METALLICA's JAMES HETFIELD Says 'St. Anger' Was A 'Statement' That 'Didn't Work' - July 19, 2007
Britain's Kerrang! magazine (web site) recently conducted an interview with METALLICA frontman James Hetfield. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow:

Kerrang!: You're working [on the new METALLICA album] with Rick Rubin who has a reputation as an "absentee" producer...

James: Oh, I met him once, I bumped into him in a corridor! [Laughs] No, we were well aware of his reputation when we signed up. On "St. Anger", [longtime METALLICA collaborator] Bob Rock did everything — he was producer, engineer, bass player, babysitter, father figure. And Rick is pretty much the opposite; he's not there to babysit. When we first came in, his opening statement was, "I want you guys to impress me; I want you to feel like you're starting out again." He really wants us to get in the mind-set of "Master of Puppets". It's impossible to recreate what we were 20 years ago, that's silly, but we had to get that hunger back.

Kerrang!: And he's impressed so far?

James: Rubin is really good at feeling songs, and he'll tell you straight-up if he doesn't like something. We started with 20 songs and we've whittled it down to 14 since he came in. He won't say "This fucking sucks," but he'll make suggestions and I'm definitely open to that. With "St. Anger", it became so open-minded that it became unfocused. This time around, there's a lot of "Sorry, it's not good enough." We're aiming for excellence.

Kerrang!: With "St Anger", did the democracy you practiced in the studio end up comprimising the album?

James: Definitely. It was very unrealistic. We went from tearing each other's throats out with sarcasm, anger and not speaking to the polar opposite where we'd embrace every stupid idea so as to not hurt anyone's feelings. And that didn't work either!

Kerrang!: It seems weird that you're taking time out to tour when you're on a roll in the studio...

James: Well, hopefully it'll inspire us to take it to another level. You'll listen back to a new song and go, "We were just out there listening to 60,000 people screaming at what they love about METALLICA and I don't think they're gonna scream at this! Also it gets claustrophobic in there — you can be trapped in there not knowing whether people are still out there.

Kerrang!: Have you started to work on the lyrics?

James: I have phrasings and something vocally to at least feel what the song is like. I forgot about "Let's please everyone in the band." Now it's, "This is where my head's at." I think people will identify with it.

Kerrang!: Is there a sense that time is running out for METALLICA and you need to make a defining album again?

James: Well, we have no shortage of ideas and what am I gonna do? I write songs, I play songs and I like doing this. I know we're getting older, there's no point in trying to hide that fact, and we might tour less than we did, but as records go, we just want to make a good record, that's all we ever want to do. I mean, we thought "St. Anger" was going to be amazing, but it turned out to be more of a statement than METALLICA music that we enjoy playing live. It was more of a purge, just getting that shit out of me, as a catalyst for the next chapter of METALLICA.

Metallica was the band that would not compromise. Now, Metallica have put out a doucumentary about "how to get along" and "feelings", put out shitty albums for a long time straight now, and seem to have lost the huge integrity that they once had. Hope they can get that back, but I think it's been long gone since 'And Justice For All'.

Metallica will make a heavy fast, agressive CD. I know they will, look at the formula, Hetfield is on vocals, writing vocals. Kirk's talking about doing middle eastern shit on guitar. And now-a-days you actually read interviews where lars isnt anwsering all the questions! PLUS! Thrash is in!

Im not calling metallica trend followers by ANY means, because they started it! But face it! would they of made a thrash record similar to the 82'-88' era say 7 years ago?

When the video for "until it shites" was first aired all everybody started shitting their pants over how low metallica had sunk. even so, Load is not too bad its just Metallica's attempt at a Sabbath hard rock influenced direction. Further evidence of this can be found in Some Kind of Monster, when Bob Rock tells Hammet that solos will make the band sound old and Hammett (a world reknowned LEAD guitarist) quickly curls up like a scared puppy and agrees with him. He did the same thing with the solo for Unforgiven. Bob Rock told him he didn't like the solo he played and Kirk had that crushed look on his face and was about to cry and redid the solo. Lars had that same look when his dad said the songs on St. Anger weren't good. I lost respect when the video for Until is Shits came out.

The real problem with Metallica is where they are now from when they started out. Tthey were, like many of us, angry outcasts, and had found a group of like minded people and a medium into which they could skillfully throw all their anger and emotion. James wrote thought-provoking lyrics and those lyrics reflected his own self-perceived status in society. Go back and look at all their early pictures, James was the ugly pock-marked dude in junior high school, Lars was the midget troll, Cliff was the hippie stoner and Kirk was the snaggle-toothed afro'd kid. They had found something that helped them fit in, and they committed to it 100%. But through the years, James became the most popular guy in any room, Lars is banging a model and selling artwork on the side, and Kirk is on the cover of all the guitar hero magazines. They have lost touch with the reality of who they were, and they will never get that back. So, while they might write some strong material in the future, they will never regain the spark and true anger that created Creeping Death or Fight Fire or Master of Puppets. Sadly for the sake of many of us early fans, they are incapable of being who they were, and recapturing that magic.

Until then, try to act like you know what the hell you're talking about.

----------------------------------------

Could not agree more but as a huge Metallica fan myself, I think they're realizing that they've been a little too stubborn and pissed off a lot of people now to where it might reflect on their record sales. St. Anger did not sell good in the US but it sold better in Europe which might explain why they've toured out there the last two years, people in the US must be more pissed off at them or the metal scene just isn't as strong as it once was in the US, I honestly don't know. But I don't care what Metallica puts out, I'll know I'll like it as much as I've like everything else they've put out...and I'm from the US.

To anyone who thinks we're making it up, I'll describe it. Around the time Load came out, Kirk and Lars fronted up to a pack of journos to talk about the album. Kirk was in the middle of saying something, when Lars leans into the mic (cutting Kirk off in the process), and declares quite loudly:

"Metal is dead!"

...What more can I say?

For the new record, make St. Anger 2 - continue to explore your inner child and screech like a little girl being chased by a spider.

But seriously, I actually like some of the songs on St. Anger and if it was mixed better it would have probably been less of a stain on the band's record... Speaking of record, I can't wait to buy the new one.. stop doing interviews and get back to work! :)

"'tallica" / Metallica and Rick Rubin should hire Andy Wallace as co-producer and especially for the mix of the album. Slayer's "holy trinity" and best sounding albums (Reign, South, Seasons) were co-prduced and/or mixed by Andy Wallace. The later Slayer albums were produced by Rubin too, but lacked the razor sharp and crystal clear Andy Wallace mix and sounded subpar in comparison. Wallace gave dozens of rock bands a great sound; from Slayer to New Model Army, to White Zombie, to Bad Religion, to Faith No More, to Nirvana, to Helmet to Sepultura...

Only with Andy Wallace in the mix (pun intended) I'll get my hopes slightly up for the new "'tallica" / Metallica output.

Metallica encouraged bootlegging in the early days and eventually became hypocrites of their own making. They only do what they are told now. The master of puppets is the record company and they are simply the puppets. They have become a mockery of their own creation.

As I said once before, it sucks to lose faith in your heroes.

So, now that Jaymz is basically admitting that St Anger is a piece of shit.. how does that make those idiots feel who are still maintaining what a great album it is?

IMO, LARS ULRICH IS WORTHLESS AND ONLY KEEPS METALLICA DOWN. HE CLEARLY HAS ALWAYS BEEN THE WEAKEST LINK IN THE BAND WITH REGARD TO MUSICIANSHIP. AND IN THE CONTEXT OF TODAY'S METAL DRUMMERS' LEVEL OF VIRTUOSITY, HE CAN'T HOPE TO COMPARE TO THE INDUSTRY STANDARD.

YET HE CANNOT RESIST KEEPING HIS MOUTH SHUT EVEN THOUGH NOTHING HE SAYS IS MEANINGFUL, ORIGINAL , OR INTERESTING.

THERE SHOULD BE A PETITION ON METALLICA'S WEB SITE TO URGE THEM TO GET RID OF LARS. THE ONLY REASON HE IS IN THE BAND IS BECAUSE HE IS AN ORIGINAL MEMBER.

THE BAND SHOU8LD GET RID OF THIS MEDIOCRE, OVERPAID, NOISY, BIG-HEADED, ACTRESS-HUMPING ( lucky )PIECE OF EXCREMENT AND HAVE JAMES AND KIRK COMPOSE SONGS WITH SOMEONE OF THE AMBITIOUSNESS, TALENT, CREATIVITY, AND CHARACTER OF SOMEONE LIKE PORTNOY,JRZOMBEK(sp?) OR RULLO.

OBVIOUSLY THIS IS UNLIKELY, BUT JUST IMAGINE WHAT A CHARGE OF INSPIRATION A DRUMMER LIKE THAT COULD PROVIDE TO METALLICA'S WANING CREATIVITY LEVEL.

I think James' admission of what went wrong with St Anger and his honesty is awesome. He was straight up, didn't bullshit or tip-toe around shit. Makes me optimistic about the next record.

You like Metallica so it is very obvious that your taste in music sucks. S&M just sounded terrible. Other bands did the classical/metal thing and did a better job of it. Therion did it before Metallica.

nodeerforamonth, do you mean poetic device?

oh, and that headline is misleading...james said it was a statement, and then he said the hugging and shit didnt work. he never said the statement in itself didnt work. but overall, it seems that they are in fact looking for excuses for sucking.

Metallica haven't put anything good out since Black which was basically the last record with any hint of metal on it.

This album will probably suck balls just as much as all the others in the last 15 years

Granted I dont like the album, I think it served its purpose. Considering people are STILL talking about it and STILL NOT SHUTTING up about it whether you loved it or hated it, its STILL being debated over and over. I dont see too many people talking about Iron Maiden A Matter of Life and Death and that was a pretty kick ass album. Oh yeah and Slayer are already re-releasing the last album? What gives? people forgot they existed or something?

I've been a Tallica fan for a very long time, here's my 2 cents.....A couple things that are talked about a lot on this thread: St. Anger, Napster, selling out, etc....St Anger was a statement...a statement of three men struggling with a whole heap of horseshit......people tend to forget that above all these are people, not commodities....lyrically, it was a purging...musically, it had its moments...its funny that it sold as much as kill 'em all...people said the same thing when it came out: shitty production, shitty songs, etc....Napster was an intersting debachle....they had just finished a lawsuit with their record company to finally get control of their music so that the record company couldn't do anything stupid with their music....then they turn around and see that the lawsuit against their record company was all for naught....people were doing whatever the hell they wanted with the music....don't be so arrogant to think that metallica exists for you, they exist for themselves first and foremost, just as any true artist does.....if they existed for the sole purpose of you buying their records, that would make them sell-outs in the truest sense of the hyphenated word....as far as everything past the black album sucking?.....I will say this...metal is about rebellion, going against the grain....to say they sold out for any of the myriad of reasons that are normally stated is ridiculous......once you start putting rules on metal and saying that it MUST follow certain patterns, is the day you start killing what makes metal inherently attractive...it should never have rules....that's goes against everything it stands for....true there are basic ingredients that make metal "metal"....but beyond those basic things, a band should be able to do whatever the hell they want......true Metallica made "Mama Said", but Sabbath also made "Changes".....what it all comes down to is the fact that Metallica revolutionized all pre-conceived notions about metal and took it to an entirely different level.....they influenced just about everyone....metal most likely wouldn't even exist without them....will the next album rule?.....we'll see.....i'm optimistic....later mutha muchachos........
