METALLICA's KIRK HAMMETT: New CD Is 'Best Album We've Done In Fifteen Years'
- May 30, 2007
|
|
Austria's Krone.at recently conducted an interview with METALLICA guitarist Kirk Hammett. A rough English-language translation of the interview (which was published in German on the Krone.at web site) follows: Krone.at: We are looking forward to METALLICA's "Sick Of The Studio '07" tour. Has the itching in your fingers started, yet? Kirk Hammett: Oh yeah, summer time is always a good time to get out and do some shows. It's the time of the festivals and the weater is nice and warm, everyone's in a good mood. It's really fun for us and really convenient to go out and do some shows in the summer. It isn't so much that we're sick of the studio as it is, we just wanna go out and play and have some fun. And not lose touch of what we are, being a live band. It seems we were in the studio for the last two years. Although we did play some shows last year, but it still seems like we've been in the studio forever. Krone.at: So it's kind of a withdrawal symptom… Kirk Hammett: Yes, exactly. We need treatment! Krone.at: I got the pleasure to see the show of yours on last year's Novarock festival. The one were you had Lemmy Kilmister and that guy from ALICE IN CHAINS on stage… Kirk Hammett: Yeah, I remember. That was fun… Krone.at: You know, people still talk about that concert here. Was is that terrific from your point of view as well? Kirk Hammett: Well, whenever we can get Lemmy on stage and play a couple of songs with him, that's always a terrific thing. 'Cause Lemmy, he's the guy, one of the grandfathers of heavy metal. Krone.at: Do you remember some other things about Austria or from that day? Kirk Hammett: Let's see. Well, we played a series of songs from the "Masters of Puppets" album, we played with Lemmy and then we left. (laugh) But Austria is just a beautiful place, Vienna's a beautiful city with a lot of history and beautiful museums I must say. I always love coming here for sure… Krone.at: I can hardly imagine you strolling through a Viennese museum… Kirk Hammett: Yeah, I've been to a couple of them. I am the museum kind of guy, believe it or not! Krone.at: Okay, got me convinced. Why "Sick Of The Studio" anyway? Would you say that you're addicted to cheering crowds? Kirk Hammett: Totally! If I played my guitar and I looked up, do I wanna see the other three guys of the band or do I wanna see 30,000 cheering people? (laugh) It depends on what mood I am in. If I am in the mood to do some creative things, write some songs, record an album, then I'd rather look into the rest of the band. But if I'm in the mood to just rock out and really have fun and play our best material, I'd rather look up and see a 30,000 fans out there. Krone.at: You're taking a lot of bands on you tour, most of them are American but all the concerts take place in Europe. So, is our continent a better place to rock your ass off? Kirk Hammett: Absolutely! You know, Europe in general is a lot more appreciative of heavy metal than other regions. Heavy metal never really went away in Europe, it took kind'a step aside though. Whereas heavy metal in America was popular fifteen years ago, then it ran out of popularity and now it's just popular again. I mean, you go where people appreciate your music. I don't wanna say there isn't anyone who doesn't appreciate the music in the states — I'd just say that there are more people in Europa appreciating our music and heavy metal itself. Krone.at: Is there a difference in the temper of the people as well? Kirk Hammett: When we come over to Europe the audiences usually go nuts! (laughs) They are very passionate about our music. We can tell — it's very obvious to us, when we play songs how the audience reacts to our music — the Europeans just go nuts! They are a lot more informed about the band, they know more about the band and its history. Also about the music and the lyrics. It's more than just popularity, in Europe they really go out and try to get to know the band. Krone.at: Can you tell me some things about the new album you're working on? Kirk Hammett: I think it's the best album we've put out in, say, fifteen years. Krone.at: Oh, but that rules out quite a lot of work you've done in the past! Kirk Hammett: Yeah, it's our eleventh studio album, but it feels like our sixth. It's just a really spectacular range of songs. This time we're not afraid to refer to our past music in order to create future music. People will see that we've kind of embraced our old vocabulary again and are using that vocabulary to express new things. I'm super excited to make this album, finish it and release it — 'cause then we can go out and play it to the people. We might have stretched our cores a little too much in the last fifteen years, but we've always came back to what we originally are and have been. I think with this album we're definitely going a little more back into our roots. Krone.at: Does this mean, you're heading from "St. Anger" as a start further into, let's say, the raw meat!? Kirk Hammett: Yeah, it's super raw! There are some songs on that album that are so fast, that James and I kinda look at each other and go, "Ouch! Our wrist are gonna fall off." There are a lot of really, really fast songs, a whole lot of really heavy stuff. We changed our approach to writing the songs, all of us were working on the material this time. We also changed our tuning. With "St. Anger" we had the guitars really low. This time, we tuned the guitars back up to what they originally were for the first five albums. Because we've done that, James' voice sounds more like it did in the '80s than it did in the '90s. There's a lot of changes that we've made, but I believe that they are all for the better. Krone.at: Was there a need to go back to the roots and avoid melodies and slow stuff because of the rise of bands like 30 SECONDS TO MARS, for example, or some other emo, nu metal, whatever you may call it band? Kirk Hammett: Yeah, you know. I don't really understand what emo, the description means… Krone.at: Well, me neither… Kirk Hammett: Yeah, every time when I ask my friends about those things, they give me answer that simply doesn't explain anything. (laugh) I'll tell you, there are some melodic songs that we've written, that do have a lot of melody. I myself would like to see this songs go on the album. But wheter they do or not remains to be seen. We do have a lot of songs, but only nine or ten will make it on the actual album. But there definitely are some songs that are in some ways slower and melodic — but they do get heavy at some point during the song. Krone.at: Your music often deals with anger, rage and feelings — regarding the emotional side, it probably does more often than a classic opera. Do you think, especially yours, is a good way to express rage, deal with anger and just lose it? Kirk Hammett: Yeah, right. I totally agree. I know that when I am just really mad, really pissed of and I wanna take it out on something, I know that playing this music just makes me feel so much better, because I can just listen to music and scream and yell an thrash around — and afterwards I feel much better. I feel much better than going to Wal-Mart, picking up a gun and going to a high school shooting thirdy people. You know what I mean? The thereapeutic side of music is so tremendous and valuable, because it keeps people from doing drastic things and drawing measures. You know, if all people would go to a heavy metal concert from time to time, there would be a lot off less crime in the world. People will always have to get rid of their anger, and there will always be heavy metal living with them. Krone.at: We're looking forward to you eleventh studio album, like you said. METALLICA turns 26 this year; what is it that still drives you to take on the challenge of pushing the limits, your career and the heavy metal genre itself? What's the competition? Kirk Hammett: I think the comepetition is trying to compete with what you've done in the past. Competing with yourself. We've been doing this for so long, like you said, twenty-five, twenty-six years — I lost count. But I can't fix a toilet, Lars can't fix a vehicle — James probably can. (laugh) We make music and we wanna make the best music out there. We wanna make music that holds on his own and is creativly stimulating. To me that's the challenge, coming up with something new and creative. Creating great music and then go out there and have fun with. To me, that's the real competition to see if we can do it better than we did last time. In the past, I'll be the first one to admit, we haven't done a few times not as good as we used to. At least, we hadn't done it as good as the previous time. But the fact that we still wanna do it is really important. We still wanna be able to go on tour and make albums and just do the best that we possibly can. Krone.at: But from this point of view, it's a neverending story, isn't it? Can you imagine, just imagine, putting an end to it at some time in the future? Kirk Hammett: Well, that's a good question and I don't know if I can answer that!? THE ROLLING STONES — Keith Richards is sixty years old and is still doing it, and I can tell that he loves doing it. Mick Jagger, Ron Wood — those guys are still having a lot of fund. As long as they can do it — they are pushing the age-limit to do this sort of things. If Keith Richards is sixty years old and still doing it — why can't I just do when I am sixty years old? It might be kind of funny playing "Seek and Destroy" when you're sixty. But if people still wanna see us playing "Seek and Destroy" when we're sixty years old — I'll do it in a heartbeat! Krone.at: When was the last day you can think of, when you didn't touch any guitar? Kirk Hammett: Mmh… probably last week. And the reason for that was, my baby-son. I was doing baby stuff all day… Krone.at: At least it's a good excuse… Kirk Hammett: Yeah! (laugh) I still try to play as much guitar as I possibly as much as I can. Now that we're in the studio, I try even harder. Krone.at: I was standing right in the middle of the crowd during that concert of yours last year on Novarock festival. What I noticed was, that people began to ball up their fist, as soon as you conquered the stage. Before, with all the other acts, people just did this yeah-thing with the two fingers stretched away. Do you have an explanation for this? Kirk Hammett: They believe in us. That's the only explanation I can give. They believe in the power of the music, in the fact that we can deliver it. They believe in what he have to say musically and lyrically. I think that's it. Either that, or they were really mad at us. (laugh) No, I'm joking. They really believe in us and what we have to say. And that's good, because we're working really hard and it's good, seeing other people recognizing what we believe in and at the same time taking on this believe. It's like the most beautiful and — not only is it beautiful, it has such integritiy. It's a great and powerful thing. I feel very fortunate to be in a space were complete strangers show you their belief in what you're doing. Krone.at: Heavy metal associated or combined with a distinctive style of clothing, of behaviour and appearance. You know, the leather trousers, the band-t-shirts, and so on; what do you think is most fascinating about the genre, the music and the people in heavy metal? Kirk Hammett: Again, people believe in it. It's because people are outcasts. There are lot of outcasts, a lot of disaffected people, a lot of people who don't really fit in for whatever reason or another. You know, becoming a part of a movement or a musical movement like heavy metal gives people who never really fitted in a tense to fit in. Heavy metal provides a look, an attitude, a way of thinking and a way of drinking (laughs) for people who don't fit into the normal patterns of life. That's why heavy metal attracts so many different kinds of people. That's why I think heavy metal is truly understood all over the world. Unlike Latin music, for example, which can hardly be understood if you don't belong to that culture or at least know it very well. Heavy metal is not attached to any sort of ethnic idea or some sort of tradition; although it is a tradition in itself, but it's not traditional. You can come from anywhere, Africa, Australia or Argentina and hear heavy metal and unterstand it. Again, that's the most powerful thing about heavy metal. It's just an incredible thing for me to watch, to go travel the world and see all these different kinds of people, rushing into one kind of music and one kind of attitude. It's amazing. Heavy metal is a very human type of music. Human! I just love it! Krone.at: Since we talked about looks and feel… Last question: How long are you having that haircut of yours? Fifteen years, twenty years? Kirk Hammett: Are you saying, when am I gonna cut it? No, you mean, if I wanna maintain this look, is that what you're saying? Krone.at: Yeah, basically… Kirk Hammett: Well, I'm wearing long hair since the first day I can think of. No, I'm not gonna cut it! But it starts to fall out… Krone.at: So, with sixty, you're gonna play bald — but loud… Kirk Hammett: Yes, (laugh) bald and loud, loud and bald…. Krone.at: Thank you for the interview, Kirk. Kirk Hammett: Yeah, see you in Austria! (Thanks: The 4 Horsemen)

"Yeah, it's our eleventh studio album, but it feels like our sixth. It's just a really spectacular range of songs. "
Didn't they say the same thing about St. Anger before it came out?
I'll believe it when I hear it. I take a 3 strikes and you're out rule with studio albums. Load was strike one, Re-Load was strike 2 and St. Anger was the strikeout to end all strikeouts.
Oh well, I can always just pop in their old stuff anyway. :)

All the Metallica bashings, yet they can still a sell thousands of seats wherever they play.
I hope they're new release is a return to their roots, especially after Load, Re-Load and St. Anger. I have not been excited about Metallica in years but I will certainly give it a real listen before bashing.

Yeah no shit. All they need to do to make it better that load, re-load and st. anger is to take a dump inside the cover and ship it to the stores. I listened to RTL last night, now that's an awesome album. But unfortunately metallica just don't have it any more. I don't blame them either, they got rich and famous and moved on. Shit happens and the old albums are still good

Kirk, ol' buddy ol' pal...it better be. If there's even one track on there without a solo, I'll just toss it. You're a fretboard wizard, man. And you're the only member of Metallica I have respect for. Rob doesn't count cuz' he's new. Please, please, please please, please, in the name of every god ever invented and all that is metal, please be telling the truth. If this IS as good as you say, I'm sure we'll forget about St. Anger...eventually. And Lars, keep your drumsticks out of the pots and pans, you're not four anymore. Jiminy fuckin' cock herpes...

Happy to hear about the guitar tuning. Hetfield should sound better. And lest we forget, Rubin is producing. He has a great track record. This could be a damn fine album.
But yeah, I will admit I wont be holding my breath for this one. Sadly.

yeah I know...load...reload and St. Anger sucked (except for Until It Sleeps) but every other album has been amazing and groundbreaking. Also, Metallica shreds Megadeth any day of the week. The strongest thing Megadeth did was Rust In Peace. Plus Dave needs to learn how to stop preaching all his views all the time its frikin annoying. I would let Kirk talk my head off all day long at least he is mellow. I really do hope the new CD turns it all around for them because they are still one of the greatest bands in the world and you all know it. Also, who cares if they sued Nabster. Nabster and other ways of pirating music has basically killed metal and the music scene alltogether, making it impossible for any new metal bands to even think about making it in the business. All you kids need to save up your allowance and go support music before its gone forever!

I dont get this "misstrust", when they talked about the Loads they said it would be bluesy and more jammi, and so it was, and I loved it btw. With St.Anger they said it would sound "nasty, raw" and that it would be alot more heavy than their last 2-3 records. Thay have always told the truth as fas as I know, maybe many of you get your info from the wrong people.

I look forward to, but this is one of them. Yeah I remember Lars saying St. Anger was their heaviest album to date. But after hearing it on the radio it's the only Metallica I didn't buy. That and the TSO compilation.
But the band has almost seemed humble in recent interviews and I hope that's the sign we need for this band to return to it's roots.
Oh and if you used to like a band and now you trash talk them, then you are a fuck stick. Bottom line. NOBODY in their musical careers has hit a home run everytime. If you don't like a band then you are an idiot for wasting your time telling other people your opinion. Go pick up a rock, it would be more productive.

After playing songs at 120 BPM, of course playing at 121 will make your wrist fall off.

...but I used to be a Metallica fan since the release of Master Of Puppets in 1986. Next to Iron Maiden, they were my favourite metal band up to and party including the black album (Holier Than Thou, My Friend Of Misery, The Struggle Within).
Is there any hope after 15 years of "'tallica" bullshit? No more Oasis influences, boring country songs and downtuned one finger riffs? Kirk sounds pretty humble here, obviously he wasn't too pleased with the direction of "'tallica" during the last decade and especially on that horrible last album either.
So Rick Rubin made them play in standard E tuning again? That would be a crucial element to regaining their "classic" sound, although these subpar two new songs still feature the dreadfully uninspired twang-y downtuned riffs of the "'tallica" era.
But if Rick Rubin brings in Andy Wallace (the sound god) as engineer and mixer and forces the band to drop all uninspired compositions (like the new songs I and II) and write better songs, there might be hope. But only then. Maybe. Unlikely.

Don't call others morons with your obscure EP/single garbage when you've left out major releases like Garage Inc. and, if you want to get granular, how about that Japanese One EP? It has 2 studio songs on it? Does that make it a studio album? How about every import "maxi-single" they put out? The "Motorheadache" album? Get your head out of your ass.

I will cry tears of sheer amazement if this is true,I'm not a basher of Load and ReLoad, both contain some pretty solid songs, none of which are undoubtedly metal but very good nonetheless.
St.Anger was like that album that shouldn't have happened, shitty sound and production were the least of its problems.
I think with Rob on board and Rubin there it will make some difference but knowing production like I do since I'm employed in the field I think people that can't see Metallica's part in the "problem" need to quit dogging Bob Rock and give Metallica some shit for it as well.
It takes 2 to tango and Metallica willingly gave in to Bob or vice versa.
I expect better than St.Anger but won't expect a masterpiece.

Of course,it's not trendy anymore to not have any guitar solo's. Or "trash can" drums. Maybe we'll get to hear some good 'ol country again?
Seriously though, how many metal bands from the 70's & 80's are still releasing great albums? Not too many. It's like a disease bands get after their first 5 albums & there's no cure, obviously!

Because the reason they hired Bob Rock on TBA was because they liked the sound on "Dr.Feelgood" so much.
I also noticed Wayne Isham did the "Sandman" video & possibly more 'tallica videos and that's the guy The Crue have used on all their videos from Dr.Feelgood and I think earlier vidz too!

TOO LATE.
"Whereas heavy metal in America was popular fifteen years ago, then it ran out of popularity and now it's just popular again."
Gee, would this explain your departure from Heavy Metal? That trend sounds like Metallica's career. It's not popular, so let's not play it. It's now popular, so lets try to start playing it again. How fuckin' trendy.
You know, I want to like Metallica, but they make it too hard for me. When St. Anger was being made they tried their hardest to get back into the scene. They tried too hard and came across as fake. Just do it if you're going to do it, stop talking about it.

i have the memories of the marketing campaign for st anger.
"Just like ride the lighting"
"were going back to our roots"
"metallicas gone thrash again"
so i bought the album with out hearing a song fully trusting that all these people couldnt possibly be wrong. They have ears they just dont say this shit because of metallica's blitzkrieg media campaign.
WHAT HAPPENED? oh yeah you screwed me metallica st anger is crap and im holding a grudge. Never buying an album again or going to a concert not even wearing the AJFA shirt anymore. I realize its all in vein your so huge you dont feel my boycott but its the principle.
I will however download the new album and share it on every bitorrent and file sharing program i have :). It makes me feel like justice is being served :P. Again realistically not gonna do much as long as mtv plays it they will sell a million albums. even if it is just the sound of cock roaches mating for 70 min.
I trusted them after load to not suck then came reload after that i thought well they surly cant do that bad again then st anger came. I have lost all faith in their ability to compose decent sounding music.

"I have liked every single album that Metallica has released with obvious exception to St. Anger. I liked about 4 songs from it but the rest were just not up to par. However, they wanted it to sound that way so I don't care.
I liked Load and Reload because I like hard rock and I love Metallica and I thought they sounded awesome so screw you all. Metallica understands what sounds good and if Kirk says this album is gonna be the best in 15 years, it will be the best in 15 years. ...And Justice For All was an amazing album. The Black Album sold 14 million copies, you can't say it sucked if it did that well no matter what tastes you have.
You posers who bash them, you won't like it as much as Master of Puppets because no matter what you will always hold Master of Puppets as their best effort. James can't sound like he did back then so don't set impossible standards for something you know you will condemn anyways.
You are suppost to support bands you like and evolve with them, not compare them to Megadeth who can't hold a candle to Metallica (over 100 million albums sold vs. about 20 million albums sold, don't argue the numbers). They want to do something new and you all just automatically shoot it out of the sky with all this ITS NOT PUPPETS, SELL OUTS, NAPSTER HATERS, MONEY HUNGRY, MEGADETH! You people are idiots! Nothing but fickle morons and fair weather fans. How about some faith and loyalty for once with a touch of knowing WHAT THE HELL YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT?!"

I think the best part out of this interview was this: This time, we tuned the guitars back up to what they originally were for the first five albums. Because we've done that, James' voice sounds more like it did in the '80s than it did in the '90s. There's a lot of changes that we've made, but I believe that they are all for the better.

Awesome, hope Kirk is right. I wouldn't mind an album like Black Album, and obviously, something like first four would be a dream come true, but it probably won't happen because it's not musically possible to create a better heavy metal Metallica album than master of puppets, ride the lightning, or and justice for all. Those albums are just ace.

At least Motley Crue know they can't write anything worth shit anymore. It makes me wonder though, do Metallica really think they are capable of another good album? They obviously don't need the money...

It may have been an error in the transcription of the article, but 'SO What': In referring to the Rolling Stones he sez they are having 'fund'. I mean, what's more important, 'fun' or 'fund'? But fun does'nt impress me if it ain't good music, no matter how much fun they are having.

Seems that most of the haters here have one thing in common. Your bitch about Metallica begins with Bob Rock and Jason Newstead. Some things to point out here. AJFA had virtually NO Jason influence, you couldn't hear Bass on any ssong with the exception of te Burton trib ['To Live is to Die' (I think Cliff may have even wrote that bass riff). The problem is that each recpord from the black album on had consistantly more Bob Rock influence. He even played bass on St. Anger. Well guess what people, Bob Rock is gone. We now have the guy with BY FAR the best ear in music. C'mon people, can you all think of a crap Rick Rubin record? Other than Linkin Park? Hell that record isn't bad for them, even. Just remember, these guys ain't 22 anymore, but they are professional, and the have the best producer around to keep them from sucking. This will be a good album.

This is the same shit they said before they released "ReLoad". They said "Load" was the experimental songs and "Re-Load" were the more traditional Old-School METALLICA songs they recorded during that time period. WRONG!! They both sounded pretty much the same.
Then, These guys kept saying "St. Anger" was going back to their roots and it sounded like "Kill 'Em All" or "Ride The Lightning". They got alot of people excited about it, So everyone would run out and buy it the day it came out. Only to find out that it was nothing like Old-School METALLICA and wasn't even as good as "Load" or ReLoad".
Now, They're doing it again with these comments. If Kirk says this CD sounds very similar to their albums in the '80's and their guitar tunings are what they were back in the'80's and James' voice sounds raw like it did back then, Well it better sound like that. METALLICA fans are sick and tired of being fed bullshit in order to buy what these guys are putting out only to find out it sucks.

You know, if all people would go to a heavy metal concert from time to time, there would be a lot off less crime in the world.

Get the Donnington Download festival live version of that new song. The first few videos and MP3s sucked huge, wart-covered balls, but man, that version is fucking dynamite. Screw the vocals, Hetfield's voice has always been a bit crap on stage, but everything shits, pisses and vomits over anything since Metallica.

Kirk won't come out and say it but I think he's trying to say that he too thinks everything for the past 15 years has been....Well I'll be respectful and say sub-par. I don't know I eally want to beleive him, but after St. Agner it's hard to, but part of me just doesn't want to give up on metallica. I just wish they'd stop talking about it and release it so we can judge for ourselves. Well if they are tuning standard again I hope James can sing, because I really don't hear much of that 80s James that Kirk mentioned. And what's with all the people saying everything after 'Puppets' Sucked? Have we forgotten AJFA?! come on it was a kick ass album - the terrible production but seriously get your head out of your asses. And to Sammi Curr if your band is so great...prove it.

Okay Metallica bashers! Let me ask you a question - When was the last time Megadeth had an album that went to number 1 in 30 countrys? Answer - Never! When was the last time Metallica did it? 2003's St. Anger folks! The so-called worst Metallica album went to # 1 in 30 countrys! Wake up idiots, St. Anger was good. Just because it was a departure from the past and everything else out there doesn't mean anything. Do you think that when The Ramones came out that people thought they would start a whole new genre of music? Or when Motorhead started, that they would be considered one of the godfathers of metal? Hell no! St. Anger was completely ahead of it's time, and still is. It was a garage sounding jamfest, filled with anger and power chords, and there's nothing wrong with that! If your angry and pissed and need to get that out of you, then listen to St. Anger. If your a complete idiot that wants to listen to the same crap over and over, then keep bashing it I guess.
Every Metallica album rules! Thats all there is to it!

COMMENT | New Metallica CD Demo is leaked on German Web Site

Well, it has emerged from the center of the Earth.
Metallica’s raw demo of their new CD leaked out on a German web site for what seemed like less than one day.
However, I was able to download and uncompress the files and I must say I was blown away. Hands down a genuine metal effort. Rick Rubin is a genius at producing and resurrecting careers.
Metallica is reborn and I mean that with every vein in my body. The sound is genuine old school Metallica. Throw in a little Pantera’s Cowboys from Hell with In Justice for All and there you have it. Furthermore, I must say to all of you @$$holes out there who have been blogging and chatting on the internet you can kiss my metal @$$. If that is the best argument you have for Metallica’s low years then you can just go listen to Cher. Metallica still can thrash with all the young pups. Show them some respect. And I will bet a C-note that it will be the biggest CD of 08’.
Regards,
Music for Life
