SMASHING PUMPKINS, DARKEST HOUR, DANZIG, BEATALLICA First-Week Sales Revealed

SMASHING PUMPKINS' "Zeitgeist" sold 145,000 copies in the United States during its first week of release to debut at position No. 2 on The Billboard 200 chart.
"Zeitgeist" contains the first new music under the PUMPKINS banner since frontman Billy Corgan disbanded the group in late 2000.
Corgan and drummer Jimmy Chamberlin are the only original PUMPKINS members in this lineup, which introduces new guitarist Jeff Schroeder, bassist Ginger Reyes and keyboardist Lisa Harriton. None of them played on the album, however.
The following are notable heavy metal/hard rock U.S. sales debuts for the week ending July 15, 2007, as reported by Nielsen SoundScan (all CD figures are rounded to the nearest thousand except those under 7,000, which are rounded to the nearest hundred; The Billboard 200 chart position included, where applicable):
SMASHING PUMPKINS - "Zeitgeist": 145,000 (#2)
BAD RELIGION – "New Maps of Hell": 21,000 (#35)
DARKEST HOUR – "Deliver Us": 6,600 (#110)
DANZIG – "The Lost Tracks of Danzig": 4,600 (#164)
NILE - "Legacy of the Catacombs": 800
BEATALLICA - "Sgt. Hetfield's Motorbreath Pub Band": 800

Good results for Smashing Pumpkins and Bad Religion. Danzig should have sold more but since it wasn't well advertised, it's done pretty decent numbers.

Awesome for Pumpkins. I wish they'd have gotten number one. Those Nile numbers don't look too great. I thought they were a bit more established than that. Yikes.

It's a pretty niche genre, so those numbers are to be expected... I hope this doesn't mean they're going to call it quits. They're certainly among the best at what they do these days.

Don't think thats the actual new album from Nile, thats called "Ihthyphallic". Maybe thats a compilation or demo CD? ]
Mind you, if Machine Head sells 16000 in the first week, I'd expect Nile to do just under half that based on the fact they are an uncommercial underground death band.

I expected Nile to sell at least 200,000 copies, at least.
Good numbers for all of those bands though, SP did really well. I thought that everyone would dismiss this album like they did with the Garbage reunion album

There's a review of Beatallica over at antimusic (http://www.antimusic.com/reviews/07/Beatallica.shtml). I like it. The lyrics are nothing special, and I'm not sure I like his Hetfield imitation for all of the songs... but, the musicianship is really cool. I'd recommend listening before buying if at all possible. You'd have to like quirky albums to get any enjoyment out of it.
And, you're right the Nile disc is mostly just a 'best of' compilation. However, it does have a DVD with some videos (I haven't watched it yet). Funny thing: on the front of the package, it has one of those "for fans of" stickers they use to tell you "if you like these bands, you'll also like this one." The first band listed on the sticker? Nile. Someone in marketing is on the ball... :)
