief he was alright in DLR's band though.

I agree, never liked VAI even if I tried, and I love Ibanez, Satriani, etc. But VAI just doesn't do anything for me.

I love Steve Vai.

For me personally, he ups the ante big time for guitar playing and also being a human. I would love to meditate with him for a half hour then just watch him practice. That would be a great contest prize or whatever in my opinion.

It takes a certain breed to apreciate Steve Vai's Music.

I personaly think its great, but I can see why some/many people would be turned off by his sound.

For the most part, I think Vai fans are the same people that like Zappa, Primus, Buckethead, Jeff Beck & other artists that are a little more "Out There".

In any event, I have my tickets to see him in Vancouver on this tour, and it will be the 4th time that I have caught him live. Its too bad that Billy Sheehan will not be with him, but im sure this line up will do a great job, seing as though Vai only works with top notch musicians.

I always liked Vai but I really started to appreciate him on a whole other level when I saw him on 3 different occasions with THE BREED. Seriously, hearing Steve play 'For The Love of God' live is one of the most touching musical moments you could ever experience. For all the flash Vai is an incredibly feel oriented player now.

As far as this new 'no-name' band is concerned - me thinks Steve wanted to save some dough on salaries first and foremost. These new cats will play for less than Sheehan and MacAlpine.

Hands down best guitarist ever. Its cool to see he kept Jeremy around. He should have gotten rid of Dave W and kept Billy S.
Either way he's still the best. His shows are great. Can't wait for some new material from him.
