DAVE MUSTAINE Responds To Article Challenging His 'United Abominations' Lyrics
- July 11, 2007
|
|
MEGADETH mainman Dave Mustaine has issued a response to an UN Dispatch article by Mark Leon Goldberg in which Goldberg dissects and challenges the information presented in the lyrics to the MEGADETH song "United Abominations". Says Mustaine: "Whether my facts are right or wrong, and whether you agree with me or not, I know I have your support — most of the time and that is all that matters. "I would rather feel right and be wrong with the semantics or facts in the song and have expressed my right to free speech, than to feel wrong and be right and sit back, like the rest of the cowards of the world, not saying anything. "I think it is a simple statement, made by a man who loves God, his country, and his family. If that is a problem, then tough! "I do have to say that the writer is very good with his words and most of his points are what I based my lyrics on. And while I thank him for the eloquent way he partially described what I was trying to say with as little bias as possible (which he didn't do 'unbiased' very well), needless to say, we won't be having tea. Ironically, he agress with me more than he lets on, just read it again. In fact, he knows he agrees with a lot of it, because his [sic]. "And as far as my source for the information, it was the very people he allegedly works for — the media — and the place where he voiced his refutation — the Internet — where this public information lies. And we all know that everything you read on the Internet is troo! "I am glad someone took the worm. Now let's see if anything more than attacking my beliefs or getting personal comes out of this. The first guy from the UN that came after me (yep, this isn’t the first time I have been verbally assaulted about this song) made sure to say that he was a bigger fan of my previous band than Megs too, as if that gives him any credibility with metal fans, and again personally attacking me. "Whatev! Ah, what would the SEX PISTOLS have done? "It just makes me more convicted to sing my songs, and in a weird way, I have so much more respect for the protest singers when I grew up that spoke out against the war and the government. It is risky because people live to spin what a person says — i.e. spin doctors (their whole job is to turn something someone says into something else) — and the establishment has been successful at keeping the masses fooled for way too long. "An example of spin would be 'I did not have sexual relations with that woman' — or something similar by our ex-president Bill Clinton. And these professionals can also make anyone look foolish or at the least, break them down and silence them, while trying to discredit them. It always gets personal when they run out of ammo. I mean, who hasn't said 'yer mama' at the end of an argument? "One question would be, who is the writer that is complaining? Is he a real writer or some blogger? Does he do news, journalism, or tabloid reporting? Does he represent the UN or the American people or is he just an American like me, and is just venting? And why is he so intent on going after me? Why not use that energy constructively? He is obviously educated well (or has a thesaurus). "Anyway, I would rather be wrong about the lyrics of 'UA' (which is just a song in the end) and have this guy try to explain why I shouldn't have your love and support, then be right and have no one notice. And it makes me wonder, if I was wrong, why bother with me? I am just a dumb metal guitar player, right? "Bottom line is I am stoked to see you all having this discussion about things that matter to us all. What a victory!!! "We win!!! "We win!!! "We win!!! "I dig it when the Droogs get to have discussions like this because we all win; we all learn something. "In closing, I love you guys and don't let this deter you from what really matters. As I have said before, 'its still 'we the people', right?'"

Yeah, because when you attack something, FEELING right is much better than those pesky facts. Dave clearly went to Rush Limbaugh's school of attacking something. But then fact checking's never been a strength of the right wing, has it?
And for FUCK'S SAKE, Bill Clinton's been out of office for nearly a decade. Stop bringing up him lying about a fucking blow job whenever your accuracy is attacked, Right Wingers.

I love how everyone fights against what political side Dave is on. I hear people yelling that he is the other side on both sides. I say everyone is a spin doctor and we all just assume he is saying something against us.
Go Dave.
In the end the song got us thinking right? That was probably the point. Not that he was trying to shove something down our throats.

Did no one other than me notice the slight pot-shot he took at Metallica....AGAIN? Go back and read. He basically said Metallica had no respect in the metal community.
You know that James and Lars read and hear all this stuff and will put out a blazing album this time around. Mark it up. You heard it here today, tomorrow, until the album comes out.
Please respond....Who here thinks Dave will perform with Mustaine at their Hall of Fame induction? I think Newstead will

"I would rather feel right and be wrong with the semantics or facts in the song and have expressed my right to free speech, than to feel wrong and be right and sit back, like the rest of the cowards of the world, not saying anything." That might be the most pathetic fucking statement I've read in my entire right. Let me paraphrase..."I'd rather be full of shit but think I'm not full of shit."
Being wrong about facts is fine unless you have an audience of fucking ideiots who are too stupid to actually check things out for themselves. Then it's just plain irresponsible.

I've always enjoyed Megadeth's music, but let's be realistic about Mustaine on a personal level. His thoughts have been totally distorted for a long, long time. He lives in his own alternate reality and can't see the inconsistency and irrationality in his views. This is a guy who once said, "I've always liked Ministry but I know (Al Jourgensen) has a legendary drug problem so you can't really take what he is saying seriously." Those words apply to him as well.
Personnally, I found him to be more tolerable when he wasn't showering us with this right wing vomit, but his political views vary widely and by the release of his next album he could be singing a completely different tune.

Anthony Burgess rolls over in HIS grave every time someone credits A Clockwork Orange to Stanley Kubrick. I'm no fan of Mustaine's re-born religious convictions, but I do support his freedom of speech. I think he made his point. He's not claiming to have any more of the facts than what the media has previously reported. He's not making shit up, and in this age of instant information he's just trying to get people to think. He's merely taking the perspective of a journalist within the context of a song. Maybe we could all stand to do at least some basic research before we start talking out the collective ass of humanity.

Politics and religion always cause a fight, Dave's a musician, and has a right to his opinion, but if you're going to go as far as naming your album something like UA, write lyrics about it and tour the world singing it, then try to get your facts straight because you know an argument is coming. I have always respected him and his music but he is confusing the hell out of me lately with his words. I'm glad he made us all think, but honestly, I don't need any musician to tell me I shouldn't trust the powers that be, I figured that one out on my own, the hard part is to organize the thinkers to DO something. Oh and to thehauntedmademedoit, right on man, A. Burgess has rolled over that one many times....it was more than just a movie.......READ A BOOK!

Does he honestly believe this horse shit?
Swing and a miss, Dave, on both the song and your piss-poor response to REAL criticism of your unsubstantiated diatribes.
As if your credibility wasn't trashed enough while you and Lars shared your feelings on that shrink's flower-patterned couch.

So basically, you'd rather speak up about an issue, even if you have absolutely no knowledge of the facts behind it beyond a gut feeling, than not say anything. I have a different quote for you:
"Tis better to remain silent and thought a fool than to open your damn mouth and remove all doubt."
Seriously, folks, if you don't know what you're talking about, please don't say anything. If you want to talk the issues, go learn the facts first. Then I'll be happy to discuss with you. Don't be like Dave here, and spew ridiculous bullshit without regard for whether it is true or not.

This guy is more then meets the eye , although we all know of his rediculouse religiouse beliefs he is one hell of a publicist and brilliant self promotor!
If Metallica does even half of the damage Dave has done with this last release , I will be impressed (The new songs sound OK, they have a challange in Feb 2008 though!!).
Piece out to all those that embrace the metal militia....after all fighting for your belief and freedom is what Metal is about to me.

It used to be, everyone was entitled to their own opinion, but not their own facts. But that's not the case anymore. Facts matter not at all. Perception is everything. It's certainty. People love the President because he's certain of his choices as a leader, even if the facts that back him up don't seem to exist. It's the fact that he's certain that is very appealing to a certain section of the country. I really feel a dichotomy in the American populace. What is important? What you want to be true, or what is true?..."

I've always taken him with a grain of salt because he writes (what I think is) great music.
But he stole everything for that tune out of a book (including whole sections of lyrics) by a FOX NEWS reporter (Eric Shawn). It is easy to read something, get fired up, and not question it. Dave should have done more research, and his tap-dancing "rebuttal" shows it. The UN is far from perfect but not for the reasons he attacked them.
BTW, I am a Democrat but Clinton did screw up in Kosovo and Somalia. Hew was great with domestic Issues and fiscal policy but the military was not his strong suit. At least he is better than the warhawks we have in office now.

Blackwater: the most intelligent post i've read in a long time. kudos.
but on to more pressing matters:
who in their right fucking mind thinks that The System Has Failed is a great album?
i just bought it (succumbed to praise from this site itself; i've disassociated myself from Megadeth once they started writing for the radio).
for every good, energetic, interesting song theres three mid-tempo BORING AS FUCKING WATCHING PAINT DRY songs that try to be melodic and catchy and sound like weak hard rock that chicks with hairspray would probably like.
yes, Blackmail, Kick the Chair and Back In The Day are good musically ("Back In The Day" though have lyrics that sound like something from a Manowar B-side). but what about the other 8 or 9 useless songs? yeah, there are a few good riffs scattered about them, but in general they're just boring.
who said The System was great thrash? you owe me the $5.99 plus shipping i burnt on eBay.
well?

What I said earlier. Everytime posts like this come out and a hundred people argue over it, Dave is counting his money. Oh and Roadrunner (Blabbermouth) too.
No not crazy sales but enough to keep Megadeth from dying. I don't care but those who dislike Dave's views should really be quiet.

Being a Progressive Democrat has less to do with IQ points than it does simple, universal respect for other human beings.
System was a good album. Why? Because it might not have ever come out. Because TWNAH could have been the last Megs album. Because we also got Gigantour. "Something That I'm Not" "Back In The Day" "Blackmail" "Kick" Because it took me a year to buy it.

another listen of The System tells me it is a terribly uneven album. some great parts. a lot of mediocre ones. lots of cheesy lyrics. some bad backup vocals. a 6.5 at best.
you fuckers who love System ought to throw on Peace Sells. or even Rust. it's like comparing Grey Goose to some trailer park moonshine.

ya, I'd love to punch him out. That would be the highlight of my life. He's just another skid mark in the underpants of society. He really is a horrible person. I'm not judging his musical creativity at all here, he was a good writer once. But his ego, personality, and slanderous character outweigh his creativity, and will not be respected on my part. Hearing him talk is like watching Trivium do an interview. Was that too insulting?

And musically, Mustaine can't be fucked with.
And, if you did punch Mustaine, someone, who luckily for you, wouldn't be me, would track you down and hurt you very badly. And that's if those Drovers didn't bust you up on the spot.

Iraq already has cost the american taxpayers more money than vietnam, a trillion bucks a month. W and Cheney are littered with sleazy cronies who take the fall for them. Check out the resigned surgeon general's statements posted in today's news.
worst president ever. by a landslide. but since you are 50 years old spooky, it won't hurt you as much as the americans 30 years and younger.

Fascism, modern political ideology that seeks to regenerate the social, economic, and cultural life of a country by basing it on a heightened sense of national belonging or ethnic identity. Fascism rejects liberal ideas such as freedom and individual rights, and often presses for the destruction of elections, legislatures, and other elements of democracy. Despite the idealistic goals of fascism, attempts to build fascist societies have led to wars and persecutions that caused millions of deaths. As a result, fascism is strongly associated with right-wing fanaticism, racism, totalitarianism, and violence.

i've been a Megadeth fan since Killing and his output has been weak since after Rust. that's indisputable.
and his rhetoric is weak too. he's a pompous ass who's full of himself and thinks he's some profound intellectual when he's got the brain power of a community college dropout.
you can debate your politics all you want (i'm actually on your side politically), but don't say Dave can shit in my mouth when he's been releasing substandard music for well over a decade or more. i know my metal and The System is not that good. and Dave is a rambling idiot.

Was slightly better than Bush. The difference though makes the difference, he was still imperialist, but way more into using free trade and diplomacy to gain the U.S Corporate Imperialist ends (btw I am not a leftist or communist, just telling it like it is), the Neocons prefer outright war to such manuvering. One thing that was pretty pathetic about Clinton was Madeline Albright's reaction to the allegation that the Iraq sanctions had killed a half a million children:
Lesley Stahl on U.S. sanctions against Iraq: We have heard that a half million children have died. I mean, that's more children than died in Hiroshima. And, you know, is the price worth it?
Secretary of State Madeleine Albright: I think this is a very hard choice, but the price--we think the price is worth it.
Clinton was way closer to traditional republican (and internationalist, like Bush SR) than Carter or most of the Dems.
The Dems aren't doing shit about this war or terrorism these days (er, going to the root causes and thinking about many of them. The only person I see saying ANYTHING relevant about this is a Republican, Ron Paul!
As far as the economy, the economy was boosted under Reagan, but with Clinton it was better overall (more well rounded). Now the debate could be that Reagan caused the boom, but then again couldn't you then say Carter's policies caused the Reagan boom with the same logic? Wrong, the economy is cyclical, it has booms and busts, and people often look to an administration far too closely for the causes of this. However, I think the reason Clinton was so hated by the Right Wing is because he accomplished a good ecomomy, without being a republican and simultaneously having a (relatively) socially liberal ideology. I think they're jealous, because he raised taxes on the upper 1 %, and ALSO accomplished a good economy, something supply siders said wasn't possible.
I'm not a Clinton lover by any means, but I just look at the facts and determine what I believe to be true. Fuck party affiliations and stupid meaningless labels like Democrat, Republican, Liberal, Conservative.
I'm liberal about some things, conservative about others, libertarian on other things.
Its this black and white political posturing that keeps America from truly being greater than it could be.

I have a challenge for you:
Find FIVE different resources for the opinion that Clinton's economy was bad.
The challenge: one mainstream source.
one Libertarian source.
one liberal source.
One conservative source.
one moderate source.
Instead of your unhinged website you list, I'd like to see you rise to this challenge and inform us why Clinton presided over a "bad" ecomomy. Even Republicans acknowledge that the economy was good during his term, even if they use different ideas why it was so.
Btw, as far as Bush being bad economically, and foreign policy wise, I can find five sources that I listed that say so. Just ask Pat Buchanan what he thinks of the war in Iraq, not a liberal by any means.
Just ask the Cato institute, a very libertarian pro small government thinktank.
Just ask Chuck Hagel or Jim Webb, not "leftists" by any means.
Just ask the various staffers under Reagan and Bush Sr that oppose the current war in Iraq.
Its not a left/right issue at all anymore.
As far as Clinton and Communist countries, what is Gw doing about China's oppression of Human Rights, or Saudi Arabia's oppression of their people? Oh economic vested interests in those countries? Oh so we shouldn't care about what happens to the people of China then because Bush isn't doing SHIT about that?
Wake the fuck up.

You are & will always be an important part of the world of metal. I have heard of people who have music degrees and cannot do & will never be able to do or accomplish what you have and never be able to write the riffs that you write, play guitar like you and write music the way that you do. Dave you are a true GOD. Your music will live forever. "Do you have any idea what your music means to me and the rest of the world? You probably do. My heart felt sad when you referred to yourself as "just a dumb guitar player". Please never say those horrible things about yourself. I liked the comment by the person who congratulated Dave for taking the high road. Yeah, when you're shown to be wrong over and over again (in a text), it's a smart move to not try and fight back with facts. Just pretend like it's no big deal, and try to obfuscate by making some point about how it is better to speak your opinion and be wrong, than to be right and not go on tirades about it. So, basically, Dave is being consistent: he says dumb stuff, but at least he's not afraid to do it!
