METALLICA Bassist TRUJILLO: New Album Is Dynamic, Heavy And Groovin' - June 4, 2007
Greece's Rock Hard magazine conducted an interview with METALLICA bassist Robert Trujillo on May 22, 2007. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow (translated from Greek):

Rock Hard Greece: Can you tell us if the two new songs (Song#1, Song#2) that you played on the last tour will be included on the upcoming album?

Trujillo: "I don't think so. There are parts from one of the songs that may be in the album, but that depends on which songs will be finally on the album. We can't be sure, not until we sit down and listen to all the songs completed, to make sure that each and every one of them sounds perfect. But I can tell you that these two specific songs that you've heard won't make it, at least not in that form.

Rock Hard Greece: Could you describe the new album's sound? Lars Ulrich, just before the release of "St. Anger", had — very accurately — described it as raw, ugly and unpolished. Can you come up some adjectives for the new album?

Trujillo: "I would say that this is album is dynamic, heavy, groovin' and you'll probably be excited to know that there will be guitar solos on it! In addition, Lars remembered to tune his snare drum properly this time! For me, this album incorporates part of the dynamic and character of 'Master of Puppets', as well as the melodic style that people liked in the 'black album,' as far as the melodies are concerned. As for the general music style, much of the current material is groovy, heavy, dynamic and surely interesting. I would say that it's different than 'St. Anger' — in a good way, of course."

METALLICA lead guitarist Kirk Hammett recently told Austrian web site Krone.at that he thinks the band's upcoming album is "the best album we've put out in, say, fifteen years." Hammett added that the record contains "just a really spectacular range of songs. This time we're not afraid to refer to our past music in order to create future music. People will see that we've kind of embraced our old vocabulary again and are using that vocabulary to express new things...I think with this album we're definitely going a little more back into our roots."

Hammett also hinted that the new record features "a lot of really, really fast songs, a whole lot of really heavy stuff. We changed our approach to writing the songs...There's a lot of changes that we've made, but I believe that they are all for the better."

The guitarist said that while the band had also written some "slower and melodic" tunes, he wasn't sure if any would make the final track listing.

METALLICA has been working on the follow-up to 2003's "St. Anger" with producer Rick Rubin since earlier this spring.

The band will now head out on a European festival run before returning to complete the album later this summer. An early 2008 release is planned.

As I suggested in the last "'tallica" thread, they dropped the two "new songs". Good decision, maybe the times of bland one-finger chugga chugga riffs are indeed over.

Distancing from St. Anger, two new bad compositions discarded, standard E tuning again - Mr. Rubin, bring back Andy Wallace behind the mixing desk in order to give their new album a crystal clear sound and maybe the "'tallica" times are over and Metallica are back...

A tip to Metallica:

Before you release this record, bring the CD out to 10 different cars with 10 different stereo systems.. if you can CRANK the hell out of it and it's clear and heavy - release it... if it is all garbage sounding, go back in, re-mix it and don't let the public have until it's right.

Trujillo could possibly be the savior of metallica, he actually has input on this cd, he was able to crack some St Anger jokes and he is the one who got them to play Disposeable Heroes and the other songs that they hadn't had on their set for awhile. Trujillo is obviously not only a member but a fan of metallica, and I think his enthusiasm will hopefully put a spark in the asses of the rest of the guys. Plus he is a damn good bass player to boot whether he was on cantrell's solo album, suicidal tendencies, infectious grooves or with ozzy.

You ever heard of heroes? True inspirations? I mean there are tons and tons of people who feels that metallica is the main reason they first got into heavy metal in the first place.. Despite what me, you or anyone else thinks about their recent works, it's not that easy to just forget about the past and what a band really means to you. Of course there has been and will be awesome releases, like the ones you mentioned, but the fact still remains that Metallica is one of the biggest names in metal history, period. St. Anger went down a different path. I think it is healthy for bands to try this. The Cult went from glam to heavy and stayed. Metallica paves the way for new innovative approaches to music and I think SA was a very successful album (unless you just want a repeat of the same ole tunes). Removing guitar solos and introducing that unique drum sound was very creative. I loved the raw sound and DVD that came with the CD. I also liked Rob Halford's Two and Shotgun Messiah's venture into industrial. I do appreciate change. How can you label the music before it even comes out? Give it a chance. These guys have earned that. Rick Rubin will hopefully make this disc rock....or should I say, GROOVE!

Iced Earth.... bah... he would more than likely have gone prog by now.

"Removing guitar solos and introducing that unique drum sound was very creative."

Yes, very creative in 2003..... a time when every so called "metal band" in the mainstream had no guitar solos. Also, the tin can snare sound can already be heard on a few records released way before St. Anger. Meshuggah's "Chaosphere" and Cryptopsy's "Blasphemy Made Flesh" come to mind. However, when these lesser known bands do it, they are criticized for having 'shitty production,' but when metallica does it..... it's considered 'cool' and 'creative.' Bad production, when you have a budget like theirs, is pathetic. Like i said in another thread already. St. Anger was nothing more than an attempt by them to be relevant in a genre that moved past them years ago. I'm all for musical experimenation, but to utilize all the cliches of a particular period and then refer to it as being creative or unique is just ridiculous.

If they know thier music like they should then it will probally be a good add to there albums out there.....I wondered if them being pissed at fans for downloading thier music to soon was the out come of thier album St.Anger....can't wait to hear it in 2008 sometime.

If the metal genre is so crappy, then why do you bother coming to this site to read news about it? Extreme metal, from an instrumental standpoint, is at a higher level now than metallica could ever hope to reach (unless a certain weak link in the band was gotten rid of... i.e. Ulrich). What's funny is that they claimed for so long that they didn't need metal, they had evolved past it and what not... yet look at them now. Feebly trying to keep up. They should've just stuck with their new school fans and their half assed attempt at blues rock. Metallica without Burton or Mustaine compositions is rubbish, simple as that. And Justice For All should've been the end.

All I want to know is how the fuck is removing guitar solos creative? I just don't see it.

"Alright guys, let's suppress and kill off our natural talent. Let's completely change with the times because guitar solos aren't cool anymore, even though following trends used to be what we stood against."

That just doesn't strike me as creative. It strikes me as lazy.
