MARILYN MANSON: 'I'm Always Going To Be Bad' - June 2, 2007
According to MansonUSA.com, Austin Scaggs of Rolling Stone magazine recently conducted an interview with Marilyn Manson. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow:

Rolling Stone: What did Evan's [Rachel Wood, Manson's 19-year-old girlfriend] parents think of the ["Heart-Shaped Glasses (When the Heart Guides the Hand)"] video [featuring several soft-core sex scenes starring Manson and Evan]?

Manson: Well, I had to have a drink with Evan's mother and father. The main thing that needs to be established is that I might share my life with her, but that does not incriminate her in my behavior. So if I want to go dig a hole and bury my genitals in it, that doesn't mean she dug the hole. Basically, I'm not as bad in the way they'd like to think I am. But I'm bad in a different way. I'm always going to be bad. More bad than Michael Jackson, but that's probably not a good comparison, considering.

Rolling Stone: They'd obviously be concerned with what she's up to around you.

Manson: Absolutely. I'm not surprised by that. But I found a strange ironic similarity with what her father said to me and what my dad said to Evan, which was, "If you break his heart, I'll kill you," or something along those lines.

Rolling Stone: You always have a unique woman with you, whether it's Rose McGowan or Dita Von Teese or Evan. What separates Evan, in a professional sense?

Manson: Evan was a real catalyst to help me realize that I wasn't delivering the message that I always stood for. And if you were to speak about her talent and personality, she's the most unique, stand-alone person who doesn't need a relationship with me to further her career. If anything, I could only take away from it.

Rolling Stone: You've shocked plenty of people. Growing up, what shocked you?

Manson: The shootings at Kent State — because I grew up in Ohio and could probably ended up going to Kent State. I grew up very afraid of war, and for the oddest reasons. I wasn't afraid of dying as much as I was really afraid of getting my hair cut. It might sound funny, but it's really true.

Rolling Stone: You received death threats after the Columbine massacre. What was the scariest moment?

Manson: I had just been interviewed by Michael Moore [for "Bowling for Columbine"]. I was going to perform at Mile High Stadium in Denver, where if someone wants to kill you, you're dead, that's all there is to it. I was being followed around by about twenty plainclothes police officers. Everyone, my family and loved ones, so to speak, begged me not to do it, but they knew I had to.

Rolling Stone: Your European tour will hit a former monastery in Slovenia. Who booked that?

Manson: Everyone who's with me now are people that have actually stood by me after a really hard period in my life, and my manager, and the people who arrange the tours, are tying to accommodate my happiness. So when a show like that comes up, it's pretty irresistible. The question shouldn't be: "Why is Marilyn Manson playing a monastery in Slovenia?" It should be: "How are we going to get naked girls and chimpanzees in there?" That said, I'm not into interspecies erotica.

Manson's a funny guy, very smart too. People fail to see that side of him, they don't understanding his sarcastic dark sense of humour.

mechanical animals was a multi layered riddle of an album, a modern master piece.

this album is a raw peeled back album with a touch of modern-emo music added to it.

the are opposites. one is a genuine piece of art the other is an unfocused "where do i belong" album.

finally someone other than me that really enjoyed mechanical animals. Its no antichrist but its ten times better than his most recent 2 bs albums. The last 3 songs on it are some of the best depressing songs ever.

Everything up to Mechanical Animals was fantastic, after that he seemed to be trying a bit too hard with a few decent tunes here and there. Haven't heard the new one, may give it a run.

"How are we going to get naked girls and chimpanzees in there?"

Only Manson could come up with that line.

I remember how terrified people were when Antichrist was up on the charts. Probably the same people that thought Bart Simpson was a bad influence and should be banned.

What a scab. I hate it when people say he's a fucking genius. What makes him a genius!?? I think it takes a genius to know one! He wants you to think he thinks outside the box, but there is a much larger box of consciousness and intelligence engulfing this fucker's box of thinking.
Go back to writing in your diary about how your life sucks, fucking space camp.

^^ lol thats awesome nvcameron, anyways I actually like a couple songs off the new album, the last few are amazing, but from the first one up to about number 7 are...meh not that great. I think John 5 should be back, it sucks that hes not but Skold is doing an okay job too. To tell the truth tho, I dont see why no one here likes HolyWood that much, thats my Favourite album by MM, I think Antichrist and Mechanical are awesome too. I got all his CDs and find HolyWood to be my fav, anyone else like that album at least a little bit?

I think that Marilyn Manson is not done yet, but this album is certainly not as influential as many of his others. I find this album significant because it is the first time that he has released new original material in several years. Several songs on this album have the potential to become popular and may help Marilyn Manson enter the music scene for the second time. This tour needs to be quite shocking in order to officially get him back into business. The single that was released earlier this year is not very good musically, but the video is getting Manson the attention that he needs. He needs both positive and negative attention. His next album needs to be more shocking than Antichrist Superstar and needs to be in the top ten for some time. I don't think that this album will achieve that, but it will definitely re-establish his career that he temporarily abandoned several years ago. He also needs to do this before he gets any older. Some tracks on this album are good. I personally like:

"Are You the Rabbit?"
"Mutilation is the Most Sincere Form of Flattery"
"Eat Me, Drink Me"
"Putting Holes In Happiness"

I hate this songs:

"Heart-Shaped Glasses"

I don't mind all of the others, but I don't like them either.

This isn't his strongest work, but he can do it. Give him a chance to come back.

Yeah, long live "true musicians". Death metal is shit. All of it is shit. This may not be the best album ever, but it's better than some guy shouting like an idiot, making gay little sounds that sound like he's deep throating the mic. I don't consider "screaming", or "growling" to be true music. It's a bunch of damn misfits trying to promote a bunch of violent crap. That's exactly what I'll call it, because that's what it is.

LONG LIVE MANSON

I can understand how you all are turning the subject into money maker issues since that is the way it appears to you.....just think you are going off about Manson making a new album...I would love to see what you have to say about these american idol types.Considering Manson did do the work compared to the idol people that are getting record deals handed out them....yeah I think they are able to shot those record deals for idols out of thier ass as someone once put it to me. Manson is different and alot of people view his music in different ways....yeah he may be a freak to some people but at least he does not have to be a caged freak like alot of people that are not allowed to express themselves in ways that Manson might..hell other musicians at that because of the kind of judgement that is being shown from the comments posted. I like the idea of his show being played at a monastery...that's very, very intriguing.

Fuckitnblaze is funny. He sure has a lot to say about something he doesn't like.

Origin is cool. Decapitated is boring to me for some reason...

It's funny how in a lot of death metal, there isn't much dynamic going on which is hugely musical. It's all at 11 or shit... 35 with no breaks.

Trivium actually is another example of that. Boring.

That's what made bands like Death and Carcass so amazing. There was intensity, great musicianship, but there was a lot of dynamic in their music.

That's also what was fun about the thrash metal scene. Bands like Forced Entry, Prong, Testament, etc... they were all great at what they did and had amazing peaks and valleys in their music where it wasn't just some guy playing double-kick at ludicrous speed through the whole song and some dude who sounds like Cookie Monster's cousin.

It doesn't take a whole lot of talent honestly to growl. It's cool, and appropriate for that style of music, but not exactly challenging. To actually sing and hit your pitches correctly and do it all night takes endurance AND talent.

Don't be such a death-metal dork. You make yourself look retarded. Be open minded and get a job.

I don't got to a Slayer show for chicks. Never have. I go see Slayer because they are my favorite band ever. Meeting chicks at concerts never works anyways, because the chicks are usually listening to a band tha I don't care for, and she has no job. I know its a bad stereotype, but a lot of chicks at metal shows are usually doped up and wanting free booze. Knock yourself out, I am here for the band.
