METALLICA's LARS ULRICH: New Album To Arrive Next Spring
- July 12, 2007
|
|
Sweden's TV4 interviewed METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich earlier today (July 12) approximately two hours before the band's headlining performance at Stadion in Stockholm. Watch the 12-minute unedited question-and-answer session at this location. When asked about METALLICA's upcoming studio album, which the group has been working on for the past few months, Ulrich replied, "It's the first time in almost 20 years that we're working with a producer other than Bob Rock. We're working with Rick Rubin, who's made records with everybody from the CHILI PEPPERS to JOHNNY CASH to SLIPKNOT to whatever… So we're excited to be working with a different producer. It's interesting, it's stimulating. The stuff that I've heard… [Laughs] … which is pretty much all of it, is very heavy, a little more dynamic than the last record, 'St. Anger', and I think that what he's really trying to do is capture an excitement and capture kind of a moment and trying to get us away from spending too much time thinking about what we're doing so he's trying to get us just to play in the studio. It sounds like it has a lot of energy and a lot of kid of good, energetic moments. But James [ Hetfield] is gonna start singing in August and [we'll] do some overdubs. We're gonna spend another couple of months in the fall to finish the overdubs and we should hopefully mix the record by November and have it out in the early spring." High-quality photos of METALLICA's Stockholm concert can be found at Mestrock.se. METALLICA's setlist for Stockholm concert: 01. Creeping Death02. For Whom The Bell Tolls03. Ride The Lightning04. METALLICA previously played the same track live on August 15, 2006 at Seoul Olympic Main Stadium in Seoul, South Korea (watch professionally filmed video footage with soundboard audio at this location). Metallica are so fond of their material from the post "black album" era that they've loaded their setlists with it. /sarcasm.
Looks to me like a band that knows they've lost it and are trying to regain any credibility they once had.

I agree with cowbob. energy and 'just playing' is what got us to st. anger. not thinking won't give anyone the intricate parts of the older metallica. you can't have those kind of interweaving guitar lines if you don't work them through. they COULD surprise us, and give us a decent cd though. they do technically have it in them, sa they have done it before, and occasionally have some sweet parts here and there.
interesting that it would take two, almost three years to come up with a cd in which they are catching energy and spontaneous feel.

Kissing up due to the fact that St. Anger was the lowest selling album in their catalog. Trying to entice some of those old fans they used to say they didn't need (and say what you want about the album going double platinum, 2 million copies is piss poor compared to what the albums before it turned over).

Unfortunately I don't think this record is gunna sell any more records than St.Anger, cuz people don't buy records like they use too. Too many people download illegal music and I truly don't think that we'll ever have a rock album that sells 10 million again, the closet is...and lets face it is Nickelback (HAHA) with 5-6 million...unfortunately!
but good luck to Metallica! i hope it sounds killer !...which it will

The pay services are just as much at fault. That is what made mp3 player's an accepted medium.

It's only a question of how bad the new album will be.
Doesn't matter of course, because Metallica can still sell records and play stadiums no matter how bad they get and their loyal fans wont even think twice about spending their money on them and praising how great they are....
bravo Metallica. The band that doesn't have to release anything even half decent and still bring in the $$$$.

So, only assholes don't like St.Anger? I didn't know that not liking something made one an asshole....
Even if a person likes St.Anger, they still must admit that Metallica have watered themselves down at least a little bit. I mean, compare the guitar work on the first four albums to St.Anger. Not only that, compare the lyrics, the vocals, pretty much everything. You can't tell me that Metallica is still as great as they were and keep a straight face.

Do any of you that don't like the post 80's albums like any of the songs on the newer albums? The Black album aside, what about songs like "Bleeding Me", "Fixxxer", "Low Man's Lyric", and "The Outlaw Torn"? I love all of those songs. I like a few others and really don't like the rest. I am also one of the few who like St Anger. Not all the songs are good, but some are.
So I'm wondering, do the folks who feel Metallica sold out, do you guys just brush off the whole album because it's not the Metallica of the first four albums or do you genuinely not like the songs?
What I found after some time was that I felt betrayed by Metallica like a lot of you did, but once I got over it, I was able to sit down and listen to the music and realized I liked some of it *gasp* I know, it's hard to believe.

I find "The Unforgiven", "Bleeding Me" and "No Leaf Clover" to be listenable at times. I also think that "Hero of the Day" is a great song that they should've farmed out to some other artist/band, because it sucked when they played it. Listen to the version on S&M and imagine someone like...oh, say, Bruce Dickinson singing it. I've given every album since the Black Album 2 or 3 complete listens. Each one sounded worse with each successive listen.

Why is Lars speaking as though he's not in the band ?
"The stuff that I've heard… [Laughs] … which is pretty much all of it, is very heavy, a little more dynamic than the last record, 'St. Anger',"
Lars is part owner of the band, so why is he not totally involved?
The stuff that he's heard? Shouldn't he have heard EVERYTHING?
Or has Metallica, after the fiasco that was St Anger, really come to hate each other and are recording everything individually in sessions.
Weird

The fact is that Metallica dosnt know when it will be done, what Lars says is the "worst case scenario", and it hasnt taken 4 years to make this album, they started like 2 years ago? I guess rubin said that their stuff wasnt good enough, and therfor had to remake it, now when the recording has started/they get back to recording then it wont take for long......

Hmm, where in my previous post did I mention anything about St. Anger in particular? I said I like all of Metallica's material...obviously you need me to break it down for you because your intelligence level isn't quite up to par. That means Kill Em All, Ride The Lightning, Master of Puppets, Garage Days, ...And Justice For All, The Black Album, Load, Reload, Garage Inc., S&M and yes St. Anger.
But where did I say that people were assholes if they didn't like St. Anger? When I said "sorry assholes..." I was directing that insult to the people who were going to maybe give me shit for liking all of Metallica's material. I'm sure most people caught on to that, except for you of course.

I'm really pissed... I have two weeks in Scandinavia and I arrived just after Venom (who I haven't forgiven since they cancelled Maritime Hall in San Francisco back in '99), then had to leave before Metallica. I suppose I could have seen Motley Crue, but I've seen them many times in their hey day and the current era is a joke. Not gonna buy SEK to see Fat Crue play for about $120 per cheap seat. I could have seen Ozzy, but I was at his unexpected retirement show near Seattle when he lost his voice and ran off-stage before announcing his retirement the next day. Not gonna spend the equivalent of $180 USD to see Ozzy in Stockholm or Oslo. If you're politically unaware, the high cost of tix in Europe is because George Bush and Dick Cheney have screwed the USD exchange rate to maintain support for their failed war. On another note, there is the episode of The Ozbornes where Zach says confidently, "I'll bet you America won't even be a country in 50 years." That was about 7 years ago. Why would he have said that, Sharon?????
