ROBERT PLANT Shoots Down LED ZEPPELIN Reunion Rumors
- June 28, 2007
Robert Plant has shot down reports that LED ZEPPELIN will reunite for a one-off memorial concert in honor of their late record company boss.
A report was published earlier in the week suggesting that Robert Plant, guitarist Jimmy Page and bassist John Paul Jones will re-group alongside John Bonham's son Jason for a special concert in memory of Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Ertegun in London.
A source was quoted as saying, "Page, Plant and Jones spoke and agreed to do the memorial concert. They are waiting for a definite date.
"And no one can quite believe it, but during discussions about the concert they all gave the green light to a tour if it all does well and they don't all fall out.
"It has been hoped for and denied for years. But this is the closest they have ever come to a reunion tour. The feeling is that this is going to happen next year."
Speaking at a press conference for the upcoming Rockwave festival — which is scheduled to be held June 29, July 1 and July 3 in Athens, Greece — Plant insisted that he hadn't heard anything about the rumored ZEPPELIN reunion and jokingly added, "If there was one, then there wouldn't be enough doctors to support it!"
Ertegun died in December 2006 after seven weeks in a coma following a fall at a ROLLING STONES concert.

well anybody who has heard plant sing zep tunes in the last seven or so years , knows he sounds really bad on them. and we are not talking about not being able to hit just a few high notes either. plants voice just lost its ability to do zep tunes. plant and page both know this. its just the way it is. a tour will never happen

They don't need the money that's for sure. But I think one final tour would be cool although it's a bit late in the game...these guys are all in their 60's now aren't they? Page might be able to get away with some solos but I don't see Plant doing a whole tour.

to people slagging them off on here, you are ignorant, heavy music wouldn't exist as we know it without this band, ditto people who bad mouth Sabbath. agree that Plant couldn't sing the old Zep stuff the same way anymore, but I mean, come on, he was 20-25 when he sang that stuff, and he's in his 60s now! I think that he deserves a lot of credit for forging his own path, as an above poster noted. And all of these guys deserve credit for resisting the urge to cash in, they'd make SO much money, but the reality is that they don't need it, and maybe they actually care about their legacy and don't want to tarnish it? Plus I don't think they like each other all that much anymore either! Either way, although I never got to see them, I'd rather they just let it lie than cash in for an embarrasing reunion!

hahaha........
some people only need a little bit do they not?
That guy has way too much time on it's hands........
Led Zeppelin would be remembered without Stairway......
and even if the verse sounds like another song......
for one it is the vocals and guitar solo that make that song so legendary anyway........
beyond stairway
Led Zeppelin made the album houses of the holy as a tribute to their influences.........so it makes sense that the album has songs that sound like other artists........
anyone who wants to debate zeppelin, the stones, or the beatles status is going to have to have a lot of time on their hands because of the sheer number of diehard fans that are still loyal to the bands today.........(fans of all ages).......
but go ahead and try.......
the question is.........
led zeppelin has had so many horrible reviews in their career is anything anyone says going to really tear them down.......
almost 40 years later......
oh yeah........
and
I am not a huge zep fan.........
but I would hope a reunion show does not happen.........
why fuck with a legend? plus Bonham was such a monster on the kit........his son is good but not in the same ways.....
Plant should keep playing as long as he wants though because his new stuff is usually pretty good in my opinion.......
Page should really just stop and the bulk of stuff I have heard from him is pretty fucking bad.........plus appearing on that P. Daddy song and allowing for the bastardization of Kashmir........
COMMENT | posted by : drub20 6/28/2007 9:14:40 AM
As cool as it sounds conceptually, I think the posters above are correct. Plant simply can not sing in the range and style that he did with Zep anymore. If they were to do it, all the reviews would be spent bashing his voice. Why would he want to put himself through that?
COMMENT | ........... posted by : DARKBASS 6/28/2007 9:18:08 AM
on that note, I do love some zeppelin tunes........
and either way........if a band covers songs and makes them from mediocre to ok...........and ups them to AMAZING........I would say that are a great band........NOTE: BABE I'M GONNA LEAVE YOU
and if they play a show and ..........shudder..........tour..........
best of luck to them and I hope they pull it off.........
solo Plant does a very good job of working his voice around zeppelin songs if you ask me.........
you can not blame someone for getting old.........
the only person who can still nail 90 percent of their notes in old age that I have heard is the legend himself..........RONNIE JAMES DIO!

Let’s see Kiss has had an entire carrier where they are know more being a gimmick than anything else. Do you really believe they would of 1/100 of the fan base they had with out the makeup, spitting blood, fire etc. They did a great job of marketing themselves.
While I am a big fan of Sabbath they where never really the biggest band at anytime in their careers. Outside of Paranoid you cannot say that any of their LP’s where that inflectional outside a small circle of hard rock fans.
Look at records sells in the US, Zeppelin is at 106 millions, Kiss is in the 20 Million range and Sabbath is at 18-19 million range (from the Riaa site). Throughout the 70’s Zeppelin also outdrew Kiss, Sabbath and even the Stones in concert attendance.

If you think Zeppelin is overrated, then you apparently have never bothered to listen to them. I mean *really* listen to them, sit down with albums of theirs, get your head wrapped around the music. It's incredible stuff.
And I didn't hear this thing on Stern yesterday, but it sure sounds like to me that someone just doesn't get it. Of course they borrowed material from other artists, duh- that's like, common knowledge, big fucking deal. It certainly takes nothing away from their legendary status, although it's apparent that you emo-listening cock-huggers are already jumping all over it as if it somehow finally puts the Zeppelin legend to rest. Good luck with that.
Sounds like this guy that was on Stern is a jealous ass, probably angry that his favorite band, whoever it may be, was overshadowed by Zeppelin in the 70's.

They don't have any idea of any Led Zeppelin history, couldn't name more than 2 albums, and couldn't name you more than 4 to 5 songs....IF that.
I might would think LZ was overrated too if all I'd ever heard was "Whole Lotta Love" on FM radio.

Touring under the P&P banner in the 90's was a clever and elegant decision. The name Led Zep remains then immaculate. Ozzy+ Sabbath should have done the exact same. You all are missing the point.
First off, Led Zepplin did NOT sell more albums than Kiss in the 70's (worldwide), and did NOT have more concert attendance. Thats just not true. Kiss had countless platinum albums in the 70's.
My point is this. I think Zepplin sucks, buts that just my opinion. It bothers me that we have to still hear about them today. They are irrelevant! Kiss influenced all the 80's glam rock bands...Motley Crue, Ratt, Skid Row, etc. Black Sabbath was the first metal band, They influenced great metal bands to follow, like the legendary Iron Maiden and Judas Priest. Bands like Kiss and Black Sabbath still sound great today. Their songs dont sound dated. Whenever I hear the same boring Zepplin tunes I cringe. Its unbearable.

This is from the RIAA site which is US Sales Zeppelin 18 Gold 17 Platinum 13 Multi-Platinum Kiss 24 Gold 10 Platinum 2 Multi-Platinum
This goes back to KISS marketing themselfs, they always talked about how they sold millions. I always beleived it until I saw teh RIAA site. Their historic invasion made heavy music accesible to the masses (especialy in the U.S.) and paved the way for numerous hard rock genres movements. Bands like Cream, Black Sabbath and Deep Purple also benifited from LZ's success, finding millions of fans that never would have realized the UK's hard rock scene's influence and opening a whole new market place.

Fact: Kiss was voted most popular band in the world 3 times in a row in the late 70's.
Kiss played 4 sold out nights in a row at MSG.
Kiss has greatly influenced almost all of the great rock bands of the 80's.
Black Sabbath has influenced most of the great metal bands.

Led Zeppelin are one of the only two bands to ever have 5 diamond albums. The other band who has done this is the Beatles.
Led Zeppelin's five albums Led Zeppelin I was ranked #29, Led Zeppelin IV was ranked #66, Physical Graffiti was ranked #70, Led Zeppelin II was ranked #75, and Houses Of The Holy was ranked #149 on Rolling Stone magazine's The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
they rank second only to The Beatles in sales.
Led Zeppelin sold out Madison Square Garden for many years straight, multiple shows. For example, In June 1977 Led Zeppelin performed six sold out concerts at The Garden. The band spent no money on advertising for the gigs, relying on street demand to sell out the shows. Enough ticket applications were received to sell out a further two nights, had time permitted.

Ever since the band broke up because of the death of drummer John Bonham Zeppelin fans old and new have been waiting for a reunion involving all the surviving members. Although Plant, Page and Jones played together for live aid, Atlantic records forty-year aniversery and the bands induction into the rock and roll hall of fame for reasons unknown to the public, since the bands break up in 1980 Plant, Page and Jones have not made a studio album or toured together as everyone knows.
One rumor persist about a comment Robert Plant made about John Paul Jones a few years ago may shed some light on this puzzling mystery. When Plant, Page and Jones were promoting a new Zeppelin project Jimmy Page put together using zeppelin recordings before the interview Plant replied to a reported when asked where’s John was, Plants reply he’s parking the car. The story behind Plants possibly innocent but hurtful remark strained the relationship between Plant and Jones. Moreover, when Plant and Page first reunited for the MTV live show unledded John Paul Jones was not asked to be a part of it. Another reunion between Plant and Page with the release of a new studio album walking into Clarksdale drove a wedge futher between Plant and Jones and eventually Plant and Page had a falling out sometime during that tour. Another Plant quote early into the first Plant, Page reunion; Plant “I could not envision myself playing music without Jimmy the rest of my career” but we all know that didn’t turn out to be true.
In my opinion Plant has been the reason no reunion has ever taken place although Plant has stated the band was four members and now with three we cannot go on. However, looking back over the last twenty-five the first question I want to ask Robert Plant is. Why is it okay to play Zeppelin songs with other musians but not do any live concerts with Jimmy and John Paul? Jimmy Page has also played Zeppelin songs live with other singers, bands and with Robert Plant it almost seems blasphemous not to play a live gig with all three and a high quality drummer.
Some good points were made on this board in regards to the reality that Plant and Jimmy certainly are well past their prime. I believe of the three John Paul Jones has retained more of his skill as a musician over the other two. Another question is Pages health of the three Jimmy has been least visible over the last three years and rumors of his health have not been answered.
If the band could muster up one last reunion providing all three men are healthy and excited about playing together for one time or maybe even a few limited dates that would be great. The selections of songs and arrangement of those songs would determine the success or failure of what could be the greatest reunion of all.

September 14, 2003 Top 10 Rock Performers of All Time Talk about a subjective list. Don't look for hip-hop. And we're not talking jazz or Motown. These are the best rock 'n' roll performers who somehow affected the way we view pop culture.
10. Nirvana They changed the musical landscape, ushering out '80s keyboard-layered bands like Duran Duran, Flock of Seagulls and A-Ha and establishing the grunge trend for the '90s. They gave Generation X an anthem band and a tragic legendary front man in Kurt Cobain. Had it not been for Cobain, you wouldn't have Hole in your CD collection.
9. Janis Joplin Clearly the inspiration for women rockers, a tough, guttural blues singer who blazed her own trail in a male-dominated industry. She made it OK for women to be brash and bold, to sweat and have a little fun onstage. Singers like Melissa Etheridge, Chrissie Hynde and Ann Wilson were obviously influenced. Pearl was her own Lilith Fair.
8. Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band They set the standard for a live performance, routinely playing four-hour shows night after night. In his heyday, Springsteen was the hard-working, working-class lyricist who left his heart onstage in a pool of passion. With the E Street Band, live performances were magic. In the recording studio, Springsteen was willing to toss out successful formulas, releasing introspective albums like "Nebraska" and "The Ghost of Tom Joad."
7. Bob Dylan His gravely voice and beatnik poetry defined the '60s, resonating through the Greenwich Village coffeehouse scene and into every baby boomer's bedroom. The fact that "Time Out of Mind" won the 1997 Grammy for Album of the Year is a credit to this legend's creative longevity. No writer's block for this Minnesota boy.
6. The Grateful Dead Devoted fans? Dead Heads' faithfulness to Jerry Garcia make Parrot Heads' passion for Jimmy Buffett seem as genuine as Ben's devotion to J-Lo. The Dead created the tie-dyed culture and their fans were willing to follow the band around the country, creating a subculture never seen before. The Dead were gifted musicians, spending hours practicing and churning out different set lists night after night.
5. The Rolling Stones Longevity is why they belong on this list. Lyrically inferior to The Who and no musical match for Led Zeppelin, this is a party band that has endured for almost 40 years. Their catalog of music is impressive, with more than 30 albums and dozens of memorable singles. To see Mick Jagger move like he does today and Keith Richards move at all is a testament to dirty living.
4. Elvis Presley No one had seen anything like this kid from Memphis, who defined rock star charisma. Like Frank Sinatra, Elvis crossed entertainment genres, finding success in movies as well as music. His charming voice and sexy moves drove women crazy. With the slew of impersonators still making money today, Elvis is perhaps the biggest rock star whose candle burned out long before the legend ever will.
3. Led Zeppelin From their blues-inspired self-titled debut to the posthumous "Coda," Zeppelin brought a different sound to each record. Jimmy Page is arguably the best rock guitarist of all time—on par with Jimi Hendrix, Ritchie Blackmore and Eric Clapton—but what made Zeppelin stand out was the dynamic voice of Robert Plant and the percussion of the late John Bonham.
2. The Who The best of the late '60s British invasion, with rock's most honest songwriter in Pete Townshend and the quintessential charismatic front man in Roger Daltrey. Add the steady bass work of John Entwistle and the no-holds-barred drumming of Keith Moon (check out the drumming on "Quadrophenia") and no one could touch this band on album or onstage. "Tommy," one of the band's three concept albums, was reproduced onstage and screen and is considered a landmark achievement.
1. The Beatles They set the musical direction of the '60s and redefined the word "mania." Each of the four band members could sing and write music. How many bands feature four different lead vocalists? The John Lennon-Paul McCartney songwriting team is the best ever. With more than 40 albums and dozens of top 10 singles, their place in history is unmatched.

Led Zeppelin wails on live release By: Emily Tumbrink, Assistant Scene Editor Issue date: 9/3/03 Section: Scene PrintEmail Article Tools Page 1 of 1
Easily one of the greatest bands of all time, Led Zeppelin has had a lasting impact on music since the release of their self-titled debut in 1969, and their influence and popularity continue to this day.
However, until only very recently, fans of Led Zeppelin, especially those of a younger generation, could only experience the band's music through their studio releases. There was no live album in existence that truly captured the essence of the Led Zeppelin live experience, and fans who were too young to have the privilege of witnessing the band in concert were left completely in the dark about the truly epic proportions of Led Zeppelin's ability to perform. Luckily, the wait for enlightenment is over. How the West Was Won is a three-disc set of two 1972 performances that Jimmy Page, guitarist for the band, re-discovered as he was gathering materials for a DVD. These performances showcase the band's talents during their heyday, just after the release of their masterpiece Led Zeppelin IV and immediately prior to Houses of the Holy, and feature songs mainly from these two albums.
During the nearly three-hour jam session that forms How the West Was Won, Page's talents on guitar truly come to life. Recently named one of the top 10 guitarists of all time by Rolling Stone magazine, Page definitely lives up to his reputation, especially on "Dazed and Confused" and "Whole Lotta Love." With each approaching the 25-minute mark, Page is given free reign of the stage with lengthy guitar solos that showcase his skill. John Paul Jones' addition of a mandolin to the acoustic classic "Going to California" is another interesting touch that sets this live performance apart from anything ever released by Led Zeppelin. John Bonham's extended drum solo on "Moby Dick" gives this talented drummer the recognition that he deserves in a way that is only hinted at in the studio recording. By listening to each of these talented musicians in this live format, it becomes clear that they thrived in the loose environment of live performance, an environment that allowed them to wail in a way that is impossible on the more restrained studio albums.
With a track listing that includes such classics as "Black Dog," "Over the Hills and Far Away," "Going to California," "Whole Lotta Love," and "Stairway to Heaven," How the West Was Won is an obvious choice for those who are fans of Led Zeppelin. The changes to many of the songs highlight the band's talents and also further illustrate their many influences, including blues, bluegrass and Celtic folk music. The 23-minute version of "Whole Lotta Love" contains short covers of music by Elvis Presley, Muddy Waters, James Brown and others, and allows the band to pay homage to their roots. Though this release is a few decades late, How the West Was Won is definitely worth the wait. Those who have even the slightest appreciation for Led Zeppelin's music will benefit from experiencing their music in live performance. The noticeable variations between the live and studio-recorded versions of the songs included on How the West Was Won definitely make this album a worthwhile purchase.

Doctors told Plant he would not be able to walk for months—in fact, they thought he might never walk again unaided.
The group would not be able to tour for a year or more, if ever. Plant and Page sequestered themselves in Malibu and began writing material that was leaner and more hard-hitting. In November, Led Zeppelin traveled to Munich and recorded Presence. Released in April 1976, Presence conveyed the sense of a band up against bad odds, fighting back. The opening two tracks, "Achilles Last Stand" (about the car accident) and "For Your Life" (about hell and drugs and terror, and about how life inside the band may have been developing), featured the best solos Page would ever play—abstract, desperate, raging. "Presence was pure anxiety and emotion," Page said later. "We didn't know if we'd ever be able to play in the same way again. It might have been a very dramatic change, if the worst had happened to Robert. Presence is our best in terms of uninterrupted emotion."
Over the years, Presence hasn't sold as well as most of the band's catalog. It's more or less the forgotten album; its feelings are too hard, too intense and probably too insular to stay close to for very long. In effect, Led Zeppelin accomplished something akin to Eric Clapton's achievement on Derek and the Dominos' Layla: They forged the spirit and purpose of blues into a new form, without relying on blues scales and structures. Presence is clearly singular in Led Zeppelin's body of work, and it's likely the best album the band ever made.
"It was really like a cry of survival," Plant said. "There won't be another album like it, put it like that. It was a cry from the depths, the only thing that we could do."

Led Zeppelin remain the greatest rock band to ever set foot on a stage. No band before or since has even come close. The reason Zeppelin is still winning tens of thousands of new fans over every year is no mystery, it's the astounding variety and consistent quality of their music. I know that sheer numbers are not the whole story, but they can be instructive. Zep's first six straight albums alone, so far have sold 76-million copies, just in the U.S., that's an average of 12.6 million per album. No music artist of any genre has ever matched this feat. Just for some perspective and as an example, The Who, a great band, have so far sold a grand total of 20 million records in the U.S. Very respectable when compared to most artists, but dwarfed by Zeppelin's 109.5 million in U.S. sales. These kind of staggering numbers are only achieved by consistently brilliant music production, and Led Zeppelin still have no equal in that department.

First off, listen to ANY BAND's first album, and tell ME if you don't hear the influences of other bands on there. For example, Metallica's first album features Motorhead and Diamond Head influences if actually listen for them. SO any of YOU that bash Zeppelin for leaning on influences, you can pretty much shove it!
Second, those that say Zeppelin sucks while praising the Beatles and Kiss can KISS my ASS! The Beatles started out as an eye-candy pop-tart band. Kiss was and is, nothing more than a brand name with shitty music attached to it. Zeppelin, on the other hand, strictly avoided becoming commercial in any way, even going so far as to release an album with no label to allow the music to speak for them. You don't see Zeppelin action figures or beach towels, now do you? The only difference between the Beatles and the Backstreet Boys is the latter didn't play instruments, while the former never engaged themselves in absurd choreography! Spontaneity and improvising were what made Zeppelin great, while the Beatles didn't have near the talent to improvise and rework their 3-minute sellout singles if they wanted to. Kiss has always had to rely on pyrotechnics and their damned makeup to get people to their shows to gloss over the facts that the songs themselves weren't worth the vinyl they originally released on, while Zeppelin only had to put their name on the ticket to play to soldout shows! They DID have lights and other elaborate setups, but those were only to accent the illusion they were trying to create with the songs. As far as album sales and concert attendance are concerned, Zep may not have surpassed Kiss, but I can assure you that Zep OUTPLAYED and OUTCLASSED Kiss every single night they played with even breaking a sweat!
Third, how DARE you assholes who bash Robert Plant's voice! How you can expect a 60-year old man to perform vocally at the same level as he did at 25 is completely unfair and unrealistic! Even Halford and Dickinson can't hit some notes that they once did. They're still far more proficient as vocalists than some the "screamo" bullshit that some of you no-talent bastards listen to.
Now, I'd like to point out that I was born in 1983, far away from any of the 3 bands' heydays. I did NOT see them for myself, but through many, many different sources I can come to the conclusion the Beatles are remembered most by posters, their sickening pop lyrics, and their goody-two-shoes personas. Kiss is forever known primarily for "Beth" and their fireworks. Zeppelin, of course is always applauded for their stage presence, mystical lyrics, and for their unlimited, unrelenting, and uncompromising creativity. Thank you.
