JAMES HETFIELD Says METALLICA Is Focusing On Feeling Around 'Master Of Puppets' For New CD - July 14, 2007
METALLICA frontman James Hetfield was interviewed by Norway's NRK on Tuesday (July 10) prior to the band's headlining performance in Oslo. Watch the seven-minute unedited question-and-answer session at SVT.se or YouTube. A transcript of the interview follows:

Q: What will the new METALLICA [album] sound like?

Hetfield: "As good as we can right now, I would say, and that's all it ever has been. [Producer] Rick Rubin is extremely good at getting the best out of any artist he's worked with, whether it's BEASTIE BOYS, NEIL DIAMOND, SLAYER, SLIPKNOT… he does all, he does rap… anything! Somehow he taps in. He's got a good vibe, and a good ear, and we think we do too. So sometimes there's a little bit of this — we like our things the way we like them, he likes his things the way he likes them — but with two great powers putting something together, I think we'll come up with something pretty amazing. He's having us focus a lot on the feeling around 'Master of Puppets' — what was going through our minds? what was it like? — the hunger around 'Master of Puppets'."

Q: You played at Live Earth. What are your thoughts on the climate crisis. What can METALLICA contribute to [the whole process]?

Hetfield: "I really avoided the press around the Live Earth day. I didn't quite agree with what was going on there. Politics drive me crazy, and I don't like talking politics. Politics get in the way of things; they get in the way of getting things done, and getting our music across is what we wanna do — we don't wanna cloud it with 'Democrat, Republican,' whatever. Our philosophy is 'think for yourself' at the end of the day — do what you think feels right. I really believe that humans will survive. I have a lot of faith in mankind that we will overcome and adapt — whatever it is; whether it's man-made or God-made, or Earth/Mother Nature — we have a lot of smart people on this planet that will make something good out of bad."

Q: You guys have been a band for 25 years. What is the plan for the next 25 years?

Hetfield: "Yeah, to make it to 26, 27, 28… you know, it's one day at a time. Something exciting that's up for us is being eligible for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in America, which is a pretty big deal. We played it last year for BLACK SABBATH, who chose not to perform, and we said we would. [Laughs] That was a lot of fun. You know, it's this historic landmark. A lot of bands get inducted, [but] not many bands are there to play all together to say 'Hi' and 'Thank you.' If you made it to 25 years, you either hate each other or you're broken up or you didn't make it that far, or something. So we're pretty proud. There's a not a whole lot of bands that can say that, so we're very grateful."

Q: You had a little bit of a difficulty on the last record. How are you guys functioning now on the new record?

Hetfield: "Well, one thing that someone said on the last record — going through all of the cleansing, the therapy, the talking, the breaking down the falls… you know, from one extreme to the other — from hating each other to not talking to hugging and crying over every note… It's crazy — one to the other. They're both unrealistic. Somewhere in the middle is where we need to live, and balance is difficult at times, especially for myself, who likes the extremes, or thinks I like them. All the work that we went through on 'St. Anger', it was said that it was not for 'St. Anger', it was for the next record, and that makes total sense. 'St. Anger' was pretty much a statement — it felt like a purging of a feeling. And this record is more us working together — in harmony, in friction, in happiness, in sadness… all of that put together. And we're able to get through it — we've walked though fire; we know how hot it can get, and we don't need to go through there again."

These guys haven't had a decent tune since the Mission Impossible soundtrack. Just go back to the Thrash Metal sound that made ya famous. Oh wait, sorry, just go back to the Black Album sound that REALLY made you famous!
Still, your old songs really do rock though! I'll hold your old stuff dear in my musical mind, just as a hold the real GnR from 87-93.

A cross between AJFA and Black isn't great. AJFA is okay but the energy was already waning, nowhere near the speed and power of the first three. Black removed all the speed and added too much polish; the energy is gone.

An album in the style of MoP would be cool as long as it is an extension rather than a retread.

I still have hope. Megadeth put out a decent album after a string of losers.

Hammett says one thing, Hetfield says another and the Ulrich chimes in with his 2 cents now and again. The only smart one of the bunch is Trujillo and if they tone him down their making a huge mistake. It's sad in a way because everyone knows this band knows how to bring it but it seems that after years of not having that drive it's almost like their afraid to or have lost it completely. It's funny how the one thing that a band strives for is also the one thing that destroys it... Success.

Rick Rubin should be commended for his Johnny Cash work. JC WAS a legend in his own right, of course, but mostly only to an "older" crowd that grew up with him. Rick Rubin worked JC into shape and introduced him to a younger crowd, who embraced him.

JC 's legend would NOT be what it is now without Rick Rubin.

If lars were to be dumped, such would be another good move.

Of course, as much as I have enjoyed Trujillo over the years, I would like to see him exit Metallica in favor of James and Kirk somehow having The mighty power (instrumentally/ vocally) of Newsted back in place. Score large with a real drummer and who knows - I think something very good could possibly come it all.

As things are now, I don't have too much hope for anything incredible or even balls out upstanding.

The Black Album was the beginning of their downfall. In my opinion it was a 50/50 album. 50% real Metallica, 50% filler.

"I Disappear" was suprisingly a great song. 100% Metallica, very powerful, yet radio-freindly without being gay or cheesy.

I would love for the next Metallica album to be respectable enough to BUY. The last CD I bought was the Black Album. I haven't even downloaded ANYTHING after that, it's not even worth having in my collection, except for "I Disappear".

No way. Even if Metallica record the best album of their careers, the people who hate them hate them SO much that they'd never admit the album was good.

With that said, I think getting Rubin in there was the change they needed. Bob Rock had become a "Yes" man, and told them to record any riff they wrote instead of having them toss some of them. Even the biggest Metallica fan (like me), has to admit that there are parts that should have never been recorded, much less released. Particularly on St. Anger.

Wow, comparing two records that are almost 20 years apart. I actually own "Stadium Arcadium" and it has to be the most filler oriented album the Chili Peppers have ever released. Sure, it sold quite a few copies, but the Chili Peppers are one of those bands like metallica...... they sell lots of copies of each release based on their reputation in years past. Hell, one of these random blabbermouthers could've produced "Stadium Arcadium" and it would've still sold like mad. And, if Rubin was really still the great producer that he used to be and was able to get the best performance possible out of the bands he produces, The last Chili Peppers outing would have been shorter and with less filler.

I never said the song was mission impossible (i disappear) was great. I said it was their last decent song, in my opinion, mainly due to the fact that I think it's a wicked riff in that song. I play guitar and love to play it. Just because Metallica isn't strumming their hands off with old thrash riffs from the Tony Hawk glory days, doesn't mean it sucks.
Korn is horrible in my opinion. But that's just my opinion, I could be wrong.
Yeah, I would love to spend a night with Mike Patton. What fan wouldn't want to spend some time with their favorite singer, D'uh?
Did any of you think that Rick Rubin clung onto the Legend of Johnny Cash to BOOST his career? Led Zeppelin, anyone? I've never comprehended how a band can go from being one of the best bands ever assembled, to one of the worst, especially when you have a track record of kicking complete ass for more than a decade. Music should not be a "what have you done for me lately" kind of thing. That is for sports. Everyone needs to consider, oh, i don't know, hoping the next album kicks ass...maybe? All of this talking shit is pathetic, considering most of you [not all, so don't get sensitive if you're older] people were in diapers, or not even born, when Puppets came out.

It was more then just deep purple what about zeppelin? (although not all of their stuff can fit into the "metal" category) not too big on the history but wasn't sabbath around back then as well?

I've always been kind of hesitant to call Zeppelin metal. They lacked many of the overt Jazz and Classical elements that early metal bands like Black Sabbath (no denying the jazz influence on some of their v. 1 recordings) and Deep Purple (i don't think i need to point out the classical elements). So.... in my own opinion..... Zeppelin was heavy, yes..... but not metal.

Accept the reality before you... St. Anger was a brutal and raw experiment, and Death Magnetic is the masters returning to true form.
